Great idea! Although Very expensive and doesn't always work

Thank you for undertaking this project, it is very convenient. I am able to learn anywhere and can jump from book to book to look up anything I need so I don't have to carry all books with me. I get too many errors, just installed it from scratch and when I start the app I get an error unable to configure. Please fix the bugs
Thank you again!

V4.0.4.1 scrolling very hard to use

The change in scrolling in the latest release makes the iPad version very hard to use. Previously, the screen showed two columns, with text flow from one to the other, then the screen scrolled right/left. Now the screen shows a window on a fraction of two long columns and you scroll vertically.
- the text on the screen at any one time shows two columns that are unrelated to each other. I can't understand how this is useful at all, just a guaranteed loss of screen real estate.
- at the bottom of the page you have to page all the way up just to follow the text, meanwhile, the Rav is 3 lines further on by the time you get there.
One column would be fine.
What you had before was useable
Two columns with text flow between them and a vertical scroll would also work.

Has potential, but it is a terrible app!

It loads very, very slowly. Switching between sections of the siddur is very, very slow. It used to have text fonts you could scale to your eyesight, but when Apple upgraded the iOS months ago it stopped working. ArtScroll said it was Apple's fault and months later still has nit fixed it. Customer service ignores complaints. Do not buy ArtScroll anything! Time to take a stand!

Great tool but please update!!

I love this app but it definitely needs to be kept up-to-date and more optimized. App can use a lot of work, but can be a great resource! Also the prices of everything gets ridiculously expensive really quickly. Should be a system where if you have the actual book there is a code or reduced price for the digital version. I hope developers read this and get more funding to make this app 5 stars!!

Great Siddur!

The Wasserman Siddur has combined the Artscroll Siddur's
familiarity and accepted text and translation with Rusty Brick's amazing internet innovations for all manner of conveniences that assist one's praying.
The only possible complaint could be that it has too much!
But it does not feel cumbersome because of the ease of control to glide from one prayer section to the next and to split a page for side-by-side interlocked Hebrew and English texts.
If the Anshei K'nessess Hagadol (compilers of our prayers) could see this fantastic siddur, they would kvell!

Crashes while you watch your money go down the drain

Multivolume load didn't work on my iPad. Had to download each of the 73 Talmud volumes one at a time which took hours. Now it crashes all the time. Give it a pass until they get the bugs out. Otherwise it's really pretty good but a waste of money right now.

The standard in Talmud and Siddur English translation, however the app needs work.

I use this app on a daily basis for the Siddur and Talmud. The Talmud is expensive but essential. Much credit to ArtScroll for publishing their electronic version of the Talmud, I just hope they continue to develop this application to make it perform much better!.... And publish more of their books!! Also note this app does not allow you to copy and paste text, say for example you wanted to paste an excerpt into a word processor or email. Also the app is extremely slow and unstable in performance on an iPhone 6 so beware of running on anything less…

Packed with features, but cumbersome

Artscroll puts out a great product in book form. I own many siddurim, chumashim, and in print he maras, and I am more than happy with these. I write this review as a fan of Artscroll.
This app feels like an "everything but the kitchen sink approach. Each Sefer has too many options with a complex interface, making using it a chore. The interface should hide in the background, but it feels like an ever-present irritation. This is most noticeable in the new siddur.
With the siddur, there are several delays. First you have to open the Artscroll app, then you have to go to the library to open up the siddur. Then there is an unnecessary lag when changing between sections of davening. You have to wait for Phuket decimal to load after finishing karbonnos. These issues don't occur with the rusty brick siddur which feels more streamlined. If only rusty brick could use the same font and layout as Artscroll. The print is still beautiful. I would love to see the Artscroll siddur as a separate app altogether from the Talmud app. Iwould also like to see the full Artscroll siddur I the app. It is advertised as a full siddur but only contains the weekday davening. There is value in having the Shannon's prayers available as a reference. It would be nice to practice chazzanus from my iPad on the weekdays. There has got to be a ay to shut the app down on Shabbos and Yom Tov, anyway.
In any case, I am still a subscriber to the Artscroll Talmud app, because I know these problems will be fixed with time. The Artscroll Talmud itself is still a wonderful product.

App quitting after last update 10/13

This is an outstanding app with excellent technical support. All the bug reports that I have sent have been answered in less than an hour, including one at 3 am on Sunday.
It is a real pleasure to study the daf yomi with this app and the practicality of having over 200 pounds of gemarot in an iPad and iPhone is priceless.
This app is, in reality, a community effort and only by contributing with the developers it will become a tool that will certainly increase Torah study worldwide. So, once you start using the app, send your suggestions and ideas to the developers.
Having said that, after the last update on 10/13, the app in my iPhone shows the starting page when launched, but then quits.

How can a new release fail to load

Is there no QA happening on the artscroll app? Complete failure to load as of new update. Now I lose my day's learning because I'm reliant on artscroll's attention to detail. It seems that this is detrimental to artscroll's general and well established zchus.

2 Thumbs up!!!!!!!!

Because it has been almost a year and a half since ArtScroll came out, it is very very tiring to hear "we are working on it" The app crashes several times a session. Yellow highlight disappears, needing to close app and reopen, sometimes several times. Claiming that you do not need internet once downloaded, many times, a window opens up, not letting you to continue, because, something related to internet is causing it not to open. An excellent tool for learning, but enough excuses. New update. when it crashes, it now crashes and shuts down the iPad itself. Also, when you advance the text, it stopped automatically advancing when you reach border. Great!!! Every update 2 steps backwards.

Pricey

Too expensive. Especially if you want to purchase the entire shas. And I don't understand how artscroll originally was doing the daf subscription for $6.99 a month and then within a few weeks of releasing the app they raised it to $9.99 a month. If they would've kept it at $6.99 I'm sure much more people would purchased it including myself.

The Perpetual Talmud

The ArtScroll Mesorah Series of Scholarly works of Torah is nothing less then a monumental under taking. With the digital edition of the Talmud, ArtScroll has broken new ground in many ways. Not the least of which is their continued updates to the content. Reinforcing the nature of the ongoing depth that is contained in the Talmud.

Please, keep improving

Thank you for the app, it is very useful for keeping up with the daf, using it during my commute on daily basis. Good job on making recent improvements and new features, I am sure many of them are useful (they certainly would have been useful to me when I was starting to learn, especially statement type marking). Please take a moment to read my review fully and consider making at least some of the suggested improvements.
Unfortunately, most recent update has a very annoying issue with PDF daf display (possibly only when margins are turned off): when going to next page, the new page is sometimes shifted partially off screen and cannot be fully brought into view no matter what I try. I end up having to go back and forth between pages until the PDF page appears normally centered.
A few suggestions that would improve usability:
- remember how and where the view was zoomed in on the PDF when switching back from English only. Same issue with preserving zoom level and location across restarts, the app should remember where I left off. Most of the time I do not use popovers, the app seems to only remember last popover location and bring it up when app is restarted, instead of last actual view.
- preset zoom levels (e.g. for Gemara with Rashi only visible) would be very useful on ipad mini screens
- add bookmarks (with customizable tags or names for bookmarks, although initially, any bookmarking would be useful)
- add note taking (please allow for storing notes in some universally accepted services, like Evernote, Dropbox, etc)
- speed, speed, speed (on an ipad mini the app is quite sluggish)
- updating maseches in the background should not make the app unusable
- going to next or previous page should be as close to instantaneous as possible, as, presumably data can be prefetched
- would have been very nice to have properly typeset (not PDF) tzuras hadaf with proper fonts, as zooming in on PDF results in blurry text, depending on zoom level.
Thank you, and tizku l'mitzvos.

Annoying unskippable popups

In this latest version the powers-that-be in their insulting and paternalistic ways have decided against implementing a working disable option for the Internet warning, and instead have just added an option to disable it for an entire week(!). Thank you so much, our most benevolent overlords!
Instead of figuring out ways how to annoy your paying customers, why don't you work optimizing the program to speed it up so that it doesn't take 15 seconds to turn a page on an iPad 2?
How about giving us an option to disable sponsor pages? Or at least to add back the close button which existed in the early versions.
Review on the prior version:
The annoying internet warning screen cannot be disabled in this version, contrary to what is written in the update details. Seriously Artscroll, can we at least have a grace period so that sponsor popup message only displays once per day and no more?

ArtScroll Digital Library

I just downloaded a few of my mesichtas for the first time to my iPhone (before I was using my iPad mini) WOW! I didn't believe it was possible to do on a phone. I don't even have Retina (I'm using a 3GS), so I don't go below 75%, and this is UNBELIEVABLE. They have outdone themselves. So now even in those situations where it is too inconvenient to carry around even the Mini, I can open up the phone and learn!

Extremely slow

This app is the Slowest app that I have used. Everything takes time to load and It comes in slow motion.
With the latest version they also restricted the use of any background audio, such as a audio shuir or a noise maker.
Additionally, I understand that Artscroll has sponsors, but we are all also paying for the app. There is no reason that every time the app is loading, there is a word about the sponsor for 30 seconds. It's extremely annoying.

Lots of promise but still buggy

Updating my review for version 1.4, now on an iPad 4: Still crashes.
On an ipad-2 with version 1.3 of the app, after 15 minutes I found a bunch of bugs:
- the app crashed a few times.
- looking at the Vilna Hebrew daf only, the popup translations come up a few seconds before the phrase is highlighted in the daf. Confusing.
- looking at the free-flowing text, the popup translations don't come up near the corresponding phrase in the Gemara.
- it needs a setting to permanently hide the acknowledgments and other front-matter. I already have 72 printed volumes with the acknowledgments.
- it needs nikudos in the rashi and tosophos.
- it is too expensive.

Horrible

I figured that even though this was just updated, there would already be some 5-star reviews. This is horrible. It's supposed to be an app for Talmud study, but it's actually more like a video game. Tap anywhere in the Hebrew text page and see what ends up highlighted in some other part of the page. When you tap, an English translation of a line or two might pop up, but then, again, it might not.

Unbelievable!

This app beyond my wildest expectations. Sheer genius! Incredible job! All those who complained about the price should take it easy. It's a fraction of the printed edition price and has much more advantages. $10 a month is less than your daily toll fare to work. And the profits are a zillionfold. 30 gorgeous blatt of Gemara presented and explained clearly and beautifully! What more can you ask for! I'm sure this version made it affordable for people who never considered buying the printed edition. Way to go Artscroll, we're sure this is just the beginning, as amazing as it is!

Needs improvement and more reasonable pricing

Ditto to everything Samuel Skaist said above. Covered everything I had a problem with. Such a mistake with the pricing! Fix the blank page on restart, get rid of sponsor page add bookmark, notes, and lower price. All obvious suggestions. Price per book should be $4.99 at most. You did not offer a discount to the people who spent thousands with you for the printed version and you raised the price of the monthly subscription in less than one month after releasing the app!
There are no guarantees that you won't raise the price again.
Would it have killed you to honor the pricing for existing subscriptions? How many people subscribed at the $6.99 price? Would this loss of income force you out of business or require you to lay off employees? Is it worth the ill will and bad feelings this move created?
People have praised ArtScroll for making learning easier and more accessible to those without a Yeshiva background. I'm beginning to feel I should have spent the last 8 years and thousands of dollars learning to read the original texts.
Thank you for providing the motivation I need for learning how to learn.

Extremely Upset at Price Increase

Why the Price Increase - Just got the following email from itunes
We've been informed that the price of your 1-Month Schottenstein Talmud Digital English Monthly Daf Yomi Subscription subscription has increased from $6.99 to $9.99
This is absolutely disappointing having committed to paying a monthly subscription fee andf then all of a sudden increasing it. What is to stop them from increasing it again in another month. And the month after that. I am sorry but I am upset because they advertised a subscription which would have cost over $600 and now changed it to almost $900. Sound like a bait and switch to me

Excellent App

I am really happy with the whole App experience. Version 1.1 is very stable with only a few small issues. Ability to zoom in and enlarge the commentaries is fantastic, the English side is very easy to use and it's also easy to highlight the Artscroll footnotes. App team is very responsive. Pricing options have become affordable, too. Looking forward to the next release!

Updated version

Truly a wonderful app which will increase the amount of Torah being studied.
Some nitpicking:
1. Please get rid of the obnoxious Internet warning. We've seen it once - that's enough!
2. When using the table of contents to go to the daf hayomi, the volume cover page is displayed. This is annoying. I don't need to be reminded that I'm using the Artscroll app - and it delays getting to the daf.
3. The notes doesn't always open on the right page. Although the correct note is highlighted you need to move to the page.

Artscroll knows how to get it done!!

As I predicted before, the bugs will get fixed and now they are! I have been using this app every day since it was out and have nothing to complain about. Can't wait for the future updates! Kudos to the entire Artscroll team!!!

Fantastic Update

I started using the digital version with the beginning of this cycle and experienced the problems noted by others with navigating between views and especially with viewing the notes.
The update not only fixed the problems, it makes the product even easier to use. Kol hakavod.

Very poor, and costly

I have not written an iTunes review ever, but this app has made me.
Crashes - The application crashes, and occasionally doesn't show any text at all. I constantly have to close the app and restart it, especially when learning along with a shiur from iTunes.
Elucidation - The notes that normally appear at the bottom of a daf in artscroll are really helpful, but occasionally disappear in this app. I have to go to the full Hebrew daf and highlight lines to get the elucidation. But when the elucidation pops up, it sometimes blocks the Rashi. Poor.
Slow - When I try to turn the page, which I can do by simply swiping my finger like I can do in iBooks, it is terribly slow.
Additional Content - This is nothing new. If you have the Gemara in print, there is no need for this app. For one, I am going to wait for the Koren app.
I will say that I am happy that I didn't buy this app. I tried the free sample, and I can safely say that I will not buy anything from Artscroll in iTunes until there are serious upgrades to the software.

Game changer

This app is truly a game changer. I never thought about doing daf yomi. I never thought I could discipline myself to adhere to the rigors of the schedule. This app offers a degree of flexibility, portability, and convenience that the possibility of daf yomi for me is a reality. Even aside from that, the level of explanation allows someone like me, not proficient enough to learn from a traditional shas on his own, to actually achieve a meaningful level of learning. Artscroll you have changed the way people in this generation can learn. Thank you

Setting the Standard

Once again, Artscroll sets the standard, now with its excellent iPad app. The app splendidly brings the same fine quality as the printed editions to the iPad, where text can be easily increased in size, and where text will soon be able to be searched. It's wonderful to imagine a complete Talmud set in one's briefcase. And then, one can hope, the good folks at Artscroll will go on to add the Jerusalem Talmud, the Midrash, and their other fine products. May they go from strength to greater strength!

Needs a lot of Work.

I listen to audio shiurim on my iPad while I read along on the daf. Sometimes I pause the shiur in order to clarify a point or to absorb what the magid shiur has said. Each time you come out of this Artscroll app and enter it again, the 2 title screens are displayed which lasts ~10sec. This might not sound like much time, but there it is hard to keep you concentration on the shiur with the constant redisplay of the title screens. There is no way to restart the shirum and quickly return to the app to continue reading along.
There are also many bugs in the app. For example, when viewing the Hebrew daf, if you do a look hold down of your finger, the app sometimes shows you the English translation in a balloon and other times switches to the only English view.

ui upgrades that would be nice

To make this app 5 star imo there are some tweaks required.
#1 there has to be an option to freeze the hebrew page so moving my finger will highlight the correct area without moving my pages
#2 the highlighting is offline and doesn't show up that much , you should instead of highlighting light up the text that corresponds and black out the rest of the english page?
#3 swipe to change pages is a must!
#4 how do you change between viewing notes on the page?

Truely amaizing

Rusty Brick have once again produced an incredible app. Don't forget this is verison 1. It will only get even better. $10 per month is nothing compared to the work that goes into to producing an app like this.

Incredible App

Artscroll has done a fantastic job with this app. One of the reasons I bought the IPad was in anticipation of this app and I am not disappointed.
The ability to highlight a few words at a time and see the translation with nekudos and notes is invaluable. It also makes the experience of learning Gomorrah much more stream lined.
For all of you complaining about the price/ the fact that you own a hard copy remember that this is a very different product than the physical book. Additionally Artscroll had to do some serious development to produce this app. Also, most consumers are not aware that Artscroll does not actually make much money at all per Sefer. It is very expensive to produce a high quality book. This is a great chance for an organization that has done so much for the Jewish community to financially reap the benefits of their labour.
In short I have been inspired to learn as a result of this app. What more can a Jew want?

Wonderful App that will only get better.

As a Baal Teshuva, I plan to use the iPad version of the Artscroll Talmud for Daf Yomi. It is a wonderful App that will only get better with each update. I have used the Rusty Brick Siddur since it first came out for the iPhone I have been impressed how they have continually improved the Siddur. I expect this will be the same for the Artscroll Talmud.
With iPad version I can study Gamara anywhere, on the way to work, at the office during lunch, at home or at Shul. I highly recommend this App. For all the technology advances that Rusty Brick and Artscroll included in the App, I feel the price is reasonable.
The Notes section both as a Window and below the English/Hebrew text is unstable and buggy. It skips around. It is difficult to recall the note after it leaves the screen. The Notes feature needs work.

Very buggy but promising

I want to love this but it is so buggy. The setting never work in the drop down menu. There is a option to turn off "Elucidation". My assumption is this would turn off all the added or inferred translation but nothing happens. When I turn on to mark sugyas nothing. Perhaps I'm using the app wrong but don't think so.
If they fix the bugs and I can turn off settings like Elucidation in the translation then I'm on board. Until then I'll wait this out for a much needed update.

One of the worst apps I have ever downloaded

Overpriced, slow garbage is the only way to describe this app. Instead of reimagining what the study of Gemara (Talmud) could be on an iPad, artscroll literally took their overly heavy books and stuck them on my iPad unchanged. The only question is why didn't they just put out ebooks. That would probably have been more usable. Anyone who downloads this app should check the free sample before paying for anything so you are not mightily disappointed.

Too Expensive For What You Get!

In general I believe that Artscroll is overpriced. So take what I say with a grain of salt. That being said, I went and purchased a volume (Makkos) because my son is learning it in Yeshiva and I want him to be able to get ready for the upcoming school year while we are away on vacation.
My first complaint is that while they managed to keep in EVERY dedication page and EVERY Haskama page and all the other non Torah material, they seemed to have left out the actual introduction section which gives an outline of what to expect in the Mesechta.
It is referenced to on Daf 2a but nowhere to be found. Seems kind of sloppy to me. Also program crashed a few to times in the first 5 minutes. My recommendation? Wait until they work out the bugs and actually review all the material that is supposed to be in there.
In the mean time you can download ובלכתך בדרך and their HUGE library for FREE. If you really need the English get the Italmud for a fraction of the cost (and you don't have to deal with Artscroll kissing up to all their donors by putting in endless pages of dedications for them ad nauseum).

Amazing features!

I know this is only version 1.0, but I am duly impressed with what this App does. I LOVE that I can stay on the Hebrew page and have the vowel pointed text, the translation, and the notes come up phrase by phrase as I scroll down. Kudos to Artscroll for the interactive development. I expected something more like a PDF of the daf. This is the Gemara on steroids!

Great app, still needs work

Got the app right when it came out, and I've been playing around with it for a few days now. This really is a great thing, and I see how this will revolutionize learning the daf in our digital age. The features are quite useful, and make learning an interactive experience. However, this app still needs work. It still freezes and crashes a little too often, and overall performance needs to be faster. I'm sure these issues will be solved in future updates, so as for now, great job artscroll!

Game changer

The ability to click on a word on the gemorah page and see the translation to me is a game changer. I can now review the daf without the translation and just click a word if I get stuck. I also noticed that I can add the regular artscroll footnotes to the popup in the settings. The app really needs instructions and has bugs, but this first version was really well done.

Great features

Great English only mode, I'm not so great with Hebrew - so I just turned it off. The app was a little slow on startup, but the features definitely made up for it! Looking forward to the new feature updates.
Btw - I discovered that you can switch between Hebrew and English by tapping the book icon at the top of the page.

Wow! amazing

This is by far the greatest app I have ever used. In one night, I was able to understand the Talmud more clearly than I have in my 6 years of Talmud study! Thank you ArtScroll for this amazing app!
