I can usually guess the plot for most sci-fi novels, but this one really surprised me with clever plot development and a really interesting mystery to solve.

Great science fiction takes a single simple idea and asks "what if?", then spins the characters, society and plot around that idea and sees what happens. This book plays with two completely different unrelated ideas, and builds much of the story on how they interact. It's double-great..

Another great read from Jack McDevitt. If you are a fan of the Alex Benedict stories, you will enjoy this novel. It ties up many threads all the way back to A Talent for War. As to be expected in an Alex Benedict novel, an interest in a mystery transforms into a quest for answers. His backdrop he paints of a civilization ten thousand years from now is at the same time familiar and foreign. Embedded in his stories are observations into the transient nature of life and a person's life. I have enjoyed the Alex Benedict stories for many years now and I highly recommend them to my friends and family. Thanks for another great read Mr. McDevitt.
