Exactly what I want/need. I have it sync through Dropbox and use nvAlt on my laptop. Perfect combination!
I've bought a lot of notes apps and had originally dismissed this one without giving it a legitimate shot. I'm glad I did. This developer has put a lot of effort into making the perfect app.

Beautiful but not user friendly
Hashtag suggestions aren't working
Search doesn't show inline results and not helpful when you have multiple documents with same hashtags
Interface is somewhat cumbersome. Tapping the open note doesn't let you edit (like you'd expect)
Needs improvement. So much hype and it doesn't feel it lived up to it.

Love the app, but latest version has bugs.
The latest version isn't automatically saving files. Clicking on a created file (created from the app) in the directory throwa the error of "file not found", making you lose all your data in that note because saving to Dropbox ;haven't tested the others) isn't being done.

Works excellently with Dropbox
I purchased this app so that I could edit text files in Dropbox and it does that well and reliably. There is a slight learning curve in that you need to "add" a "folder" that you pick from Dropbox then it grays out some text files such as sql files, but you can click on those greyed out files and "edit them as a text file".

Fantastic Notes App
I just got this note app and I have already moved all of my notes into it. I think it has just the right balances of features and simplify and the design is gorgeous. I am glad to be rid of Evernote and Apple Notes for this. It seems to have the best aspects of every Notes app I have used. High recommendation.

Good, but the interface still confuses me
This is a great text editor, but I had been using it for months before I realize that it was capable of opening files in iCloud drive and other document providers.
It is a bit confusing that it has this folder concept that you get to from the slideover screen on the left, but you would open an iCloud drive or other storage location file from the plus button within the editing window.

My favorite text & markdown editor for iPhone
1Writer is by far my favorite iPhone text and Markdown editor. Most important is the fact that it simply feels right. Stuff I love about it, in random order:
* It's clean. When I'm writing, there's just the editing area and the keyboard (some other editors leave the top status bar in place, for example)
* It has inline markdown formatting (H1's are larger, bulleted lists are indented properly, etc.)
* It has the option to launch with a blank document for quick note-taking
* Related to that, the default filename is a sensible timestamp
* It has an attractive dark mode
* It allows me to customize the font, which seems to be verboten these days for some reason
* It has word count optionally displayed in the upper right corner of the editing window (which can be configured to display character, sentence, or paragraph count)
* It's updated for iPhone 6 (I find it very difficult to type in apps that haven't yet updated for larger sized iPhones – looking at you, Daedalus Touch)
* Markdown preview
* You can add what I'm going to call GFM style checkboxes (like `* [ ]`) which you can check off in markdown preview and which you can export to other apps like Things
* It has an extensible “Actions” menu (Tweet, send to Day One, etc.)
* It has an optional extended row of keys on the keyboard
* It converts hashtags in the text to tags that can be used to organize your files
The list is growing long and rambling, so I'll cut it short and say it's clean and attractive with sensible defaults, and if all you want to do is type notes this app excels at that, but there's lots of functionality under the hood too. My sense is that I've only scratched the surface.

This text writing app will change your life! I love its night mode and extended keyboard. Very forward thinking. This app will increase your productivity exponentially! More app developers would do well to take a few lessons from 1Writer because this app takes every other text app to school!

Superb Dropbox/Markdown text editor
After trying many text editors, I've settled on 1Writer. Dropbox sync, excellent Markdown support, and useful scripts allow me to do just about everything I wanted to do in a plaintext editor.
Just the right amount of features, no extra fluff.

Doesn't sync to Dropbox
I bought this just to edit text files on Dropbox. I want to edit in place to keep sharing links accurate. However there doesn't seem to be any way to just edit in place. My edits aren't synced back. Bought Byword which works perfect. Disappointed I can't get my money back now.

1Writer hits the sweet spot between elegant simplicity and a rich, customizable feature set. I've moved to an entirely Markdown-based notes system thanks to this wonderful app. Can't recommend enough.

Cloud Sync Does Not Work
The main reason I went for 1Writer over another app was for Dropbox / iCloud Sync. Neither works as described. When you go to add Dropbox as a location to sync, it just opens the Dropbox app ... nothing else. Same happens with iCloud. I suppose this could be user error (me), or it could be my device (brand new iPad Pro 9.7 on 10.1.1). Couldn't find instructions to check if I am doing something wrong, though the interface seems pretty straight-forward. It just doesn't work as advertised.

Perfect Dropbox-compatible Markdown Editor
I was looking for a full-featured Dropbox compatible markdown editor for a long time and tried several apps in this category, but after reading a review about the new features of 1Writer, I decided to give this app a try.
Extended keyboard, check box option, real-time preview, Dropbox auto-sync, and an online repository for actions are just some of its advantages. The notification widget and sharing options are awesome and handy as well.
Although I was confused at first while I was trying to get the auto-sync feature to work, after a few minutes, I simply set up a Dropbox folder and now everything will be synced between all of my devices.

Deleted my entire Dropbox
I wanted to add a fodler for 1Writer in my Dropbox. I mistakenly put it in the wrong place, and when I deleted it, 1Writer deleted every file in my Dropbox except the new 1Writer folder that was now in the correct place. I've used so many apps that have connected to my Dropbox, not sure how these idiots couldn't have not had safeguards in place to prevent this.

Superb for Markdown
My life runs on text files in Dropbox. For me, 1Writer is the ideal companion to nvALT for Mac OS X. As soon as I lock my phone after editing a file in 1Writer, Dropbox syncs it to my computer, where I can pick up in nvALT right where I left off in 1Writer. I wish Apple's native Handoff features worked that well.
The 1Writer actions directory is just icing on the cake. Check it out.

Promising but stuck in ancient Markdown
The program has promise, and was recommended by the creator of Permanote as a replacement when Permanote is discontinued. Unfortunately, for all its nice features (the in-app browser is very handy), 1writer doesn't support any recent markdown extensions like column spanning for table cells, footnotes, etc. As a result, documents that looked great in Permanote just don't translate. If the markdown support is brought up to 2016 levels, it will be a fine program.

Incorrect markdown rendering
If your markdown doc has a list with 3 levels of indentation, the third level is rendered the same as the second level. This is very confusing for markdown docs which are large deeply nested outlines.

TOPS!-Ulysses and iAWriter
I have tried Ulysses and iAWriter
app and this is the best of them combined!!!!! Why?
1.Allows bullet points the other two appa iAWriter has BP but doesn't always work. Ulysses doesn't have that feature as far I can tell.
2.The night mode on this is beautiful and I love how cursor is red to stand out.
3. OPTIONS!- Yes you can adjust line space and font size and style not just in edit mode but in preview.
4.Please come out with an Macbook Desktop App!!!!!!

Nice text/markdown editor, needs some additional features
I've tried almost all the text/markdown editors. I need access to my full Dropbox without a performance Meltdown. I used Nebulous Notes/ Permanote for quite a while, but was experiencing ongoing stability problems, crashes, slowdowns. Aesthetically, I prefer Editorial, Byword, and Ulysses, but none of them—as far as I know—allow access to the full Dropbox account, only a specified sub folder. 1Writer is pretty good. It can be slow to update folder/file listings, and there is no feedback, so app appears to have frozen or stalled, but it's just waiting to update the file listing. Be nice if this sped up, but at least provide user feedback that something is happening. Also, it really, really needs a recent files list, something that is fairly common in many other similar apps.

I use this app every day. I loved drafts and byword both for different reasons, But 1Writer has become my ONE WRITER. It pretty much IS nvXX for iOS... i highly recommend this to anyone who loves markdown writers. This is DOPE.

THE Dropbox/file-based markdown, tagging Editor
This works for my nvalt, Dropbox, note-keeping system. Fast, converts snippets of rich text from the browser. The developer deserves all the accolade. It's so good that I only wish that I can find an equivalent program on my Mac, or that the developer would create the same App on the MacOS.

App-Filesystem as how stopper
The apps I use should not /must not dictate the way I organize my work. I should be able to open and save files in iCloud as I decide not as a sub-file or sub-folder in the app like 1Writer. Otherwise this is a nice app.

Best plain text writing app
I've been a fan of plain text writing for a long time and have tried more apps that I can remember. I always come back to 1Writer. It gets everything right: just the right about of keyboard shortcuts for Markdown, multiple Dropbox folder sync, just the right amount of syntax highlighting. The iPad Pro version is also very well done.

1Writer is by far the most all-around flexible and pleasant app I've found for long-form writing. It beats out Editorial, Byword, Ulysses, and iA Writer because it alone has all of the following:
1. A minimal, attractive, and customizable design
2. The ability to *only* view the document text
3. Dropbox integration *and* the ability to store *multiple* folders as shortcuts without having to navigate my entire Dropbox directory
It does have other features I haven't so far found a use for, including extension capabilites that may or may not rival Editorial's depending on your needs. But the balance of functionality and minimalism is what really sets 1Writer apart.
The competing apps either haven't been updated recently (Editorial's split-view update has evidently been delayed till the second coming of Elijah) or are arbitrarily locked down from certain things because of high-concept development directives (oh yes, iA Writer team, heaven forbid I suffer a distraction of 30 seconds to choose a non-fixed-width font). Editorial and Ulysses each have tools I continue to use, but neither is as well-suited for my needs.
The lack of a command-f keyboard "find" function is the only feature I really miss. You can get a search function from the action directory (which I'm sure I'd use more often if I didn't already have Editorial's), but a built-in search would be more convenient. But that's not a big enough complaint for me to conscionably remove a star.

Perfect writing/note-taking app, especially for power users.
I'm an academic and I do all my note-taking and writing in plaintext/markdown. I've tried a lot of plantext/mardown editors over the years and 1Writer is *clearly* the best iOS plaintext/markdown editor.
It's perhaps not for everyone. If you're used to Simplenote/Evernote style applications, it can take a little time to adjust to a different file organization setup. But, to me, 1Writer is just as fast and clean as the simplest apps. Yet it also has tons of thoughtfully designed 'power user' features and through extensions, has infinite flexibility.

Excellent for Dropbox + markdown
This app is the perfect companion to a Dropbox-synced plain text markdown workflow. I use this along with Drafts and am extremely happy with the combination.

Promising, but Dropbox sync is buggy
This app has the chance to be a major contender in the iOS writing space, but in my usage, I've found Dropbox sync to be really spotty.
I've never lost data, but 1Writer consistently creates conflict documents, which makes me worry about versioning and document integrity.
Otherwise, this is a really well-made app, and the experience of actual writing has been top notch. Fix the sync, and I'll be back.

Great, however...
I originally gave this one star because it doesn't find/replace text built-in the app; however, after doing some digging, it turns out you can install it by going to the app's official website on the device you have the app installed and looking for the "action directory," then installing it from there. In fact, I'm actually extremely hype for this action directory of theirs at the moment, as it looks like you can create/install custom scripts into the app (they also have a library of scripts of their own on the site). Freaking rad.
That said, this looks to be the only Markdown editor available for the iPad Pro, including full multitasking support. It also has inline Markdown preview (awesome) and, unlike some other editors we won't mention, handles this feature with large, 700k+ character documents just fine.
Still, it would be nice to have find/replace, built in the app instead of having to invoke the scripts menu every time you want to quickly find "next" or "previous."

The *Best* Markdown App!
I'm happy to see a bunch of new press for this app. I've been using it for years and love its power and beauty!
This is by far my favorite Markdown editor. Byword is very popular, but 1Writer just blows it out if the water. It's incredibly aesthetically pleasing, and the developer is constantly refining it.
Here's some thoughts:
- I wish that the settings & tags view was easier to get to. I use that a lot. I don't like that I have to go all the way out to the main folders because I only use Dropbox.
- Silly gripe, but I wish that I could change the markup settings. For example, I like to use a hyphen for a new list item and an underscore for italics. I can manually put them in, but that destroys the nice quick buttons' purpose.
- It would be great if a cursor position circle was available like WordBox and Write have.
- YAML front-matter support would be really nice.
- Any chance for MultiMarkdown support?
- I love the new settings for the today view, and the share extension is wonderful!

Best Plain-Text/Markdown App Out There
I have tried most of the minimalist plain-text/ markdown apps available and this is by far the best. Before 1Writer I bounced back and forth between several apps, never able to find one that was quite right. I have been using 1Writer for at least a couple years and have yet to find another app that comes close in terms of functionality, ease of use, aesthetics and customer support.

Just right
I'm finding 1Writer sits in a sweet spot for my modest needs. It has enough features to do what I need and not so many that it's overwhelming. It has been solid and stable under iOS 8 and 9. It's extendable and has a reasonable number of useful enhancements that can be installed. Maybe not as many as some others but honestly I don't need a lot for what I do on an iPad. I do like that it doesn't impose a specific Dropbox folder but instead has access to any of my Dropbox folders. I had a UI question (related to using a Bluetooth keyboard instead of the iPad's keyboard) and got a prompt, truly helpful reply from the developer. I have two other iOS Markdown and text editors, but 1Writer is the one I'm reaching for first.

My iOS nv-Alt app
I live in nv-Alt on my Mac and 1Writer has become my psuedo nv-Alt app on iOS. The app's search features are great and and editing documents is a breeze.
The only thing holding back that last star are some screen layout problems in landscape mode. Everything works great in portrait mode, but in landscape some of the screen gets cut off.
Fix that and I'll be back to hand out that last star.

1. Please obscure/blur the view when passcode is enabled and the app is backgrounded. The text can still be viewed in app switcher (double click home button) and briefly when returning to the app before the passcode screen appears.
2. An iCloud option for syncing documents, folder structure, and settings across devices would be nice.

Problems with all my old markdown editors left me searching... Search ended with this. Everything about it is right.
And the actions menu!? I no longer have to do multiple quick flicks to reach the bottom of the page, scroll to jump to a heading, or painfully manually search and replace.

Solid
I love markdown and am always taking my notes in markdown and syncing them with Dropbox. This app does both and handles them solidly. The app is stable and has enough options to configure it how you want it to. The app is still actively developed so it's been improving, definitely worth it.

One app to rule them all
Not often you see a devloper who sticks with his app and upgrades it. This app keeps getting better. It has replaced my all notes app (simple formatting). UI is great and app never crashes and its fast! Developer is also very nice and helpful. Check out his other app for to-dos :)

Wildly exceeded my expectations.
I bought this app hoping for a solid Dropbox-compatible notes app with a clean, modern aesthetic.
1Writer is much more than I could have hoped. Syncing is fast and reliable, yes. The aesthetic is nice, yes. But the overall attention to detail here is astounding: the icons are descriptive and beautiful, the interactions make sense, customization is extensive but restrained, and file management is surprisingly solid.
This app is highly recommended. It's just very well-designed and pleasant to use: I actually wrote this review in 1Writer.

Perfect for writing

And the support is nearly unbievable. I was trying to figure out synching between devices and the author replied quickly over a weekend.
Surely one of the very best apps ever...and I only just heard about it in one of those "Top 10 Apps You Need" articles online.

Good app, one annoying bug
I'm experiencing a frequent bug that prevents me from editing text at the bottom of a file. The last eight or so lines of text get obscured by the keyboard and the document won't scroll up enough to let me edit them. Dismissing the app in the iPhone's task manager and restarting seems to fix it for a little while.

Like many of the rest of you, I've tried over a dozen iOS text editors in some inane Goldilocks-like quest for perfection. This one does what I want best: works well and stays out of the way. Just enough customization to make it behave in a way that suits my style so I can forget about it.

Good App
I have been testing, playing with, and using 1writer for a day now. I must say that I really like it. However, I have found several bugs and have various gripes:
When using the extended keyboard to enter lists, if you 'return' to finish the list instead of deleting the final bullet or number, the list will automatically be continued later in the document. This can be seen when trying to enter another type of list, e.g a numbered list instead of bullet. In this instance the type will not change.
We cannot change the name of the main Dropbox folder.
Overall this is a great app! If you're interested in an app that writes with markdown, this is perfect; I love it for notes and todo lists.

Perfect for note taking
It started with iA writer and then vesper and now I find myself in a weird world listening to MPU and buying expensive apps. Not that this is expensive. In fact, it's a perfectly reasonable price considering 1Writer is phenomenal.
I haven't been happy with note taking apps since I've had an iPhone in various iterations since 2010. There are certain prerogatives that always causes a slight *kink* in the interface that prevented me from access.
With a today extension, markdown preview, Dropbox support, Actions, various themes and TextExpander support, and everything else I need, this app is in my dock.

Best Writing App on the App Store
I looked really thoroughly for an app I could use for writing (lyrics/poems mostly) because a lot of my ideas come at night and Notes is blinding with the white background. I searched through dozens of apps and spent some money but wasn't happy. Then I saw 1Writer featured by Apple and gave it a shot.
It is everything I could have wanted and more.
1Writer has the most pleasing dark theme I have seen in a writing app yet. I leave it set that way all the time - I just love the perfect selection of hues and the way it sets the mood for writing. It's perfect! Not too little contrast and not too much.
There are lots of other reasons why this is absolutely a 5 star app, like the incredibly comprehensive customization options, iCloud and iTunes Documents folders, the beautiful design, ease of use, and on and on. I normally give free apps a shot before going for the paid ones, but I can say without hesitation that this app is worth every penny and should be every writer's first choice for writing.
The one thing I would like to see is the option to create sub-folders within the iCloud folder to organize documents better, if that's possible.

Finally found the 1(Writer)!
I’ve been happily using 1Writer for over a year and loving it. I’m a regular Markdown and nValt user on my computers, and having the ability to see and search through all those notes on my phone is invaluable.
I avoid using the iPhone to compose anything too lengthy, but if it is more than a quick note in Drafts (saved to Dropbox where I can view it in 1Writer of course) then 1Writer really is as good as it gets for writing in Markdown on a phone.
The ability to add actions for things you commonly do are just icing on the cake. Just buy it already.

BEST writing app by far.
I'm not BS'ing when I say that I literally tried almost all possible writer apps, and had to purchase them. None of them had the right look that I wanted, nor the right features. 1Writer is perfect, and looks amazing. It even has subfolders, which was the selling point.
SUGGESTIONS: Please include more features like colored fonts and underline. Thank you.

The best markdown editor for iOS!
I tried many other applications for editing markdown text files. This app is the best! Seamless dropbox syncronizing works great and reliable. Toolbar for markdown function is very convenient.
Image attachment is the best part of this app! It uploads the image files to Dropbox and make a public link for that!
If there're something I need more, that is the stability. It crashed sometimes and it's very disappointing. And I want more elegant theme like ByWord.
Anyway 1Writer is the best for me.

One of the best markdown apps available
- The checkbox lists are great. I haven't found any other app that does this as simply or as nicely. The app can slow down when using check boxes in longer documents, but otherwise works terrifically. I just wish more apps implemented support (especially in OSX).
- The inline text formatting as you type has improved dramatically, and works better than the competitors (both in style, as headers are properly big, not just bold, and in function, as the formatting is more reliable).
- New files always start with the date. Perfect! Very helpful for organizing notes in a flat file structure (though of course the folder navigation is simple enough itself, and super easy to create new directories).
1Writer has replaced a number of alternatives, and right now it's the only one I use regularly.

Best plain text editor out there
I've tried iA Writer (Pro), simplenote, Upword, and many other plain text editors, and none of them compare in functionality or price. This is the best priced app for its functionality and its functionality is truly remarkable. Seriously. Smart keyboard shortcuts, ability to link to other docs, Dropbox, Evernote and iCloud support, super useful built-in browser...etc. I seriously can't believe how good this app is. Wish I could get my money back on iA writer...just hope the developer continues support.

Awesome notes app, keeps getting better!
1Writer is an awesome Markdown editor that just keeps getting better and better. The inline Markdown preview, addition of checklists and universal iPad/iPhone availability make it ideal for my narrative-driven planning and organization style. However, I was pleasantly surprised, then blown away, by the addition of the integrated web browser, the elegant Today Screen and Safari integration, and 1Writer Actions! The developer, Ngoc Luu, is amazing -- super responsive and clearly focused on making 1Writer the best writing tool and writing experience. A Mac version of 1Writer would end my quest for the ideal writing toolkit.

One of my top 5 apps!
This application is a top productivity staple for me. Best text editor available. The keyboard and UI features alone place it above the competition - these features having been the main source of frustration in the other text editors I have tried. Some of my fav features (keep in mind this is simply a quick list):
* Markdown support and keyboard tools.
* Ability to insert hyperlink or picture at the click of a button, with pictures stored by link to Dropbox so as to not increase local storage on device.
* Ability to load folders from Dropbox and other cloud based locations for easy access to files stored from those locations. I can easily edit a document stored on Dropbox from multiple devices without worrying about syncing.
* URL scheme support - I love love love this. I have a few LCP actions that I use on a daily basis (ex: to append to lists), works flawlessly with 1Writer.
Great application. $2.99 is more than worth it.

I have paid for so many different note taking and text editing apps. I have finally found the one that has built in workflows that get the job done cleanly and quickly with flawless sync. 1Writer is the one.

The best, finally
Tried all the other note apps that sync with Dropbox and this is the best by far. The updates keep knocking it out of the park and continue to impress me. You can tell this dev cares and uses the app daily. You will not regret grabbing this one and syncing it up.

1 Writer; the name says it all...
because the more you use this, the more you'll realize that this can replace almost all the single purpose text based apps you have. Aside from being the best text editor I've used for iOS; its UI, filing and search systems, Dropbox integration, TextExpander and X-callback-URL support, and unique implementation of actionable lists in view mode means that this can (and for me has) become the most used app on your phone or tablet. I use it for composing field reports and e-mails for work, journaling, lists for shopping and todo's (and sharing same via Dropbox)...everything but capturing tidbits of info. In addition, the developer has responded to all of my 4 questions since purchasing this in Oct of '13 within 48 hours. Buy it, you will NOT regret it.

Great Dropbox editor
After PlainText switched hands, I had slowly stopped using text files in Dropbox. But 1Writer has changed that for me. Very solid and stable. I've never had any issues and I use it daily for note and journal writing. Keep up the good work!

Unbelievably good for the price
I have tried almost every top notch and decent editors, this is definitely the best value for money. I can't say it is best in every aspect but it's as good as anything apart from drafts and editorial.
The recent update brought inline markdown preview which isn't that common on iOS yet, and fixed the having-to-manually-save problem, making this a very competitive choice.
Plus this one has a few vibrant but not blinding color scheme which is not that common either. They won't be good for long form writing but hey, not everyone who writes things down are writers.
I'd love to see it to add Dropbox versioning feature, but I consider this a great text editor as it is now, top five if you ask me.
Unless you already have too many text editors like I do, you don't even need to think before you buy this.

This app beats all competitors
Nebulous notes, notesy, WriteRoom, they ain't got nothing on this app. Support for tags! MarkDown preview on opening a file, like Day One and Trunk Notes, perfect for looking up a note and readably reading it. Only notes app to do this on iPhone as far as I know. Can't be beat. Just update TextExpander support please!

The missing link for Scrivener
Thank you, this wonderful app just ended a 2+ year search for an ideal mobile companion to Scrivener for the Mac. Could not be more thrilled! Nice work, blows away any other option for that purpose. And I've tried them all. I smiled once it was set up to my liking. :-)

Exactly what I was looking for
I haven't heard about this app from anyone, but stumbled across it in the store. What a fantastic app! It's exactly what I was looking for. Syncing via Dropbox, iCloud, and integration with Evernote are staples in any text editor, and this has it covered. A gorgeous design and the ability to change the default red color scheme are certainly welcome. The markdown parsing is great, AND the ability to create checkbox list entries anywhere in a document is unlike any other app I've used. Great work!

Loads fast, easy to use and supports inline images
There really isn't a better app out there that is better suited for Markdown notes than 1Writer. Excellent tag support, inline images, great Markdown rendering, PDF export, fast startup time and Dropbox + iCloud integration all make this the best Markdown editor ever.
