If Guy Ritchie would only stop acting like a freshman film major who just discovered the zoom on his camera, this movie would have been near perfect.
Everyone seems to be having a great time. The characters genuinely seem to like each other. There's a nostalgic, glamorous haze to the proceedings.
And yet Ritchie can't resist the temptation to Guy Ritchie his movie to death. The zoom in and out shots, the music, the "hurry up let's reveal the clever thing the character missed" montage ending. It's so distracting. And unlike, say, Quention Tarantino, Ritchie can't get away with loudly plopping himself down in the middle of his own movie and announcing "Look at me! Look at me! I'm a director." Or perhaps more to the point, Tarantino whispers it, while Ritchie screams.
Look, it's a buddy film. It's a fun remake, and that's all it is. Just let it be that.
Otherwise, it's still quite enjoyable, much better than Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation, which is equally obnoxious while being far more played out.
