Description

An Apple Books Classic
You get not one, not two, but 25 gripping mysteries in Arthur Conan Doyle’s first of five collections of Sherlock Holmes short stories. Follow the brilliant and eccentric Holmes and his loyal sidekick, Dr. Watson, as they journey to lavish country estates to investigate baffling cases involving indiscreet royal affairs, cheetahs, redheads, and gypsies. Every one of Conan Doyle’s tales is full of surprising - but always logical - twists. (Fun fact: This book includes “The Speckled Band,” the author’s self-proclaimed favorite of all of his Sherlock Holmes short stories.)

This was a great book, I was immediately interested. There are some chapters that are a bit slower, and even though I read them, they weren’t as interesting as the others. The great thing about this collection is that if you don’t like a story, move on to the next one. I would recommend The Speckled Band as the best on in there.

Having been a fan of the movies, I was interested in reading this book. The writing was a challenge to sometimes comprehend, due to English ways of description in the 1870’s - 1890’s. However, character development was by far excellent, along with storyline. Highly recommended reading puts you in England alongside Dr. Watson and Sherlock Holmes, for many cases to solve!

There are few phrases that I think could have been better written as having been said by Holmes, but other than that, Sir Doyle has done an outstanding job at putting down detail and fact, as factual as can be, to keep an audience’s attention.
I’ve always loved Sherlock Holmes stories and mysteries.

I’m usually a slow reader, but I finished this book only in a few days, while for others it would take weeks. The interesting, splendidly woven tales of mystery really snatched all my attention, and I haven’t read any of the longer tales written by Doyle yet, but I definitely will! Really recommend it!

I've always heard how good theses stories are, but never took the time to read them. The stylistic writing of the time, the density of the story, and the persistence with which they are revealed are better than any crime novel out there. Hats off to Arthur Conan Doyle

Lots of fun in its old-fashioned way, and not dry or staid, as I thought when I first read these 20 or so years ago. In fact Doyle's writing is more descriptive and insightful, and at times wry, than I ever game him credit for.
Maybe you can see the solutions coming -- or maybe that's just my half-remembering from decades ago -- but they're still a lot of fun.
It's a good idea to have Wikipedia handy for some references that nobody knows anymore. Enriching!

Very well written and I enjoyed each chapter as if I was reading the hard copy! This suspenseful novel allowed to me stay interested in every mystery and criminal-mastermind without becoming bored or mundane. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle creates scenes of anticipation for the reader and he does an excellent job of telling a vivid story for every mystery.

Enjoy the Holmes creation by Doyle for the numerous facets of his personality, singular focus, deductions and assembly of facts to reach his conclusions. A wonderful, almost visual staging of the British culture, character and life at that time.

Stephen King wrote in On Writing: the art of writing requires just enough detail for the reader to absorb the author's point, and no more. Doyle might be one of the best examples of that art.

It is difficult to not see Cumberbatch and Freeman on every page. Doyle's straightforward and unembellished prose, so unlike that of his contemporaries, makes for easy but enjoyable reading. He leaves the fancy talk to the characters and keeps the scene description honest, without the obfuscation, interminable run-on sentences and vague literary references that plague the alleged masters of his profession.
This was a welcome antidote to my recent completion of works by Dickens and Hugo.

A fine piece of work by Sir Conan Doyle

Arthur has finally outdone himself. I am a 7 year old boy and having read all the Sherlock stories thrice, I have come to respect his tale more, and more. I love the doctors narration so much. Does anybody nkow when the next one comes out?

Fantastic stories, originally appearing in a local London periodical publication in the 1800s.
Great for long reading sessions as a group of stories or in short stints, as they are Doyle's short stories.
Highly, highly recommended reading.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is, without a doubt, the true king of mystery (Agatha Christie being the queen, of course). I am a 13 year old girl, and already, I have read the entire collection. Doyle keeps his readers enthralled, hanging on until the bitter end, with his ingenious red herrings, his seemingly complex and insoluble mysteries, and, of course, the Great Detective himself. Sherlock Holmes is truly at his best here, whether he be waiting to ambush a gold thief, or simply smoking his pipe by the fire, "spinning fine theories," in the words of DI Lestrade. With it's charming characters and perplexing puzzles, "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes will whisk you away to a time of gas lamps and fog and hansoms clip-clopping down cobbled streets. And you will love every second of it.

Sherlock Holmes must be of the best books of all time. I hope that one day my children read this. I never got really into the paperback version that we have at our house, but the combination of his fantastic stories and the technology, and fun of the iPad, made for an amazing read. READ SHERLOCK HOLMES!
