Favorite NES Title with Important Upgrades

I loved the original Dragon Warrior game on the NES! This game is a basic port to iOS and I've loved every minute playing the game again! IMPORTANT: Increased gold and XP earnings which makes the game less tedious!

Awesome!

I played every Final Fantasy out there and I needed a series i could start from scratch. I have Dragon Warrior in the 80s but didn't beat and hardly remember it. This game is awesome. I'm writing this after just finishing DQ 3. Give the series a chance, it tells and awesome trilogy story!!

Finally Beat It!!!

I started playing this game back In the 80's. I never beat it. I tried again in the 90โ€™s again did not complete it. Being able to play it on my ipad is an amazing journey. I love the smooth controls on the touch pad. The sound track is memorable. The "Quick Save" option is definitely an added bonus. The graphic looks insane on the IOS device. What else can I say. This game has been around for 30+yrs. Thank you Apple/iTunes because (I Finally Beat It)....

Still love it, and kids love it!

This was my favorite game as a kid and was adapted beautifully for mobile. My kids love the series now and asked me to write this review with two suggestions (for the series in general). Please consider adding a visual customization for the hero and please consider bringing a version of dragon quest builder to mobile. Thanks for a great experience!

Reliving a classic and a trip down memory lane

The first RPG I ever sat down to play back when it released on the NES. Great game and now my 7 year old son is hooked as I was 30 years ago!

Not what I expected

The game itself is good. I don't like that I have to hold my phone straight up and down. Wish it would turn so that I can hold my phone like a controller. Every other game in the world plays horizontally just don't understand.

Great Old Game

Faithfully reproduces the classic RPG: Dragon Quest (or Dragon Warrior for those of us here in America who discovered the game on NES). This version is similar to the GameBoy version. They did add a "quick save" function that is amazing, especially for mobile devices. All the monsters seem to be there along with all the items, including that cursed belt. The quick save function does make you less cautious because you can always just reload if you run into a scorpion before you learn Sizz (or Blaze), but the save function is definitely needed for mobile gaming. Amazing addition to any lover of classic RPGs!

Dragon Warrior

Loved this game growing up cause I got it with my subscription to Nintendo Power.
The only reason it's not getting five stars and my only complaint about the app, the game audio (even if it is all muted) wants to be in charge of the audio. So I can't listen to podcasts or music and play because the menus stop responding to taps unless I exit the game and re-enter ... which will mute my music or podcast.
This makes me not want to play or buy subsequent games in the series. Fix this and I'll continue playing and buy the rest.

Excellent port

This was one of my favorite NES games as a kid and this port is great. Easy to play one handed on the touch screen. A few enemy names are odd but other than that everything is spot on. A great pick up, going to try 2&3

Classic

My first RPG, still entertaining.
Before I downloaded it I wonder how well the controls would work without a controller, it's just fine.
I just wish they hadn't decided to rename the spells and some of the monsters, feels weird looking at a wyvern and it being called a chimera. Also casting Zoom instead of return.
But realistically the changes are just superficial, the game play is the same, story is the same. Nice trip down memory lane.

Fun game - Don't use a guide!

I was surprised to find I enjoyed this game, b/c of its reputation for being grindy, and my memory of the NES version being tedious due to having to return to the starting castle for saving and having to go into the menu to do everything that modern RPGs now accomplish with an "action" button. Fortunately the iOS version does away with all that tedious stuff (as other past remakes have).
I chose not to play with a guide, which definitely helped make it feel more fun. B/c of the game's simplicity, you have 0 worry about missable things or optional sidequests. I got a sense of discovery exploring, and the battles that happened along the way sufficiently leveled me for the most part. I probably spent 30-40 min cumulative time on actual level grinding over my 11 hour playthrough and reached lvl 24, most of which was just at the start and end of the game. I actually feel I could've beaten it with less end-grinding, probably at level 22 or even 20.
While the story is not deep and your mission is pretty straightforward, there still is a sense of connected-ness and community among the towns, and meaningfulness in your goal.
The iOS port seems very faithful to the original, although some dungeon layouts are changed. Honestly unless you remember the originals by rote, you probably wouldn't notice as the new layouts don't make things any easier or harder. The redone graphics and music especially are nice, and I even liked the "thou dost" dialog style.
Having a Quick Save feature makes this game work as a mobile game. Saving/restoring is fast and can be done anywhere, which is great if you want to do a little grinding while you're idle in real life waiting around somewhere.
If you're curious about the original Dragon Warrior/Dragon Quest, this is the version you want. The changes only improve the game.
Played on iOS 10.2 on iPhone 7. No crashes or problems at all.

Fun playing through this classic on iOS!

My first Dragon Quest game was VIII but when I saw the iOS adapt d version for $.99, I had to give it a try. For what it is and it's price, it's a great game to play for historical fun. Obviously, don't expect to much since this is a direct port of an old, NES/Famicom classic from the 80s but it's still fun regardless.
I decided to write a nee review today because I'm also glad to see that SE is taking the time to keep their older iOS library up to date so that their software can work for iOS 10 and beyond. Of course, I launched my old save just to be sure everything is working properly. After a few minutes of game play, everything sounds and looks great!
Thanks SE for releasing awesome games from your past. Now, what's it going to take to get a re-release of Rad Racer? ;)

Incredible...

This is such an incredible port of this game and it runs and controls extremely well. This is coming from someone that prefers traditional controls over touch controls.

Player of original on Nintendo in the 90's

My favorite rpg of all time. Game is almost the same as original. One thing that is different is that you level up much faster then the Nintendo version. Kept true to the original

This game is great if you like dragon quest already youlll be able to see how the series got its start. If you're new to the series this game is simple and very short compared to the later games but really has that charm that older games had. All theyved updated is a few interfaces and the graphics have been updated while still keeping the style the original had. For how cheap this is don't even think about it. Just buy it.

Great, grind-y RPG on your phone.

I spend a lot of time on a crowded subway, and this game is pretty much exactly what I'm looking for. The gameplay is repetitive, and the story is simple, but it's perfect for keeping my mind occupied and satisfies the need for a classic JRPG experience on the go. Being especially formatted for vertical, one handed play even wins this a few points over the many Final Fantasy games now available.
I don't know if it would hold your attention very long if you were looking for something meaty - but to kill some time, it's perfect.

My First JRPG Game Complete. Worth it!

I've been intimidated by JRPG's for many years due to most games being very long to complete and extremely difficult. However, I heard Dragon Quest was a great game for anyone who wants to get into JRPG so I gave this game a shot.
I have to say... I loved it! The game is simplistic with its premise and gameplay. The story is simple. You play as a warrior who must bring back the King's daughter and defeat the Dragon Lord. The turn-base battle gameplay is easy and it's rewarding. You only focus and control one warrior. There is no team or recruiting people in this game.
I beat the game within 8-9 hours and reached to Lv20 with my character. There were grinding evolve throughout the game but it didn't bother me at all. The grinding becomes part of the experience and it's very rewarding. If you die in this game, you'll lose half of your hard earn gold. So play safe. You must be very careful where you venture out in the land which motivates you to defeat lower-level enemies in order to proceed to the next section of the land which helms difficult enemies.
Controls took me about 10 min to get use to. No complaints.
Knowing where to go was a bit challenging especially since the text are written in Shakespearean English. However, it's pretty easy where you need to go and venture out. Remember... Explore!
I love the music in this game. It's well composed and memorable.
By the way, fighting the final boss was quite intense for me! Due to an unexpected twist that happens. A great boss battle!
To conclude, anyone who has never played a JRPG game before should really check this game out. Don't feel intimidated to try to beat this game. Yes, it isn't easy but not too hard to complete.
I'm working on completing DQ2 and eventually DQ3. On the road to complete other JRPG's eventually. Looking at you Chrono Triggers.

Great Polished version of the old classic, 100% worth the money. The first is one of the best dragon quest games in my opinion, as it gives you a lot more freedom in terms of figuring out what to do next, making you feel like a true adventurer.

Great game, only problem

Great game just like the good old days. Would be better if it worked with outside music playing, especially considering the fact the game is heavy on grinding. It would no doubt be 5 stars for me if this was fixed. Note music will play if you hit play on headphones but the game freezes after defeating an enemy.

A nice update to an original RPG

You do not need to be a hard core RPG runner to enjoy this game anymore. I beat this in one sitting while sick. The dungeons have changed mildly from the original Dragon Warrior. The battle system, bugs, glitches, graphics, and memory manipulation are updated for an improved run. The update for iOS makes for longer speed running sessions. The issue if you want to speed run this game will be 2 places needed for grinding.

Classic Awesome

This is a port of the feature phone remake of the GBC remake of my first RPG on the NES I ever played. So, it has all of the map changes and shop changes present in the GBC version. But it is still a classic RPG with great controls and visuals. My only wish is that it would have the same iCloud save feature like DQIV and DQVIII.

Overall, a very loving reboot of the RPG Classic

Fantastic reboot of the classic RPG.
This ranks up there as one of my favorite video games of all time - playing the original on NES helped me learn to read as a kid. My dad and I spent countless hours leveling up and trying to solve the game's puzzles and quests.
As an old-school DQ fan, I loved this version. Nice, revised graphics, Middle English text (like the NES v), and Koichi Sugiyama's excellent, familiar score. It definitely seems like this version was designed for fans of the original. I'm not sure how it would feel approaching it freshly, having not played the NES version. It's definitely the game that launched an amazing video RPG franchise, and is in many ways an early template for what would follow. I think it's best appreciated when taken that way.
I appreciated how true this version was to the original NES version, however, I felt there were a few downsides in the translation: the monster names were sort of weird and different (what is a Prestidigitator? That's the new name for the creature that used to be called just "Magician"). That was my only major qualm.
At times, some of the dialogue seemed a little overwrought and long-winded. But it's apparent that the translation team had some fun with this - the game has a good sense of humor. ๐Ÿ˜Š
4.5 stars. Thank you, SquareEnix, for this mobile update of such a wonderful game.

FANTASY INCARNATE!!!

Several months back I set out on a quest to purchase and conquer all the Final Fantasy games on the App Store then write a review for each, and that's exactly what I did. Needless to say it was one of the most exciting and fulfilling gaming experiences I've ever had in my 26 years of life. In the interim they finally added FF9 to the mix, and though I still have yet to embark on that journey, (mostly due to the software limitations of my current device) I plan to do so very soon.
That being said I decided to take a short break from the FF series to pursue other great video games, none of which brought me the viscerally nostalgic and heart-pounding joy that Final Fantasy has (Crashlands and Don't Starve to be the only exceptions). That's when I remembered seeing the Dragon Quest series all those times I went perusing through the vast library of Square Enix games, so I decided to pull the trigger, and I gotta say...WOW!!!
Last week I purchased 1-5 all at once and tonight I finally beat the first. While some would argue that the game probably hasn't aged well in it's 30 year lifespan due to the very simplistic combat and extremely short story line (5-10 hours), I would have to argue that pound for pound, it's even better than the first FF! The simplistic one-on-one battles give a real sense of intimacy and excitement, and given the fact that all the encounters are in first person as opposed to third person like with Final Fantasy really adds to said excitement. And while there are certain aspects I've found to have aged a little less gracefully than others like the limited inventory, the entire package is an absolute masterpiece (and I'm really digging the old English text as well)
All in all, even though the DQ franchise never got the exposure and recognition in America it truly deserved, no doubt mostly due to the fact it got steam rolled by Final Fantasy, it has been a major hit and gaming staple in Japan for the last 30 years and still remains so to this day, and I'm proud to say that I've officially jumped on that band wagon!!!!! Next stop, Dragon Quest 2โ€ผ๏ธโ€ผ๏ธ

.5 out of 5 stars

This is one of my favorite games from my childhood. That's why I'm upset about this. I paid money to play and after I saved and exited the app everything was fine. Good old classic

Aside from the way they did the speech of the characters good game. Quick save is awesome almost makes it unfair. Excellent Port of a Classic

I played this game with my grandfathers help when I was a kid, and revisiting it was a great rush of nostalgia. That being said this game has not aged well. Having one on one battles in a classic jrpg loses it's flare fast. Even the boss fights become trivial if you are the appropriate level and use a little logic. Still I loved revisiting this game and feel that my money was well spent.

Finally completed

Having been a long-time Final Fantasy fan and overall Squaresoft need I was pretty aware of Dragon Quest (or Dragon Warrior as they had branded it in USA at the time). At one point into the SNES era, I had bought the NES version of this game but it didn't behave well, lol. I gave up. Fast forward almost two decades... and after seeing Square commit to porting all the Dragon Quest games to iOS I too have committed to playing them all.
Number 1 here was a dream on my 6 Plus. Plenty of room for the joystick and plenty of room to enjoy the gorgeous pixels. I generally will play this game and other old school JRPGs with headphones. I haven't looked too much into this title yet but based on the closing credits I suspect the original music has been remastered, and it was amazing. The story and gameplay are pretty straightforward for this entry and the menu allows you to save the game quickly anywhere. It's not an overly long title but you'll probably grind out a few times. Perfect for mobile.
On to the next one.

Excellent tho simple jRPG

If you want to play one of the grand-daddies of all modern RPGs, this would be it. Overall a great game, tho simple by today's standards. The fact you can play one handed and quick save anywhere in game means you can pick it up an play for five minutes or five hours.
Please don't mistake simple for easy tho...there are some challenges and definitely some grinding to be done. But for $2.99 and no micro-transaction garbage, it's worth the price.

Holy crap YES!

Best port of a classic game that I've ever played. The people crying on here are stupid and have no idea what they're doing. I have never had a problem with creatures casting sleep... Oh wait, that's because I'm either strong enough to take it or I cast fizzle... What a concept. Plus, they added the ability to do quick saves in addition to the traditional saves with the king. Plus, once you get to Cantlin, there's a bank for your gold and items.
Either I don't remember the game or they made grinding super easy. Within hours I was already to Rimuldar. The "bosses" give way more than they did in the NES version, like the golem outside Cantlin have 2500 exp.
Seriously, this game sticks to its roots with some great updates.

Pretty true to the OG NES version

I got the original NES Dragon Warrior with a subscription to Nintendo Power Magazine in, like, 87? 88 maybe? I played the h-e-l-l out of it, it might have been the first game I ever beat on my own.
This port is about 80% spot on. The graphics are actually twice as good as the OG. The plot and game play are more or less the same too. I will warn that either the enemies are weaker, the hero is much stronger, or I'm just better at 8 bit gaming than I was when I was 10-11yo.
The only complaint I had was that; in the original when you left a dungeon all the treasure chests recharged, in this version, once open they're permanently emptied. But hey, that's a small thing.
Over all I enjoyed this thoroughly. If you're an old school Dragon Warrior fan, I'm sure you will too!

Pretty cool port

Huge Dragon Quest fan. Graphics look great.
Compared to the GBC version, I was happy about a few things and not so happy about some others.
Walking - walking speed seems to be a little faster which is good.
Maps - A few of the maps were changed which seemed a little needless and really didn't add to the experience. Not terrible though. Just expect to be a little lost on the final castle if you're a return player.
Controls - Not bad once you get used to them. I wasn't all that excited about the omission of the 'search under foot' option which has been replaced with shining tiles where items can be found with the action button. It feels a little spoon-fed and takes away from the game. In the original, you had to speak to NPCs to get hints about the location of items that were hidden. Now you can just see them outright.
Music - They orchestrated the music. Not sure how I feel about that. I likes the old chiptune sounds.
Quicksave - Definitely a convenience and you don't have to use it if you want a a more classic experience.
Overall it was a nice experience and worth the $2.99. I still like Dragon Quest III (Dragon Warrior III on GBC) better, although I'm skeptical about the omissions made to the iOS version.
This one is technically the RPG that started it all and it's worth a play through.

Music stops playing and freezes after battle

This game is so fun! A great classic that made it to the iOS and I really appreciate that. But my phone is also my source of music and radio, and every time you open the game it stops your music. You can start it again by using your headphones to hit play, but when you finish a battle and it says victory t freezes when it should tell you how much Eco and gold you get. It would be really nice to have that fixed cause playing games and listening to music goes hand in hand. Especially no adays when everyone walks around with their jams playing.
Thanks again for the great game with barely any bugs! Still timeless and fun.

Worth playing

I actually have played this game once before on gameboy color in the combination gameboy DW1 and DW2 game cartridge (that's what it was called back in the day anyway). Now comparing it to that version this one is WAY better. The best part of this game is that u don't need an Internet connection and cell service on to play and save just fine or even one of them for that matter. So what are u waiting for? If u are an old school rpg fan or are curious about them go ahead and buy this.

Absolute classic

As someone who spent hours upon hours playing the original classic on the NES, I find this port of the game to be an incredible remake. I'm loving the updated graphics, the Olde English dialogues and the full orchestral soundtrack. The most unbelievable part is that this game was $50 originally and has been lovingly revamped and improved upon for $3. If you're a fan of the original, don't miss this one!

Only for Retro fans

As a 3$ purchase, the game's worth the money. The port is very well done. There are just some minor annoyances with the touch screen to walk and talk but you'll get used to it.
However, this game shows its age. It was made in 1986, and although the visuals are Snes quality, the gameplay is rather archaic. There is only 1 save point in the whole game, to which you will have to constantly return (and won't be easy to return until mid game). Most of the game's length is due to grinding, which is extremely repetetive, even for jrpg standards. However, your stats increase a lot each time you level up, and you learn useful soells by leveling up, so there's some incentive. Expect a 10 hour game, even by using a guide. Not reccomended for people who dont enjoy jrpgs, or games that require patience and repetitive grinding. I didnt enjoy it as much, but it is a polished port noneteless.

Very similar to Dragon Warrior

Of course it's not exactly the same as the U.S. Version but pretty close. Didn't have any hiccups upon quick saving or using the phones home button to tab out of the game and come back later to where I left off. The only downside to this game is that the monster xp and gold drops are scaled too high removing a lot of the fun grinding time. Ex. Gold Golems dropping 650g

Perfect nostalgia, revamped soundtrack

I'm thoroughly impressed. Not only did Square Enix revive the franchise in a fantastic port, but they've redone my favorite theme music (the overworked theme). The controls are great for a touch interface, I'm actually surprised at how well they work on my phone. It has some problems, but none are all that noticeable that dragon quest veterans will still enjoy the game.

Classic Dragon Quest

To love this game, you have to
Love to level grind. If you do not, then this game isn't for you. Some other reviews are being way too harsh on this game, and they think they're getting something completely different. This is a classic NES style RPG : Grknd, buy better equipment, level up, kill dragon, save princess. The beauty is in the simplicity.

Dragon mess

Let me start off by saying I'm not that big into RPG's at all, because I usually can never find the ones I want. But I saw that this series was a really good one, so I thought I'd try it. And let me tell you it was about 3 times worse than I expected! The graphics in the game were preety good for an NES game, and SOME of the music was good, but some of it felt out of place, it sounded like an actual orchestra, instead of chip tune. The story was really simple. Just go and save the princess. The world map seemed really big at first, but as you went along, you realized that you were gigantic, and the world was small, and filled with monsters... Monsters that reminds me, there were monsters every five steps you took! It was absolutely crazy! And the biggest complaint of all though, was the fact that there was only one person to fight with. This might just be me, but in an RPG I think there should be multiple characters, to make it feel more strategic as a team instead of just worrying whether I should attack, or flee
So overall
Gameplay 4/10
Music 5/10
Graphics 6/10
Length 4/10
Overall 5/10

Amazing!!!

This really hits the spot for me. I grew up playing these Dragon Quest/Warrior games for gameboy and I was shocked to see it in the App Store. After buying this game, I spent hours playing it and couldn't be happier. It's not the same as playing it on your Gameboy Color, but they really did a good job developing it to for the iOS 8. It hasn't crashed on me and everything is saved with just a quick load. I can't wait to download the 2nd dragon quest once they update it for iOS 8.

The JRPG

As far as I'm concerned, this is the one that started them all. Short and simplistic by today's standards, this will bring back great memories for children of the 80's and 90's who grew up playing this game. Those who didn't may grow bored, especially casual gamers, but if you want to experience the genre's roots, then this upgraded port is an absolute steal for 5 bucks.

Buggy and unresponsive

I wish apple let you return games within say an hour of buying them. Dragon Warrior was the first rpg I played as a kid - I loved it. But unlike the NES version, this game crashes constantly and the controls are TERRIBLE. Moving around the map without accidentally entering a town or walking into a wall shouldn't be part of the challenge of playing this game.
When the game crashes, it loads from an autosave - how fun to get to repurchase everything I clumsily bought from the shop!!!
The final major problem I have with this game is the screen orientation - WHY would they make a game originally played on tube tvs with the classic 4:3 ratio vertical only in the ipad port? It feels and looks like a different game and ruins the last traces of nostalgia I had.
If you're looking to get this expecting a trip down memory lane, don't bother.

What a Classic!!

Having only played FF games like this in the past - sorry for the comparison - I can say it was a welcome change on what I was expecting this game to be upon looking at it.
The story is great. It has everything you'd expect but it still feels awesome to walk off into the sunset carrying the princess after battling dragons and monsters galore.
The graphics are wonderfully 8-bit, the music; likewise. Everything sounded great and always ushered a feeling of the greatest nostalgia.
The controls are what's to be expected for an iOS rpg game. The plus is you can move the joystick to either side of the screen to easily play this game with one hand. If you're into that sort of thing.
Another great feature... You can auto save anywhere. And pick up right from that last auto save. Grinding experience for an hour to get that next spell and all of a sudden you get destroyed by a green dragon you weren't expecting? Oh good thing you auto save after every fight! Haha. Options there... Why not?
Last but not least the price and very low storage cost of this game makes it and overall steal. I bought and beat it just to know that I've played a Bonafide classic of it's genre. Games aren't made like this anymore ladies. I recommend this with 5 stars!!!

Graphics...

The music? Great. Translation? Not bad. The gameplay? Classic.
But come on guys. You're known for better graphics than this. The battle graphics are fine so far, but the over world graphics are stretched and skewed on my iPhone 5 screen, and not in a good way. It looks like the SNES / ใ‚นใƒ•ใ‚กใƒŸgraphics were just ripped and stretched. For a series I've adored for its art style, I have to say I'm frustrated at how shoddily one of the most classic NES titles in the series was reproduced graphically.

Excellent edition

Having grown up with the NES version, I jumped at the chance for a mobile edition!
The transfer is fantastic, and little has changed since the NES cartridge. With the DQ 1 & 2 game boy adv cartridge, the localization was changed to fit the smaller screen. Erdrick is now Erdrick; back from Loto. Much of the faux "old English" has returned as well!
Of the changes they're minor: the names of enemies has been altered to fit the now lighthearted nature of the series: magician is now prestidigitator, axe knight is now knight abhorrent, et cetera. Another change was making the EXP drop from the metal slimes 750, down from 1250. Again, all minor changes.
The visuals tend to appear blocky, better than the old 8 bit sprites, but could have been really cleaned up, at least for the iPhone- haven't tried it on the iPad, however.
The music was upgraded from the old midi chip tune to an amazing "orchestral" edition of each track. This was definitely an upgrade for the port.
The game can clock in at 8-12hours depending on grinding for EXP. Everything came back to memory after 15 years, so it felt like it was a lot shorter. For $2.99, I couldn't pass it up.
If SQUARE ENIX price points DQ 2 and 3 in the same vein (not necessarily the same cost, but perhaps close), those two games would be definite purchase as well!

Great Game, One of my New Favorites

My Brother bought Dragon Quest 9 a few years ago, and he never let me play it. I never got a chance to Play a Dragon Quest game until now. This game was cheap, and I thought it was a good buy. It gives you so much freedom, and it Lets you decide where to go. YOU Have to figure it out, YOU have to find what's next. I plan to get the other Dragon quest games on the App Store later. Overall, this game is a good buy.

A great way to play Dragon Quest.

This is a great port of Dragon Quest that updates a few bits of the classic game. New graphics and music are reverent to the original, the vertical orientation and suspend capabilities make it a great game to play every now and then.
The only thing I would have wanted to make me like this more, would be an option for the classic NES music or art. That or a translation that cleaned up the dialogue from the "ye olde" English the game originally had and still contains.
The $3 price point is awesome for this as well. Dragon Quest isn't the longest game, but I found it to be totally worth my three bucks to play this game again.

Brilliantly done! The port is of the original NES(US) version which is great. Huge fan of the original and GBC update. It was sweet to be able to play with the original text again. Strangely Addictive

I have only played Dragon Quest VIII before this, and I like this game for the same reason: it's simplicity. There is something extremely pleasant about simply battling monsters, getting gold, leveling up, and buying better equipment all so you can train yourself to slay a dragon. This game is just simply fun.
The controls are a bit clunky at times, but you get used to them. The graphics are pretty good compared to the original graphics, but I felt that Squeenix could've done a better job updating them. Perhaps adding Toriyama sprites would've been a nice touch, too.
Overall, I would say get this game to pass the time.

It's DQ

It is good to see the old DQ make it to the iOS as I played the DQ8 port and hoped it would have SE port more.
The game does have issues though (for the iPad 3 at least) where the left side of the screen does not go black and you see your "desktop" for some reason, and this is distracting.
You are not allowed to rotate the screen the other vertical direction, which i prefer since the speaker is on the top at this point.
Also the control pad is in an unusual spot, after DQ8, I figured they would have had the setup a little more like that one.
The game is not like the old NES/Famicom and has been updated a bit, but all the fun and music are still there. The price of 3 bucks is a good deal, considering this is SE and they overcharge for all their ports, that being said I would have paid around 5 for it. Hopefully we will see more in the series!

Nostalgia to the Max

Enjoyed playing this game again, took me personally back to my childhood and creating your own maps on looseleaf. If you have ever played this series prior or are currently an RPG fan, I recommend this particular entry in the series because it explains where the entire genre came from and set the bar moving forward.
Faithful rendition with very few changes from the original. Basically all that changed from my 20+ years ago memory are a few names of the monsters. The graphics are better than the original NES version. 5 stars because not only was the price right, but the game was way ahead of its time. Love it!

Erdrick again?? What?!

This game was on NES as Dragon Warrior (Dragon Quest in Japan on Famicom). Okay, so they remade it on SNES in Japan only. Many years later, the SNES remake is ported to Game Boy Color. They bring it to the states as Dragon Warrior I + II... with a more accurate English translation. For example... the hero in Japan was Loto, not Erdrick... etc. Dragon Warrior 1 + 2 and 3 was known as the Loto saga, and all 3 GBA titles in the Loto saga have the new better translation. So... here we are in 2014 with what appears to be a GBC port, with the Dragon Quest name now... understandable, they have called it Dragon Quest since DQVIII. But... with the most horrible English translation!!! I mean, it is really really horrible!! They match the names to the NES version, which we already established was a poor translation to start with. And the text is so hard to understand! It is really cool to see these come out for iOS... but please... retranslate this in an update... it is horrible. RIP Loto.

Fantastic

This is kind of the mother of all jrpgs. It is extremely short - you could literally beat it in one sitting if you have 5-10 hours of free time. The music and graphics are very nice, as is the incredible translation. Absolutely recommended for those looking to play something short and simple, or a classic old school rpg. For three dollars I'd say it's worth it.

Retro Classic

This updated version of the NES/Famicom classic sports enhanced graphics and sound, along with a revised translation, and yet it keeps all the charm of the original. I highly recommend it.
However, save often! There seems to be a bug that causes the app to crash every 5-15 minutes or so. As long as you remember to hit quick save often, it's only a minor inconvenience.

Wonderfully Nostalgic!

I've always been a huge fan of the Dragon Warrior games. This version of the original is great, because the graphic style is much better than any of the previous releases. The medieval style dialogue is wonderful as well. Even the touch controls are decent. Aside from an occasional crashing glitch, this is a fantastic game! I eagerly awaiting the other two games in the Erdrick series!

Classic game restores beautifully

Loves this game growing up. It was my first rpg. I like how they have made nods to some of the original translations (erdrick) yet kept some of the new/proper (sizz not "hurt").
I also love that they used the orchestrated soundtrack. This game will always have a soft spot in my heart, even though the game itself is not anything spectacular by today's standards. I can't wait for 2 & 3!!!

I'm so happy this exists!!

I can't even count the days spent playing the original NES version of this game. This is one of my all time favorites, and my introduction to the genre of RPG videogames. Square-Enix knocked this one out of the park. The controls are super intuitive and the quick save feature is a major plus. I believe it also autosaves after each battle (which is great if you experience a crash and haven't saved in a while). I can't recommend this game enough- if you haven't played it, you owe it to yourself to do so. And if you have, well, it's a world worth revisiting.

I'm not sure how great this game is for those who never played the NES version, but for me, who hasn't played this game in over 20 years, this is an amazing trip down memory lane. It's spot on from the original, with some nice quality of life improvements. No hand holding or forced cut scenes to advance the story. Enjoyable

This is yet another game in the Dragon Quest Series coming out on ios devices. This game is quite simple(I expected this since it is the first game in the series) but still very enjoyable. I found that the controls are fine to me but I would love it if Square Enix made the horizontal controls an option. I also would love it if you came out with Dragon Quest 9 for ios since that is my favorite in the series. Fantastic Port of (Very) Old School Game

The graphic update leaves a bit to be desired, but everything you loved about the NES RPG is here. Random battle grinding is still the name of the game, but you'd be amazed how speeding up the loading times makes them much less of a chore. Quick Save and Map features are life savers. The price is right for what becomes a much more satisfying time waster than Angry Birds or Jetpack Joyride. My subway rides have flown by the past few days.

Another A+ classic that many of us grew up with!!

Dragon Warrโ€ฆ err sorryโ€ฆ Dragon Quest 8, 4 and now 1. I'm really looking forward to 2 and particularly 3 - in Dragon Quest 3, you could fully customize your party at any time & I really liked the backstory of Rotโ€ฆ oh sorryโ€ฆ Erdrick's lineage.
Anyway, even though DQ1 was very simple (i.e. the battles were 1-on-1, and the dungeons were insanely simple to figure out), I still think it's a timeless classic that set much of the foundation for the RPG's that were released later, as well as today's! Lastly, for all of $2.99 without any In-App Purchases, you can't go wrong!!

An excellent rerelease of the JRPG great

Dragon Quest, unlike Final Fantasy, took a well developed core of gameplay and iterated on it with each new release. While FF strove for greater technical feats and innovative gameplay additions, with just as many hits as misses, DQ delivers the same strong gameplay. Consistency is the name of the game with DQ and that they have always delivered. It's a true shame that Square-Enix doesn't see the west fit enough for more timely releases of the DQ series. They would rather reboot old franchises like Tomb Raider and complain when it sells over 4 millions copies.

A Classic, Finally Properly Ported

For those of us who grew up on the NES, Dragon Warrior was one of those games that both frustrated and enchanted gamers of a certain generation. With its simplistic graphics and charming 8-bit music, the original Dragon Warrior (Dragon Quest, in Japan) helped to set the standard for how console JRPGs would be designed for decades to come.
It is difficult to overstate the impact that the Dragon Quest series has had on the JRPG market, and the gaming industry, in general. Through ten main entries in the series, several spinoff series, and numerous ports and remakes, the Dragon Quest name is recognized on an international scale for its dedication to preserving the core elements that define the series (e.g. - turn-based combat, fantasy elements, and, of course, dragons), while constantly refining and updating the games to incorporate new elements that ensure something fresh for each new entry.
While Dragon Quest I is the shortest of the games, it is most certainly a classic that deserves playing.

Great Classic Game! Terrible Performance!

This is the classic Dragon Quest / Dragon Warrior in great form. It's using a new translation that seems to be greatly inspired by the old US NES version instead of the newer Gameboy edition. Unfortunately, it runs terribly on my iPad Air. This edition runs at what looks like 15 frames per second with quite a bit of nasty judder and dips below 10fps.
Best translation and best graphics, combined with the worst moment to moment gameplay experience. Not recommended until it's patched to run better.

Awesome update to a classic game!

I originally got this game when it was called Dragon Warrior for the NES. It came free with a subscription to Nintendo Power, and ever since then I have been hooked. The visuals to this game have been updated but still have that great retro pixel look. The music has also been given a tweak and sounds great.
Now this is one of the first JRPGs ever made so it is very basic. But SquareEnix has done a nice job of upping the amount of gold and exp gained so the game moves along nicely.
The in game text has a William Shakespeare feel to it, and to anyone who played the original they kind of take it to the next level.
I love this game! To gamers looking to check out Dragon Quest for the first time go with IV or VIII. For gamers looking for a fun trip down memory lane, this ones a must have.
