Description

With over 110 million copies of his novels in print, David Baldacci is one of the most widely read storytellers in the world. Now he introduces a startling, original new character: a man with perfect memory who must solve his own family's murder.
MEMORY MAN
Amos Decker's life changed forever--twice.
The first time was on the gridiron. A big, towering athlete, he was the only person from his hometown of Burlington ever to go pro. But his career ended before it had a chance to begin. On his very first play, a violent helmet-to-helmet collision knocked him off the field for good, and left him with an improbable side effect--he can never forget anything.
The second time was at home nearly two decades later. Now a police detective, Decker returned from a stakeout one evening and entered a nightmare--his wife, young daughter, and brother-in-law had been murdered. His family destroyed, their killer's identity as mysterious as the motive behind the crime, and unable to forget a single detail from that horrible night, Decker finds his world collapsing around him. He leaves the police force, loses his home, and winds up on the street, taking piecemeal jobs as a private investigator when he can.
But over a year later, a man turns himself in to the police and confesses to the murders. At the same time a horrific event nearly brings Burlington to its knees, and Decker is called back in to help with this investigation. Decker also seizes his chance to learn what really happened to his family that night. To uncover the stunning truth, he must use his remarkable gifts and confront the burdens that go along with them. He must endure the memories he would much rather forget. And he may have to make the ultimate sacrifice.
MEMORY MAN will stay with you long after the turn of the final page.

Wow!

This is the first book I've ever read from Baldacci. I am a fan! This may be the first book I've read every single word of. I'm normally a skimmer.

"Memory Man"

I am a fan of David Baldacci, I read most everything he writes.
This book is, was terrible in all facets, in my opinion. The idea of the lead character with his abilities is intriguing, it just did not work in this setting.

Awesome Read !

This was a great read from a great author. Imagine a personal life changing event that leads to murder and mayhem. Imagine that you now have an eidetic memory and see things in color. Imagine you're a cop with all this. Now you have the setting for a great piece of fiction. This book will keep you hooked from beginning to end.

One of his Best!

I've read David Baldacci books since the very beginning and I've never been disappointed in a single one. This is one of his best. All the right elements of good story telling and a plot that moves like the wind.

I am a Baldacci fan, and I gave this one my best shot, but I cannot subject myself to this torture.

One of Baldacci’s Best

I’m a long-time fan…read nearly every Baldacci book…King and Maxwell are enjoyable characters, depending which book...really love John Puller character, in every book…But Amos Decker is just as likable, if not more so! And Dekker’s reflection style – random clipped thought – is a refreshing character attribute. Loved it!

What a BIG Surprize!

An usually bland opening that in no way will prepare the reader for the intricate maze of "incidents", characters, and unsuspected twists. Each relatively short chapter can be summarized as a logical, yet low keyed, extension of the previous chapter. Action builds to a higher intensity--ending with just the right hook to pull, drive and/or lead you into the next chapter. The majority of the characters have a rough edge that smoothes and becomes family. The main character retains a consistency of skill, knowledge, intuition, and facts that leads the puzzle pieces into place from almost a three dimensional route. These are characters I hope to see/read more of. Please take the time to make the next episode as great as this. Thanks for a great read! Caution...if you have an important task to complete, you may wish to finish that first, for you will find yourself reading this for the pure pleasure.

Another great one by a story master

As all David Baldacci books this is no different and does not disappoint. As always he keeps you turning pages and wondering where this might just end up. It twists and turns and you have no idea whats really going on until the last few chapters. Can't wait to read more in this series.

Memory Man

Without having read many whodunnits lately, the plot line could not be more far-fetched.
The text references "In Cold Blood" a couple of times, and while there could be comparisons of the types of do-ers, Capote's work is far superior.
I wanted it to end a lot sooner than it did.
I do not understand the other gushing reviews.
The research was done, and Baldacci seems to be a capable writer, but the story lost my interest with too many unlikely directions.

Best Baldacci book possibly ever

The short version: this is probably the best Baldacci book ever, if not a top 3. Download this without hesitation.
The longer version: this really is an absolute page turner. Outside of the typical cheesy dialogue lines in most fiction books (including you Baldacci!), Memory Man had me guessing the entire time. Very, very good book with a unique main character.

Interesting premise of a man who remembers every detail, but the story itself was both predictable and downright silly.

Absolutely awful!

Don't know why I even gave it two stars. So disappointed. I struggled to complete it. Baldacci is so inconsistent in his writings. I ordered this as a pre-release. Never again will that with one of his books.

Memory Man

I'm amazed at David Baldacci's ability to create unique characters, and then to devise a plot, which hooks the reader to the point of almost total concentration! I hope we will meet Amos Decker again in future works!
Creating characters that the reader cares about is key to maintaining interest and Mr. Baldacci's is a master at that!

Meh. Not captivating

By the book title I decided to see what this book was about. I love suspense & mystery, and after reading a little about it, it totally seemed like the perfect book to read.
I thought it was going to be more suspenseful. It's really really slow in the middle when he's searching and playing the "game". Only to find out the ending was just one incident..... Not even something that was compelling enough to be the reason why his family was murdered. It was kind of like, " I read all of this, played the game, and this is the outcome?? " I didn't have a "ahhhh" moment, or a gasp. Not once. There were so many repeats that i thought I was going to have to stop reading it.
Idk. Not my kind of book.
But the idea of a memory man & having him able to solve murders, is smart. Bet not how it was portrayed in the book itself.

Memory man

A different type of detective novel with the lead having a incredible memory I hope to see additional books in this series. One issue I have is this is the second person to have a time clock in his head. First it was Pulver and now Amos and both are rip offs of Rapp. Is keeping time in your head a new super power.

Baldacci at his best

I never miss a Baldacci book and I've never been disappointed. This book is the opposite of Wish You Well which I still rave about to friends. Both are kinda out of character for Baldacci. Note: I'm only about 1/3 finished with this book but I'm so captivated and couldn't wait to write this review. There's no big conspiracy yet but this story will grip you from page one. Just get it. Like I said, Baldacci never disappoints.

Defies logic

This is another book of trick solutions to the authors problem of making it believable. In this case lots of tricks and ridiculous solutions. The protagonists and the antagonists are not very likable. The only redeeming qualities are the discussions on memory and how it can be affected and insight on sexual ambiguity. Neither account is worth wading through a tedious story of a man with no feelings except depressing memories about his grossly murdered family. The reason for their murders was not believable.
Picking memory was his hook to do this story but I never cared about the characters or accepted the story as possible.
My last book by this author.

Baldacci's new writing style doesn't compare to his old writing style!

Did Baldacci use a ghost writer to write this book for him? I have read all of Baldacci's books and this was was a grave disappointment. Poorly written...a story that was stretched out too long... He has lost his previously compelling ability to grab the reader from the first page. Time for him to throw in the towel...

I'll remember this one... (Pun intended :-)

Baldacci did good! This main character, Amos Decker, is different -- he doesn't have a studly body and the understanding wife/partner/girlfriend.... He's flawed in a very relatable way, even if he has total recall and amazing deductive reasoning.
I could easily identify with Decker at times; other times, I was just as clueless as his colleagues. Moving in and out of his mind kept the narrative compelling.
Well written and easy to leave everything and just keep reading and reading and reading... This may be Baldacci's best yet, or it's a strong tie for second.

A Darker Baldacci

It was really hard to put this book down! It's not action, but the mental puzzling out of situations in the story. David Baldacci made the mind, and man, of Amos Decker brilliant, complex, tragic and, in some regards, enviable. This new (main) character is a little darker than his others, but every bit as human and I think, more impudent. I can't wait to read the next installment of what may be his attempt to reclaim part of his soul.
