I remember reading this book when I was young…over and over again! It was a good read, however, I am not sure if this is an abridged version or not. Most of the time, I don’t care for abridged versions of books. I prefer the original. This book didn’t say if it was abridged or not, although I may have missed the notation. This is an excellant children’s book!
While reading several of the other reviews, I thought I would add the reminder that this book was written for children. It has a lot of really creative imagery and symbolism hidden inside its pages. It is, in a way, meant for children’s dreams. It is NOT logical, nor does the characters use an amount of intelligence. I think the beauty of this story lies instead in the simplicity, the creativeness, the innocence of childhood.
This is a perfect stepping-stone for growing readers. Soon, they will be ready for books like the “Dragon Keeper Chronicles” by Donita K. Paul. Those books are fantasy-allegory, and definitely worth the time to peruse several times over. But, really, the “Wizard of Oz” is best described as a masterpiece of a stepping-stone, a guide for young readers that they may realize that all things do not have to be as they seem, that they can defeat evil, and that there is always the land of dreams to explore!
