She must have been desperate. It really is that bad

Come on...really? Things hold together for the most part. But the ending leaves much to be desired. The ratcheting up of the tension works in the beginning. Everything goes well until sharks start doing what....well sharks don't do...a good performance by Ms Lively but I do feel the set pieces do her a disservice.

Was interested at the beginning but throughout the movie it got far fetched and corny....in a word this movie is disappointing....plenty of cgi...not nearly enough realism.

This movie was so bad and boring, glad I only wasted $0.99 on this.And I really started laughing at the end when they were saying that was Galveston.

I agree the beginning was good especially with the visual of her talking with family. Then it got bad and boring. Very labored scenes and it took forever. The dead whale was really just gross to me not to mention her sewing her wound. Again labored and boring. I turned it off 45 minutes into it and was thankful I paid only a rental fee and not full price.

The trailer for this movie looks better than the movie actually was. The cinematography was amazing, and Blake Lively's acting was great. The movie has a positive message about determination and feminism. But in the end, this is a movie about a shark. Halfway though, the suspense became less suspenseful and more tiring. Is this movie a classic? No. However, I do recommend it.

I thought the film was really pretty good for a shark attack flick. I have liked Blake Lively since Gossip Girl,lol. But there are a few scenes where they used a stunt double and basically faceswaped her face onto the stunt double. It's looked pretty funny. Besides that the it kept me biting my nails through the whole thing. And it was just scary enough, but not too much that I have to watch something funny before going to sleep. You all know what I'm talking about.

I rented the movie and when it fully loaded it said "rent movie?" Again and made me pay again it took my money this is stupid and I want my money back!😑

The only reason why anyone rated this 3 stars or higher is because they're in love with Blake Lively.

Everything from the multiple CGI's of her face on an actual surfer, to the absolutely-no-surprises plot - it all makes this movie worthless.

Literally, whatever you think is going to happen in this movie, you're right...no twists, no amazing feats of action, no gripping storyline...and a ridiculously Jaws-like shark to top it off. There are a couple of actual surfing shots, but most everything else is CGI or shots of random beach scenery.

Not a single redeeming trait.

It was amazing, I wanted to watch it again and again! Everything was so realistic and it kept me on the edge of my seat while watching. It test her survival skills and the independence of the main character. I almost threw up when she was stitching up her leg with her earrings, because I couldn't imagine the pain she was in. Overall it is now my favorite movie.

(P.S. - emw1069, I think Blake's acting was awesome, and I think in order to make the face she did you would really have to shove earrings through your leg. Also, I'd like to see you try and act the way she did.)

The only thing i was thinking during the final battle scene is "This shark is indestructible. It should be dead because it's getting stabbed in the mouth with metal rods, but what the heck, she lot the shark on fire while it was in water so, screw logic!" BTW

I saw this movie twice in theaters and it's still amazing. Great thriller, and It doesn't drag on. I was invested all the way through.

There has been a recent change in the SD vs. HD. Not only have rental prices gone up for both, but SD is now presented in a weird TERRIBLE resolution with screen going totally pixelated on and off. Like to show you, this is what you could have for an extra dollar. So annoying! Exactly as Apple planned I'm sure. I'm done. There are other options for watching on line. Adios Apple. You just lost a long time customer. Penny wise and pound foolish decision.

This was a great movie ...there was so many suspenseful parts that kept me hanging out of my seat Blake did an amazing job and though there were some parts without action it still added up to be great!

Everyone loves a good shark movie.. and Blake lively.. but this is not it! There didn't seem to be much of a story line whatsoever. Do not recommend

This movie is horrible too much talent not used correctly

A pretty girl who is stupid enough to surf in unknown waters by herself with a couple of strangers, then stays out late after said strangers have left for the day. She strips down so you can see her nubile assets, then pretends to surf - in slow motion, no less - but she becomes more interested in sea gulls and an injured animal. Slowly, she realizes something is just not right, and perhaps - maybe, just maybe - there is a shark in the water beneath her. No way! A shark?? Couldn't be. That's right, it's Jaws. Heck, the cover art of the stinking movie gives everything away!! And why would a young, gorgeous, kind hearted, do-gooder with big kahunas ever perish in such a Hollywood trope? Why am I asking myself this question? The only good part of this poorly executed flick is the camera work and scenery. I could watch those waves for hours, but just don't subject me to fake fish that have a vendetta against sexed up young women and seem to be one step ahead of a homo sapien. I have seen this snore fest about 9 times before... Nine times.... My sister got a car for her birthday and I got a computer.

Pretty sure he doesn't know the meaning of the word "twist". He is no M. Night Shymalan. There is more suspense playing "guess who farted" in the GI specialist waiting room.

I'd rather watch A Fran Drescher movie stuck repeating her stupid laugh over and over for that time than see "The Shallows" ever again.

If you want to know what the movie is like- watch "Jaws" and then watch "Open Water". That is what this is- except this movie is so much worse all around. It was like someone took a mediocre looking surf video and made it stupid with a recycled plot.

Watch the trailer. You see it. Save your money. Can't believe I bought this junk. I want a refund.

It’s clever and suspenseful. And easy to root for Lively’s character - trapped against a shark all alone. Sure, there are implausible parts, but it’s a movie.

The key to enjoy this movie is not to analyze it, if you put it under a microscope, it will break apart.

Just enjoy the beautiful scenery, and the exciting, albeit non-sensical, action.

I really liked it. It kept me on the edge of my seat biting my nails. I liked how it took its time telling the story. Couple of good "jump" moments. Worth the rent for sure.

Blake Lively does a great job as a med school student trying to re-discover a beach she once visited with her now-deceased mother. If you've seen the trailers, you know what shows up. The movie is gorgeous, and it has an atmospheric soundtrack. It is very much a slow burn. When the attack finally comes, it is visceral and powerful. Lively's character reacts in an intelligent, honest way, and I found her acting to be very good.

The downfall of the movie are the ridiculous and unnecessary twists that intended to make the shark even more frightening. Unfortunately, anyone with a vague knowledge of science will be jolted by the stupidity of some of this stuff. If they had stuck with the solid story and not added the stupid crap, this would have been a very good film.

I'm somewhere between 2 and 3 stars for the dumb filmmaker stunts that ruin a good story, but my wife and I were impressed with Lively and the gorgeous cinematography. I'm being generous with the 4 stars, but know going in that the stupid stuff might ruin it for you.

I had been reluctant to watch this movie, because there really has not been a good shark movie since Jaws, and a good shark movie for its time. When I finally gave in, I realized that this movie comes close to the suspense first sensed when Jaws was released. If they created a Shallows 2, I would watch it. The shark, and the suspense was more realistic than any other shark movie since Jaws.

A suspenseful, nail-biting watch. So the shark-in-the-water thing has been done to death, but not since Jaws have I actually ENJOYED watching this kind of film. It doesn't have the flare of a blockbuster movie, and it's not meant to, which to me makes it a bit more real than films like Jaws or Jurassic Park. As to people saying the shark looks CG--I don't know, I was too busy waiting to see if it would get its next meal!

The location for this movie was pretty amazing plus Blake lively.

Better than my expectations

I am a big Blake Lively fan and was very excited about this movie. I am so glad I rented this movie. It was exciting, suspensful, scary. It had great acting. I loved it, and wil be watching again.

So the movie starts off by having this huge 30 foot shark grab her by the leg and pull her under, she then manages to escape to crawl up onto a dead whale carcass. She looks down at ther leg and there is a set of teeth marks, barely braking the skin and no bigger than a baby shark would have made. The bite bled more under water than it does once she's out. That's the highlight, it only gets sillier from there. If you like seeing Blake Lively in a bikini, then by all means rent the movie. If you want to watch a real suspense movie - rent the usual suspects.

First, I'll admit I have a hetero girl crush on Blake Lively. Thank goodness, because she is 99% of this movie. Pretty good, and I liked how they didn't show all the core, the kind of employed the "Jaws" effect, that what you don't see, what you imagine, is probably worse than if they showed it happening. Drag here in there, as you see her watching, and waiting, and talking to the bird. But still, I was intrigued to see if or how she would get out of it. All in all not a bad movie. Not something I would watch a second time, but I enjoyed it.

Most of the itunes generation probably won't remember the first scene of the movie Jaws where the gorgeous drunk woman skinny dipping at night on a secluded beach gets eaten by a shark roughly the size of a Boeing 747. Well try to imagine if someone made an entire movie about that one scene and just to make it interesting added a Wiley Coyote, Road Runner twist. Throw in a couple of mexican surfers, a Go Pro and a drunken fat guy and you have "The Shallows" If you like bikinis and can accept the only people who get eaten in the movie speak Mexican then you will LOVE this movie.

Despite what I heard I really enjoyed this movie. I think it was one of the first shark movies since the Jaws franchise that really made me scared to go into the water. I enjoyed the plot and the build up to the shark attacks. I don't think the movie used too much CGI or special effects so it felt real. Give it a shot.

I found this movie stragely relaxing, maind due to the decent HD visuals. The shard effects were ok, not spectacular but good. In many ways this is a minimalist style movie since it focuses on one idealic beautiful location with some special effects/shard etc, tossed in. The story was interwoven in an acceptable melowdramatic fashion. I've never known much about Blake Lively other than hearing various snippets of junk about her in the media, I still don't know if she's mainly an actress or model whatever... but she was great in this movie role. She basically carries the entire movie and she pulls it off.

I didn't find the movie too terrifying or anything like that, but as shark flicks go it was stylish and actually relaxing to watch lol. SO, I don't know if that's a good thing for a shark flick, but somehow it worked for me. As for replay value... I'll have to boot it up again and see if I can make it through again without aborting it.

About halfway thru, I lost interest because the acting was terrible and it seemed to play on all of cliches of a typical "shark movie." I find it hard to believe that the shark stays in the same area for multiple days and that given he could easily feed on a defenseless whale floating in the water he instead goes after a girl that's got a paper cut in comparison and continues to pursue that same girl after mauling thru three people over various days. It just didn't do it for me and I'd suggest you save yourself an hour plus of time and do something more constructive.

After all the reviews comparing it mildly to JAWS this is a basic Blake Lively hot girl movie. Don’t get me wrong I like her, but this is just boring… I didn’t even warm to the seagull.

The shark loses. Blake Lively remains alive to fullfill her destiny of posing for bad movies and looking pretty. So close. Maybe next time?

This movie was a disappointing waste of time & money. The preview looked so much better; suspenseful and intriguing. What I ended up watching was boring, laughable and obnoxious. The acting was ok but the action sequences were what you would expect pre-Jurassic Park. It's 2016, not 1996 (or whenever that came out). Movies like Open Water worked to create tension and a foreboding sense of doom in the ocean and yet, hope for the characters to make it out alive. It worked because of its simplicity and realistic visuals; not some CGI crap.

If you're interested in this movie, rent it for $0.99. Anything more is far too much for this Jaws-meets-The Scorpion King in The Mummy Returns combo.

I went and saw this in the theater and the people who say this movie took forever to come out I was this like 2 or 3 months ago that's not long ... It wasn't bad and it wasn't great it was around an okay movie and a good movie

Starts out pretty good then goes about off the charts dumb... The killing of the shark totally annoying. If you can't make anything look more real or come up with a better story line than that, please go back to making porn movies or whatever the writers producer and makers of this movie did before. Save your money, save your time, save your brain cells , go take a nap your not missing nothing if you miss this movie.

That was some Road Runner and Wile E Coyote shenanigans. Pretty much ruined what was actually a pretty decent prelude.

If you are looking for a realistic movie about sharks...then don't bother and go watch Animal Planet or Shark Week. If you want to a good movie that has good action and a suspenseful story...then rent or buy this movie. There is no much character buildup or back story...we see the main character and the shark and the action never stops from there. Nice popcorn flick with no fluff

My goodness, the lure of getting a good bite out of Blake Lively , is too good to be true, but actually this is a very well done thriller in every respect, incredible cinematography and water scenes

This movie started good and I liked the actress, but about midways through things get pretty ridiculous. The shark is the size of a city bus and is way too intelligent. It does things no real shark could do, like bite through solid metal and knock a dead whale carcass out of the water. What started as a realistic and gripping thriller turns into a cartoon B-grade horror pic. I wouldn't have been so disappointed if the first half of the movie weren't so promising. You might enjoy it if you don't care about things like physics and logic, but I couldn't get past some of the silliness the filmmakers expect us to swallow.

5 Star Movie. This movie really makes me afraid of the water and sharks too

The movie was not what I was expecting. This seems cut at the wrong moments, I felt it needed deeper backstory. Was not enough about the shark even, it was a Shark movie what did I expect, more action, more cinematography, something? It was disapointing in that aspect, Blakes acting was amazing

It's funny how we see reviews from people that say they have issue with the lack of realism or unbelievable things they see in a movie. Hey, it's a movie. It's impossible to have realism in a movie because it's a movie. I see movies to be entertained, not have my reality challenged.

This movie is very well made and was entertained thoroughly. Hats off to the people that pulled the strings needed to put this movie in a theater for people to see. Just outstanding work!

It wasn't until there was 45 minutes left of the movie did anything start to happen to make me want to wanna watch the rest. I waited for this movie to be released and shouldn't have thought because Blake lively can't act to begin with that this movie would be anything except an flop. I can't really see that this movie had an big budget except maybe to spend caffeine to keep the cast and crew awake while making this movie.

It was good! Was not expecting what I saw.

This movie looked extremely exciting and cool to me, and I could not wait to watch it. I then watched it and regreted wasting my time. I assumed the movie would be action packed and exciting, but it was the opposite. The filming in the water looked like they used a crappy GoPro and edited it in their free time. They did not take this movie seriouly at all. I also assumed that since Blake Lively was starring, it would be great but she wasnt. All you heard the entire time was her grunting and moaning and I was extremely annoyed. Overall I felt let down and angry that I spent my time and money watching this horrible movie.

Going to this movie, I wasn't expecting much. The trailer made it seem that all the movie was going to be was the main character sitting on a rock. While that mainly was the extent of the movie, the Shallows did just enough to be considered an okay flick. I wouldn't go as far as some people are by saying that it is the best shark movie since jaws though there hasn't exactly been any great shark movies since then. The Shallows is about a Nancy who decides to visit her recently departed mom's favorite beach in Mexico. Things take a turn for the worse when Nancy finds herself fighting for her life against a shark who is preying on her. Nancy must figure out how to outsmart the shark and to save herself. I don't think I will watch this movie again but by no means was it a terrible movie.

This movie was ALOT better than I expected. The CGI was so realistic that I almost thought it was a real shark. And the scenes with the main character in peril had me at the edge of my seat, unable to anticipate what was yet to come. But to top this movie off were those music-less scenes featuring the main character screaming in agony, which just makes you want to wince as if feeling the pain yourself. Overall this survival movie was great! And if you're into that kind of genre then this is the movie for you!

Saw this movie during the middle of the week, wanted to have a day to myself, so I figured what the heck, I will try it. I went in thinking it was going to be a bad version of Jaws, but I accepted my choice. I could not have been more wrong. This movie is well acted, has great suprises, a great story/plot and overall was a huge suprise. I really recommend this, great popcorn summer flick.

This movie was a lot of fun watching n theaters, there are so many great shots in this movie. The underwater shots and above ground shots were amazing. This movie also gives really good tense situations which are true edge of your seat moments. Lastly, most of the movie is just Blake lively, so most of the movie rides on her performance and she knocks it out of the park

This movie made me laugh the entire time. It's on the same level as "Anaconda" yet even more lame because that movie came out more than a decade ago. LOL! Oh no!...watch out for the cheesy CGI sharks next time you're in the water! HA HA HA!
