Description

Fifteen years before Stranger Things combined science-fiction, Spielberg-ian touches and 80s nostalgia to much acclaim, Richard Kelly set the template – and the high-water mark – with his debut feature, Donnie Darko. Initially beset with distribution problems, it would slowly find its audience and emerge as arguably the first cult classic of the new millennium. Donnie is a troubled high school student: in therapy, prone to sleepwalking and in possession of an imaginary friend, a six-foot rabbit named Frank, who tells him the world is going to end in 28 days 06 hours 42 minutes and 12 seconds. During that time he will navigate teenage life, narrowly avoid death in the form of a falling jet engine, follow Frank’s maladjusted instructions and try to maintain the space-time continuum. Described by its director as “The Catcher in the Rye as told by Philip K. Dick”, Donnie Darko combines an eye-catching, eclectic cast – pre-stardom Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal, heartthrob Patrick Swayze, former child star Drew Barrymore, Oscar nominees Mary McDonnell and Katherine Ross, and television favourite Noah Wyle – and an evocative soundtrack of 80s classics by Echo and the Bunnymen, Tears for Fears and Duran Duran. This brand-new 4K restoration, carried out exclusively for this release by Arrow Video, allows a modern classic to finally receive the home video treatment it deserves.

Amazing film but very very different and unique

I’m still amazed how someone could even think of a film like this. Maybe from a dream perhaps. Young Jake. G acting is great, the sound effects and overall tone is amazing with included dialogue. For some the overall story might be confusing, but when fully understanding it will surely surprise you on the intelligent writing.

This is one of those movies that was/is so different from any like it ( similar to first 2 nonlinear Tarantino films) that it makes an indelible impression on you that lasts your entire life ( if your a film fanatic...& maybe even if you’re not). Early Jake Gyllenhaal is magnificent in this film as a jaded teenager who is able to see how things would be better if events occurred differently and must make a choice at the end that is heartbreaking.

Director's Cut is HD instead of 4k

I'm a huge Darko fan, but my favorite cut of the film is the Director's Cut, and given that this is a 4k release and the disc version includes a 4k version of the Director's Cut, you would likley think the itunes release would have it too, but it does not. That's really disappointing, especially since the HD version from previous releases (and the one included here) is barely above SD quality.

This is a very strange and boring movie. My sister said it was supposed to be good. The only good part of the movie is when it ended. I felt like I was in dentition watching this movie. I’d rather be stuck in traffic.

Trippy

I have the currently available iOS 12.2 and in the description of what I am purchasing with this title they describe iTunes Extras of 6 hours including a q&a with Director Richard Kelly, a Director’s cut as well as a 4K remastered Theatrical Release. Why are The iTunes Extras unavailable to me? Is this happening to other people?
As for the film this is among my top twenty must see films. But then again my favorite film above all others is Chris Marker’s Masterpiece “La Jetee” (1962). If you love Donnie Darko you owe it to yourself to see this film. It can be found in DVD format through The Criterion Collection. This you can probably get from your local public library. It is not feature length as it is 28 minutes long but it packs a great wallop non-the-less. If you ever get the chance to see it projected jump on the opportunity.

The subtitle on the extended version is waaaaaay off. It appears long after the dialogue has endes and when it does it’s all crammed together.

I like Gyllenhaal but this was simply a silly movie. A fairy tale that was boring. No need to watch it. I watched it since it was free. The music was great though, the only reason for the two stars.

Great movie!

Donnie Darko is a truly amazing film! The acting is great, the graphics are amazing, and of course, Frank is cool! This movie although great, was incredibly confusing. I couldn’t really understand it much, however it’s supposed to be like that. You have to sort of make up what really happened and the logic behind the story!

Don’t get me wrong it’s totally worth the $10, but the description of the movie says it is a 4K restoration and iTunes has it at 1080p. I would hope that with the Apple TV 4K the resolution would be bumped up.

One of my Favs. Complex, Calculated, and Believable

This film is one of my favorites. The scienticfic and psychological aspects are so complex and interesting that you'll be trying to find out what it all means after. It is extremly smart and well executed on Jake's part, while still capturing the essence and mind-set behind a teenager. Its dark, strange, and puzzling, the idea is completly unique and head spinning. A classic, must-see film.

I was hoping this second anniversary edition would have the same music as the original release, but it doesn't and from the beginning of the movie the mood is ruined because you're wanting the classic soundtrack. Again a huge let down for Darko fans.
