Description

Winner of the Hugo and Nebula Awards
In order to develop a secure defense against a hostile alien race's next attack, government agencies breed child geniuses and train them as soldiers. A brilliant young boy, Andrew "Ender" Wiggin lives with his kind but distant parents, his sadistic brother Peter, and the person he loves more than anyone else, his sister Valentine. Peter and Valentine were candidates for the soldier-training program but didn't make the cut—young Ender is the Wiggin drafted to the orbiting Battle School for rigorous military training.
Ender's skills make him a leader in school and respected in the Battle Room, where children play at mock battles in zero gravity. Yet growing up in an artificial community of young soldiers Ender suffers greatly from isolation, rivalry from his peers, pressure from the adult teachers, and an unsettling fear of the alien invaders. His psychological battles include loneliness, fear that he is becoming like the cruel brother he remembers, and fanning the flames of devotion to his beloved sister.
Is Ender the general Earth needs? But Ender is not the only result of the genetic experiments. The war with the Buggers has been raging for a hundred years, and the quest for the perfect general has been underway for almost as long. Ender's two older siblings are every bit as unusual as he is, but in very different ways. Between the three of them lie the abilities to remake a world. If, that is, the world survives. Ender's Game is the winner of the 1985 Nebula Award for Best Novel and the 1986 Hugo Award for Best Novel.

Outstanding Book

The book was kind of slow starting off which in the beginning made me reluctant to read it. There were also many complex parts that required rereading and back tracking to previous texts to understand what was going on. So if you're into a basic/simple book this isn't for you. However, if you do like an interesting read and a wonderful story this book is perfect. It had me at the edge of my seat numerous times. I was so impressed with this book I couldn't put it down. It constantly had me feeling sad, happy, angry, excited, nervous, and generally all over the place. I love this book and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a good read.

FANTASTIC

This book is definitely one of my favorites. It is filled with plenty of mind games and plot twists so definitely consider this one if you like active/entertaining books. Although it may seem long.... It is absolutely worth it (this is coming from someone who hates reading)

Still my favorite..

I read this book when I was 11 years old, after having purchased it based solely on the back cover from a Scholastic book fair. It rapidly became my favorite book of all time, and I recently gave my daughter a copy of it to read. she made it halfway through the book the first night. She is 14 and enthralled with the book as I was.
First Warning: DO NOT WATCH THE MOVIE BEFORE READING THE BOOK. While the movie is excellent based on its own, in comparison to the book it can't hold a candle. There is way too much inside Ender's mind that a movie cannot recreate, although it made a fair attempt. Also, the storyline is slightly different (minor side story items anyway).
Second Warning: IF YOU KNOW A SMALL CHILD WHO IS SUPREMELY SMART, YOU WILL NOT LOOK AT THEM THE SAME. Nothing quite like watching a small child in a book DESTROY his enemies with good reason when they are larger than him. This is something the movie never quite captures... You have to remember that when Ender is winning, and ends up winning a war, he is 12.... His first victories start showing at 6..
I love this book. I have the iBooks copy, two paperback copies, and am seriously contemplating purchasing the audio book as I LOVE this story.
From 11 to my current age of 36, I have read the entire series numerous times, but the book that started it all is the best. Always will be.

The BEST book I've EVER Read

I've been interested in sci-fi for a long time, and was drawn to this book. I have read this book approximately ten times and counting. The story is compelling, leaving you shocked, and pleased at every turn. This is a book that is so great that it will leave you sad when the book is at a close. I cried when Ender cried, laughed when Ender laughed, and was thoroughly intrigued and interested by this wonderful book. This book touches you deep, in the best possible way. I was literally sitting there, in language arts, crying at a part of this book. The book absorbs you so much that you don't notice that little smirk you get every time something goes right, or the grin you get when Ender is happy. This book, in a way, changed my life. The plot line is like anything else out there. This is a must read. *Side note~ I am a seventh grader providing this review. I first got in to this series in the fifth grade*
The movie adaptation is a must see too! Asa Butterfield brings life to the complex book character!

A Well Told Tale

I enjoyed Ender's Game. I've been reading science fiction since I was 10 and have read pretty well all the classics and then some for 50 years. This is right up there with some of better alien invasion stories. That being said, it's a very human story that concentrates on child psychology, brilliant children specifically, and their relationships with the adult world. Ender is a heroic figure as one would expect, and a genius. I loved the little twist at the end. Also, the paperback edition that I read has the first chapter of the next book in the series- Ender's Shadow.

Amazing

Ender's Game is one of my favorite books. Orson Scott Card has written a fantastic story mainly surrounding two separate stories: the story of Ender working up the ranks in battle school and a story on Earth focusing on his siblings, Valentine and Peter. It's a book that's nearly impossible to put down and really delves into the character of Ender, who's incredibly complex and compelling. The only thing that I have a gripe with this book for is the final chapter. I understand that this book wasn't originally supposed to be made and was only made as a prequel to Speaker for the Dead, but the final chapter seems so rushed compared to the rest of the book, and the characters act so differently than they had otherwise that it almost feels like the author originally wrote the book as a separate adventure and added in the characters like Ender and Valentine late into development. While the final chapter is rushed, the overall book is extremely enjoyable, and Speaker for the Dead is fortunately nothing like the final chapter of this book. 9.5/10, would book again.

Far too long - slow pace

I can't believe all these 5 and 4 stars reviews. The story is far too slow long and repetitive. It makes you want to skip pages and get to the point.
This book is lacking pace. I lost interest and had to force myself to finish it.
Worth 3 stars in my eyes (average).

Ender's Game

At the time that I read this book, I was reading it solely for a literature circle activity in my Language Arts class. As I got deeper into the book, it became too interesting to stop reading and I spent long nights reading this book. As I followed Ender through his journey from a recipient of Peter's torture to being a speaker for the dead, it made me realize that we had shared qualities. This was definitely a great book that made me see new things about myself that I never saw before.

Ender's Game

This is by far the best book. It has so much action in it. I just love Sci-Fi and action books. By far the best one. Can't put it down. I have already read the book five times and on my sixth. Plus the movie is the best ever. It has so much action in it and Sci-Fi in it to. Andrew is the best character ever, all the characters are awesome. Nothing can beat it. Best ending too. Ecspecially where he finds out it wasn't a simulation it was real. Also the end where he finds the aliens where there base is. His dreams lead him there, because he killed the whole planet of aliens in the simulator but it was real. It looked like they tried to make peace, but he still went on with attack. He would have done differently if he knew it was real, because it looked like they tried to make peace. He then blew up there whole planet, because he thought it was fake simulation again it was real. The aliens looked like they were trying to make peace.so he went out to look for a alien where his dreams lead him. He found a alien, and wants rescue them.

A Simply Good Read

When you read some of the harsher reviews, you will see repetitively that many people whom are fans of Harry Potter, Hunger Games, etc... Do not appreciate the Enders Game. However, I personally have read many, many science fictions, as well as fantasies. I absolutely love this book and am already starting the second. I would also like to point out that even if you are not a usual science fiction reader, this book may be an exception. I honestly hope you give this marvelous book a try, especially the teens and young adults. Please, also, read it with an open mind. You can interpret many meanings from a one-of-a-kind, best seller like this. You rarely ever find good books like this in modern day...Enjoy!

A great science fiction books out there

Enders Game is a book that has just enough mystery and action to keep you reading for hours. Ender Wiggens journey across the universe seams like it you were there yourself the way Mr. Card has made it seam. From Peter and Valentine to help and harm Ender he can be quite a merciful human. You won't regret it for a minute

Absolutely tremendous

I’ve read this book multiple times, and can’t remember a charaxter that undergoes more of a transformation than Ender Wiggin does. It relates the issues that three genious children go through, the main character’s character development, his pains, triumphs, sadnesses, isolation and single-mindedness. Ender proves repeatedly that he is stronger than everyone else-no one, including his teachers disputse it-and ending plot twist is a gem. Other than Hubbard’s Battlefield Earth, a milestone in Science Fiction writing. Follow it up with the Hive Queen and the Hegemon and you have two books you can’t put down. Well done, Card!

Ender's Game

This book is compelling, thought-provoking, and a compelling read. Themes range from war and peace, defining humanity, breaking accepted barriers, rising above ageism...love and hate. All this, and you never "feel" it. The story is so well crafted that the messages are simply there if you choose to ponder them. (and you will!) I highly recommend this book, not just to sci-fi/fantasy readers, but to everyone.

Best Book Ever

I read this book when I was nine. I'm fourteen now, and my two favorite books are Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow. I've read every book in the series, both the Shadow books, the Ender books, and the short stories, and I am patiently waiting for Shadows Alive, the final book, that is yet to be come out. It's a fantastic book: every time I read it, it's better than before. I highly recommend it.
When you're done with the series, the Pathfinder Trilogy (the final book still yet to be released), also by Card, is also wonderful.

Great

Very good story. I do not read very often as I usually get bored midway through a novel. This was a great story that kept me hooked until the end, which in turn, was a great ending. I foresaw the climax of the story, but it nonetheless was great to read. The writing is easy to follow and paints a vivid picture of the games, as if I was there playing it. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in a good story.

Vastly Overrated

People are calling this book the “pinnacle” of the genre!?!?! Please!
This book is okay. I read it in a few days without having to force myself to finish it. That’s saying something on its behalf. But the story is needlessly weighed down by totally implausible elements and needless contrivances. The fawning praise that it gets leaves me shaking my head in incredulity.
Spoilers follow so don’t read any further if you haven’t read the book yet

Epic battles in defense of humanity’s future would not be entrusted to children. Period. I don’t care how brilliant they are supposed to be. The story would have been better if Ender and his commanders would have been, at minimum, in their early twenties. Nothing in the overall story would have suffered if this had been the case and it would have been much more plausible.
The battle school training should not have taken up so much of the book and it should have been more than just laser tag in zero gravity.
The entire “Demosthenes and Locke” piece was both implausible and a needless contrivance. Card could have deleted that entire element of the story and the book would not have suffered. It would have been better to just give a background narrative of political developments on Earth without a couple children taking over the world through internet posts.
Having Ender actually fight the real battles but to lie to him and tell him he is just directing more simulated battles opens the story up for more implausibility and, in the process, prevents what could have been some really interesting character development from taking place. It would have been much more interesting to see Ender’s character evolve if he had known he was actually directing the real battles. Having Ender overcome his tendency toward compassion in order to have the resolve to do what needed to be done to wipe out the buggers would have been better than having him lay around thinking he is playing games.
The final battle is almost laughable. Rackham sets Ender and the other children up to make a run at the alien home world and hopes that they will drop the planet wrecking device but plants a reason to maybe not do it in Ender’s mind first
before he runs off into another room to watch!?!?! It’s probably good that this part came near the end or I would have set the book down at that point never to pick it up again.
The whole element where the giant in the game turns into a mountain and then Ender finds the same mountain on an alien home world is just weird. It filled way too many pages while adding nothing of any real value to the story. Okay, so the aliens got into Ender’s mind somehow. Big deal.
Again, the book was okay. It reads pretty well. But it could have been much better with a lot of what is in it left out, some of the core elements of what is in it changed in a few ways, and maybe more of an emphasis on more exciting things like the desperation of people who know they are in battle and less of kids playing laser tag in zero gravity or taking over the world through internet posts.

does not compute

Many things about this story are just not believable. The whole premise of this tale is that humankind must destroy the alien home world but we can’t send an adult pilot because adults have a moral compass and would be unable to commit genocide. So we have to train a child to fly this mission. Only a child will be able to push the button since he or she would have no sense of morality, no sense of right and wrong. That is such nonsense. And let’s talk about those chapters featuring two intellectual giants who wrote competing op-ed pieces in the global newspapers. They were very similar to Hobbes and Locke but they just had petty disagreements all the time. There was nothing substantive in their arguments. The idea that they were world famous and highly regarded but totally anonymous is quite hard to believe. This was just the author indulging in a bit of self-indulgent fantasy. There was a great deal of violence. I think this was intended to show that extreme violence makes you a better person, or something. Ender overcame the bullying by killing his attacker with his bare hands, and now he is ready to push the button when fighting the aliens.

Highly overrated

I'd heard so much about this book that I expected more. At best, it was somewhat predictable; at worst, rather creepy and offensive. I wouldn't recommend it—and certainly not for young adults. Too much about the philosophy and underlying attitudes in this book are disturbing—and I don't mean in an artistically thoughtful way. You can do better when it comes to something to read.

Ender's Game

A great idea, a poorly written book. Although the plots zips along, the details of Ender's world are poorly described. It's a novel for those who prefer video games to fiction and film. Action counts more than narrative or character. Let's put it this way...if you liked Harry Potter, the Foundation trilogy, Hunger Games, or Battlestar Galactica, you'll loathe Ender's Game, or at least think it's a snore.

My expectations were too high

After reading reviews and talking with friends I set myself up to be blown away by every chapter. This of course is not realistic and set me up for disappointment out of the gate. My recommendation is ignore the hype and read the book expecting a great story which will leave you satisfied in the end. No earth shattering, life changing moments here, just a really good read.

100 Words or Less

This is supposedly a Sci-Fi Classic, and Card almost made the grade. Is it good? Absolutely. And sometimes surprising. Yet, the plot seems repetitive and the main character doesn’t evolve much. So does it belong with the greats of that genre? Hmmm. I don’t think so. Oh, I still highly recommend it, but only because it sets up a much greater book, its sequel “Speaker for the Dead”. Combine these 2 together, and then you do have a true classic, a truly great unfolding of a unique character.

What's the hype about?

There is a lot of hype about this book which is what led me to read it. It started off slow and semi boring. By the middle of the book I was almost, almost engrossed. The ending was totally predictable and rather boring in my opinion. It was not action packed by any means and hardly enticed my imagination. I have read better. I wish I could get a refund.

Delightful

Card writes with the wisdom of an old man and the heart of a child. His understanding of humanity and all of its tendencies are portrayed through his stories of Ender his encounters. Ender's Game is full of surprises, childlike silliness, and thought-provoking hypotheticals. I recommend this book to anyone interested in science fiction. I just finished the book. It was amazing. The character development was superb, and you couldn't help but to become Ender Wiggin. Amazing read! Must have for any Sci-fi fan!

First time reader of Mr. Card, but I must say he did not disappoint. For a novel written nearly a decade before the rise of the internet and interactive gaming, Card gets it perfect.
With touching relationships with family and school-mates, Ender represents the individuals that feel singled out in grade schools around the world. His intelligence boggles the mind even today where most of his actions are in use in militaries around the globe.
I highly recommend Ender's Game to any reader. It brings out the humanity in all of us. That longing for self preservation that the human race clings to more than anything else.

Great Read!!

If you like syfy you will love this book. Could not put it down. I could see a tv series or movie being made maybe some sort of trilogy. Starting from the first invasion to the third invasion. You will not be disappointed, buy it!

Amazing

I have loved this book since the first time I peeled back it's cover when I was in high school. Compelling story from start to finish, well written, and relatable characters. I recommend this book to anybody looking for a scifi universe to plunge into.

Buggers!!!

The concepts in this literary prelude are at once fantastic and horrid! Calling forth the stability of human existence on a backdrop fear, prestige, philanthropic dischord, and a way of life so demanding/enveloping you only wish you could be a bystander.

A must read

Though set in the future, Card transcends sci-fi with a story that is as much a study in leadership as it is a tale of a young man pushed to his limits.

One of the best book ever

It's one of my favorite book. Lots of depth in the characters, amazing story. I read it more than 5 times already. There are other books following the life of Ender. Good also but this one is the first one, must read! Enjoy!!
