What does everyone in the modern world need to know?
Renowned psychologist Jordan B. Peterson's answer to this most difficult of questions uniquely combines the hard-won truths of ancient tradition with the stunning revelations of cutting-edge scientific research.
Humorous, surprising and informative, Dr. Peterson tells us why skateboarding boys and girls must be left alone, what terrible fate awaits those who criticize too easily, and why you should always pet a cat when you meet one on the street.
What does the nervous system of the lowly lobster have to tell us about standing up straight (with our shoulders back) and about success in life? Why did ancient Egyptians worship the capacity to pay careful attention as the highest of gods? What dreadful paths do people tread when they become resentful, arrogant and vengeful?
Dr. Peterson journeys broadly, discussing discipline, freedom, adventure and responsibility, distilling the world's wisdom into 12 practical and profound rules for life. 12 Rules for Life shatters the modern commonplaces of science, faith and human nature, while transforming and ennobling the mind and spirit of its readers.

There aren’t even enough words to express the beneficial factors this book illustrates. I will be reading this book to the day i die for it gives no excuses when i fall back on negative outlooks, their is always a way out and for better reason. It takes a lot to know this knowledge and not be better, for not being better would insight a neglect of consciousness. Reading this a second time will only solidify and expand the understanding of its material. The thrill of its revealing ability to concepts of common relatability is unmatched. I will be chewing on this for a very long time.

It’s worth the time and effort. So darn interesting. At times it was a little heady for this mere mortal, but push on because it all becomes clear by the time the chapter is done: The author is amazingly honest and he offers such good advice. He doesn’t try to please everyone; he speaks his truth with passion gleamed from hard experience. No matter if you agree or disagree with him, his points of view, and the instructions for a better more meaningful life, can’t/shouldn’t be ignored. Read it.

Jordan Peterson is a conservative intellectual- his voice and perspective must be heard. Not a conservative myself- I found the book interesting. The book is essentially advice for life to young people; something much deeper than what your High School teacher told you but with a conservative twist. Of course, as a conservative he seeks to establish rules and structures for people to follow- that makes sense from the conservative point of view. Some of his ideas seem little outdated/strange to me- chaos being feminine and order and culture masculine.

An incredible book that can be applied no matter who you are and where you are. Dr. Peterson is blunt and to the point; he doesn’t beat around the bush. This book broke down many toxic ideologies I had and helped me establish better ones. A must read if you’re open and willing to grow.

This is a thoughtprovoking and truth-revealing read. Dr. Peterson is able to formulate thoughts in a manner that makes them understandable and digestable, while not letting you off easy either. Some of the things talked about are those things you already know, consciously or subcosciously, and finally are able to read them and make sense of them, as he himself acknowledges at the end: “I hope [this book] revealed things you knew that you did not know you knew.”
I had multiple occations reading 12 Rules For Life where I had to laugh to myself at the brilliance of Peterson’s ability to communicate thougthts and concepts I had previously tried to make sense of myself, and now finally read them, black on white, as clear as day.
This book introduced me to new things as well. One of those is the Russian novelist and thinker Dostoevsky, as well as others, who Peterson discusses at some length, and with profound admiration. I will pick up my first Dostoevsky because of Peterson and this very book.
Thank You for encouraging me to seek truth, to not lie, to stand strongly and take responsibilty for my life. Thank You also for inspiring me to read more.

I really enjoyed this book and all of its factually based theories on behavior, however I found myself struggling and page flipping past most of the heavy biblical references mid-way into the book. I am not religious myself but I’m capable of listening and appreciating the words of those who are; it just became a little too saturated for my attention. If you’re open minded and mature enough to filter the biblical aspects then this is a wonderful read.

This book gives you an alternative perspective, a plan and hope. I enjoyed this book for many reasons, all of which gave me hope and a new ideology. If you enjoy personal development and growth within yourself and your relationships this book can certainly offer someone new. Jordan said it best it best in his book “listen ( or read in this case ) as if the other person knows something you don’t, because chances are they do know something you don’t “. I hope everyone enjoys this book as much as I did.

As a counselor, a lot of the concepts that he teaches in this book are old news. I found myself bored listening to him explain concepts ad nauseam. The amount of Christianity in the book is annoying, as it is used as the basis for many of his concepts. I couldn’t connect to this. I grew resentful as the book went on, wondering why I invested so much time into a lackluster book. I don’t need to be reminded how much suffering is in the world over and over again. Would not recommend.

I will say that this has been a refreshing book to read. Dr. Peterson is definitely a genius and it shows in this book. An educated man who is always learning and never willing to come to a place that he will not learn anything else is a rarity in academia. This desire for truth instead of ideology shows and is what I really enjoyed even when it crossed my own ideas.

Some of the rules in this book may be basic virtues we already sort of know (such as standing up straight and telling the truth) but the book's value lies in its explanations as to why these things are valuable. If you lack the fundamental understanding behind certain virtues, it becomes very easy to slip up.
My life has absolutely improved since reading this book. I'm still nowhere near perfect, as I still sometimes still fall victim to my own laziness and malevolence, but at a less frequent rate than before.
I think almost anyone will be able to find some value in this book.

Defies the globalist progressive nutless man view

Dr. Peterson makes the case eloquently and in plain speak of how we as a society have left all those things that made man successfully evolve to be better in every way and have embraced an existence of pussified mediocrity led by women and denial of basic human needs. Jordan lays out a blueprint with set clearly thought out principles with very reasonable and well thought it justification as to why we are failing as a society, who is responsible to fix it (men), and how to change ourselves to bring our world back from the disaster known as progressivism. Disgusting communist progressive liberal democrats are a plague on our world and must be purged either by jailing, ostracizing them to a meager poverty stricken existence, death, destruction or breeding them out of existence then making all their beliefs to include Islam illegal with the immediate penalty of death. What I just said is preposterous! This is what Peterson warns against because he cautions against overcorrecting (my words) too far too the right as dictators have done many times before! Get this book and also Maps of Meaning for intellectual thought provoking information as well! 12 Rules is fantastic and really has changed my life by pulling me back to embrace what I am, what I need to be, and what I had forgotten due to society breaking down our previous societal norms. Great book! Buy one for yourself and one for all your family members, make and female alike!

This book is a love-hate kind of read. You will love the parts that apply to you personally and protect your values. You may hate the rest.
On the surface, this book is compelling, and easy, in the moment, to agree with the author’s views. Unfortunately as the story unfolds, in trying to accommodate everyone, he ends up creating an argument of why the world should protect people that share his demographic profile and values.
While I appreciate his attempts to change my world-view, after spending a few weeks away, I now believe that the author was in a very dark state when he created this book. Yes, darkness must exist to give light meaning, but more darkness doesn’t necessarily create more light. Theorizing out of fear tends to appeal to those who wish to return to (or keep) the status quo, not those who want to change or overcome it.
Feel free to read, just be prepared to love and hate it, regardless of your current status.

Wow, excellent book!

Thought provoking book that turns a lot of conventional thinking upside down. Doesn’t necessarily mean I agree with everything in here, but I must admit was very engaged reading through the book.
Several of his rules revolved around Christian teaching. Peterson’s writings reflect a psychological analysis behind these rules which is incredibly fascinating to read how Christian teachings reflect in society.
Expect to have your thinking challenged, and gain a deeper understanding of human interactions!

Why is this controversial?

Dr. Peterson is a phenomenal communicator with immense credibility from decades as a clinical psychologist. Nothing he says is outrageous or even radical. He essentially empowers the individual with advice and confidence born from common sense. Certain “journalists” who have tried to misrepresent Peterson as some kind of right-wing, callous monster are the real villains of this story. I highly recommend reading, watching, or listening for yourself and making your own judgements.

How to Embrace Your Inner Pre-Reptilian, Darwinian Tao

 –
Didus Solitarius

2018-06-30
As insightful and readable as this book is, both whimsical and well-developed it nevertheless makes two great metaphysical assumptions which are not sufficiently explored: first, that the “yin and yang” philosophy or religion of Taoism is true, second, that it is the fundamental “rule” which governs all of biology and evolution. To his credit the author makes many interesting correlations between that philosophy and various naturalistic observations, but like all extreme naturalism and religion it ends at the fundamental assumptions about reality that it makes which are not explicitly examined on a philosophical level. The result is a kind of naturalistic spiritism, a guru imparting his self-help wisdom, rather than a detached academic survey of research and data, though much data is integrated into the belief system itself.
Overall it is an enjoyable and thought-provoking read, but the dictum of Hume lingers ever in the background, never explicitly addressed as a counter-argument, namely that it is logically improper and inconsistent to derive an “ought” from “is.”

Objective truth returns

Coach Yates

The only knock I have on this book is that the title is a gross oversimplification that leads certain skeptics to the delusional conclusion that this is some sort of self-help book. These rules are laid out with evidence from evolutionary biology, psychological research, and a deep grasp of history and literature. Each rule connects to a primordial part of our nature that humanity rejects in an attempt to create its own value structure. Dr. Peterson makes the Jungian case that humans can't create their own values, instead we must look inside ourselves for an understanding of Being. He relies on the great myths of Christianity, Buddhism, Taoism, as an explanation for truths that are not subjective to human experience because they are bound to a deeper level of our psyche.
Objective truths bind a society on a deeper level than subjective opinion. Dr. Peterson gives simple rules that can objectively apply to people in all circumstances. That is a breath of fresh air.
