Description

Yangsze Choo’s stunning debut, The Ghost Bride, is a startlingly original novel infused with Chinese folklore, romantic intrigue, and unexpected supernatural twists.
Li Lan, the daughter of a respectable Chinese family in colonial Malaysia, hopes for a favorable marriage, but her father has lost his fortune, and she has few suitors. Instead, the wealthy Lim family urges her to become a “ghost bride” for their son, who has recently died under mysterious circumstances. Rarely practiced, a traditional ghost marriage is used to placate a restless spirit. Such a union would guarantee Li Lan a home for the rest of her days, but at what price?

Night after night, Li Lan is drawn into the shadowy parallel world of the Chinese afterlife, where she must uncover the Lim family’s darkest secrets—and the truth about her own family.
Reminiscent of Lisa See’s Peony in Love and Amy Tan’s The Bonesetter’s Daughter, The Ghost Bride is a wondrous coming-of-age story and from a remarkable new voice in fiction.

Very slow-moving until 2/3 through the book when the plot accelerated. From that point on it was riveting, and I was glad I stuck with it even though there were many times before that when I was ready to give up on it.

Great!

May I be so corny as to say "I couldn't put it down?"
My four children have never been so neglected as they were when I was making lunches and changing diapers with one hand and my nose in this book (we're recovered after that 13hours)
A fantastic weave of culture, history, romance and suspense.
I've been telling everyone and am thrilled to look for more of this author!

It's worth every penny. I loved this book. The drama, the historical fiction, the romance, everything! I wish I could read it again without knowing what happens at the end. It's just that good of a book

An ok read.

The story was cute and had a lot superstitious beliefs added to the storyline which made me pick it up. I liked the romance development and liked Li Lan's character, however I was truly disappointment a bit by the ending. There were times when the story was slow and I lost interest (but I forced myself to read on) and there were other times when I couldn't stop reading. However, although the ending was as I hoped, it was just rushed. Too rushed even. We didn't even get a final interaction between the two ending characters. The simple narration at the end was disappointing since it was so hard to keep an interest in the story in the first place.
Overall, it wasn't worth the money. Read it at a library or something, but it's not a piece of literature I would keep on the shelf to read again.

I truly enjoyed this wonderful read. I basically couldn't put this book down I was too interested to see what was happening. I felt it bog down a little bit when the heroine was in the plains of the dead, but I was very interested of the characters and characterizations. This very different story is a wonderful look at Asian life at that time. The fanciful storytelling of the young woman about to be a bride the deceased bridegroom's ghost is most unusual. I truly recommend this book. My thanks to the author also created afterword so that I knew what the culture was like, how to pronounce names, and the lore behind this type of practice. I find it all very fascinating!

This is a fascinating story. It was an excellent way of explaining many Chinese customs surrounding death, funerals, and afterlife. Brilliant imagery, poetic descriptions, and growth of the protagonist. You are able to see the growth of a young girl into a young woman. Loved it!
