Description

If her cruel and domineering father were to be believed, Kali Bane is the worst of women. Defiant. Independent. Were it not for her beloved younger sisters, she would have sought her freedom long ago. When she refuses to wed an old, wine-soaked English lord, her father bans her to the McKay clan in the Highlands, warning them that she’s a witch.
There is no welcome at the McKay castle—only an aging laird prone to fits of temper who believes that Kali is, in fact, a witch. A sorceress. Here she is little more than a hostage, kept from sight from almost all but Adam McKay, the laird’s son, whose hypnotic green eyes make her long for something forbidden. It’s almost enough to make her abandon all thoughts of escape.
Kali is the only one who can protect her sisters from their father’s greedy machinations. But the longer she remains imprisoned in the McKay tower, the more Kali and Adam realize there are other forces at play. They’re both pieces in a silent, terrible game that could destroy everyone they’ve ever loved…including each other.

3.5 Stars! This was a cute, quick read. It’s the first book in the ‘House of Bane’ series and can be read as a standalone. I absolutely loved Kali, the main female character. She was so kind and easy to love. Adam, the main male character, I liked MOST of the time but I was still rooting for him to get an HEA ending. Both of the characters were making demands of the other and Kali seems to have lived a tough life. Orphans, old ladies, sassy maids, sisters, possible witchcraft, best friends, forced weddings, awful Father’s and a HEA ending. I didn’t really get much romance from this book, it felt like insta-love, but it is a shorter book so I get it. All in all, it was a good book with a good, smile inducing epilogue. This was my first time reading this author but I’d definitely read more of her works.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Kali Bane is banished by her cruel father to the Highlands as payment for a long ago debt. She hopes to have escaped her wicked father’s reach, only to find that he has sent a missive ahead of her telling lies and slanders about her. The Mackay clan banishes her to a tower and forbids her to intermingle with them. But Kalie finds an unexpected friend in the Laird’s handsome son Adam Mackay. Can she deny her attraction? Will she ever be free of her father’s reach?
“She met his gaze then, her mouth suddenly dry. “If I ride with ye, we might be tempted to…” “To do this again?” He tugged her into his arms and slanted his mouth across hers. This time the kiss was urgent but tender, and she could not deny him, for her mouth opened instantly, her tongue seeking his, her sense filled with everything he had to offer - his woodsy scent, his raw power, the hint of mint on his breath, and everything else that force her to shut her eyes…” There are twists and turns that I didn’t expect, and there are a number of steamy scenes. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
