Description

Five months ago, Valerie Leftman's boyfriend, Nick, opened fire on their school cafeteria. Shot trying to stop him, Valerie inadvertently saved the life of a classmate, but was implicated in the shootings because of the list she helped create. A list of people and things she and Nick hated. The list he used to pick his targets.
Now, after a summer of seclusion, Val is forced to confront her guilt as she returns to school to complete her senior year. Haunted by the memory of the boyfriend she still loves and navigating rocky relationships with her family, former friends and the girl whose life she saved, Val must come to grips with the tragedy that took place and her role in it, in order to make amends and move on with her life.

I have paper book

I already bought the book, but it's really good. It's a legit book and I feel so bad for Val. Her mother, Stacy, everyone doesn't understand, but at least the doctor has some compassion for her.

Beautifully heartbreaking.

As soon as I read the description to this book I knew I had to read it. After so many books about school shootings, we find one focusing on the story of one girl who was thrown into an ordeal she never could have prepared herself for.
The journey the author takes us on is astounding. I cried hardest during the scenes where i truly felt the loneliness Valerie endured- when her best friend, classmates and even her parents blamed her for something she never meant to occur.
In the end, one thing stands out to me most: love, unconditionally. Love without faltering. Take nothing for granted.
This is a wonderful book I will always cherish. If you're in doubt, go for it. You won't be disappointed.

What YA fiction should be

I put this book down to eat, go to the bathroom, and sleep. Otherwise, I had to read. It's not a novel of suspense, the story just flows so well, and the characters' emotions as written are heartbreaking.

Perfect.

I knew the book was gonna be good when I read the summary, but it turned out to be better. I was hooked after the first page and couldn't stop. The plot is something very original and I loved it. The way Valerie unfolds is interesting to follow along with. There's nothing wrong with this book. I'm not even done with the book yet when I'm writing this review. Highly recommended for people looking for a life- changing book to read.

Exceptional

Hate List does a wonderful job exploring the complex emotions we all have about things, events and people. Valerie is an interesting and complex character. You love her, you hate her, you cry with her. As Jennifer Brown says, it was never a book about a school shooting. It's a book about human emotion, something we can all relate to.

Really inspiring 👍

This book was really touching and really allowed you to see deeper into the characters. In this book I didn't decide that I "like" this character and "dont like" that character. It allowed you to see the perspective of all the characters and see they were just another person. It was a really good book! I highly recommend it!

Will stay with you

Valerie's story about the school year after her boyfriend went on a mass shooting tells how she is filled self loathing and guilt while surrounded by kids who think they know Valerie was part of the shooting spree. Her growth and emergence from self imposed isolation makes for a very interesting read.

Important material for all ages

This book takes on the common emotion that is swept under the rug and smothers you--HATE. Then it sweeps you up to the reality that will free you--FORGIVENESS.
Jennifer Brown is able to open windows that everyone needs to see and breathe through. She helps you see the 'normal venting' that takes place on a daily basis but has its inherent dangers if it is used in the wrong places (wrong 'friend', social media, etc.).
Great book.

Excellent!

As a high school teacher, I found that this book sounded as though it was written by a seventeen year old. By that I mean that it did not sound like an adult trying to sound like a teenager, but it rang true as the language and thoughts that a teen would use and have. It was both devastatingly sad and hopeful at the same time. It presented teens who are bullied and those who do the bullying and show that both have a back story. Very insightful and real.
