Description

Do you love codes and secrets? Morse Toad is the fantastic educational app that teaches you morse code through a series of simple lessons and exercises. Based on the world renown Koch method, letters are learned one at a time -- at full speed -- and when the player demonstrates their mastery of the new letter, another is added until the full alphabet is learned.
This app is for you if you ever:
* Plan to learn morse code
* Plan to be held hostage in a spanish villa
* Plan to signal a search helicopter with a flashlight
* Plan to be trapped in a mine and communicate with rescuers through tugs on a rope
Here's what people have to say:
"My friend and I both used your app to learn Morse Code while on a plane to a hacker conference. It's really polished!" - A guy the author works with

Fun and incredibly effective

For several years I've been trying, off and on, to learn Morse Code. It's so complicated that it must take years... Or so I thought. 30 minutes here and there over the past week, I've accomplished more than in the past several years. And I had fun doing it! This is, BY FAR, the best Morse-learning app available... And I've tried several paid ones!

Fun app

I enjoyed this app and think it does a great job of teaching code. I just wish I could increase the speed to 30wpm.

.-/.- -/./.../- - -/- -/. (!!!)

If you’re trying to learn CW (Morse code) I highly recommend the pixel-tastic retro-themed Morse Toad on the iOS App Store. Teaches you one letter at a time with good periodic reviews. Note that it’s more a tutorial for the *listener* than the sender, but my primary usage is when a repeater announces its call sign via cw.
For the way I learn, it’s better at teaching me to transcribe to a keyboard than to saying a letter (that is to say, it’s teaching me visual recognition and muscle memory more than it’s teaching me letter association), but it’s still a good base.
As to improvements:
Teaches letters and numbers only, no symbols (I would pay more for a symbols mode as an in-app purchase).
A mode that spells out dictionary words and forces you to type them out (or pick from a list) would be useful.
A cool mode might be where you have to say the letter, rather than typing it, but I don’t know how the iOS input methods would handle this it. Absent that, the best way to practice may still be with a partner (even one who doesn’t understand cw) and have them key your answers.

Learning CW? Get this app.

Just completed 8 week class with CWOps Academy. Great class, and this app hits the spot to help with listening comprehension.
Please add “settings” so that additional system sounds (iOS Settings -> Sounds) can be selected for “success” and “try again” sounds. Please also allow in settings the ability to adjust the sound levels for feedback, or allowing mute of these sounds.
3/2/18 Cannot begin level “10” “Challenge Three” no icon to tap to begin session on intro screen for this level”.
Settings addition: please add ability to adjust frequency of key tone.
Otherwise 😍😍😍😍😍
4/10/18 - app working great. 👊🏼
Mike, please consider ability to change morse tone frequency, and as requested previously, the ability to choose from System Settings - Sounds the success and try-again tones.

The length of the dah

There appears to be a shorter dah when paired with a dit. The O is clearly distinguishable but the K with dah dit dah has what appears to be shorter dahs.
Maybe it is the speed, but it is, at times annoying to get 80% and then redo the lesson and get 40 or 50%.
Any help on this would be appreciated.

Amazing

This is the best of the best morse code trainer apps you can possibly have. With this I was able to fully learn the sounds in one day, then over the course of a few months I have been mastering hearing and deciphering them, and throughout, this app has been along the way.

Needs a patch

Great program but does not go past about 10 lessons. Would give it 4 stars if all worked well. Giving it a 2 until fix is made and tried. Contacted author and he stated a patch has it will be given to Apple. Have not seen anything yet.
Would suggest getting rid of the chime doubt after each correct answer. Very annoying. Would also recommend some way to bookmark where you left off. Every time I started app it took me back to the beginning.

AMAZING!!!

Ok, this app is amazing, like pure amazing.
It's easy, and fun at the same time.
It's gets harder over time, but it does not overflow you with the knowledge
I love the little messages that he say in the beginning of each lesson (sometimes)
The only thing is that it says it will not work with future versions of iOS and I'm worried. I'm fact I'm very worried, I don't want to lose this app.
Overall, great app for beginners

One of the funniest ways to learn morse code using the Koch method.

This is by far the funniest and fastest ways I have seen to learn Morse code numbers and letters. Would be nice to have some punctuation and prosigns. Also, progression should go a little longer or be adjustable before moving on to the next letter but it still works great. Excellent app. Thanks

Excellent concept hobbled by a single poor design choice

Speed not adjustable and default is quite fast. It might be appropriate for intermediate practice but this is for new learners, not sharpening or maintaining skill.
This flaw also makes certain letters, to beginner ears, almost indistinguishable.
How hard would it be to add a variable speed slider? Not very. Seems like a decision to omit one rather than oversight and the result is an unnecessarily intimidating learning app.
If this were fixed, it would be, hands-down, the best iOS Morse tutor by a country mile.
Tech issues: No audio on iPhone 5s running iOS 10.3.1 (14E304). Works fine on iPad Mini 2 w/Retina display running same iOS version (14E304).

Best app to learn the code

This app is great for learning the dots and dashes. The speed took a couple days to get used to but now I hear it plainly and the speed sounds normal. I have learned all the letters and numbers in a matter of two weeks. This is great.
Also anyone complaining about the "sound it makes when you get it right," is silly. It's a great sound. Don't get rid of it.

Good but needs...

You need a way to remove the toad sound when right or wrong. The extra sound is very distracting from learning. Will update when I can remove extra sound.

Needs work

I like the concept but if started learning with this app I would have quit. No customization with the tone and no ability to change the words per minute, not everyone is capable of learning at something like 25 or 30 wpm. Please let us turn off the annoying sound if you get it the letter correct. The absolute worst and maybe it's just me, but there is something the way g, r, k, and p are played that makes them really hard to tell apart. I know these letters and don't get them confused any other time.

Great little app helped me learn the symbols in about eight hours. I wish it would continue on to do small sets of letters or small words. I'm don't yet have a developed enough ear for long series of characters which is what other apps are throwing at me.

Love it!!

I really love this app!! Learning morse code through games and a little bit of its history along the way is fun and very effective for me. I remember all alphabets and numbers in 3 days!, but still need more listening practices and how to make sentences in order to use in real life.
I recommend this app to any people who interested in morse code and don't know where to start.
Thank you the creator for creating this app. I hope you would continue to develop more challenging lessons and word puzzles. <3

Awesome app to learn Morse Code

Best Morse app, I love it, and more impressive is my kids love it and are really getting it. Only suggestion would be to replace the toad zoom effect with a flash of white or another color based on the character, so I can learn to recognize characters visually (flashlight Morse). Maybe a paid feature? I'd buy it!

Fun, But Needs More

This is a fun game, but lacks a few features that would make this a truly stellar app. For example, there is no way to turn off the annoying chime that plays when you select the correct letter. There is also no speed or tone adjustment. I really hope the developer considers making a second version with more features. An "endless" challenge setting would be a great addition.

Pretty good

It's free, there's no ads.
The characters are crisp and well done. App says it plays the characters at "full speed." It doesn't say what speed that is. The common terms are in words per minute. I guess they mean 13 words per minute.
This is a good introduction to letters and numerals. You can complete the whole thing in 45 minutes. Once you finish that's all there is. You can refresh your code by repeating. The thing I like best is that the character speed is realistically fast while the spacing between characters is slow. This helps you to learn how the characters sound as a unit rather than counting das and dits in your head.
Thank you for a good app.

Great Morse Code tutor! Thanks

Loved the app. Would happily pay for in-app purchases for add-ons for remaining Morse code symbols (period, question mark, etc.), q-codes (short-hand codes used in amateur radio), and maybe the 200 most common words or something similar. Getting used to hearing and copying groups of letters is a critical step to being able to copy Morse Code.

Quick and Fun Way to Learn!

I was amazed how quickly I learned morse code, and how well it stays, too. Sure, you won't get up to speed with full words with this app, but you will learn the letters and numbers. And with a full review once or twice a week, they'll stay with you, too. My only complaint is the sound of the code is markedly softer than the congratulatory "yes,-you-got-that-right" noise. The morse code should be the same volume or louder, and there's no way to adjust it. Hopefully the developer reads these reviews. Other apps will get you up to speed with words, but I suspect the best way to do that is by listening to real, live or taped, morse....over and over again.

Really good but wish I could pay to get rid of ads

This is a really good little app for learning morse code character-by-character. I only wish there was IAP to turn off ads, or a "pro" version. If you have a poor internet connection the app will hang for a while whenever it wants to show an ad, holding up your progress.

Chime. Chime. Chime.

Crime.
Would be very nice to turn that annoying chime off after each correct choice.
Also nice would be to take advantage of the motion sensor so the keyboard could turn sideways so those of us with fat fingies would be just a bit less likely to press the wrong key.
Started learning code - again, I got the merit badge in boy scouts over 40 years ago - maybe two years ago when I picked up ham radio as a hobbie. Tried several different apps (Koch), websites for training. Heard about this on 100 WAAW on FB and thought what the heck.
I would PAY to turn off that chime, by the way.
Just a couple days in and I’m hitting about 95-100 percent with half the alphabet and can see how this is going to be very useful. Once I’ve pounded my way through it to the end I’ll try those koch sites again.
Chime. Chime. Chime.

Fun way to learn

Previous attempts at learning morse code didn't do so well. I either got tired of using a pen and paper or else I realized I was memorizing the keyboard layout to the sounds. This seems better in that regard and maps the patterns to the keys and doesn't add the pressure of getting letters all right in a series.

Great, fun learning and practice tool

The minimalistic 1980's aesthetic is appealing in a retro way, but it's the rock solid design of the user interaction (gameplay and pedagogy) that really makes this a great app. Its focus is teaching you aural recognition of all the letters and numbers in Morse, combining Koch (add one letter to your leaned repertoire at a time) and Farnsworth (always listen to letters at full speed, but have them spaced out to give you time to think) techniques.
