A favorite of mine since it was published
I was reading Heyer in my teens, in the mid-60’s. I read my mother’s copies, then obtained my own.
The sequence starting with The Black Moth, and ending with An Infamous Army, set against the Battle of Waterloo, are my favorites.
Set mostly in France before the beginning of the active path towards the French Revolution (perhaps during the reign of Louis XV), we have a comedy of errors concerning a lovely ninnyhammer and her ambitious mother, a sensible sister cast in the shade of her beautiful sibling, a care-for-naught rake and his family, and a suitor to one of that family, all varying degrees of gentility and nobility.
Amusing and alarming by turns, a classic to enjoy many times over.
