The Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros is a romantic fantasy story about a young woman with a chronic illness/disability who is thrown into a succeed or die situation in a training program for dragon riders. The book is told from her perspective as she experiences the numerous challenges and dangers of a program where cadets have to survive the various life threatening trials and defend themselves from their peers. Violet enters the program expecting to die, considered to be weak by many, but she has the strength of character to endure what others could not. Violet’s early training as a scribe has also given her the critical thinking skills to face conclusions that everything she has been taught might not be true.
Unlike some stories, which have to do some world building before the reader gets the lay of the land and an investment in the story, this book grabbed me at the very first word. There were so many twists and turns, action, suspense, emotion, and slow burn then white hot sexual chemistry. At times, I felt that the emotion the story provoked was similar to the edge of your seat feeling The Hunger Games series evoked. This is my first novel by this author, but it appears that this was her first foray into fantasy and I think she has found her calling. I cannot wait for the next installment of this series. I highly recommend this book to all readers mature enough to read the more explicit violence and spicy sections of the book. I believe that it will have universal appeal just as series such as Divergent or The Hunger Games.
