Description

The Glass Castle meets A League of Their Own in Solo, a candid and moving memoir about family, loss, and reconciliation from Hope Solo, the supremely talented, headline-making goalkeeper for the U.S. women’s national soccer team.
During the 2011 Women’s World Cup, Solo became an idol, role model, and sex symbol to a new generation of young American sports enthusiasts, inspiring the kind of intense devotion not seen since the days of Mia Hamm.
An Olympic gold medalist and arguably America’s sexiest athlete, Hope has been featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated (twice), in ESPN: The Magazine, and as a contestant on the hit ABC television show Dancing with the Stars, and her poignant, compelling, and profoundly inspiring personal history will score big with her legion of fans.

Just wow.

This is one of the most inspiring books I've read. If you are really into soccer, I would suggest you read this book! I DO THINK you need to get to know how Hope is and how her other teammates act and how they look. I read the book not knowing who some of the people looked like and how they were and it was a little confusing! Make sure you can picture the faces in your mind as you read. I'm now familiar with names and faces and I'm reading the book a second time!! This is a book that won't get old!! AMAZING book overall.

Wow! Just wow!!!!

I'm not much of a reader, but find Solo very inspirational. I couldn't wait to get my hands on this book. The book is deep, truthful, and she lays it all out on the line. I respect her even more after reading about her journey through life. You can feel her hardships throughout the book, feel her happiness, and most of all her confidence that flows throughout each page. Fantastic job Hope!

So far this has been the top 1 book i've ever read on memoirs! I've been soccer fan for a long time but the USA team got my attention after the game against Brazil...mostly hope was the players that got my attention the most! I've always admire people that are themselves and are outspoken fighting for what they've earned and having no fear of letting the world know of their opinion! As I read this book I found myself going through similar things she went through...in that I found strength and a motivation to move forward & keep fighting for my dreams! Such an inspiration...she truthfully just safe my life by putting her story on paper! I can call her now my HERO! Thank you hope!

Good read

It's nice to hear from a woman's side on how sports can affect your life. I think hope does a great job in telling her story and she is a great example for many women out there that want to get, into sports or anything for that matter. She shows true guts and that is what we (woman) need more of!!

Are you kidding me?

She's only famous because she's attractive... Take away her good looks and nobody would give 2 cents about her. Please, can anyone name the rest of her teammates? What, is no one good looking enough on the team to ALSO get their own book? I really wish America would reward actual credible & talented female athletes, not just female athletes that are mediocre at their job, who "just so happen" to be sexy and have a great smile.
Lets focus less on marketing & making money and give more recognition to hard earned talent. Oh wait, I forgot... that's the exact opposite of the 21st Century American mind set. Next she'll be making a guest appearance on Jersey Shore.

Powerful

A very open and honest account of the life of hope solo. It takes a lot of guts to be this honest about a troubled past and the challenges shed been through. I'll admit I'm not the biggest soccer fan but this team caught my attention with their victory over brazil and I've followed them ever since. I think hope takes a lot of unnecessary crap for simply speaking her mind and standing up for herself. I think she is just misunderstood. Growing up the way she did of course made her tough and outspoken. She's a great athlete and I admire her very much. She will always have my support and I strongly recommend this book.

Loved the book

Have been a long time soccer fan & was rather reticent about reading this book. But read it I did & I enjoyed it.
I knew a bit about the fallout after the infamous 2007 WC incident, but after reading Hope's memoir I was appalled at her treatment by the team & that it went on for so long. I know there's 2 sides to every story, but wow. Many other people would've folded so I give tremendous credit to Hope for hanging in there. Kristine Lily, a player I have tons of respect for, acted particularly appallingly.
But I digress. Hope Solo is a fantastic athlete. Can she be polarizing? Hell yeah, but she owns up to it. She has a policy for being honest. That ruffles feathers & many are ruffled throughout the book. But at the heart of this autobiography is a woman's painful story who learns to endure & ultimately triumph over tumult & adversity.
You're a "keeper" Hope. Congratulations on the London gold medal & continued success protecting the goal for Team USA.

Solo

Well written, courageous and honest. My admiration for Hope has grown after reading her book. An avid US Womens soccer fan, I loved the behind the scenes look at the team, the good, the bad and the ugly. A great read. Thanks Hope. And to Ann Killion, we miss you in San Jose!

Solo, a Memoir of Hope

I enjoyed this autobiography tremendously and along the way gained a lot of respect for an athlete who has never learned to keep her mouth shut nor toe the party line! Hope Solo is not just a great athlete, and the best female goalkeeper in the game of soccer, she is a woman of courage and conviction.
Never politically correct, frequently controversial, she tells her story with rough honesty, and that takes a lot of guts. She makes no apologies for who she is, and I believe that she is great for women's soccer. She is strong, outspoken, blunt and honest, and all of those qualities are needed as women's sports break through the barriers of accepted female behavior into the era of female professional sports.
As she continues to make headlines and controversial comments, the book sheds light on her personality and challenges the reader to accept her as a multi-faceted person, a daughter, a sister, a friend, with strengths and weaknesses. Through her story emerges a fully rounded portrait of a strong female athlete at the top of her sport, who deserves both admiration for her accomplishments and compassion for her struggles.
Before I read her book, I had a hard time liking her, and actually debated buying the book, not sure if I wanted to give her my financial support. But I wanted to try to understand the woman behind the headlines, and the person I found is immensely likable, loyal, stubborn and a lot of fun!
I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes sports, and to all women, as well as to parents of female athletes. Great job, Hope Solo, you won me over, and I am a die-hard Brianna Scurry supporter. Hope Solo's success takes nothing away from Brianna, who saved the game and did not get enough credit for the 1999 Women's World Cup victory. But then goalkeepers rarely get the glory, I know this firsthand as the mother of a goalkeeper.
I hope this book helps to correct that for all goalkeepers. As she proved again during the 2012 London Olympics, Hope Solo is a great goalkeeper, a great athlete, and as I discovered after reading her book, a great character! Read this book, you'll enjoy her story!

Awesome memoir, and a true heroe! I love Hope!

This is an excellent memoir. Hope really was not afraid to open up to her life and talk about what she thinks it is the right thing to say. She is not afraid of what others think and while reading it, I felt that I got to "know" her better as a person (because I already knew how great of a goalkeeper she is). She is truly the BEST goalkeeper in the world, and a true heroe! Hope, you have changed women's soccer history for good!

Good book!! But..

It was a great book, probably on of the best I have ever read! So much respect for Hope, more than I thought! But the book ended on my iPhone with chapter 22 and hope spending new years with her grandma, I thought there was supposed to be stuff about 2012?
