Triggering, more horror than they let on
I bought this game under the assumption it would be primarily a puzzle game with some story to it. What they fail to properly highlight are the resolute horror elements in this.
The first stage wasn't too bad until towards the end I picked up clues that this wasn't just about mystery-solving and suspense where you can stay emotionally distanced from what's happening. What got me, however, was the sense of "oh God is a dead body going to show up in one of these frames?"
And in Stage 2 they substitute actual body parts with a picture of mannequin parts within the context of multination (described in the text.) Dear Lord, can they not label this sort of stuff PROMINENTLY and not have it hidden down in the small text at the bottom? I paid money for this game...
Then at the end of Stage 1, you reach a dead end that requires you to finish the puzzles, and the last line of text at the dead end essentially says "the door to leave is locked, you're trapped."
I'm sorry, but my PTSD got all sorts of flared up. I could not put down the game and simply stop at that point, not because it was such a great game but because in my mind, I got a flashback of being trapped. I HAD TO FINISH that level in order to help me reconnect to the reality of NOT being trapped.
So I finished, started feeling a little less jittery, and decided to check out Stage 2 for the sake of seeing if that was a fluke or if the game really was supposed to get intense. Yes, it is. Horror elements get way intensified. Creepy puzzles with the implication of possible death if you do the wrong thing, Saw-like voice recordings, a jump scare screaming doll and a jump scare skull image popping up after the final puzzle.
NO.
I'm sorry for all you normal folks out there but for those of us with PTSD and such, the lack of clear labeling here is unacceptable. It appears to be a sort of glossy 40-50's spy/detective theme from the preview shots and intro, but it is NOT THAT ATMOSPHERE. It goes straight into some very heavy, deeply triggering topics and drags you along for the ride.
In fact, let me list some things that get brought up directly or are implied that we should have been WARNED about in some manner (based on only playing 2 levels, I'm done now, I'm not triggering my PTSD further for the sake of a stinking review):
- Mind control
- Kidnapping/drugging
- Being held captive
- Torture/threat of harm
- Manipulation/psychological torture
- Murder
- Attacker mentally disturbed
- Male attacker motivated by harming/"punishing" women (ALL jarring horror elements not directly introduced by the "attacker" and his (?) technologies use FEMALES and FEMALE IMAGERY to make the FEMALE main character feel unsafe/scared/threatened; female doll, female mannequin in dining hall, "mama bear" dialogue, mutilated female mannequin parts, screaming female doll, etc.)
- Mutilation/body horror with accompanying visuals (diagrams of implanted devices for controlling people, pic of mannequin body parts that might as well be real human body parts due to photo quality and context)
- Puzzle-style "death traps" (the Saw movies come to mind, though the threat of death as a result of failing has so far mostly just been vaguely implied as a possibility)
- Jump scares (visual and auditory)
- Sinister voice recordings w/ unexpected creepy visuals, some voices distorted/deeper than what sounds like normal for the speaker
- Screaming doll recording (not like "oh it's just a baby crying!" more like "oh it's a demon doll screaming then dissolving into malevolent laughter!") for no apparent reason other than providing a jump scare
- Frequent/constant expectation of seeing something horrifying without proper warning/context clues (one example: a series of pictures you push a button to switch between, where style/context lends one to believe something disturbing might suddenly appear)
- Music/atmosphere is NOT "suspenseful" but fitting of "horror" in a sort of oddly Victorian macabre style where you expect gruesome science experiments and gory murder within the context of the plot
I give a 3/5 rating for the sake of game quality and development. I understand this game is not meant for me so I'm not giving a 1 star rating to be vindictive BUT I cannot rate it higher than 3/5 because of the glaring, unacceptable lack of proper representation of the game content/style. I personally have endured torture as a child, psychological and physical abuse by caretakers, and ritualistic abuse in a cult for almost a decade during early adulthood. I DO NOT NEED A HORROR GAME MARKETED AS A SUSPENSEFUL PUZZLER GAME.
I was so hopeful because of all the glowing reviews and didn't want to just "give up" on the game after the first signs of me getting scared. Unfortunately the initial scares were merely the beginning of woes. I appreciate this game for what it is but I am beyond disappointed at the company for being more concerned about "suspense and surprise" than respecting people like me who have a very genuine NEED to know up front if horror is involved in the media we consume. It isn't about being "easily frightened," it's about having a disability that we can't control.
One little mention of "horror/fear elements" buried down in the fine print does NOT constitute proper warning. Besides, that label isn't even truly appropriate and still doesn't fully encapsulate the aforementioned list of horror elements I outlined. For folks like me who have lived through torture, those truly horrifying themes and content aren't just some low-budget Halloween props on someone's front lawn, they're over the top reminders of past horror that comes intruding back into our present reality unbidden.
