Description

Chord! is your next songbook, chords and scales app for guitar or any fretted instrument like bass, ukulele, banjo, etc.
With Chord!, you can write a song by simply dragging and dropping chords, transpose it in any key, compute the fingerings with any tuning and generate a beautiful print-ready PDF, etc.
You can also import your existing songs in text format (please note that the app does not ship with songs). You can also link audio tracks from your music library and play them at the same time while adjusting their pitch and/or speed.
Unlike other chord charts app, the app doesn't rely on a database of charts. Instead, it computes and analyses all the possible fingerings.
You don't even have to know music theory to use it: behind its brute force, the app knows how to handle by itself some subtleties of music in order to give meaningful results.
If you don't have to be an advanced player to use the app, you can however take a look under the hood and tweak the parameters if you like! Whatever is your level or your instrument, Chord! will adapt and give you the most precise answer.
You can search for any chord, split (like D/F#) or not. If you're a beginner, you can choose the chord from a list, but you can also use the intelligent keyboard to enter the chord as it is written. If this keyboard is a great way to enter chords, it is also very useful to discover and understand how the chords are formed. You can also enter some notes on a neck to find which chords it can be. You can hear how each fingering sounds. Chord arpeggios are also supported, as well as drop voicings (drop 2, drop3, etc.).
Chords are not all and the app is also shipped with the biggest list of named scales (and you can create your own scales). It analyses and presents them with nice interactive views (scale, score and keyboard). Of course it can also lay down these scales on a neck (with sound) and compute their fingerings. Like for chords, you can even search for a scale from its fingering!
Each scale can be harmonized (decomposed into chords). You can also enter a sequence of chords to find which scale you can use to improvise onto.
You can use one of the hundred tunings shipped with the app, or you can add you own ones, for any instrument, with or without a capo, even with broken strings if you want!
The app uses custom and unique algorithms to generate charts, easily input complex harmonic structures, extract chords from fingerings, determine fingers positions, compute keys of scales, generate chords from scales and find scales that go well with some chords.
For example, Chord! is the right tool in these situations:
• You want to have your songbook available at any time, in your pocket;
• You're a beginner and you want to know how to play easily a D/F# chord;
• One gave you an ukulele and you want to know how to tune it and how to play the G Hawaiian scale;
• You want to know on what scale you can improvise for some chord sequence (and the answer can be different than the Pentatonic minor!);
• You want to print your song and share it with your band.
• You want to experiment this nice open tuning, moreover with a bottleneck;
• Your little sister can't make bar chords and you want to show her how she can do without bars, with three (little) fingers only;
• You want to impress your little sister by showing her how you can play the same chords with two bars!
• You want to understand how this fingering for C13 is actually a fingering for C13;
• You broke a string and want to know how to play some chords without;
• You want to know how Django managed to play with two and a half fingers.
The app fully support left-handed instruments.
Main functions of the app:
- Write, transpose, fingerize, print and share songs;
- Search chord fingerings (or chord charts);
- Search chords from fingerings;
- Search scale fingerings;
- Search scales from fingerings;
- Search chords from scale;
- Search scales from chords.

What's New in Version 2.5.1

v2.5.1:
• Fixes an issue with reverse chord search on iPhones running iOS 7.
• Scales collections (and not only scale fingerings collections) can be exported to PDF.
As always, your feedback is highly appreciated. If you like Chord!, please rate it in the App Store every time an update comes out, that helps me a lot! Thank you very much!
v2.5: This is a massive update:
• Scale fingerings: like for chords, the app can now compute proper scale fingerings (with block patterns) from given parameters like the maximum number of notes by string, or the maximum offset from string to string for example.
• Chord arpeggios: using the same engine as for scale fingerings, the app can compute chord arpeggios.
• Scale fingerings and chord arpeggios can be exported as full vector PDF's or raster images like JPG or PNG.
• Custom everything: you can now define completely custom chords, chord fingerings, scales and scale fingerings. These custom elements can be anything you want, even wrong musically! You're in control! No more hide an seek to find that fingering you're looking for to put in a song! Simply spawn it! You can tell the app that CΔ is the chord with notes [C E B] and with fingering [x x x 2 2 2] if you want. Once defined, your custom elements are as first class citizens as the other ones. They are included in reverse searches, harmonizations, fingerizations, etc. So now, the app handle all the chords, all the scales, and all their fingerings, and this, for any tuning.
• In the same spirit, you can define custom "Symbols" and use them to write songs. Think of "/" or "2x" for example.
• A new grouping type called Collections. They can contains ordered lists of songs, chords, scales, etc. Chord and scale fingerings collections can be printed as PDF or exported as JPG or PNG images. Collections of songs can easily be exported as files and shared with other users of the app. They don't replace tags, they live beside (and collections can be tagged too!).
• You can have several PDF export templates.
• You can link auto scrolling with audio tracks from your iTunes music library (or by adding your own files to the app). You can adjust the speed and the pitch of the playback independently. So you can bring Jimi one semitone higher if you want to play along directly with your guitar standardly tuned for example.
• The import algorithm does a better job in recognizing chords/lyrics lines, as well as chord symbols.
• Lines jumps and inlined chords can manually be removed with one touch of a button.
• Backup archives can now contain all your data: songs, chords, scales, as well as collections and tags. They are also more efficient so a thousand of songs library archive should take less than a MB.
• Songs can be sorted by Author, Title or Last modified date, and displayed as a list or as thumbnails.
• You can define your own color set for dots coloring.
• Scale list can show intervals instead of notes.
• Songs views can optionally keep the screen on.
• Basic support of bluetooth page turners by responding to up/down or left/right keystrokes.
• On iPhone, the app remembers the last chord input method used. So if you use only the "Simple mode", you don't have to select it each time. The same for scales.
• The full screen fretboard is optimized and renders much faster.
• A lot of bugs have been crushed, and hopefully not too many introduced. If you spot one, don't hesitate to report it at support@getchord.com.
With all these new features, the app is more complex, but an extended documentation can now be found at http://getchord.com/support/.
Please note that Dropbox sync was implemented and working but Dropbox has announced that they will make modifications which would have broken sync for the app in a few months. Dropbox sync is thus still planned but postponed to a next release.

Been using it for a few years now, can't fault it!
Now if we could get a Mac version with dropbox and Wi-Fi syncing I'd be over the moon 🌑

Brilliant App

The interface is bizarre in places. You often can't figure out how to do something. It's unlike anything you've used.... but you'll FORGIVE every one of those things when you realize how this app works. It constructs and manages chords and scales in the most versatile way I've ever seen. It doesn't just have chord and scale charts but it will "construct" chords and scales dynamically according to your playing and harmonizing needs. Kudos to the developer for going way beyond what anybody else has, plus giving you a good songbook so you can build songs using these wonderful tools, right inside the app. Be patient with it, and you'll be rewarded.

Well done!

Been using this for a week now, love it. Yes a bit of a learning curve (30 minutes to fully explore and get the hang of it), like any good tool. I've been making song sheets for the boys, you can fully customize output and save your templates, all elements on a page can be sized and margins and fonts adjusted. Sync over the cloud between devices... Had a few questions, the developer got back to me quickly. All in all this is worth more than the asking price.

Amazing useful full featured app

If you don't feel like taking the time to learn an app, then download something else. If you want to take the time to learn everything this app has to offer, you are in for a treat.
My favorite option on here is the ability to open tabs up from the Ultimate Guitar Tabs app with the click of a button(literally) and have it copied into the songbook. Then be able to add and edit it.
I love this app and haven't even discovered half of what it can do. I would of paid double the price.

I had spent years writing all my tabs in a paper notebook. That thing was like 200 pages long, but since I've tried this app, I've never gone back to the paper version.

The best I've seen

Thank you for this app. I am a long time guitarist and guitar teacher, I have used many if not all of the chord tab etc apps out there and this is by far the best currently. I really appreciate it!!
Yes it takes some initial work to learn the app and navigate, but that's because it is packing a ton of useful features in there. Spend some time copy pasting with the songbook section alone and you will ditch the UG pop up ads for good.
Would love a desktop version to sync with too!

Bloated

Had this app a while, I really liked the earlier versions, but the addition of songs, and not being able to hide the songs section from main screen really spoiled it for me. Wish we could configure the main screen and hide stuff we don't use to reduce clutter. Good scales and chords app, but I'm looking for something simpler without all the stuff I don't use in the way.

Original review:
This app is incredible! I've finally found an app that lets me easily add chords to songs. This is gonna be a lifesaver.

Gets better each time I use it

There is a lot too this app and a bit of a learning curve, but I seem to find a new way to use it every time. It does the basics you would expect in a chord app like showing you fingering variations, reverse chord lookup or key transposition. But there are also some unique features that help with figuring out or creating sings -- you can enter a partial list of chords and it will figure out all the potential scales,keys and modes that harmonize. Has helped a lot with me learning more about theory and understanding the fretboard better.

Deep but difficult to navigate

This app is very deep, which would get it a solid 5 stars if it were more intuitive to navigate. But the Byzantine nature of its design makes it "frustratingly deep" rather than "simply incredible."
So while I reluctantly recommend it, it's not for those looking for a fast easy reference tool.

One of the best apps I have ever used

Great app. Take any song with the chords in it, cut and paste, clean up with edit and the fingerize. Bam, your done. You are able to get any fingering of any chord you want, change one chord or change them all. This is one app I would never be without.

Over rated, difficult to use

I paid good money for this based on the reviews and I find it totally useless. Yes it has every possible chord you can dream of, but it's way too difficult to get to them, list them or use them in a song. When you finally do manage to put them in a list it may show as note relationships rather than a chord. Huh. It has a myriad of useless features and none of them are easy to do. It requires way too many steps to do anything. Way too many menus and different kinds of lists. Overkill on menus and very lacking in ease of use. I just spent 20 minutes pressing buttons to put a small group of chords in a pallet. Then I look and it's not even chord symbols in the pallet - it's note relationships. Oh that's probably another needless setting I didn't know about and I'm not going to waste my time doing it again! It's super difficult to add chords to a song or do anything relating to actually making music. Every thing this app does requires way too many steps. Not intuitive. Not easy to do anything. If you want to spend hours geeking out on your phone to chord symbols, you'll love it. If you want something the will help you actually play the guitar, this isn't going to help. Actually after trying about every chord app available, they are all terrible and this one is probably better than the others. Great on details, terrible on usability.

There is a reason the ratings are high

This is money well spent. It’s incredible how much the app provides. Be ready for a bit of a learning curve. That is not a criticism. The app is incredibly full.
I had a question on accessing something on the iPad. The developer responded with the answer in under 20 minutes. YMMV - but so many apps have no support. This isn’t one of them.

The best chord app, period.

The pictures don't quite show it, but there is no other app quite like this. This is the only truly modular chord finder. You do not pick from a preset list of chords, you build your own with the harmonic qualities YOU want. You can build and find chords that other apps don't even consider. The results are dynamically generated. This is the only chord app that thinks for itself. Beautiful interface and excellent features.

Nice but chord and tuning history doesn't work

History really doesn't work at all for chords, tunings too. Always just shows empty list and "search for something" - and for scales, that do show history, I have to favorite them for them to show up.
Reverse chord lookup pls come back!
And would be better with a feature to find scales by inputting a chord progression. No other app can do this except Octavian (kind of)

Please Fix Reverse Chord Search

Please bring back the old version of "Reverse Search" for Chords!!!!! The update has made it far less helpful. I loved how you could tap a note and hear it immediately and then swipe to play the full chord. That was such an awesome feature! Now, I have to input the note and press a button to play the chord... Thanks for the update!

At last this app is living up to the promise of a truly professional tool. For example, trying to find the correct chords in DADGAD to accurately store Kashmir was just about impossible, now doable and fairly easily. Keep up the good work, there is still progress to be made in simplifying the user interface, and I know you are up to the challenge! I'm giving five stars to express the wide scope of improvements represented in this update, the program is moving much closer to becoming my only transcribing tool. I have been playing Guitar and programming and working in the computer industry for about the same length of time, since 1982, and am still amazed when I see something I never dreamed would come during my lifetime suddenly arrive on my iPad!

This is THE Update

After having this app for a few years now, I've noticed some drawbacks that hindered the use of what could have been an awesome app. This update addresses basically all of those drawbacks from before and is now a near perfect app. The addition of fingerings for scales and arpeggios are the ones I'm most excited about. Elegant UI, Immense Content, Simply Fantastic!

As a long time player, I was looking for something that could help my theory understanding expand as well as provide reference for modes over squirrelly chords. The app is brilliant in it's simplicity, controls, presentation and logic. I'm rarely deeply impressed, but this is truly a world class treasure that is now on all my iOS devices. While it does not offer any deep treatise on theory, the linkages between the cords, their harmonics and scalar modes, provides all the necessary substance with no filler. No long winded blathering, just the facts (all easy to find, thoughtfully related and cross referenced) Thank you for offering such a fantastic, easy to use, artistically thoughtful app!

Best Guitar App!

This app is very customizable, and it looks good too!
I mostly just use it to look up chords, and it's worth it to me just for that feature, but it has a lot of other features to.
I really like to play with the different voices that it generates. It always throws me chord shapes I'd never considered!
I especially like that the chords are generated based on your tuning, so no matter what crazy tuning you are in, you can still find the chord you need right away. Most other chord resources are E standard or s.o.l.
Also, the developer is constantly improving little things to make it all the more easy to use.

GET THIS, NOW!

I have been playing guitar for about 8 years and I use this app all of the time. It makes for an exceptional reference tool and is worth every penny I paid for it. The app has a great flow and feel to it and the interface is very pleasing visually and functionally. There really isn't anything quite like this app on the App Store. Though this app may not be the greatest for beginners, I still say that this app is a MUST HAVE for ANY guitar player, regardless of skill level, mostly because of its ability to generate tons of chord voicings in whatever tuning you're using. Pretty good but has potential to be great.

Very good app but there are a couple things I wish it had. For writing songs I wish it had a tab style document. Also the reverse chord lookup does not work as well as I thought it would. Then lastly, I wish it had more descriptions on what makes a key of a song and what 5, 7, and 9 mean. This is not the greatest for beginners/mediocre players. Overall great app for reference and more advanced players.

Incredible Update

This is an amazing update to an already amazing app. I especially love the new songwriter feature, iPad compatibility, and iCloud sync!
This is the best reference app I have ever used for guitar and many other stringed instruments! It is packed with features and beautifully designed and executed. The way the app calculates chords and scales instead of storing an image for each one opens it up to so many possibilities, from quick chord analysis to reverse searches (inputting the notes you're playing to find out what chord it is). I am not a stringed instrument player, they have confounded me for decades (honestly it's a cognitive disconnect). But with this tool I finally feel in command. I tell it what I want to play and how I want to play it and it shows me how to accomplish that goal. I tell it that I want to see what that song would look like on a completely different instrument or tuning and it shows me... Fantastic. The app itself is deep and complex and could benefit from some simplification in the UI. If I had not been someone who has been using computers for music since the 80s I might have been a bit more lost. As it turned out, I still found it challenging. The developer needs better documentation and a good set of how to movies right away. To avoid people getting frustrated. I did have a problem with the app not showing me common fingerings of basic mandolin and ukulele chords but I emailed the developer and got a response that was honest and clear the same day. I am confident he is actively working on this project and dedicated to making it better.
Good thing too, because it is great. If this had been available 30 years ago I would be calling myself a string player today.

tried the rest, this is the best

Awesome app. Best of its kind for any device. Much better than GuitarToolkit, recommend it to every musician I play with. Great developer support too, love that this is one of the first apps to be updated for my 6+!!

This app has everything.

This app has been a big leap forward for me in my guitar, mandolin, and ukelele playing. It has every scale, chord, and tuning you could want on most stringed instruments that you could want. I have found this app incredibly useful and worth the money.

The best gets better with tagging and iPad support

It's superb for scales, chords on guitar and bass. Others instruments are included, like banjo, and you can customize your own tunings as well.
My favorite feature of the new update is the customizable tagging that allows you to organize favorites for multiple instruments and practice situations. It looks great on an iPad now too where you'll really see the benefits of the new songbook feature. I'm impressed to see iCloud storage now too.
I contacted the developer for support on the last version and he was great to talk with. This is one of the good guys in the app development world.
The only problem I had with the update is that the import of my old tunings crashed and I lost them, but there were so many new features and refinements that it was easy for me to enter them again. Take note of your customizations before enabling iCloud, but overall it is a huge update that's totally worth a little re-entry.

Chord, great app !

I now you did the update but it's overall fantastic but with we want to make our own chord and broke them up ? We should be able to be able to put them on the song . Not all chords that we used or want to use are there . So it would be good if we made our own chords for songs . It would help . Thanks

Really solid and well done!!

Like a lot of people I have bought many scale and chord apps. They have all been useful and I've learned a great deal from them. This app really brings together the best combination of musical utility and interface usability. The layout is very intuitive and shows that a lot of time and attention was put into its design. The charts and diagrams are clean and readable. There are many options for viewing both chords and scales and the sound is very good. I have just gotten started with the app so I will have more to say about it but so far this is definitely my first choice for studying chords and scales.

Amazing app!

This app is amazing! I've tried countless other chord apps but they were somewhat limited because there were only a few different types of chords, and a couple of tunings. With this app, I can recreate virtually any type of stringed instrument I want, and generate any chord or scale I need in real time! This app actually uses an algorithm to create chords, and then can display interactive statistics and virtual models of any given chord. This is a must have for any guitarist who likes to experiment with different tunings!

My Must Have Guitar Companion!

I cannot say enough good things about “Chord!”. There is always something of wonderful use in this app whether you’re looking for a particular chord fingering or you just need to reference a specific scale. The “Settings” sections of this app make it a 4 star app all by themselves!
The only thing not in “Chord!” is a metronome but I don’t feel that one is needed.

Wonderful way to learn scales and chords!

This by far is the best way to learn scales an chords on a mobile device. There are so many apps out there that try to do this but Chord! does it right and does it the best! There are so many great and well thought out features that make this app a joy to use and learn from.

Amazing

I can't believe how great this app is more than I dreamed it would be after reading the description worth way more than the $5 you pay for it. Highly suggest this together with Jamn for songwriters to make rearranging and transposing a much quicker process! Love it!

Wow!

In two minutes of checking out this app I can see how cool this is going to be. I love the fact that you can play and hear the chords as you change the voicing. Pretty intuitive to use.

Brilliant!

The one negative reviewer on here doesn't seem to understand just what this app is doing. This is far more than a limited static database of shapes and way more impressive than any other chord app you're going to find on the App Store. This is like Wolfram Alpha for stringed instruments. If you need an F#11sus2add6 chord, this app will find 85 different ways to play it. If you need to know which chords work for a Eb Neapolitan Minor scale (or hundreds of other scales in any key) this app will find it... On the fly. It won't clutter up your phone with silly pre-made images of chord shapes. The possibilities for customization are astounding. Intervals, finger span, and on and on... This one is a mind-boggler. Well worth it if you're serious about exploring musical possibilities. I use it mainly for the ukulele, which is a very limiting instrument, but this app gets the job done... Every time.

Grimoire in an app

If you're looking for an app with few (if any) restrictions on instrument type (as long as it has a fretboard) or tuning, that answers about any scale, mode, chord, or fingering question, looks great, and features a well thought-out UI, you've found it.
In a word...phenomenal.

Amazing

I really love the ability to reverse find chords and scales. You just tell it what your playing and it tells you what it is. Once you know what it is, it will tell you what other scales and chords would sound good with it.

Powerful, but UI too complicated

Seriously, it's a little unnecessarily difficult to use.
And I wonder where to bring up the piano keyboard like in one of the screenshots? I've searched everywhere and still can't find it.
Overall it's a massively powerful app that needs some minor UI tweaks to make things work faster

Serious musicians: this one's for you.

This app encompasses what expensive books and lessons teach you over time in just a few taps. I was blown away with the attention to detail and the plethora of information this little $5 tool brings. Any musician that is serious about improving should have this app. You'll find out what a Dmaj9(no.3) looks like and sounds like, as well as more ways of how to play it as you move along the neck. An invaluable tool to any person who wants to truly understand their craft. 5 stars!

Complicated.

I agree that this app is amazing, but to beginner guitarists/musicians, the chord/scale searching can be very complicated. It is also a bit laggy at some points. I do know it is the first version, so I expect great updates from them as they made an excellent start.

Finally!

At last! A simple to use yet powerful chord & scale app. Any tuning you want. Capo at any fret. Reverse lookup of chords or scales. Harmonization. I love this app! The only improvement I would like to see would be an iPad specific version utilizing the bigger screen.

Thanks!

This app is quite seriously the answer to many prayers. It covers a number of more 'obscure' scales, particularly Carnatic and Hindustani modes that are so immensely useful, all in an interface that is incredibly simple, clean, and beautiful. This app is worth at least 5 times as much for all the information it packs in such a wonderful format. Good work!

About time.

I have been waiting over a year for a good chord app for my iPhone. This is exactly what I've been looking for and I've tried with other apps but its never been just right.
This app was exactly right.
