No matter how, Wuthering Heights was superior with book medium to video/film medium. I first read this book in 1995 and watched movies. In the book, characters and sceneries are vivid, wild, and spectacular with lots of my personal imagination. At that time, I was not living in the United States of America. The land of U.S.A. in the book was untamed and wild enough. That was the beauty of this book. When I travelled lots of places in the U.S.A., only several parts of the land were less tamed (West and Southern America). Probably, books should be red throughout childhood and adolescents, rather mature adulthood.

I have to read this for school cri

I really liked Wuthering Heights. It was recommended to me by someone who knows what they are talking about when it comes to books, and they loved it. It took me a little while to get into it at first, but about halfway through the book, I really got into it. I recommend this to anyone who likes Victorian novels, and tragic love affairs.

A dark ominous book that was filled with selfish, unforgiving, vengeful, hate filled, loveless characters. I read on thinking there has got to be a hero somewhere. There has to be some hope or forgiveness in the lives of these characters. Catherine Linton Heathcliff was probably the closest to being the heroine. But still a character motivated out of sheer selfishness. This was a story that truly depicts how the lack of love, grace, or forgiveness in ones life leads to jealous murderous hatred that destroys lives. Not a book that I would recommend to anyone despite the reputation of the author as a classic literary author.

A GREAT book

It' like 7 years since i red the book, but i still compare al the books to this one. It did impress me a LOT. About human nature, betrayal, money, love, hope (your hope for a happy ending) it's all in this book.

Nothing to rave about

I have, at my age, read thousands of books. I love period pieces and often find myself using a word or phrase from old English, Irish or Scotish, much to the confusion of family. I finally decided to pick up Wuthering Heights, never having had occasion to read it but knowing it is considered a classic. Having read it, I can't for the life of me understand why!
I must say that I am quite disappointed. I always imagined it to be some great love story that ended in tragedy. It is in fact a tale of love, but a love grown out of selfishness, rebellion, abuse and great dysfunction. Had I any clue, I would have left it on the shelf and my imagination intact.

This book is captivating and a great classic. But here's the thing, I don't like the characters, Catarina and Heathcliff see, both treacherous, but one of the reasons I love it is because they both choose to ignore the others sins and faults.

This is very intriguing when you know who the author was and what scandalous writings this was in her time. I am 48 and really read this for the first time not commissioned by a school. It will haunt me for months and be thought provoking for years to come. I highly recommend ready and finish it with the PBS version for visual and sound. They nailed it !!

I don't remember reading this in School, I do know many read it that one time. Books become classics for a reason, their story is timeless, the characters come to life, and it is brilliant. This checks all those boxes.

A great novel you'd be better off not reading.
This book has no likeable characters, no EMPLOYED characters, endless and tiresome emoting by women and frail men (OK one frail man) and one character who serves no useful purpose other than as a surrogate for the reader. Another character has such a thick accent, it's impossible to inderstand what he says.
I was 70% of the way through the book before I realized Bronte could not possibly, by the end of the novel, bring me to care about the fate of any character. Every single one is despicable. I can now say that I read the novel cover to cover and, although I understand that the structure is unique and innovative, I'm not sure it was worth forcing myself through the last 30% of the book to get to the unsatisfying end.
I fully admit that the story and structure in Emily Bronte's "Wuthering Heights" is worthy it's place in the classics, but that doesn't mean you have to slog through it. Read Dickens instead.

This is a magnificent novel that pulls me in each time I pick it up. The characters are so beautifully developed as the tragic love story unravels. Emily Bronte truly proves herself to be one of the best lady authors of her time with this timeless literary masterpiece.

Antiheroism at its finest

A hauntingly beautiful story centered around complex and extremely human characters. Heathcliff is the proverbial antihero, often romanticized for his abiding love of Catherine Earnshaw, which to be fair, would be better described as obsession than love. Catherine and Heathcliff are both extremely selfish and repeatedly make wrong decisions, especially with respect to love and marriage, bringing great suffering upon themselves and others. Still, their backstory elicits compassion, and Heathcliff's enduring affection is romantic in a way, which is probably why many readers see his vengeful and selfish acts not as those of a true villain but as those of a sort of fragile, flawed, and deeply damaged hero.

Having only seen the 1937 film version, this, my first read of the novel, was a shock. Clearly it was thought the viewing public would find a film, accurate to this tragic love story, very unpopular; as testified by the film's success at the time. The novel depicts a much more rapacious Heathcliffe, and the surprise which Catherine bestows on her deathbed. The film definitely took a lightweight telling of the story, yet keeping it as the tragic love tale that it is. If you adore the 1937 film, the book may not be recommended, for it's different, darker nature.

Wuthering Heights, from the get-go, came across as a book of misunderstood love. Miss Bronte writes in accordance with her times and the separate classes and the strain this brought, especially to those in love. I would have probably quit reading because of the lack of hope, so it seemed, but her characters are so vividly and well written that I continued the story to completion. I am glad I did. What a great book. A sad one, but one that is well worth the read.

It is a dark, deep, passionate classic and should be read at various times in ones life. It means something different at 40 than it did at 19. It doesn't matter if you are reading this because as one reviewer wrote "Edward and Bella told you to".... Just read it. And read it again if it has been a while since you last did. Above all else read it to enjoy it. While it is dark, much of life is and you will find a little Heathcliff and Cathy in most people you meet.

While this book is incredibly dreary, if you're a fan of 19th century literature this is the book for you.
A story of love, hate, and malice, Wuthering Heights takes place in 1801 when a Mr. Lockwood comes to live as a tenant for the belligerent Mr. Heathcliff and is interested to know the story behind his landlords family.
A great book that I recommend to anyone with an interest in old stories.

The characters of Wuthering Heights were like a train wreck you couldn't take you eyes off - or in this case stop reading about. The inhabitants of the Heights were first introduced to us as a classic dysfunctional family. They positively exuded hate for one another and they laid all the dirt for all to see with no shame. I couldn't stop myself from flipping through the pages to find out all the juicy details, and felt a little dirty and disturbed in the process. I found it less of a love story between Heathcliff and Catherine, and more about how not to raise your children if you don't want them to grow up into a catastrophic mess.

This is such a great book. I'd enjoyed it very much. I constantly think to myself how the book would be different if Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff got married like they should have! Very great book about how love can go wrong and how missing out on love can lead to life-long regrets! A must-read if you have any appreciation for classic English literature.
