OVER 60 WEEKS ON THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER LIST
With a new Afterword by the author

In The Power of Habit, Pulitzer Prize–winning business reporter Charles Duhigg takes us to the thrilling edge of scientific discoveries that explain why habits exist and how they can be changed. Distilling vast amounts of information into engrossing narratives that take us from the boardrooms of Procter & Gamble to sidelines of the NFL to the front lines of the civil rights movement, Duhigg presents a whole new understanding of human nature and its potential. At its core, The Power of Habit contains an exhilarating argument: The key to exercising regularly, losing weight, being more productive, and achieving success is understanding how habits work. As Duhigg shows, by harnessing this new science, we can transform our businesses, our communities, and our lives.

This Book CHANGED MY LIFE

This book truly opened my eyes to some of my greatest faults which were habits that formed without my knowing. It's showed me some of my terrible eating habits like late night snaking and how little habits like how I place my phone when I got to bed can change how I wake up and my energy level. This book can help you take control of your life and prevent mindless walking through life because of ones habits. I truest think everyone should read this book at least once.

A fascinating journey of self exploration

Other than the Steve Jobs bio, this book was truly eye opening. I'm ashamed to say that this is the second non-academic book I've read since elementary school. This was a very down-to-earth book and is awesome if applied to our life

The book is full of examples of habits, how they impact lives, and people within the scenarios have they've manage to adjust to new behaviors or change them.
In that sense the book is motivational.
It's a good read to begging highlighting some habits that may impacting a life in a negative way and figure out ways to Change and lead to others books to read for better self awareness and determine personal changes.

This book is about the study and research of habits versus practical applications for everyday life. I was hoping for insight as to how I could increase my productivity. The stories are quite long and probably more tolerable if you are reading instead of listening. The first example lasted about 40 minutes. The preview of the book was the best part.

Lots of interesting stories that exhibit behavioral patterns, but I think the author could have tied it all together much better. Also, I bought this book thinking it would be a really good learning tool on how to break my bad habits. It lacks anything useful as far as guidance. Although it was a decent read, I don't think the author provided anything better than what someone who did the same research could put together.

I am not what you call a "reader" but I randomly decided to read this book when I first got my iPad. It is a very easy read and very informational. We all have habits we are trying to overcome and even though this book cannot do the work for you, by reading it I felt/ feel more empowered and in control to change these habits. If you need to feel that control read this book!

All this time, I've felt like I was losing a step because I couldn't remember driving to work, whether I had closed the garage door and even if I had remembered to run payroll. Not only have I learned, invaluably (not a word), that I don't recall these things because they've become ingrained habits that I can perform automatically, but I've learned how to help others and myself change poor habits - and most importantly, stop them from beginning. I will be implementing what I've learned for the rest of my life.

In this genre, this is one of the most influential books I have ever read. It explains the importance, the impacts, mechanisms, and benefits of habits. How habits (and routines within companies) make us, break us, and can bring redemption, achievement and order to our worlds. Some sections were slow, but I was sorry (as I am with all excellent reads) when I reached the final page.

The research in this book and its presentation are awesome. It is so important for everyone to understand habits - good and bad. Finally a book that helps us take a scientific look at it. This was the first non-fiction text I've read in decades cover to cover in a matter of a couple days. I obsesses in it. I wanted the reward - the simple solution to fixing all my bad habits and creating new ones.
It seems that Duhigg uses the term "Habit" as any activity done unconsciously varyingly from the customary, initially conscious teeth brushing good habit or cookie eating bad habit to primal fight / freeze / flight responses and perhaps even heartbeat and breathing. Stories through the book illustrate these habits.
Well into the reading (ironically when reading chapter five in which Duhigg talks about experiments studying willpower) I succumbed to the urge to read the prologue. I wanted the "how-to", my cookie, right now. It only took reading a couple paragraphs, and I was overwhelmed by the endorphin rush I felt having accessed my reward.
I immediately reflected on the "one cookie now or two cookies later if you wait" conversation in ch. 5 that I had just read. Do I continue eating / reading this first "cookie" or go back where I'd left off in ch. 5 and continue through the remaining chapters? Certainly, Duhigg included this material for a reason. This was a challenge as I so wanted to get back to the Prologue. I finally made it and it was worth the struggle.
Perhaps it is because Duhigg is a journalist, not a psychologist / coach that the last step, that of a summary guide into action is missing. He speaks of the actions to take in describing what he did regarding a specific habit. He suggested questions to ask oneself at various stages. What was missing for me was a condensed list, an outline of action steps.

Good read, but not enough

The book is an interesting read, but the amount of information is quite small. A large part of the book is taken up with footnotes. The fundamental idea behind the book is quite simple and I'm not sure it deserves an entire book. The book is so short that it reads more like an extended term paper. After reading the extensive list of credits, my initial thought was how can so many people be involved in a project which produced such a short result that sells for such a high price.
Nevertheless, the lessons inside are interesting, and I believe that for many people it will help them examine their habits and possibly improve their lives. For me at least reading the book heightened my awareness of habits and now I find myself questioning my habits and possibly finding options for improvement. The book enables a person to see themselves in an entirely different way.
For anyone interested in neuroscience or real psychology, this book will not prove to be very useful. Everyone else probably will benefit.
The writing style is not scientific but rather crisp and chatty, so the reading is easy and pleasurable.
I am going to purchase a few extra copies to give to my friends.

It is an very interesting book and I really enjoyed reading it. It provides a lot of information about how the habits have influenced our lives. It made me more aware of my bad habits. Some of the information is very practical and useful in everyday life.
The only complain I have is that he second half is clearly not as great at the first one. Especially when it gets to the third section: habits of society. The author didn't reach the same depth of some of the phenomenons he did in the first two sections. To me, a lot of pages in the third section are repeating themselves and it seems they are just fillers.
Overall, I would definitely recommend this book.

Book is fascinating but the end of each chapter there are missing pages. Instead of the final pages of the chapter it repeats one page several times, which is annoying. You would think that if the publishers are charging $12 for a digital version of the book that they could get it right.

This is a really good book; however I am a little disappointed. I am on Chapter 6 and have found 3 replaces where they have truncated and/or duplicated a paragraphs (check out the end of the Starbucks chapter as one example).
I checked the book out from the library to follow the missing parts of the book, why buy it twice? Apple you upload a new copy out for download - the story is relevant and worth reading.

This is a nice book, which is easy to read and engaging fairly well. Particularly compelling is its first part, dissecting the mechanism of habit forming, its importance and possibility of changing it. The later part, yet, is a bit a stretch to frame other coorporational and societal phenomena by the same framework.

I completely enjoyed this book. It was filled with all kinds of examples and research, written in a very engaging and entertaining style, about how various types of habits touch our lives. Very simply, the book is about exactly what is appears to be about. It does not meander or have any extraneous information, it is an in-depth look at habits, how they form, their influence and written in an easy, likable style. And yes, there is a bit of instruction at the end of how to change your own habits, but it is not the main focus of the book.

The book does a good job of articulating why habits form and remain with us. I was curious to find out a little more about how to apply the information and that was lacking. However, it does provide good insight.
