I've played this for six months, love,love this game. Try it,you'll get hooked!

Now it's two years later...and I'm still hooked on this fast paced game.

I love this game. I had been playing for months and had accumulated some good stats. Then the app was unintentionally and unknowingly deleted from my phone. It was still available on my ipad which gave me hope, but even though all my local matches were still there I couldn't access my internet matches no matter what I tried. I added it back to my phone, but I could not retain my user name, games, or stats....as my old one was "already in use". I tried everything, over and over with no luck. Sadly, I started over with a new user name... If my old one is still "in use" why can't I get my access back along with all my history???

Well, we've waited over 7 mins for the player to switch in a two player online game! Boring waste of time. Better to go back to the board game.

Should be instant switch and allow players on same network not just the internet.

Playing against the computer is better.

The game works great though the computer sure plays obscure words sometimes 😋

Mostly with a friend in New Mexico that I've friended over the years while playing. Now I rarely play anyone else and she writes me letters about how my hometown (Bronx NY) was in the "old days".

Like it better than Scrabble.

I love that an unexpected opportunity can emerge up to the last move. Also like the chat within the app.

Enjoyable and challenging, Upwards is a little on the sneaky side b/c of adding or taking away letters and other ways to trick you. Wish it had a "shuffle" feature.

My favorite word game hands down, but I do have a suggestion. I wish the game kept records of all of my games....how many wins and losses, etc, highest score, etc.

Challenging and fun. If your partner is quick to take their turn, even better. Games can finish pretty quickly for a game like this, which adds to the charm. For me, at least.

We played this game as a board game for quite a few years and loved it. When it came out as an app, it prompted my wife to get a smartphone which she thought was unnecessary until then. Now we can play almost anywhere anytime which is a lot of fun. No more boring waiting times, even an elevator ride is a chance to make a move or two. Chat function is both fun and useful. The game operates very smoothly on our phones and tablets. While using electronics a lot can cause less real contact with people, this actually improved our social life.

Thanks to developers for free game. Playing against computer I've seen lots more of the letters s, f, w than in orig game and fewer a's and e's so I gave it a 4 instead of a 5. Computer also seems to play like a scrabble player. Those who love UPwords for the ability to cover tiles, esp corners, will know what I mean. Long words just tend to hog the board and make building UP more difficult. I don't like scrabble but I do like Upwords. If you are an aficionado like me, you might want to consider the upgrade. Otherwise, acknowledge that it's a great free game and just close the ads when they appear. Use the time to plan your next move as the computer moves pretty quickly- or it apologizes for "thinking...

I really want to upgrade to remove ads because I play enough to justify the purchase; HOWEVER, $4 is entirely too expensive for this very basic game. I need bells and whistles for $4, and you don't even get all of the perks of this app for that price. Tack on another $2 to add the "word glow" feature that shows valid words when placing tiles. No thanks.

So really, Lonely Star? $6? Unfortunately, your name might spell out your future. You've got a star of a game, but you'll end up lonely if you expect us to pay that kind of money for this app.

More ads than ever before! Even to play just one letter you are subjected to at least two ads, and most likely a video ad that you have to wait to dismiss. Throughout the life of 1 single game you'll have seen hundreds of ads!

Video ads, pop up ads, timed ads, ads that open in safari, banner ads.

When I end up with all consonants or all vowels for 6 or 7 turns in a row, I have to wonder what's going on. This happens a lot. And when you can only swap a single tile then get the same tile?

Whoever wrote the program for this game should be ashamed; it ignores the rules on which the original game was based.

The developers got every detail down. It's like playing with my family in the 1980s.

The game itself, with its added dimension, puts an extra spin on Scrabble / Words with Friends etc. Lots o' fun. And I'm enjoying playing my friends online.

The built-in dictionary is often astonishing in what it accepts — and what it doesn't. But I prefer being refereed than refereeing.

Nice game, I like that you have the option for multiple players, and can play against the computer as well.

Going from Scrabble to this and back again takes some focus.

Not only is the upgrade too expensive, there are soooooo many ads it's just frustrating and annoying. I love it, but I'm not paying that and will quit when the ads drive me nuts!

I found this after I started playing words with friends and this quickly became my favorite game. Fun and challenging, it keeps you thinking.

I love the free version of UpWords! I can play multiple games at once, and am quickly paired with a random online opponent. No complaints!

What happened to letting people play free if you want to? One star for the frustration and not being able to play a full game without interruption. I understand that ads are going to exist when playing a "free" version, but forcing people to buy the app out of frustration is just wrong. You can't even play a full game without ads just popping open on you, forcing you to either see the ad or forcibly x out the ad, so you can resume the game. I even had a video pop up and had to wait seconds before I could even skip it. I got so frustrated, that I stopped the game to write this review. Rather than force someone to buy your app, do like other developers do, and allow us to play the game without interruption and let us decide we like it enough to upgrade. All you did for me was make me delete the app, because I will never support this app as long as there are pop up videos and ads that don't remain in their place unless you want to click on them yourself. No one else does this. The ads are there if you want to click on them and create a slight distraction if you want it to be. However, you are still able to enjoy the game to the point of liking it enough to want to buy. I couldn't even get through an entire game, and the frustration did not make me purchase to rid myself of the ads, it made me write this review in hopes that you will get the message and offer the game for free, for real. I will not play this game or upgrade it for this reason, your the purpose for me, backfired. I hope you change it and allow others to enjoy the game and decide at that time to upgrade. I've done this many times with free games, but this is absolutely ridiculous.

What a fun game. I'm a word game enthusiast and this is by far the most enjoyable. Highly recommended for thinking players.

I really enjoy this game but I *hate* the ads that pop up in the middle of it. Unlike most apps, it costs $3.99 to remove the ads! 😤 That's absolutely ridiculous, especially because you don't get the useful upgrade that shows valid words (that's an additional $1.99!). I can't give it the 5 stars it deserves because of the cost. It's not like Hasbro doesn't have a ton of money...

My favorite word game on my iPhone, genius.

Wish the screen was larger to allow for longer words - as it is with the hands-on version. There also seems to be a shortage of some letters, particularly "t ".

The opponents occasionally get a much higher percentage of the letters "s" and "e" which makes it far more challenging.

I love this game. It's addictive, and my game buddies are very quick to respond, so I'm playing a few times a day. More fun than Word with Friends.

Love this game. I've been playing it for years as a board game. This is a great game. However, I get irritated with the computer for playing words that no dictionary has in it. You should stick to the scrabble dictionary. What is URAEI. I couldn't find it anywhere. This is just one of many words that the computer has played that can't be found.

I like this much better than Scrabble and other word games available. However, the workings of UPWORDS leaves much to be desired. Too often the play doesn't score and the screen saves it's moving the play then it says it timed out leaving PASS as the only option. After that it says it's resetting the game board and that may time out. And it's frustrating. This last game I played I was behind my competition when the power behind the game gave me three plays in a row with no plays for the competition. Finally, everything made a big switch and we ended back where we started. Wasted a lot of time. I still like UPWORDS but I wish I didn't get these convoluted problems

I first started with the free option. It was enjoyable to play an old favorite board game again. However, I got tired of the ads and decided it was worth it to purchase the full ad free version. I'm glad I did. We like to play the game when we travel on the airplane (airplane mode) on the "Local Matches", as well as having running "Online" games with my sister who lives in another state. It's great 'cause it has a chat feature that keeps us connected in a more personal way.

I have been playing Upwords for years on a game board, laptop, and now my IPhone. I have the 6s plus which helps because of its size. I have had no problems at all with Upwords free. I did finally pay the $3.99 or something for it to be ad free because the ads became annoying.

I really enjoy playing this game, it makes you think. The only caveat is, playing the free version against those who've updated and gotten the advantage of the word checker. I think the playing field should somehow be leveled. Maybe only those with similar game features should be paired up to play. Just something to consider...

I play 'real' Upwords, but it's sometimes hard to find partners. So, I play it on my iPad. Love it, but hate my computerized opponent 'Eve' though when she comes up with such weird (non human) words. But it always stays interesting. Wish it had a 'games won/lost' table.

Ads are not too annoying.

This was my new fav game until I see someone say there is something called glow word...a bit of a cheat probably, like Words With Friends which was so blatant. I just had no enjoyment after knowing most opponents were use a cheat app...so available. Deleted WWF and play 100 games at a time with Grabby Word. Love that game!! New to Upwords this week and find you have to rethink the way you play because there is no value to the letters like Q, Z, J, X. Now they are like albatrosses. Play them as soon as you can and get rid of them. I am playing 20 games here, but need much more concentration for each opponent.

It is fun and keeps my brain in gear. Try Grabby Words if you are reading this!

I play solo most of the time to observe how the developers think the game should be played. I also don't want to have to wait for a friend to play. Solo is quick. Once I start a game I have to keep playing until it is over. There are multiple levels of difficulty available when playing with "solo". I have worked my way up to playing with Eliott. I am winning most of the time now, so will move up soon.

Love this game, it's so much fun and runs flawlessly. I love it so much I bought it so now i don't have to watch those ads any more. Once you download the free version, when you open up the app you can go and buy a paid version. O forget how much it was, maybe $4(?) and so worth the cost. Then there is another feature you can buy, a Glow Word feature which I bought and highly recommend. The first 4 random people the app matched me with are really nice people, none of us quit early if we are loosing, just have found this game attracts nice ppl. I'm still playing with them. I get 4 games going at the same time with the same person so that makes it fun, rather than just playing one board, then wait for your opponent, to play. If you have multiple games with the same person, even though they may not be on line at the same time you have multiple boards to play while you wait their turn. I like Up Words a lot better than Words with Friends. It is a more fun game.

I dislike it very much that a square can only be played five times. I think it would be better to cap the point value of a square at five but allow it to be played if there is an available opportunity to create a new word. It really takes a lot of the fun out of the game when a square has been played five times and won't accept any more tiles. If this restriction were removed the game would be way more fun.

I started playing this game with my family on vacation last summer and we are all still hooked. Yes there are pop up ads after you play a word but it's not a big deal. You can pay if you don't want the pop ups. It never bothers me.

This app is awful. Trying to log in to even start a game was an exercise in circular logic. "Log in via Facebook. Log in. Pick a nickname. Enter. Prompt to log in again. Log in again. Get message, you're already logged in." Do this 5 times. Finally pick a nickname the game accepts, not that the app tells you anything good or bad about your nickname until it's accepted. Still somehow no friends from Facebook. Send email challenge. Counter part receives it but can't "find me" in the game. Try again to find via Facebook. Nope. What an awful app. I though Words with Friends was bad. This makes that game look great.

Love this so much more than traditional scrabble. Fun and creative thinking. Always loved the board game. Now addicted to this one. Agree with others a dictionary would be great, but at least if you try to submit your answer it will tell you what was/wasn't accepted.

This game needs a dictionary. Scrabble has one and many other games that I play have it. This would help us know the definition and it would make playing this game so much easier. I would be happy to pay for this added feature. Please think about incorporating a dictionary in this game. D I C T I O N A R Y!

Love this game! Fun with friends or alone. Easy to take a break and resume as schedules require. The adjustable computer player settings prevent discouragement or provide an excellent challenge. The ad interruptions are distracting, but provide an additional type of a brain concentration building challenge! Well designed, well played!

If you like the board game, you'll like this version since it stays true to the game.

I have a few negative thoughts about this app:

1. the ads between moves that pop up are getting more annoying (videos, ads in other languages, etc) and the dismissal button moves all over the place.

2. I wish you could zoom in a bit more.

3. The point total of a word you're trying out that pops up is tiny and disappears too soon.

4. If you're playing several games, and trying to move to the next game, you'll sometimes hit the pass button.

5. The last update took away the notice that the other player passed without making a move.

6. I paid for an enhancement a while ago to get the stats and I still get popups that were supposed to go away.

Been waiting a long time for this game to become an App. My family has played it as a board game for years. If you are looking to play a word game that has a bit more of a challenge to it than Scrabble or Words with Friends you will find this is a bit more cerebral.

This app is smooth and fast. Play with friends or against the computer (at varying degrees if difficulty) to build your repetoire of words quickly. At first, I found the "words" the computer used far-fetched and frustrating, but have found my cache of words greatly expanded as a result. Enjoy!

Good game. Wish it would allow you to make a move when you challenge someone. You have to wait for them to accept and after they accept, they have to waIt for your first move. This is annoying. I wish the "u" was not connected to the "Q". It would be more fun using the Q and playing over it with words like Qi, Suq, Qintar, Qindar, Qat.

We love this game - play it daily - have started to play online with a relative 800 miles away - we find it incredible how this APP handles the play between two players on two different tablets - congratulations to the programmer for such an outstanding APP!

If others find the ads annoying they can simply eliminate them by paying a very inexpensive charge!

Love this game. Having said that, there are a couple of things that would make it even better. A current dictionary would definitely help...even the two letter words are lacking. Also, would be nice to be able to exchange more than one letter per turn.

I really do like this game a lot. I play with people I know all over the country and I feel connected to them through the game. The only thing that is very annoying are the ads that pop up and the banners on the bottom of the screen. As I am playing my hand keeps hitting the bottom of the screen and I wind up on the internet looking at an ad or a new game. I have to hit cancel and it breaks my concentration. Otherwise a very nice game that stimulates my mind!

Please make it where you can swap multiple tiles at once like you can on words with friends. All of my letters except two were "I"'s in one game. I get too far behind in points if I can only swap one at a time. Also, please make it to where your pic can be one from your photo album. I have no interest in Facebook or signing up to a whole new site just to have a pic of my choice on this one game! I use different avatars on every single site/game. I do not want to use the same one everywhere, so I have no need for gravatar.

My husband and I play everyday. It keeps us in touch when we are apart while giving us a fun word puzzle. We upgraded to the paid version to avoid the ads. My only complaint is the dictionary allows words that aren't in other dictionary's. Otherwise the game syncs well between devices and is keeping our vocabulary sharp.

I am an avid UpWords player, having started on the board game years ago. I'm grateful for having it on my mobile devices, but there are a couple of things that are annoying. Once a play is made or attempted and the message comes on indicating the status, it takes too long for the message to disappear. I also feel there are too many u's, c's, and v's in the line up of "random" letters, more than in the board game.

This is a fun game that you can play with friends and family. It is very similar to scrabble except you can put letters on top of letters that are already on the board. I enjoy this game a lot and would highly recommend to anyone who likes word games.

This little guy has become one of my favorites. You can play by yourself or you can ask other people to play against you. I can see if I had young children still this would be a great way to help them learn to spell better in a fun game. But you don't have to be young to enjoy it--I am in my 60s.

5 stars. Would make it 6 if Hasbro could work on the following.

The billboard hovers into the field of play when a new response is made by an opponent. I have to constantly touch the "not now"option to make it disappear. Better to just turn on a small upper corner icon with count of new responses waiting than require a response every time. Then reduce the count as we respond.

Same when you drop a banner to Submit to confirm and tally the score. It hangs around too long. We often play several rapid fire games so the cutesy displays are speed bumps.

And it is not accepting words we have been using for years on WWF. Suggest using comparably acceptable dictionaries.

Loved the board game and this version is awesome too. I don't have any major problems with it on my iPhone 5s. The only tiny glitch is that when I press the "chat button" sometimes the "type" field doesn't appear. So all I do is press the chat button again and it I can leave a message. Other than that great game! I'm glad there is an app for it!

...for example, I tried to play my turn by adding the letter 's' to a word but was prevented by an alert (you'd have thought I had committed a crime by the red capitalized message glaring from the top of the game board), but conversely, my game partner was able to add an 's' to the end of the word 'true' making it 'trues!' Seriously?! Game is being uninstalled very shortly. These games are supposed to be relaxing and enjoyable, not incite violence by making the player want to throw their device out the nearest window.

1- Love that I can play both sides of a 2 person game by creating a fictional second person or even a third, which makes it even more unlikely I will remember what letters the main character, me, has.

2- love that the numbers on each letter denote how high the stack is.

3- love that the fifth letter in a stack has a colored dot so you can see at a glance.

4- love RECALL to retrieve the letters I am trying out to form a word and LOVE that you add up and show my score so I can find the best place to play.

SUGGEST let me see the scores of the previous games.

I want more statistcs: highest scoring word, highest scoring game, total points earned by each player over all.

Love it because you can make new words on top of old words for higher scores. The tech support is also very fast to respond to your email. I've played this everyday for the past year, and love it! I highly recommend!

So, we've been playing this for what seems like a couple years. Free version works great. It's perfect for two people. We used to play the old board game version years ago, so this is awesome. Works great!!! We have not been able to find a better game app for two to play. Relaxing and there is no rush. We simply love it!!!!!!!

Having been a Words with Friends player, I was very pleased to discover Upwards. I love the three dimensional challenges. My wish list is that it tallied my current word through my whole turn. As it is now, it tallies my play but then the possible points fade away. This often means that I cannot study my options without memorizing what my points are for each potential play.

To me this game is faster, more flexible because you can build words on top of others, gaining higher scores. Love to chat with opponents in other locations. I've discovered many new words by trial and error. Prefer this to other word puzzles like S-------.

I liked playing this as a board game and love playing it as an app! I was a little bored with scrabble and this has added more complexity to playing a word tile game. The only thing that would make it a little more fun is if the computer would act as a player. I play it now to see if I can use all the tiles and beat my best score, but it would be nice to have an opponent put tiles on the board and see what I could do in return. But, still lots of fun.

There is no challenge button! Much of the fun of upwords is challenging other players words! Either people make spelling mistakes or make up words because they have crummy letters and are losing badly so they try to bluff.

If you lose a challenge you either play another word or pass. Thats how the board game is played and is completely missing from this app.

Worse, the app SPELL CHECKS YOU! It doesnt let you put out a misspelled word so you cant even challenge if there was a button.

Horrible version of a great board game. Designers need to read the rules of the actual board game and use those to redesign this app.

I really cant believe that this is an official licensed game because it gets the play of the game so wrong.

Fun game, even though it's not the original board game SKYWORDS.

But the ads are maddening. Same ones over and over. Plus, with some of them you have to hit the X button Many times before it will go away, if At all. Then we have to stop the game, delete it from the bottom of the iPad lineup, then start it up again. Why can't they fix that glitch, at least?

Wish I could play on my pc as well. Wish the oldest game would open automatically when I go to Upwords instead of having to go to Online games to get my lineup. Upwords is great but I'd love to see these tweaks.

Reviewer #2 is not familiar with the rules of the board game. If a player is challenged, he either plays another turn or passes. This is rule #8 in the official game.

I love the game and will love it more when I can also use my pc.

...but the more I play, the more I realize...that whomever goes first, has the LEAST advantage of winning. Scoring is so "limited" that one can only score so high during a turn, and as long as someone has a slight headstart, the rest of the game becomes one of catching up. ...there needs to be more incentives/scoring options than currently avail. This game is just so limited, it feels like a game of tic tac toe, once you get in a certain place, the game is done, regardless of skill. I don't know what would fix this really, but something needs to change.

Please expand to allow droid users to play too.

Messaging also has issues. Sometimes text box to type in doesn't appear on first try and sometimes same message is displayed three times.

Also need built in dictionary or word look up.

I love the game however and the next game feature is nice.

UpWords has arrived! This game is great! The dictionary is very comprehensive and fair. The board is user friendly and the "shuffle" button is super helpful. I like the "next game" button as it makes playing multiple games so easy. I recommend this game to anyone who dares to take word games to the 3rd dimension!

This is SkyWords with a new (and arguably worse-looking) interface. Nothing seems to have changed except the developers have added Hasbro branding and stripped the app of its once uniquely charming UI. The whole app feels rushed and amateurish in comparison to SkyWords. I don't care about branding; I care about gameplay. I already have the paid version of SkyWords. If UpWords is no different than SkyWords, why should I spend more money to switch? I've already got my regular opponents on SkyWords. They would have to switch, too. It just doesn't make sense. There is just no real incentive to use UpWords. Slapping "Hasbro" on the package and swapping the colors isn't enough.
