I’ve tried every writing and note taking app out there. Notability keeps pushing the envelope, listening to user feedback, and offers features exceeding any other. Between iCloud backups and ability to interface with Google and other online drives it “just works” (apologies to Steve Jobs).

The fact that you can record audio lectures and the app can turn handwriting into text is cool, but stuff like randomly loading up notes at will is so poor. If you plan to get the app: syncing across multiple devices, or having the auto-back-up feature will horrendously disturb your workflow. I suggest you save your money and space.

Don’t buy the “convert to text” feature

The convert to text feature is useless. When I write something, instead of converting in a text that is aligned with my writing, it put my text on a text box so I have to move around instead.

For $9 you cannot search your notes, use handwriting to text, or handwriting to math equation. You have to pay $3 for handwriting to text and searching your notes and another $3 for equations. These features are touted as reasons to buy Notability.
Let me be clear: for $9 you get LESS FEATURES than the default notes app. Save your money and use the default iPad app.
Insult the injury, they would not refund my money after appealing twice. So I threw $9 down the drain for an app I can’t use.

Please improve the shapes tool and the highlighter

2 important improvements to make:
Please improve line and circle recognition, maybe add an option to draw in a straight line because it’s really hard to use right now as much as I love it, have to use GoodNotes when it comes to Geometry or anything shape related.
Also please make it possible to have the highlighter not cover the text like it doesn’t on GoodNotes so that the pen is still just as clear.
Also, could you add an option for a pen size between the 2nd biggest and the 3rd biggest? More options would be great, just as GoodNotes has.
Otherwise love it, my favorite iPad app.

Been using this app for all my classes which is really great but I wish I didn’t have to get the medium dotted templates from their website as it’s a hassle and I can’t easily switch to the blank paper format after writing . I feel that notability is great compared to good notes but good notes has way more templates which makes it a slightly attractive option when compared to notability.

Great app, the devs really do a fantastic job, and are responsive with updates. On that, the latest update replaces ALL Dark Theme color tabs with super bright blue versions + white text. Barely readable, and blinding. Previously these were mid/royal blue and dark blue, with the unfiled notes tab left uncolored. Now even tabs in the light themes are darker than the dark ones. Shades of grey would be far better than the shades of ultra-bright baby blues on white.

I have been a happy customer and have encouraged so many people to use notability. Recently, I lost all my tags and organizations. Logged in, no files were deleted but I now have 688 unorganized notes, when I had them broken down by year, and weeks. Do better..... I did not even get an email back from you guys

No, this is not acceptable to leave off the 31st day of a month. Seems to have several views of each day that aren’t linked. The monthly view doesn’t let you drill down to a day view by tapping in a day; just let’s you scribble on it. Week;y check-in view has tiny boxes that are too small to write-in, and no visible way to expand them. Clicking on something just creates a pop-up that says, here, click this!

They can’t figure out syncing

Have been using it for a number of years. Along the way I’ve tried others, they all fail to supplant this most excellent app. It is easy to use and organize notes. Comes with a wide range of paper and pen color options. I could do without the Recent and Unfiled notes in the left hand tool bar, in fact I’d like a bit more control over that but everything else this app does and allows makes it the best. Period.

We have been asking for years for you to implement a table maker. It’s literally not that hard. I’m sure the math equation converter would be much harder. Take some notes from Microsoft word and get it done! We have been asking since 2018 for this simple yet incredibly important feature. I don’t know if any of of the people who develop this app have ever taken notes, but in my experience, and many others, tables are very useful and I thought would be implemented before the role out of a so-called “note-taking app”. 2 stars because the app is mostly fine but the team who develops it are willfully ignorant of the app users.

This app is great for taking notes and doing homework during my online classes. Due to COVID, it has been very difficult to take notes over my zoom classes on paper but with this app, I have managed to keep my grades up and stay on top of homework. The only issue is that the app is already expensive to begin with and the themes and technology options cost up to $2.99 within the in-app purchases. I only wish they had sales and/or bundles on holidays for example, because then would I be willing to spend a little bit of money to further reach my educational goals. These times are very difficult for families and it would be great if they took that into account.

...But the laptop version is hot garbage. It doesn’t sync properly, the search function works 60 percent of the time, and I’ve even seen it place highlights from other notes into a note I’m looking at. It’s also slow on laptop and can be slow on iPad depending on how many notes you have. The laptop version is also not very user friendly nor intuitive like the iPad version. The iPad version is revolutionary but the laptop should be avoided at all costs.

This app is awesome and I use it on a daily basis. I take a lot of notes using my keyboard but now I found myself using my apple pencil just as much. I notice if I am write using my Apple Pencil or even if I add a picture then decide to go back to jot something down above my writing, the text start to overlap my writing instead of my writing or picture sliding down like on Apple notes. I wish in the next update hopefully sooner than later this can be fixed because this seems to be a huge disadvantage over Apple notes. I would like whatever I write using handwriting or added picture to stay aligned with the text. You are able to use wrap around but even using that feature the text just keep moving down and the picture is no longer aligned with the text i placed it with. This would be an awesome update even if it's a way to turn it on or off would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

I really enjoy reading and taking notes on notability but I think the one thing that keeps it from being practically perfect, is that it does not have a text “pop-out” box like in PDF Expert. The ability to add more “hidden notes” into your notes would be extremely beneficial especially with PDFs since we can’t edit the text of the PDFs.

I’m a note taker. Taking notes in meetings and on calls keeps me focused and gives me a reliable record. For 20 years I’ve wanted an app that would allow me to do that electronically. Typing notes doesn’t work for me, something about writing them does.
With Notability plus an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil I finally have the setup that allows me to take notes in a completely natural style and then save them electronically so that I have access anywhere at anytime. I use this app every single day.

Not my favorite notes app.
-Constantly takes forever to load my slides (which is not an internet or storage space issue). Definitely irritating because your professors sure won’t wait for you!
-Added a feature that many people have been asking for for ages (converting math to text) but is asking for us to pay for it on top of the $10(?) price for notability itself.
- You can only add an A4 page and can’t customize page size even if you just want to add a brief note below imported slides/pdf. I understand this might be an exporting issue, but if you’re not planning on exporting, it’s simply visually unappealing and confusing.
I would love to see these improvements and I would recommend anyone interested in notability to also look into other notes apps, unless you’re looking for voice recording, which is one thing notability does well.

So I was deciding between GoodNotes and this app and what sold me was the web clip feature. I watched numerous tutorials how you just click WebClip icon and it creates a window and once you find an image you click Done button on the right hand corner. Well that feature is gone! Now as far as I understand from another tutorial you are supposed to drag a url into app but my problem is there’s nowhere to drag since the safari pops up as its own window and not on the side. I asked for support, they don’t respond. There’s no tutorial online. What good is the feature that doesn’t exist anymore and why did they take away something so easy and just made it impossible to use??. So disappointed and regret buying this app. I wanted to be able to insert pics from the web. Right now my only option is go online separately and save images on the device and then reopen the clunky outdated app that is completely useless. I hate it.

This could easily be the best note taking app available on the App Store for the iPad, but unfortunately it lacks basic obvious features and tools that would compliment other tools and features, and its plagued with issues..specifically having to do with various tools. Everything from converting to text and math, and styling and manipulating objects, etc, etc, there are so many issues, too many problems to list here...its so darn frustrating how imperfect the tools are. I rely on this app heavily, so it’s just so frustrating how unpolished the app is as a whole. This could easily be a perfect app, no question, and the fact that it isn’t makes me think the developers either don’t care, or they have a terrible leader who doesn’t know how to guide the app past its problems and over to perfection. So darn frustrating.

I love this app for taking notes and recording lectures. However, I wish it had a 2 page view (like a book/notebook) for when you are trying to view your notes. This feature would help greatly if you need to export the notes and print them.

It is a great app , organizing my files and easy to use, write, drow, and design.
I like how can I add my lectures inside particular subject.
But there are some problems:
- I would like to read my notes on the PowerPoint slides, like when I put my PowerPoint file on notability the nots won’t show up .
- When I use pdf file there are stickers or notes won’t show up too because I am a student I download lectures which have notes so I need it.
In the end I loved it so much and I hope to see new changes.

Massive bug on the first generation iPad Pro. When you create a new note it does not allow you to draw. You can click the pencil as many times as you want but you cannot draw it will just allow you to scroll. Do not download or buy until this is fixed! Unuseable!
