Description

New England, 1630. Upon threat of banishment by the church, an English farmer leaves his colonial plantation, relocating his wife and five children to a remote plot of land on the edge of an ominous forest — within which lurks an unknown evil. Strange and unsettling things begin to happen almost immediately — animals turn malevolent, crops fail, and one child disappears as another becomes seemingly possessed by an evil spirit. With suspicion and paranoia mounting, family members accuse teenage daughter Thomasin of witchcraft, charges she adamantly denies. As circumstances grow more treacherous, each family member's faith, loyalty and love become tested in shocking and unforgettable ways.

This is one of the most beautiful movies I've watched in a while. Although a little slow at first, it's a dark film with unsuspected twists, better than most horror movies thrown out nowadays. It has its fair share of gore, so keep that in mind. And keep a light or two on.

There is nothing "horror" about this. This is a movie where nothing happens and is so boring. I don't know what everyone is watching that gave this 5-stars

It was a good "non-meta" horror movie.

Pretty much a drudge. Could have been much better with a more skilled and more imaginative director. The only thing this director is good at is at making the mood of the audience as gray as the scenery. Many Americans will find it difficult to make out much of the dialogue. The entire story could have been told in fifteen minutes and it has a so-what ending. Scary? No.

Thine movie doth sucketh.

It's interesting - many times people complain about a trailer giving away the movie. I felt in this case, the trailer gives you a completely false idea of what the movie is. I expected a much more thrilling type of film and it just wasn't. I found it dull.

This movie did not live up to the hype. There are good performances from the main players, and the director did a good job of creating an atmosphere of creeping dread. However, it really wasn't scary and the payoff seemed to invalidate the central conflict. The infividual plot elements did not hang together well.

So first off, this is an art film, so definitely not the usual type of horror film some come to expect. I understand why a lot of people love this film and I understand how some abhor it. I fall in the middle. I appreciated the film but can't say I'm a big fan. Every five minutes this family was praying and the accents and dialect (though acted well and true to period) became a headache. I just kept looking at my watch and waiting for the family to start praying again, and again, and again. The ending was quite eerie and I guess as good an ending as one could expect for this artsy sub genre of horror. So if you only like horror movies like Ouija, you will hate this film. If you like art films, you will probably love it. If you are like me in the middle, it's worth a rent. Btw, you could probably make a drinking game out of how many times this family prays during the movie...it might bring a whole new dynamic to your watching experience. I'm serious. Try it.😁

This is definitely a movie that will hold your attention, and it is beautifully scripted and acted. The cinematography is also stellar. I think that's why people think they have to rate it so highly. None of this, however, can overcome the ridiculous ending that extends from the movie not having been able to decide whether it would be about a witch, or about people believing in witches.

If you were a pilgrim and a woman you were a witch. Hollywood has taught me that and they haven't brought anything new to the table. This movie made me want to hurt myself. I could have spent the time learning how to knit so I could make safety mittens. If someone is your "friend" and they tell you to watch this then think for a moment. Are they really your friend? Or do you really seem like that miserable of a person? Gross movie.

As someone who has watched more than their fair share of horror movies, this one sits near the top of my favorites list. It is an historically accurate portrayal of 17th century Pre-Colonial life in North American New England. The speech and language were extremely accurate. Don’t let the fact that the first printed Bible had only been released a generation earlier, and was written in the current common language and tongue. The dress was accurate. The housing was accurate. And without a doubt the cultural understanding of the purveyance of evil was accurate.
This film was not meant to entertain as much as it is meant to offer the viewer a look into a time long past, not tainted with our experiences, but it allows us to experience life as thy would have experienced it. To stand in the 21st century and judge this movie is missing the point, but to stand in 17th century New England, having been banished from the colony and the Church, in a land that is foreign to you in every way possible. Knowing all too well that the darkness of in the woods hides the most horrifying of terrors to you, Indians, the unknown, with their witnessed magic and sorcery. Knowing that they, as “heathen” who worship not your God, worship Satan. No Neighbors, no fellowship with others, being banished out into darkness.
Without a doubt, allowing myself to travel back in time to see this as a real homestead on the border of the Unknownland, the woods, I see that the things that happens were all not only extremely plausible, but highly probable.

A not scary, scary movie

I rented this movie for 99 cents on Halloween… and I am perplexed by all the positive reviews ?!! Truly puzzling... and bizarre ! The Witch seems to be more about an effort to celebrate… extol and parade the powers of evil over the power of God. It portrays the characters who have faith in God as mentally unstable, powerless, helpless and totally ignorant (supposedly due to the time period in which it takes place). Although the satanic campaign, is an ongoing, persistent and vile parasite within Follywood. So, having said this… if you like twisted and repulsive subject matter, such as a witch murdering a baby and rubbing its blood all over her ghastly body, or a little boy getting bitten in the mouth by a horrible hag from Hell disguised as an attractive woman and then the boy turns up at home completely naked and possessed by evil, then… he smiles sarcastically as he says his last prayers before he dies. Or, how about a man being gored to death by the horns of a possessed goat ? Or a young girl murdering her mother ? If any of this sounds good to you… then by all means, contaminate your mind and psyche a little more (appease the Follywood beast machine) and rent or buy the movie. However, IF you happen to be somewhat normal and sane in a world that has clearly gone mad… then you may want to avoid this movie like the plague !

WOW! What an incredible horror movie.

Let me start off by saying not everyone will like this. If you're a fan of the "modern" horror movies where jump scares and gore reign supreme, you will probably not like this. If you're a fan of the older, more slow and chilling horror films (like Suspiria or the original Wicker Man) this is for you.
Let me start by saying the movie ranks very high on the authenticity scale. Not only do the actors speak in old world language, but they have accents too. I found it easiest to watch this movie with subtitles on (don't let that scare you away from the film though). The dress and sets also look straight out of the 1600s. The world is very believable.
The horror is slow and creeping in this movie and the end literally gave me chills. I really did not expect what happened to happen. There was no guessing this ending.
The soundtrack is incredible too. There isn't much to it, but the creepy sounds add to the armosphere of unease.
I just absolutely loved this film despite thinking I wasn't going to like it for about the first 20-30 minutes.

For the classic horror fans.

This is one of the worst movies I have ever seen. I'm seriously sorry I wasted 90 minutes of my conscious mind watching such utter garbage ! ! ! I LOVE real horror and scary movies, this was not that. The people who gave it a 91% tomato rating are total idiots!! There was blood and gore, but the only surprise scares where when everything was quiet and in the transition, suddenly the loud sound of the father chopping a piece of wood in half with his axe!
False accusations among family members, we still don't know where the two young brats went or were taken. Utter garbage and a total waste of time, thank God I only rented it and then for only 99 cents, I'd feel totally ripped off if I'd foolishly wasted $4 or $5 to see this junk ! ! !

This suspense is great in the acting and scenary of the times, but it is far from a horror. The only movement it seems to posses is in the last 15 minutes and even then appears dull to the senses for a proper ending. It could have been so much better.

This is a period movie based on the historical folklore of early colonial America.
Nearly all of the lines of dialogue is taken from colonial folklore books and from the diaries of real-life colonial Americans. It's easy to see how the superstitions of the time gave way to the things like the Salem witch trials.
The movie a slow burn that is a little bit creepy, but it isn't scary in the traditional sense of the word. It's fascinating, and its scares are more psychological.
People can be evil, and people are generally naive and gullible. The combination of those two traits has destroyed a lot of lives.
One reviewer said that watching The Witch is like witnessing something we shouldn't be seeing.
That's a good description.

YAWN! Take note that the ratings seem to be polarized. People either loved this movie, or that hated it. Warning: Spoilers... The script provides no backstory at all. It's hard to be spooked by a witch when you don't know anything about her, where she came from, why she's in the forest, why she stole the baby, why she's harassing the family. It felt like the second half of a movie that had the potential to be really good, had they explained more.

This is not your typical horror movie. You won't find yourself being scared, nothing will jump out of you and very little gore is shown on camera. This movie is too smart for any of that.
The Witch will leave you unsettled and wanting to cleanse your soul, even if you aren't a believer.

If you are looking for something in line with "Insidious", then keep looking. This is a horror film for the mature horror fan with a true appreciation for the genre. It has no flashy effects or big scares, but that is what makes it feel so real and believable. If you are a parent of small children, then this film would be truly terrifying to you. The creepiness of the scenery and characters is top-notch. People complain about the dialog, and it is painstakingly done to properly depict the dialect of the time. It was hard to follow at times, but hey, since you rented the film, just rewind and listen to the scene again until you get it. Best I've seen in a while.

I'm a fan of movies dealing with witchcraft and fiction. The trailer for this movie was exhilarating, after buying the movie I wish there was a rent option but since it's new it's all or nothing. Waste of time and money. It's not a cheap thrill to want to be scared and jump from a movie. This movie had no suspense, it had a cruising, going through the motions, feel to it. Both my friend and I watched and agreed this movie lacked major scenes this film could have included to make it a much deeper film. Now it will remain in my iTunes, and never watched again.

This movie is set back in the 1600’s. The movie is very true to the time period, the language, the despair. In many ways it tries and succeeds in the recreation of the past and feel of the 1600s, even following with the language from that time period. You will probably struggle to understand the characters as they speak at first. It is a CHARACTER STUDY with a horror twist. So what you must understand is that part of the beauty of this film is first understanding how to put the film in its proper time period/perspective. It is slow moving, has thick accents, and has a very puritan feel on purpose. It will not scare you out of your seat, it is a different type of horror, no this is NOT your average horror movie. If you can see this movie for what it truly is meant to be, you will get it. IF you go into this movie expecting it to be your average horror film, a Blair Witch, a Friday The 13th… then your best off moving on. You WILL feel cheated.
You must really think about this movie and appreciate the subtle nod to the history it brings forth. This is not a simple film. Be warned, it is slow, plods along, builds tension until the final act… it is on many levels… realistic. Loved it.

Hollywood has forgotten what real horror is and has substituded horror with jump scares and blood....until now. This was the most unpredictable horror film I have ever seen. It brings me back to the times of horror stories told by grandparents to scare children into obedience. The dark tales of curses and evil. This is one of those flicks, real horror.

Why the R rating?

That’s what makes this film as scary as it is. The Exorcist brings out the same feelings, the same experience. The mood is perfect, you can physically feel the tension building, you know these poor souls are truly on their own, and, like one reviewer said, it’s like we are witness to something we aren’t supposed to be seeing. It’s that creepy. Hollywood rarely gets it right. They knocked it out of the park with this one. For the naysayers, meh. Watch it for the entire experience. It gets under your skin and stays there. It is hard to watch in some parts. The ending blew me away. And I still have questions.

If you aren't religious, don't see this movie. The movie mediocrely attempts to build suspense but is useless when the build up amounts to very anticlimactic scenes and relies on the viewer's stance on their belief in witches.

Exquisitely Creepy

Most of the reviews of this movie are half and half; you either love it or you hate it. Let me put it really simply (from a person who LOVES horror and is also very critical), this film is GORGEOUS and deeply disturbing. It is both truly original and intelligent; a rare combination. It is not exactly scary; you have to think like you are from this era for it to be frightening. If you can’t do that, and you are expecting to see gore and jumps throughout the film, you will be disappointed. If you can’t appreciate (or listen to) old literature and language, this is not for you. If you are well educated and can think from a different perspective, you will love it.

This director Robert Eggers had created a modern masterpiece, not only of the genre, but of storytelling.

So my dad and I decide to go watch a late movie, and I drag him to this horror flick because it's getting great reviews.....first off even though the sound was good it was very difficult to follow the dialogue due to the heavy accents throughout the film...you have really pay attention to make sure you understand what's being said (maybe subtitles will make the movie clearer). Secondly, yes, strange things happen on this colonial farm...but this film was not even close to what I would call "horror". Trust me...if you're going to watch this movie thinking you're going to be seeing witches all over the place you're wrong...I think you see witches 3 times. Lastly, you're going to be leaving the theatre thinking I paid all that money, sat through this, for that? After the movies was over I looked at my father, apologized for bringing him to it, and said "that was definitely not what I expected. My dad looked at me and said, "could you understand anything they were saying?"

Thrilling, suspenseful, and extremely dark.

For the past two years, there have been only one good horror flick each year. In 2014, it was The Babadook. In 2015, it was It Follows. 2016's came early. The Witch is eerie and haunting, and a very enjoyable film if you're sick of cheap jumpscares.

Amazing!

This movies was by far the stupidest I have seen. None of it makes sense to the previous event in the movie and it was just plain dumb. Total waste of money if you ask me.

I thought the Village was the worst piece of crap horror/suspense movie I'd ever see. I stand corrected. This was a horror alright, or horrible to be more precise. How any horror movie could have less horror than the Blair Witch Project I don't know but in 2016, that is exactly what this is.
The only truly scary part of this movie is how anyone can rate it higher than 1 star. There must be at least some witches among us. How else could people of sound mind vote this movie above 1 star? Or anything even watchable.

A Pure Gothic Nightmare

This film was, without a doubt, the most unnerving horror experience I have ever had. Not only was this a pure nightmare brought to life, but this was also a brilliantly intense and ominous cinematic work of art. With an incredibly talented cast, beautiful cinematography, nightmarish visuals, and the most disturbing conclusion I have ever scene, Robert Eggers has created the next grand horror film that follows the infinite darkness of THE SHINING and blends that with the nightmarish world of Puritan folklore and superstition. The wilderness is terrifying once again, and the beasts of this world and the next have found their way back to stimulating primitive fear. Ladies and gentlemen, we officially have a new horror masterpiece!

Stunning, original films stays with you.

New Englander Robert Eggers landed a cinematic knockout in his directorial debut. Awarded at Sundance with good reason, this eerie tale with indie qualities is authentic to the time in art design and language (four years of research paid off), with themes that are also timeless: foolish pride, superstition, sexual awakening, sibling conflict and self-doubt. This trip to 1630 stayed with me so strongly, I saw it a second time in the theater. Thank-you, thank-you, A24 for bringing this (along with Ex Machina, Room and other mold-breaking films) to American audiences.

I'll admit, this movie is not for everyone. It's definitely not for someone who is looking for some cheap jump scares. This is not that kind of horror movie. I personally like all kinds of horror movies. The kind that are cheesy, gory, slow paced, filled with jump scares, etc. I like them all. This movie is slow but it's like a ghost story in the sense that it doesn't scare you so much visually, but it makes you feel eerie. This movie creeped me out and made me think a lot about how religion played into the decisions and outcomes of many families and how they dealt with tragedy in those times. The acting was phenomenal, specifically from Ana Taylor Joy and the boy who played her brother. The accents were not personally hard for me to understand, but that's me. The scenery and the way the movie was shot was also really enjoyable and it added to the creep factor since the family lived in the middle of nowhere next to the woods. I just don't understand why all the people that hate it so much have to bash others for liking it. So you thought it was slow, so what? If you didn't like it I respect that, but respect that people saw this and enjoyed the creep factor of it. Not all of us need guts and gore to enjoy a horror movie. I look forward to buying this movie when it comes out!

Let it simmer

This film had a lot of hype built up about it. I'm a huge fan of the genre and even teach a college course on horror films. All the previous reviews are correct, you don't get cheap scares. It's a smart person's horror film and a fantastic study on the folklore of witches. It even mentions that it is a folk tale. It's The Shining meets The Exorcist meets history. It's not full of scariness like my favorite horror of last year, The Babadook. But when you get to the climax of the film it all comes together. So if you want to think about your horror let it simmer on this one. If you want to pee your pants go watch something a little more cheap.

Yawn

Just went and saw this in the theater, I was quite dissapointed. Mostly just a family being sad in the woods with a little supernatural tossed into the last 10 min.

Watch out this is a serious horror movie!

The Witch is a breath of terrifyingly fresh air for the horror genre and fans alike. With the old English dialogue, terrifyingly lengthy reaction shots and an honestly grim depiction of 17th century America, the grief that befalls upon this family feels even more realistic once it unfolds. The scares aren't cheap, which sadly normal audiences have scummed to as the new "norm" of horror. It's scares come from the heaviness and tension the environment offers throughout the entirety of the film. With disturbing imagery and a stark realization of our country in these desperate times, The Witch offers nothing but terror and dread from start to finish, from the very moment we step foot into those woods, to the moment the screen goes black.

Although a little over hyped I will say this is an exceptionally well made film esp for a first time director. The performances are solid, the score is tense, and visually unsettling. Overall I found this movie to be more depressing than scary, but it is original and its best horror film I've seen since "It Follows" last year! Definitely worth watching once, but I don't think I would watch it again. 7/10

Wonderful!

Disregard the previous comment: there was no jump scares in this movie - and that’s OK! Nowadays, the horror genre focuses too hard on either the gore (ahem…SAW) or the jump scares, when really all you need to understand is the real definition of horror. Mr. Eggers does exactly that. Building off of the Puritan repression, this small family soon finds itself in it’s own personal hell as things take a supernatural turn as winter begins to approach. This film was by far one of my favorite horror movies in such a long time, for it isn’t “OMG THAT WAS SO TERRIFYING” of a film, it’s more of an unsettling/disturbing, makes you think, gets your skin crawling, biting your lip because you’re nervous sort of film. This folklore of a scary movie is definitely one I’ll see again and again, as well as push on other horror fans, while definitely buying my own copy. Loved it.

Such a tense flick.

While nothing on screen was visually scary (other than a few 'jump scares') the atmosphere and the attitude of the actors made for a VERY tense viewing all around.
