Description

From the New York Times bestselling author Kristin Hannah comes a powerful novel of love, loss, and the magic of friendship. . . . now a #1 Netflix series!
In the turbulent summer of 1974, Kate Mularkey has accepted her place at the bottom of the eighth-grade social food chain. Then, to her amazement, the "coolest girl in the world" moves in across the street and wants to be her friend. Tully Hart seems to have it all---beauty, brains, ambition. On the surface they are as opposite as two people can be: Kate, doomed to be forever uncool, with a loving family who mortifies her at every turn. Tully, steeped in glamour and mystery, but with a secret that is destroying her. They make a pact to be best friends forever; by summer's end they've become TullyandKate. Inseparable.
So begins Kristin Hannah's magnificent new novel. Spanning more than three decades and playing out across the ever-changing face of the Pacific Northwest, Firefly Lane is the poignant, powerful story of two women and the friendship that becomes the bulkhead of their lives.
From the beginning, Tully is desperate to prove her worth to the world. Abandoned by her mother at an early age, she longs to be loved unconditionally. In the glittering, big-hair era of the eighties, she looks to men to fill the void in her soul. But in the buttoned-down nineties, it is television news that captivates her. She will follow her own blind ambition to New York and around the globe, finding fame and success . . . and loneliness.
Kate knows early on that her life will be nothing special. Throughout college, she pretends to be driven by a need for success, but all she really wants is to fall in love and have children and live an ordinary life. In her own quiet way, Kate is as driven as Tully. What she doesn't know is how being a wife and mother will change her . . . how she'll lose sight of who she once was, and what she once wanted. And how much she'll envy her famous best friend. . . .
For thirty years, Tully and Kate buoy each other through life, weathering the storms of friendship---jealousy, anger, hurt, resentment. They think they've survived it all until a single act of betrayal tears them apart . . . and puts their courage and friendship to the ultimate test.
Firefly Lane is for anyone who ever drank Boone's Farm apple wine while listening to Abba or Fleetwood Mac. More than a coming-of-age novel, it's the story of a generation of women who were both blessed and cursed by choices. It's about promises and secrets and betrayals. And ultimately, about the one person who really, truly knows you---and knows what has the power to hurt you . . . and heal you. Firefly Lane is a story you'll never forget . . . one you'll want to pass on to your best friend.

The story ended with an important message for all women, but the journey was predictable and lacking as compared to Kristin’s Nightingale.

I loved this book to itty bitty pieces. I instantly attached myself to a specific character and felt envy, grief, the feeling of falling in love, hope, etc. I felt abandoned by this ending, and I guess that’s how you know it’s a good book.

Amazing story!

Great book. I could relate to the friendship between two best friends and their escapades. I have a best friend from 1975 and even though we live thousands of miles from each other, we pick up our conversations with each other as if we spoke yesterday. We will be BBF.

I love Kristen Hannah’s writing. This book was so touching and real. It will be a favorite of mine always.

200 pages too long

Way too wordy and drawn out. Would have been more impactful if about 200 pages shorter. Also, the story line felt like a Beaches copycat. Two best friends - one ego centric, unbalanced upbringing, stardom focused; the other goody-two shoes. Lifelong friends through good and bad, then the good one gets cancer and dies. The other must make sure the daughter remembers everything.

I read this book when it first came out and wrote a scathing review then. Thought I would give it another shot since the Netflix series wasn’t half bad. I actually boycotted Kristen Hannah after reading this painful book because it was so full of terrible editing errors and blatant factual errors and now I remember why. How this author became a bestseller is beyond me. The premise is good but someone else should do the writing. The dialogue is so jerky it’s impossible to believe. This is not writing, it’s a series of sentences that try to make a story. No flow, no well written exchanges and certainly unbelievable characters. I could not finish it the second time around and have lost faith in today’s readers’ discernment. If this is good popular fiction then our standards are so impossibly low it’s obvious that the 280 character social media post has killed decent writing. Such a disappointment that this is the bar others aspire to. Waste of time and money, even if the only goal is to find out how the television series ends. Awful then, awful now.

AMAZING!

I’ve never read a mediocre Hannah book. She writes for your soul. Her stories will haunt you for days as you typically ache for her characters. I read this one in 2 days. It always sounds cliche to say “I just couldn’t put it down,” but it is always true with Kristen’s books. Once you read the full book, move on to the Netflix movie. It’s different, but still happy, sad, and haunting. Thank you, Kristen, for your lovely stories.

I finished this book within days. Kristin Hannah’s writing is mesmerizing. She will bring you into a whirlwind of emotions, making you cling to every page. It will pull on your heart strings. The story is such a good one. Two best friends, forever. I’m currently on the sequel, “Fly Away” which is also hard to put down. Usually I find sequels to never be as interesting as the original, but it’s almost as if the first book never ended. Highly recommend!!!

I loved this book! While I didn't grow up in the 70s, I do live in the PNW so it was fun to be familiar with what the author was talking about. This was such a good story about the ups and downs of a lasting friendship and the importance of family. You learn to love Katie so much throughout the book and I only wish that we got some more closure with Tully. The book's ending had me sobbing which I enjoy in a story.

Excellent, engrossing start to finish.

Read this book. I’ve read several of Kristin Hannah’s books & this is my favorite. I finished it in 2 days, staying up late, waking early & neglecting chores/responsibilities/etc to steal a few minute to read. You will not be disappointed. I cried, laughed, reflected heavily on my own life and was truly sad when the book was over. It will stay with me for a long time and I’m sure I will read it again many times.

I’ve never heard of Kristin Hannah before picking up this book, and living a stone’s throw from Snohomish, it came as a welcome surprise. What I didn’t expect was a book I couldn’t detach myself from, reading until 2:30 in the morning before I fell asleep with it on my chest. I finished it it 3 days. Bearing intimate witness to Tully and Kate’s enduring friendship left me in tears of both laughter and sweet sorrow. I‘m a discerning and critical reader, but can’t give this any less than 5 stars for its authenticity, nuance, and richness, both in character and plot. This is a MUST read.

I just discovered this author when I read The Great Alone this week. Well, I read this and that in the same week and couldn’t put either down. She is my new favorite author. There is something about her ability to connect you to the characters. She makes you feel like you know and love them. Each time I finish her book I miss reading it. I want to read them again! I’m going to look for more from her.

The similarities between this book and the book/movie Beaches are almost comical. It is an exact copy with the exception of Tully’s career choice being a news broadcaster vs a broadway star. I still enjoyed the story and the authors writing style, but seriously does she have no shame in stealing Beaches????
