Description

DR-OM is a virtual synthesizer that simulates the hackable yard sale treasure of the same name. Dozens of DR-OM units have been adapted from a rare, limited science lab function generator that started turning up in flea markets in the 70s.
DIY synth enthusiasts discovered the device was easily hackable, and closely-guarded photocopies of modding schematics have been handed around the community for years. The directions show how to rewire the generator into a nice little synth with two mixable Low Frequency Oscillators and a Voltage-Controlled Filter.
This app is a complete and playable simulation of three different versions of DR-OM boxen that were discovered at a yard sale near Quonset Point along with a folder of photocopied schematics. Each DR-OM unit has its own characteristic sound because of degrading components or bad wiring by the owner. The Speed dial is the most finicky part of the assembly; depending on the box, the dial can cause tuning drifts, random events and gnarly effects.
In the seventies, the noise generator was nicknamed "Doctor Om" for the meditation-friendly tones it generates. Others believe the name is an acronym for Drone Ready Oscillator Module or Dual Recirculating Oscillator Module, but no one knows for certain where the name comes from originally.
Notes for iPad users:
1. You'll probably want to use more than 2 fingers with DR-OM, so try turning off Multitasking Gestures in the General Settings on your iPad.
2. Please check to make sure your side switch is "off" or in your General Settings disable the "Mute" function for the side switch. If your side switch is "on" and set to "Mute," your volume controls will be disabled and DR-OM will not be able to make sound.
This is a universal app for iPhone 4+ and the iPad. It is produced by the Fluxama Group, purveyors of fine simulated synths like Noisemusick. Sound and video samples may be found on the support web site.

If only I could get these sounds to go some-- squeeeeee!

Hey dev(s). You out there? See, just one more thing and DR-OM would be extra perfect. Not AU. I’m fine without that. Just.. presets? Even if you wrote current settings to a plist file that reloaded the app in the state it was last closed in, I would find that enormously useful.
I tried using a sharpie on masking tape, but the tape doesn’t stay stuck to the screen nearly as well as those old die-cast metal cases. That, and I do occasionally use an app that is not DR-OM.
...never hurts to ask, right?
Prior review:
Oh my god they added Audiobus!!! I'm never leaving my room again.
You now get all the stars.
Prior prior review:
I downloaded DR-OM ages ago and every time I open it I lose about four hours of my life. Drones, sweeping drones, pulsing drones, self-oscillating drones on top of drones.. what's not to like?
No Audiobus. No record function. No inter app audio. The workaround--record the iDevice's sound output with something else and then play the resulting samples through something else--is a pain especially when I am trying to create new sounds quickly for fun. Which is of course the best way to get any real work done.
No updates since 2013, though: sorta gives me the feeling that this is as good as it is going to get. If you want to make cool noises, these are some of the coolest if like me you prefer to hang around the low end of audibility. Maybe if we pester the dev(s?) they will update this thing.

Brain Melting Good Times!

I love this developer’s apps. So good. If you’re into noise mangling, bit boogying, or simple mind melting experimenting, this and the other apps he make are worth 10 times the price. Turn on, tune in, and trip out. Yeah!!!

So pleased with the update

Seriously, Dave found a Mu-Tron at a secondhand store, and we took it home with no way of knowing what it was for or how to use it ... We thought it was a distortion box, but instead it was this amazing sound making box. We also found a stuffed cat. With real skin. Bizarre. Anyway, this app totally captures that weird fantastic pleasure of discovery. Get high, or don't, and put your headphones on. This is fun.

Pretty disappointing synth

I was expecting better. The three units all sound basically the same. Controls do not adjust smoothly; notches of gradation are significant. Also the effects so little to change the sound and the mix slider just kind of fades rather than mix. There is noise in the oscillators like compression artifacts. Overall this is pretty lame.

70's WAS GOOD

Great sounds come out of this baby. Definite garage sale, flea market, 70's FEEL TO THIS APP. LUV DEVELOPERS WHO THINK OUTSIDE OF THE BOX AND PUT OFF THE WALL STUFF OUT THERE LIKE THIS APP. JOB WELL DONE.

Pleasantly surprised how good it sounds

Got Noisemusick a while ago and love the glitchy harshness. Finally got versed enough in so many other instruments, I came back around to DR OM and can't believe I passed this up the first time. WOW! What fantastic sounds this app can make...and with careful tweaking of the knobs, this thing is actually playable. Wonderful music. Very anxious to get some recording done with this.
Too bad there is no record and copy/paste functions. Got to give cred for keeping it authentic, though. Now let's see here...how do I turn on the computer and fire up that DAW, AGAIN?...
Two stars off for no AudioBus.

It's a 5 star, but....

Agreement with some other reviews. Great 5 star app, but no Audiobus=no good. I got this because i thought Audiobus was available. So now all it is a noise maker for me. (A very good one).

AUDIOBUS!!??

Awesome app, solid all the way around. But there is an AUDIOBUS issue first thing on opening. Get this fixed and I'll change my star rate to a 5 instead of 1.. People don't think audiobus is a big deal. But when you run your own studio it is a very big deal.

Remarkable!

If this is an accurate representation, or basically a full on replication of the original device (and I have every reason to assume that it is). Well, wow, I find this to be just amazing. What I wouldn't give to be able to get my hands on one of these original Dr-Om's! Of course, knowing next to nothing about repairing electronics such as what I can only assume this would actually be like, found at a Flea Market. Well, I think that would be a huge personal barrier for me, in keeping this beauty even functioning in real life.
But, I am extremely grateful to have such a great approximation of it, to tinker with on my iPad 4, thank you very much for creating and maintaining this application. I also just recently (yesterday) purchased your other bizarre music contraption app, and I love just as much as I do this application, though, I think that I am starting to favor this app for some reason. I would also like to thank for including Audiobus support for both applications. Without that ability to record through Audiobus, well, needless to say that I would be forever frustrated and would have gone insane knowing that I wouldn't be able to record and save my work done in both applications. I can see using recordings from these apps, as something great to use in the app G-Stomper Beat Studio on my Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet and to use it in myriad applications on my iPad 4.
Owning the real version of this device must be like having a true treasure for an audio nut, especially one that would like vintage gear that helped inspire today's sounds and music programs. I would love to see a video of this thing in action, with decent video audio, if you happen to have anything like that recorded. If you do, would you please place a link in the description? I also want to say that I love the graphics and artwork used for this app. I have never seen a DR-Om in person, but I would bet that you did justice with these deceptively slick graphics. Thanks again for this app and the other Noise application. I look forward to any kind of new treats like these two that you might develop in the future, and I really hope that there are more apps of this nature to come. Thanks again and God bless.

in my top 3 apps, PLEASE add audiobus

this app gets used at every show I play, and I love the sounds. the only thing that would be improved is if it could be updated with Audiobus support. being able to run this app through some added filters and echo would make it unstoppable. again, I love it as-is, but Audiobus would make it flawless.

Seriously needs background audio

Man I was stoked for this, I saw it and didn't even hesitate to buy it. Kinda wish I had. The fact that it doesn't have background audio makes this almost worthless . Which is a shame because other than that it's got a heavy potential for awesome. Beyond that, being able to run multiple instances in parallel would make this an 8 star review
