Description

Who are you? When you start to explore this question, you find out how elusive it really is. Are you a physical body? A collection of experiences and memories? A partner to relationships? Each time you consider these aspects of yourself, you realize that there is much more to you than any of these can define. The Untethered Soul, spiritual teacher Michael Singer explores the question of who we are and arrives at the conclusion that our identity is to be found in our consciousness, the fact of our ability to observe ourselves, and the world around us. By tapping into traditions of meditation and mindfulness, Singer shows how the development of consciousness can enable us all to dwell in the present moment and let go of painful thoughts and memories that keep us from achieving happiness and self-realization.
This book, copublished with the Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS), offers a frank and friendly discussion of consciousness and how we can develop it. In part one, he examines the notion of self and the inner dialogue we all live with. Part two examines the experience of energy as it flows through us and works to show readers how to open their hearts to the energy of experience that permeates their lives. Ways to overcome tendencies to close down to the rest of the world are the subject of part three. Enlightenment, the embrace of universal consciousness, is the subject of part four. And finally, in part five, Singer returns to daily life and the pursuit of unconditional happiness. Throughout, the book maintains a light and engaging tone, free from heavy dogma and prescriptive religious references. The easy exercises that figure in each chapter help readers experience the ideas that Singer presents.

I just completed reading this amazing book and I will return to page one to start again. I had a stunning glimpse of THE truth and I want to see it again. But the real benefit is the encouragement I feel to go within...all the truth and love is in me...as I tap these keys...it is in here, behind my fingers. Michael has made it clear!

I have been interested in and studying this subject for about 10 years now and to be honest I have never come across a book quite like this. THIS IS A MUST READ FOR ANYONE OUT THERE TRYING TO GAIN A NEW PERSPECTIVE ON THEIR LIFE!!! From my experience I know just how many books there are out there promising this or promising that but I am here to tell you THIS IS THE ONE!!! Michael Singer has written this book in such a way that anyone out there whether they are a beginner or more of an expert can understand the concepts proposed by him and gain a greater understanding of how we as humans react to pain and trauma by closing ourselves off to the world and how we can actually be FREE from that and LIVE A LIFE OF COMPLETE FREEDOM AND UNCONDITIONAL HAPPINESS!!! A MUST READ!!!!

Best book!!! I've read it 3 times!!!

I appreciated the author's viewpoints on staying in the moment and how to disconnect yourself from your body to experience what is around you, but I thought at times the book was very repetitive and redundant. I think he could have communicated his point with a few bullet points and examples or just the first few chapters of the book.

Great book! Easy reading and beautifully and simply written. The principals are basic but ones we need to remember and have reinforced often to keep us on the path to conscious living. Bravo!

I have read many books over the years about what I can only describe as what appears to be an emerging consensus about the nature of consciousness. Eckhart Tolle was perhaps the first to bring to a wide audience that there are essentially two distinct forces within us competing for our attention--one, the ground of all consciousness, the infinite knowing that is at the root of our being, and the other the "mind" or intellect that Descartes identified as, "I think therefore I am." The emerging consensus on this is that Descartes was not only wrong, but was fundamentally wrong. The mind is simply a computer: the part of our knowing that organizes the world in a way that makes sense to us--the accumulation of all the data and experiences and the world view that emerges from that.
But behind this is the "knower" or "observer." It is the part of us that is transcendent of "me" and capable of simply watching the mind and all of its machinations. And this is what Michael Singer so brilliantly and clearly shows in practice--how this interplay works and how destructive it is for us to become slaves to the computer in our heads that is constantly chattering and clamoring for our attention as it tries to exert control over the outside world--a hopelessly futile enterprise. Singer takes the reader through very clear exposition of how insane the life is that so many of us lead as the insane mind tries to desperately bring the world under control in order to render some rational meaning to what is essentially a Universe with its own designs, purposes and direction of which we are simply a small, and magnificent art. This is very Buddhist/Taoist sense of the World, and Singer has made the utter simplicity and beauty of this abundantly clear in this book. It is, quite simply a masterpiece--I have read it many times, and have referred to it often as a corrective when I have let my mind create another of its little insanities. And I know I will come back to it many more times for at wisdom and insight is transcendent. Jus read the accolades at the beginning from Chopra to Gorbachev to get s a small taste of its brilliance...

Great book!
