Are the apps that I used to help the Korean and quickly lost focus, lost interest with this app. Definitely keeps me motivated. It’s so interactive that I want to keep going. I absolutely love it.

Loving this experience

I’v been at this for five months now and I am loving the experience and really feel like I learning the the complete package, speaking, reading and writing. I previously studied with Duolingo, pimseulure, and Rosetta Stone, none of them can do what Rocket Language has to offer.

Could be great. In the end, it's wretched (for Portuguese)

I have to change my previous review. This app has so much potential but they ruin it in so many ways. First, relying almost exclusively on Paulo, the man with a distinct Rio accent, to teach pronunciation is ludicrous. They have a special section devoted to the Rio accent, that should be enough. Let the main lessons be taught by someone who speaks with a more standard Brazilian accent, not one unique to one specific city. So stupid. Second, half the time they teach you how to pronounce words, they don't even pronounce them in a Portuguese way at all. For instance, if they are teaching a phrase with the word "de" in it, the first several times, if not more than that, they pronounce it the Spanish with, with the hard "d", rather than the distinct Portuguese way with that kind of English j sound to it. That's just one of many, many examples like this. And finally, their voice recognition software is absolutely abysmal. I can pronounce a word correctly and it says I say something completely different. Then I can say something absolutely incorrectly, and I know it, and it tells me I'm right. Great concept, this app, but terrible execution.

I would like to give them more stars

But after using this for a week I have asked for my money back. This is the only app in the iPhone universe that doesn't understand spoken language without a headphone -- according to them. But I know they ACTUALLY have a huge enormous programming bug that is the REAL problem -- it's not a headphone problem, it's your app doesn't understand numbers in Spanish. The app has many sections where you are supposed to be reciting the phrase back. Anytime a number is involved in that phrase, instead of spelling out the number, the app writes a number and then tells you you're wrong even though it's the correct number, it's just not spelled out -- and I have no control over that aspect of the app. It is the app that is not properly spelling numbers out and uses numerals instead. That is not going to be resolved with the headphones they keep pushing. Headphones are not a resolution to a programming bug. they should also be unnecessary for any well programmed application. I have used at least a dozen Spanish-speaking apps and not a single one of them had any trouble understanding a single word I said. I pronounce Spanish extremely well. I've been studying it for many years and I'm just trying to get it together for a trip. And the app knows I'm pronouncing the words correctly because it's not saying I'm not -- the only thing it doesn't understand is numbers and that's because it has a bug!! Furthermore, while it started out great, they all of a sudden leaped ahead and instead of building on the previous lessons they started doing brand new lessons that have nothing to do with anything you learned previously, do not build on the previous lesson in anyway shape or form, and leave you so frustrated with 100 new vocabulary words in one lousy little lesson that you do what I do -- you demand your money back. It's ridiculous. Bottom line, in my experience the majority of other countries do not know how to program anything properly. That is definitely an American specialty.

Voice Recognition Needs Work

Course is good, but the voice recognition isn’t great. It often gives you a 100% when you’ve clearly pronounced it wrong and there are way too many, “Sorry, didn’t catch that…” responses. There are also issues with -es ending pronunciations in French.

Really great compared to others

The biggest issue I have with this app is the comprehension when speaking back in the French version. It takes often several tries for the app to identify correctly what I am repeating, though its identical to the woman speaking. Shorter words tend to be the worst, with longer ones being picked up easily. Possibly this is because of throat sounds or rolls, as well as dropped letters/silent letters.
Aside from this moderately frustrating aspect, I really like the straight forward structure compared to Rosetta Stone, DuoLingo or Babbel, where I feel are almost childish interactive games and don’t use real word phrases and interactions as quickly. I retain the information better with this app. Really glad I found it. It was reviewed as the top French language learning app by several YouTubers which is how I found it.

Great explanations of German grammar

Along with the easy grammar explanations are examples to clarify the oft difficult and somewhat illogical words for understanding German. The everyday sayings are a bonus to learn how original German speakers use the phrases that are not literally translated. Only one concern is that the sound of words is too fast and slurred. While knowing that may be how a German speaker may sound to their buddy, it does not help learning and repeating the words and phrases.
Update one month later: I raised the stars to five. I was using Babbel at the same time as Rocket. However, Babble went from ease of learning to over the top of difficulty and speech that was so fast it became impossible to understand. ROCKET has maintains a decent pace for beginner students of German and is increasing the difficulty as the learner becomes more proficient. The grammar explanations are top notch. I now use Rocket exclusively as my online language training.

Works exactly as advertised

I have been very happy with Rocket Spanish. I am currently learning subjunctive and the app allows you to go “down a rabbit hole when you want too.” This type of learning is fun (for the most part) and trusting the process of any Spanish program is key. No program is perfect with how it teaches but after using many apps, this is among the best! It is a little harder at the beginning and I used Pimsleur and duo-lingo first. My review is based on that but I am not sure it matters.

Good, but needs improvement.

I’m learning ASL and there’s a big issue that I’m having. The signers are signing way too fast for beginners. I put the playback speed on .5 and it doesn’t help much. This is a huge problem for people who are trying to learn sign language for the first time.
The lessons are too lazy to show new words after a while and just ‘refer to the dictionary.’
Those are all of the issues I’m having.

Best of the best …

It’s comprehensive. It takes familiar Spanish sentences and creates opportunities of learning to say them in different ways. Rocket is offering many new ways to speak from the very beginning! Spelling tests are great not super easy just right and many ways to test yourself. In fact I am going to continue to practice the first lesson because I didn’t get everything absorbed into my memory. When I do I’ll move forward. I’m still racking up points while I go over the material so
I’m getting reinforcement to learn the material not just rush forward to collect points. It is excellent and like I said the best of the best!!!

NOT FOR YOU IF YOU DON’T ALREADY SPEAK SPANISH

This was clearly designed for someone who was raised around Spanish, or is immersed in Spanish in their daily lives. I learned the hard way why you pay for the whole thing, upfront and not by the month. It is so frustrating and difficult that I deeply regret this purchase. I use Duolingo every single day, and study Spanish outside of rocket Spanish every single day. But I only attempt to use rocket Spanish when I have 10 to 12 uninterrupted hours to complete each one hour lesson. It is all negative feedback and frustration. I really really hate rocket Spanish but I’m using it because I bought the whole program.

Confuses even native speakers

I purchased rocket Hindi to help me study along with my Hindi course. However, within the first few modules, I noticed inconsistent grammar like “you” being placed at the end of the sentence (kaise hain aap) rather than at the beginning where it belongs (aap kaise hain). They also use words that are hardly used in India, or by native speakers at all, which they tell you, however skip what would typically be said. While there are many great elements, I would not say that this alone will teach you to speak and be understood by locals.

The best language app out there

While other apps like Duolingo can teach you a ton of vocab, Rocket Language gets you to have conversations in another language right away. Everything is something useful that you will definitely need to know how to say or talk about: making small talk about the weather, talking about what you did last weekend, ordering food, asking for help with things.
It’s an actual class that you can take whenever you want to! Can’t recommend this enough. Seriously so good.

Good start but the voice recognition is hit or miss

I’ve been using the app for a while now and enjoy it. I do wish the following:
- voice recognition seems to be hit or miss, especially with some of the (for Americans anyway) harder sounds like /r/.
- I’m learning large lists of unconnected vocabulary which is, I suppose, part of the introductory lessons, but why not teach pronunciation as part of actual conversations? I appreciate knowing how to say “frog” and “owl,” but surely more useful words could be taught in conversations and pronunciation could follow more naturally.

Rocket Languages App glitches

I love rocket languages as a learning tool. But this app is frustrating. Every time I try to practice a conversation by playing one character or the other, the auto-scroll scrolls past the lines I’m supposed to read. And I can manually scroll back to the appropriate lines unless I hit stop which terminates the practice in the first place. I mean this is a great premise for an app but it’s just glitching so much that I can’t use it as intended which blows. I wish this would get fixed so that this app could reach its full potential.

Single syllable words listen and repeat/write exercises are a bit wonky

I’m enjoying most aspects of this app. But when it asks you to listen to and repeat single syllable words with no context (in a sentence), sometimes I have to just guess because there can be various words with very similar or the same pronunciation. Maybe a fill in the blank would work better and test the same thing but with a better result.

Finally something great for Russian!!!

I did Babel for Russian for a year, and got to the end of it. After that I tried Duolingo and Rosetta Stone, neither which explained what was going on. I am going into this understanding a little already, but I am liking the format so far! The audio feedback is also much better than Rosetta, very on par with Babel. This seems to have a lot more to it than the other language apps. I think for a difficult language with so many different rules than a lot of the love languages, this is for sure the way to go!

New version on August 16, 2023 very disruptive.

I find the new version disruptive to my learning process. The speaking lectures, are in a much different order. I need to hunt to find previous similar lessons. Furthermore the moderator does not have as much enthusiasm as your previous moderator. I also find the male actor in this new version seems to mumble. Whereas the previous male actor was much clearer. All in all I rate the new version poor.

Better than Duolingo!

It is only my second day on rocket language (Japanese if you were wondering)but I had already Learned basic greetings that I didn’t learn in my first 100 days of Duolingo! While the lessons are considerably longer, they contain much more information and the words I’m learning would actually be useful in Japan. Conversational Competence

I’ve used a few different language learning apps. Rocket language is the best I’ve found at becoming conversational. I used Duo Lingo for over a year and couldn’t carry on a simple relevant conversation. One day after walking through the first few lessons in Rocket, I was already initiating simple exchanges. The app isn’t gamified and it could use more grammar instruction, but if you stick with the audio lessons and exercises, you’ll get results. Not any one app will get you fluent, but Rocket Language will give you the basics to launch you into having conversations around certain subjects and expanding your competency from there.

The desktop version is better, missing key feature

One of my favorite features of the desktop version is unfortunately missing from the app. This is when you record your voice and you are able to play back your audio recording! I always replay my recordings as well as the one I am trying to emulate to see how closely I match up and whether I am saying it correctly. I often re-record my sample even though it says it is 100% correct until I am happy with my accent and feel that it sounds like the native’s sample. Unfortunately, the app does not allow this, you can re-record your attempt as many times as you like but you can never hear it played back to you. Developers, please add this feature, I believe many people would benefit from its inclusion!

Very disappointed

I purchased the lifetime Brazilian Portuguese package. I was expecting a lot more to come with this. There should be more audio lessons teaching you more on how to structure your sentences. This needs more vocabulary, conjunctions, word breakdowns, more repetition exercises etc.. I’ve been learning different languages for years and this doesn’t really teach you much. This doesn’t even teach you how to be intermediate. It’s basically a bunch of basic phrases and responses you have to memorize. If you go out in public using these phrases, it may be helpful in some spots. But it’s not going to get you far if you want to have an intermediate conversation with a native speaker. I really wanted to like this, I went through the entire course. But I’m very disappointed and unhappy.

Gets you thinking

Might not make you fluent alone but certainly has the potential to. I especially appreciate the fact that it explains almost every word and particle that you come through in a detailed matter. With that being said, I strongly believe and have experienced that if you use both duolingo and this app together, your language skills improve drastically. Duolingo may be more attention getting or fun to play, but this app speeds through bigger words and vocabulary much faster and more efficiently. If you don’t wish to use these two together, I highly recommend using multiple language apps regularly, because usually one isn’t going to cut it. Certain apps may focus on different things, so using multiple is like getting a taste if all aspects of Japanese language. I do, however, recommend this app for it’s usefulness- Rocket Japanese has units for all factors for surviving life in Japan- (Ex: Eating at a restaurant and how you might order or approach staff.) I also appreciate the use of voices explaining the different words- dialogue unique to each unit, as well as in the “quiz” section, the app sometimes explains the different multiple choice options and how they are wrong or tight after you have selected your answer. In all honesty, best language app I’ve used so far.

Using for German. Better than Babbel for me. Structured. Lots of reinforcement in different forms. My only complaint is that the pronunciation feature is buggy. A meaningful number of times, the "play" button doesn't work. When repeating phrases, it is not uncommon for the voice recognition app to give a score of 75% even though the word or phrase has been enunciated perfectly. This is not pride on my part. I was born and raised in Egypt and can form all of the glottal and palatal sounds necessary to pronounce Arabic words. I have had others compare my pronunciation to that of the speaker and they have agreed that, for the most part, my enunciation is correct.
The voice recognition application also often displays numbers that have been spoken as numbers not words.

Audio learning needs improvement

At one point, fairly early on in the Egyptian Arabic lessons, they choose speed over teaching. In an effort to make the lessons shorter they sacrifice quality and teachable moments. They go too fast, repeat less and don’t tell the opposite sex version of all words. I would prefer 5 extra minutes on the lesson instead of this quick mess that’s happening now. If you’re like me and need a course that is more audio learning, this is not the course for you. There aren’t enough audio lessons. I only have time while I am driving to work, two hours a day, and to get the most out of this app, you would need to sit in front of your screen and do all the lessons.

The new version is awesome!

I purchased Rocket Languages many years back to learn Spanish but was not impressed. It seemed very clunky and did not have many features that are needed to properly learn a new language. Fast forward to 2023 and what a change. Great interactive lessons including role playing allowing you to practice your pronunciation, flash cards, quizzes, writing lessons and more. This is now way better than many of the top rated language programs there is.

Active Friendly

Rocket uses conversations to teach vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation. I had subscribed years ago and hardly used the program. I recently opened the app and I was able to access the program again with no extra charge! I am enjoying the active learning with repetition and even writing and culture. I wonder if there is a recommended story book to go with this great program?

Mi piace molto

I was hesitant to buy Rocket Italian because I was already using Duolingo for free for the past 5 years. It took one conversation with an Italian teacher on line for me to realize I needed to practice speaking and build confidence before talking to an Italian. That’s where Rocket Italian comes in. It helps you practice speaking in a easy environment where there’s no pressure. I absolutely recommend it to anybody that has a basic knowledge, or has been on the Duolingo track. I’m finding those small differences in tone and pronunciation make a huge difference and Rocket Italian, through the practice sessions, really really helps.

Pretty good so far

I’ve only gotten through the first section so far, but the software is helpful for early practice and understanding. There continue to be some problems with voice recognition that are frustrating, e.g., some phrases and words that the program will never give me credit for, despite being 100% for all other words ands phrases. As the lessons progress, I hope there will also be more focus on vocabulary definitions and grammar, which are required to move beyond rote memorization.

The next step

I picked up rocket Spanish after spending several months of semi-rigorous learning on Duolingo (like a lot of people I imagine). I realized my vocabulary was growing but when I tried to speak with friends I would freeze. After researching the different apps I found that rocket Spanish was recommended for those looking specifically to improve their speaking skills.
I’ve now completed all of level 1 and and am working through level 2 and I have to agree this app has definitely improved my speaking tremendously. Will this app make you fluent? No, no single app will. But it will make you make you much more confident to actually use the language you’re learning. I really like the emphasis it places on practical application and useful phrases that you are likely to need in your day to day.
I still supplement with grammar exercises to drill down the conjugation rules and often reference resources like SpanishDict. But if you want to go from speaking no Spanish to actually engaging in conversations I’d highly recommend Rocket. When it finally clicked and the words came out naturally without me even thinking of the conjugation, I knew it deserved a review.

Well structured

I like the way it progresses through the lessons. New words and phrases are well introduced before you are quizzed on them.
My only complaint is the voice recognition is sometimes spotty. I have a new Ipad and it makes no difference whether I use the built in microphone or my earbuds. Rocket fails to register what i am saying, even for simple words. The practice sessions where you respond in a conversation doesn’t have a consistent prompt for when you should respond.
Overall it is the best tool i have tried.

The best language app

I really like that the app does NOT give you an almost random a la carte bunch of choices on how to proceed through its course (like some apps do, thinking that this is a good thing). I like that there is a clean path through the course. Each step includes a short dialog followed by sections on vocabulary and pronunciation, phrase flashcards, listening and speaking exercises on the phrases, and reading and writing them. I like how the voice recognition is integrated into the app and how the dialog playback speed can be adjusted. Also, the user interface contains many thoughtful and quite useful touches, e.g., annotations for number, gender, and formality. The sync with the webapp version is perfect, too, which is much appreciated when I would rather be on my laptop. Overall, the developers of this app show a desire to make this the best language learning app; something I have not seen in other apps.

Comprehensive, but could be better.

I like Rocket Spanish much better than Plimseur, but like most Spanish instruction it misses an opportunity to reinforce the syntax, structure, word order, and idioms of the language. They will often put a literal translation of the Spanish as a footnote, whereas if the more literal translation was the default to begin with (and I realize that it can never be exactly literal or linear) over time it would be easier to “think” in Spanish. In essence, we have to translate twice: once from the English structure and idioms to the Spanish structure and idioms and then to the Spanish words. On the plus side, Rocket Spanish seems quite comprehensive and relevant, providing context as well as translations. I also appreciate that there are a variety of exercises to reinforce and check what you learn from the dialogues: flash cards, opportunity to check your pronunciation, writing, and quizzes to check your understanding. Overall, I am very happy with Rocket.

Stick with it

Review for the Japanese course: It starts off really slow in the introductory lesson and then hits 100 super fast. The conversation audio lessons are the main test within the lessons. While there is vocabulary you’re gonna be learning whole sentences. Grammar etc has its own lesson. For some people not knowing the why of grammar and stuff will be hard to manage. I think it’s a good system though. Learn the sentences, really understand them later. If I needed to ask to use the bathroom, I wouldn’t need to know why the grammar was where it was I would just need to know the sounds and work from there. This isn’t my first Japanese learning app but it’s definitely been the most effective at getting me speaking Japanese well.

High quality instruction

I recently started this and it quite effective. Actually, haven’t yet completed a course at a local French school. That one has been good bit it doesn’t rate so well because of inadequate reinforcement so no sooner will you learn something then you’ll soon have forgotten. It doesn’t even matter that this school provides a French ambiance there. All those goodies won’t count for much if you simply can’t retain enough.

Good intensions, bad program

I have used this for about a week now and the mic just stopped working. I love the app and the audio lessons, but if I can’t learn if I’m saying it right with the mic, then how can I learn to say it right? Rocket, please fix the mic problem! I have read through the reviews and the mic problem has been around for a while. Please fix the app! I love learning Spanish, but I “learned” with Duolingo, and that had no mic lessons to learn to say it right so I learned to say it wrong! Please fix the mic problem! I don’t care if you shut down the app for a day just fix it!

Great!!!

I’ve always wanted to go to Japan and feel responsible to therefore learn the language there, regardless as to if the residents speak the same language as me. This app makes me feel as if I’m actually getting somewhere with in the process of (hopefully) being able to speak fluently. I highly recommend this app to those who wish to learn new languages if they plan to travel, make new friends, or indulge just for the heck of it.

The best for learning German

I have tried the paid versions of almost all of the popular apps out there for learning German and I can say that this one is the best. It is very systematic, comprehensive, free of errors, addresses the idiosyncrasies of the German language and most importantly, forces you to speak. I wish I had found it earlier and didn’t waste my time and money with the other apps.
The only feature that I wish Rocket Languages had is some sort of a spaced repetition tool that reminds you to repeat words and phrases that you find difficult. Other than this, the app, the method for teaching German and the quality of the content are just perfect. I am using the app both on my phone while driving (to listen to the lessons) and on my iPad to do the exercises. Transition from one device to another is seamless. I have not tried the desktop version.
I live in Germany and this app has already helped me tremendously to speak with a lot more confidence than before. Thank you and keep up the good work!

Good with minor issues

I am seeing many complaints about the technology. My experience is that, if you have good hardware and stable internet, the app works most of the time. The voice recognition sometimes doesn’t work on some words, and you just have to move on. Don’t get stuck on them. I would like to see(hear) more accurate pronunciation demonstrations. For example the French word parler is demonstrated as parlee. This is wrong and can be confusing for new students. I had similar issues with the German version too. I wish the Rocket team would proof-hear their demonstrations and make corrections. Google’s pronunciation demonstrations are more accurate.

Testing

I have written reviews before about Rocket languages. I get frustrated with the soundex, when I say something and it reads something clear off the wall, sounds I know I didn’t make, but then again I have a lot of background noise, and I have a heavy case on my iPad. Between the music and machines I sometimes can’t hear myself. Taking the tests over and over especially helps me hear and write, making the new sentences stick better. Some one I know moved to Mexico and said that Rocket Spanish really gave them a leg up when they got there. So I still recommend Rocket languages.

Overall a good experience, but web platform is better

I really like the course, but using the program via the web browser is a much better experience because I am able to playback the recordings of my pronunciation and try again as necessary. I find that I’m often getting a 100% on my pronunciation when I know it’s not perfect, but I can’t hear myself to make any corrections. I will continue to use the app, but for the speaking portions of the tutorials, will do those on the web browser. If voice playback was enabled via the app, it would be flawless.

Not a cohesive experience

I travel a lot so I need apps that work across all platforms. I started learning Spanish on my MBA then had to stop midway through a lesson. When I got to the airport I opened the app on my iPad, while it recognized that I had earned 20 points, and what lesson I was on, it required me to start the lesson over again, I didn't. When I got to the hotel I opened it up in my MBA and found that it remembered exactly where I left off and could resume. It should do the same regardless of the platform.
The other issue is that the app doesn't work the same everywhere. On the MBA (in Safari, no actual app) I can see the textual conversation along with the audio, on my iPad I only have the audio available, no text. I don't like this either, it should work the same across all platforms.
I will not be purchasing the lessons but will look at programs from other companies. Shame, what I experienced on my Mac was good.

A bit different

I’m finding the Rocket approach (at least to the Russian language, Русский язык,) to be a bit strange … but maybe in a good way?
1. It doesn’t teach you the alphabet, or any grammar — at least, not in the first few lessons that I’ve completed.
2. Everything — and I mean everything — is presented *in context*, in a natural-speaker’s conversation with another natural-speaker.
3. Each lesson includes a collection of slightly-different-approach study tools: listen to this, select the right word. Listen to this, repeat the word and see if your phone recognizes it. Read this word out loud. It all feels very, very slow and thorough.
I can’t say for sure, as I’m definitely a beginner; but it certainly *feels* like Rocket Russian deserves its “you’ll move slowly but learn thoroughly” reputation.

If only

I truly like this program especially after trying — probably never hard enough —to learn German. For the most part, it is easy to work through each lesson. I appreciate the various approaches to teaching new concepts. If I have any singular problem it is with the young woman who reads roughly 50% of the words or phrases. She speeds through each term in a more or less monotone which makes learning pronunciation at times virtually impossible. (This is not the case with the male speaker who enunciates clearly though at times he, too, tends to speed up to a clip impossible for beginners to catch the proper phrasing). As others have also noted, the microphone is often bulky, for lack of a better term, so that feedback is too often confused.
But Rocket German is teaching me the language and that’s what I purchased it to do. I just wish the spoken materials were as clear as the written.

The app just simply doesn’t work

This is a review in the app store for their app, not the language learning system.
The app audio doesn’t work in many areas of Rocket Spanish. I have reached out to support and got an email back a day later with a lot of questions, however, based on other app reviews they are aware of the problem and not fixing it.
Rocket Spanish! is the best language learning system I have used hands down, however their app is broken.
If you choose to make the substantial monetary investment in Rocket Languages, plan on using the web browser and having internet access... you wont be able to download the lessons.

Disappointed

The first week or so, everything worked amazingly. Things drastically went down hill from there. The audio does not work at all. I reached out to customer service and they told me to reinstall the app but they were pretty dismissive with my issues. I reinstalled the app and there is still no audio. How are you supposed to learn when you can’t hear how a word is pronounced?
The next thing is the audio recognition. Again, first week it went great. After that, I can no longer use this feature. This was another issue I brought to their attention and they told me that feature is not compatible. It worked fine when I first got it. Even on their website, the audio and the microphone do not work.
This has been a huge waste of money. The bugs completely make the program useless and the customer service is severely lacking. If they ever get these issues fix, it would be fantastic. I was learning Japanese very quickly with this for that first week but it has now been 5 months since I’ve been able to use it. I keep checking regularly to see if they’ve fixed the issues, because like I said, this would be a fantastic program.

Parlo Italiano un po’

I’m using this to learn Italian and I’ve found the flashcard and repetitive exercise very helpful to actually remember, and be able to use, my new vocabulary. I was using Duolingo but I prefer the structure of Rocket language. It feels more similar to learning a language in a classroom which has always worked well for me. I still use Duolingo to test myself and further expand my vocabulary. I have run into a few bugs with the speech recognition but usually if I restart the app everything works again.

Solid concept, buggy execution

I was expecting great things from this program. It was enthusiastically given a great review by travel bloggers I really enjoy. I’m a retired programmer, so I have used many programs, both simple and sophisticated. I was very impressed with what I saw upon installation, however, execution was flawed and buggy. Mic kept cutting out, cutting off before two syllables of a phrase or sentence could be uttered. Pronunciation scoring was off, for the same reason, and I could neither use the keyboard completely or get some onscreen choices to register. I struggled to complete the first series of lessons, despite delete and reinstall. I wrote to tech support, and was encouraged to delete and reinstall again and again. My hardware and operating system was very up to date. Sadly, I’ve deleted the app for now, and went back to Duolingo which works well, but bores me. I have talked to others who’ve had the exact same experience.
Please get this software sorted, you have a fabulous concept, but the execution needs to be much more reliable.

Pretty good...when it works

I like using the Rocket Spanish app. I’m learning things I wasn’t taught in similar apps. But it’s also kind of infuriating because of one defect in particular. There are certain lessons where the audio for certain phrases simply won't play! When I press the play arrow next to the phrase, it blinks for a second like it’s gonna play, but then nothing happens. And more importantly this happens anytime the phrase appears in any of the quizzes at the end of the lesson. Anytime any one of those phrases appears I just have to skip it because it’s impossible to respond correctly without hearing the audio. I sent an email to the company about this, but I’ve heard nothing back. Oh, and there’s another bug that I noticed recently. In the quizzes there’s an area for you to type your answer. In a recent update the background of this area and the color of the text are now both white, which means you can’t even see what you’re typing anymore!

So far so MUCH BETTER! Très bien!

I’ve used Rosetta Stone dueling memrise... etc etc. So far rocket language is my favorite I love that it’s comprehensive and a one time purchase. Now days language learning tools like Rosetta Stone are on a subscription bases. Other apps at great but this one is truly comprehensive, grammar and vocabulary during the lessons. You don’t have to stop your day to complete them as they are audio lessons. The only thing that gets annoying is that during the listening reenforcement portion the app hast to be closed and reopened. It save progress so it’s not a big deal but this minor bug fix would be nice.

What I was missing

I have been learning Spanish for 4 years. In those four years I have amassed a large vocabulary, but was not able to put that vocabulary into sentences to clearly be understood. I’ve been using this app for 2 weeks and I’m feeling more confident in speaking because this app teaches you how to communicate with sentences. When I first downloaded the app, I was able to use the mic and role play play with the characters. Since the latest update, that feature no longer works, and the ‘write it’ section won’t allow me to see what I’m typing. Those two issues made me give it a four star rating. It’s a hassle for me to wait till I’m home to use my computer for the lessons. Hoping this will be fixed soon.

Great French course but...

...the app has a sound bug that is very annoying!
If you play your class then go out of the app and come back to either continue playing the class you were in or play another class, there will be no sound. I constantly have to reboot my iphone (turn it completely off then on) then go back into the app in order for the sound to work. I also have had sound issues just playing different parts of a class. The sound will be barely audible, then suddenly it will be at a higher, normal range, then go back down. Pain in the you know what! All that being said, I like the courses very much! I would’ve given it 5 stars if it wasn’t for the annoying sound issue!

Very Buggy App

I do like the Rocket Languages learning method. I own all three levels of the Spanish product, and the lessons are very good. There is a lot of opportunity for listening, speaking, and repetition. Unfortunately, the app is extremely buggy. I have had countless issues with speech recognition, with force closing, and with my progress not being tracked. I contacted support via email about the most pressing issue, and they did not respond at all. I could not recommend this app or this company. I’ll try to work with it for another couple of weeks, but if it hasn’t improved I’m going to request a refund. The language learning space is too competitive to tolerate this for long. I hope the developer is listening because this could really be a great product if it was more reliable and they were more responsive.

Crashes when using earbuds

My main problem with the app is that I can’t use certain functions, such as practicing my pronunciation, when using earbuds. The app crashes every single time. I bought the premium for the language I’m learning so I think this should be fixed quickly and efficiently.
My second issue is with the interactive audio. I find myself wanting to reverse certain parts that I didn’t quite understand but the app will not let me. So if what I wanted to go over again was at the end of 25 minute audio I would have to listen to the WHOLE thing just for that small part!
Aside from these two issues I really enjoy using the app! I think it has a great set up that makes learning a new language much easier!

Good service, but problems with mobile app

I use Rocket through my local library. I signed up and have found the courses pretty interesting. It's much more focused on real speech/listening than DuoLingo, which gave me a good start in reading French but pretty poor listening/speaking skills.
I can't figure out where to report bugs but I'm having some pretty frustrating issues with the microphone. It gets into a bad state where it claims it can't hear anything, and all speaking lessons stop working. Force closing and restarting can sometimes work to wake it back up. But I can't even get through the quizzes at the end of the first lesson without hitting this. I don't have the same issue on the website, so I hope they fix this soon.

Jury still out

The most important aspect of a language program is whether or not it guides you towards learning a language. In perhaps 4-5 weeks of use, I feel Rocket Languages is accomplishing that goal.
I like the lesson variety. They typically begin with 20ish minute audio exchanges, followed by lessons involving listen and repeat using speech recognition, listen and write, read and speak, etc. Combining hearing, seeing, speaking, and writing at least for me help to reinforce the learning process.
By far the worst aspect of the app is the plethora of bugs. As mentioned in at least one other review, the speech recognition software often has difficulty understanding you and the problem worsens the longer you use the app for a given sitting. Often it reaches a point where the moment you press the microphone to speak you receive an immediate disclaimer that the app is sorry but it didn’t understand you, failing to provide any time whatsoever to actually attempt to speak. Deleting and reloading the app clears things up for a bit, but the problem always returns. It’s also not uncommon to see other bugs related to missing words, sentences, or translations as you work through a given lesson.
I’m making progress leaning Spanish, but the app issues certainly have hindered my progress to a degree, and that’s disappointing.

Love {most} of it

I bought all three levels for Japanese and so far I am loving this so much more than the other programs I have purchased. While I love the content in the program I am not a huge fan of the male narrator for Japanese. There are times when his comments to his female co-host seem condescending and I am not sure if that is all pre-scripted or if that is his personality.
I adore the speech recognition however it seems to be hit or miss on whether it works even when I am at home on WiFi. Some days it works without a hitch other days it works for some testing activities and not others while other days it just doesn’t work at all.

Purchased levels 1, 2, 3.

Really like this product! The introductory video is all you need to get the ball rolling. You are comped a couple of modules for each of the 3 levels so you get hands on practice before you buy. Cool.
It has a nice instruction pattern where you:
1. Listen to the lesson and practice a little
Next:
1. Hear and repeat words/phrases from lesson
2. Hear and spell words/phrases
3. Read the English and translate to Spanish
4. A 5 question comprehension quiz follows
Finally:
You recite the lesson four times, with progressively less clues, for each of the roles.
I started using the flash cards and like the way you can group them for review, especially the ones you keep missing. I like to go back after I have completed each lesson and solidify my knowledge of the new phrases.
There are a few hiccups with the voice recognition, to be sure, but it's great practice that helps build confidence.
BTW, you can't purchase levels 2 or 3 from the iPhone at this time, you need to go online. I got confused but the folks at Rocket helped me sort it out :-)
I have done over 10 languages with Pimsleur, but was really disappointed with their Spanish. I felt like it was too stylized; I hadn't heard anyone speak Spanish like that. I went through DuoLingo but wanted something more. For me Rocket is taking my Spanish to the next level.

Not friendly user interface

I like the lessons a lot and am learning quickly. However the app is pretty annoying. Many quirky bugs it seems. Annoying things like when I leave and return, it always opens up to the 1st lesson vs the one I'm currently on. The voice recognition seems to work the first few times, but then gets sluggish and eventually what I say is garbage.
I just found out the mobile web version that you see when you log in through your browser is much better than the app. I didn't even know there was an "Advanced Learning Techniques" section... it doesn't appear in the iPhone app! They must be behind on the iphone app development.
