Description

See two-minute introductory video at www.dave256apps.com/attendance2
Attendance2 is a new app from the developer of the original iOS Attendance app. It is a complete rewrite of the app with a new data format to make it more flexible and easier to use.
* Main Features *
Easy to get started with and powerful features you can learn if you need them.
Flexible importing of names from CSV file or your Contacts (videos on website show how to create an import CSV files)
Display photos next to names while taking attendance. Photos can be taken with the device, imported from Dropbox, or from your Photo library.
Statuses (i.e., Absent, Present, etc.) are customizable so you can add your own statuses.
Each day includes a status, a second status, and a generic note field.
Use the second status to track participation points or for dropoff/pickup (more information on website for how to do this).
Manually select status for each person or scan QR or barcode to record a person's attendance status (Attendance2 will create QR codes for you).
Optionally enter course meetings times (i.e., MWF 9AM) so you add your next class time with one tap or manually select meeting time if course does not meet at regular times.
Standard fields for first, middle, last, email, etc. for each person plus 5 custom fields you can optionally use.
Customize which person fields are visible while taking attendance in the Take settings.
Multiple report options (spreadsheet, summary, detailed report) that can be emailed or saved to Dropbox in CSV format.
Reports of students who have missed a specified number of classes to help identify at risk students.
Customize what fields are included in the reports in the Report Settings.
Each course is a separate data file and you can share your data file with teaching assistants or administrators by sending it to them in an email.
Easily backup your data file to Dropbox or via email.
Supports TextExpander touch snippet expansion in various note fields.
* Gestures while taking attendance *
Tap photo to view larger photo or to change the photo.
Tap name to enter the note for that day for the person.
Tap and hold name to view/edit details for a person.
Double tap a name to view summary report of attendance.
Tap and hold status to select status from a list.
Swipe right/left all the way across screen to switch to previous/next date.
* Sharing data between multiple devices or people *
Data cannot be synced between multiple users, but as long as you send the data file back and forth between multiple people and the person using it has the latest copy, mutliple people can take attendance at different times. For example, an instructor could take attendance on MWF, email the data file to his/her TA after class Wednesday and the TA could then take attendance at a recitation section on Thursday and email the updated data file back to the instructor afterwards so the instructor could use it again on Wednesday. The same instructions apply for using it on multiple devices - just share the data (via email or Dropbox) with your other device and make certain the device you're using at the momemnt has the latest copy of the data before you modify the data.
As of version 2.0 of Attendance2, it includes all the major features of the original Attendance app (version 2.0 adds importing from your Contacts). I have a list of requested features and will continue to update the app regularly as I have time to work on it. While I can't promise to add every feature request, if you have a specific request, feel free to email it to me (dave256apps@me.com).
See http://www.dave256apps.com for more information about the app. There are a few videos there showing more information about the app and how to use it.

What's New in Version 5.1

Option to change enrollment status for multiple people by tapping their names. Open your course file, select "Enrollment Changes" and tap names to change them from enrolled to not enrolled (checkmark indicates they are enrolled).
Note: if you use Dropbox you must update Attendance2 before June 2017 as they changed how apps are allowed to work with their service.

Great app, decent UI

Review # 3 --- This app has definitely helped me grow my business. But with that had come another need to share the attendance among multiple coaches. I'd still recommend this app above all the rest, but it would seem fairly simple to add a one button sync to a Dropbox file that could also be shared. Right now the workaround is ridiculously inefficient. Also, for anyone who uses this data to dump to google sheets to process it all, I've found that it's simpler to save the emailed CSV directly to my online server and then link it to auto update on Sheets with the =importdata("URL") formula. Now I can do it all from my phone!
Review # 2 *after update* --- After creating a spreadsheet that filtered everything correctly, this app works perfect. The UI improvement of the header color was a great and needed touch. Once you get to know the app, it's good. Still wish I could've just customized the spreadsheet output, rather than use a series of formulas and several sheets.
Review #1 --- I wish the look and functionality were like the Red Hawk Attendance app. This one is a bit confusing and a tad tedious. Love the customization and calculations. I'd like it even more so if you could customize the exported spreadsheet a bit. My specific want would be to have just the names and the total scores showing. After months worth of classes, that's a lot of data to sort on the horizontal axis of my google doc.
Overall, great app.

Ski Trip - Made Easy

For several years we have been using Attendance to keep track of @ 150 kids on an annual ski trip, among @ 15 chaperones.
The data we use is pretty simple and the formatting is rudimentary (i.e. not flashy) but then information is critical and at finger tips of every chaperone.
On the six hour bus ride to VT we have each kid come to the front and we verify all information and take their picture to add to the file. Having the picture on hand also good for safety, name recognition, etc.

Best I could find but...

I was looking for a simple way to capture attendance AND analyze the captured data. I used the previous app "Attendance" which would let me dump data to DropBox in a form I could be dropped into a database table without too much difficulty. Attendance2 added many nice new features. It really is a great app for most people, but the reporting is not friendly to databases. It takes a lot of effort to convert reports to simple normalized form, which would support data analysis. So, I went back to the old app until I acquired an iPhone 6s, which broke Attendance. Finally, I decided I did not need many bells and whistles and tried using Google sheets and Excel file on DropBox on my phone and then pulling the data down to Excel with ODBC queries. Both methods work great and I get data in neat tables for analysis. So for most of you, I would recommend Attendance2, but if you want to gather data tables for your own analysis, keep looking.

Great App!

I have used this app to take attendance for my select choirs for the past year. Works smoothly to do everything it's supposed to do, and support is great. I emailed the app developer and had a solution to my problem (my error!) incredibly fast. Highly recommended!

This app is beyond amazing!

Seriously the best $5 I've ever spent. Deserves WAY more attention!
I don't know of any other app that allows attendance to be taken with personal QR codes. I just give each high school student a print out, they take a pic of it and scan it each time they come in.
You can even personalize late times, class times, and if you want to email them or their parent on account of an absence.
This app has saved me so much time, whoever developed this is an angel!

Solid, well-considered attendance app

I have been using this app for a number of years, recording attendance for college classes. It is clear that it is designed by someone has to take attendance. I import the student list from the Contacts app, which in turn imports all the student information from a spreadsheet I can get from the University website. Then, among many other functions, I can easily export attendance figures back to the same spreadsheet. It's perfect for me.

Love it!

This app is great! It is versatile for many different needs and could be used in a single classroom or for after school events/activities. The spreadsheet options are great - I’d love to have a few more options, but it does provide quite a few. Dave, the developer is very nice and is responsive to troubleshooting. He helped me figure out a problem I was having in a very timely manner. I appreciate him and his app!

All I could need in an attendance app

Update: The update from Mid-June 2015 used a version of Text Expander that caused it to crash on devices not running iOS 8. I emailed the developer and he responded within hours. The problem is fixed. Imagine that! Communication and patience are more effective than anonymous griping in app store reviews. Hmm.
I have been using this app for 3.5 years, and it continues to get better all the time. My favorite features are that I can add student photos and create random student groups (helps with on-the-fly random seating on test days). It instantly shows me total number of students present and total enrolled. It's easy to pull up each student's individual records. I can keep notes about student contact, too, and email a copy of attendance records to each student directly from the app.
Nearly everything is customizable and automated. I can back up with Dropbox, too.
Best support in the App Store!

Awesome and affordable way for any attendance!

This app is going to make checking in over one hundred students weekly super easy. The QR code generator automation works really well with the auto-generated unique IDs. I had no issues getting it set up. I just wish I could automatically update the student database in the app from the file in dropbox or even better, be able to do that from google drive.

Love the New Version

I last reviewed v. 3.9 with five starts. The new version gets five as well. The new feature of being able to view a graph of the students attendance right on the class attendance screen is great. So if a student has been present half the time, their graph would be half red, half green. Great to see trends at a glance. As always, customer support continues to be great. Everytime I’ve emailed the developer, I’ve received a response within 24 hours.

Touch Responsiveness

Great app, but there is an issue with the newest version whereby the attendance buttons for each student are not responsive; one must tap slightly above the actual green or red color and on the actual word to change the attendance status. at times, I will push several times and the status won't change. I am using an iPhone 5C. The old buttons for this worked favorably to the current version's.

Last date of attendance

Is there anyway you can add an option to see the last date of attendance for a student? Other than that I think this is a really good app. I used it to take attendance this semester and three of my classes.I teach at a community college.
Running:)
Version 4.2
2014-12-16

Good!

4.2 update: The bar graph is amazing. At a glance I can see not only that a student was late once, but a readout of how bad attendance has been. I think even Edward Tufte would approve.
This is better at what it does than a Numbers spreadsheet or any other dedicated attendance app:
1. It is astoundingly easy to take roll.
2. It's also easy to email students individually, and to single out students who have missed class.
3. I count off a certain number of points for tardiness or absence, and the app allows me to set those values and find easy totals.
4. I can randomly select students and assign them to groups quickly.
Essentially, it does what it says on the tin, and it does it far better than the next best option--that's worth at least four stars, right? However, I have a few caveats:
1. Some options seem mutually exclusive, like the "Link with Dropbox" and "Unlink with Dropbox." Don't you need to display only one of those? Even so, the app is complex because it has to be complex--as a cluttered desk is said to be the hallmark of an active mind, I suppose an app cluttered with features is by definition "feature-rich." Certainly it is much closer to doing anything you'd want it to than another app.
2. The attendance status is not aligned with the names. It's not a biggie, just odd.
3. Displays and reports of student attendance data are a little awkward and zoomed out, but there's a button right there, and pinch-to-zoom works.
4. No perfect sync between iPhone and iPad. Hopefully iOS 8’s iCloud improvements will make sync better. Even so, odds are that you're going to use this more on one device than another. Stick with that.

As a teacher I use this app every day. This is a terrific app. I teach at a community college and my students love this way of taking attendance. Use for evacuation

I am safety leader in my building.
I am using the Attendance2 to improve evacuation accounting for 300+ people.
This is required under US OHSA 29 CFR 1910.38 Emergency Action Plans sub-clause c(4)...
An emergency action plan must include at a minimum:
c(4) Procedures to account for all employees after evacuation;
My goal is to get names of the missing in the hands of leadership for notifications in minutes.
To-date companies have written procedures but I think it take a long time, I am one of two volunteer safety leaders for my building.
We are planning on using the Attendance2 to improve evacuation accounting for 300+ people.

Outstanding app!!

The author has provided us access to a truly useful and powerful app. I typically use it on my iPad because I have all my class notes and the text book on that device.
I am using the Status1 and Status2 features fully, and they are very useful. There is a note-taking capability for keeping track of what happened in class as well as individual and dated notes for each student.
There is a small learning curve for the app which is time well-invested. A previous reviewer was carping about the look. I think the look is just fine. It's a utilitarian and stable app created for us by a computer sciences professor who makes but small change selling it. All I care about is that it WORKS. And it works very well.

This is a great app with great service I highly recommend it

When I first wrote a review of this app, it was missing a key feature being able to add students from the contacts. However since that time, the developer added this feature and it is really made this attendance app I think the best one. I downloaded a couple of different apps and this one is robust and had got every different setting that you possibly need to be able to l take attendance of any group you ever wanted to, a classroom of students, a sports team, a church whatever you're doing and the developer, if you ever have a question, you can contact him, he has already contacted me back already three times. If he can help, he will. I don't know this guy personally, but he has been a help. Thanks for a great app.

You Can Tell a Teacher Made This App

I have been using Attendance for years and have told a lot of colleagues about it. It made my record keeping much easier, and the photo option helped me learn my students' names very quickly each semester.
When I realized the new iOS would not support my old version I bought Attendance2, and although the interface is a little different, I already appreciate the new features. Now I can record how much a student has participated in a particular class, I can easily see the "red students" who have been missing classes, and I can indicate if a student left early.
As I was migrating the information from the first weeks of class into this new app, I was having trouble with the reports. I emailed Dave and, this is no lie, he got back to me within five minutes with the solution -- since the semester had already started, I needed to change the date range the reports were covering. Since he is a professor teaching a full load, I would not expect that amazing response time every day, but it happened today.
This app will make your life easier, taking attendance will be unobtrusive, and your students will think you are on the cutting edge of technology.

Amazing app and author

I am a chief medical resident and am tasked with taking attendance of other doctors at conferences. I refuse to sit there and check off boxes. I found this app and it is the perfect replacement. I imported the residents info into the app from my contacts list, created badges with QR tags using the apps QR creating feature. I now watch as residents scan in for attendance. It feels so high tech, looks complex (but isn't really) and everyone participates. I'm very happy with the app and recommend it for anyone who is willing to invest a little time into learning the app. I must say even without scanning the qr badges its quite a good program. The author is very helpful and constantly tweaks the app. Strong recommendation!

A HUGE help!

I am a college instructor, and tried this last fall when I had 4 classes and Mon/Wed/Fri meetings. Before the first class meeting, I imported names from Moodle, and then used an IPad to take a picture of each student the first day. I made up a demo class with pictures of students (Bart Simpson, Harry Potter, etc.) and showed the class how I would be using the app. I strongly believe that my attendance was way up because the students knew I would be watching. I ordered the students by where they usually sit, and taking attendance took no time at all. A great app supported by a responsive developer - this couldn't be better. Thank you Dave!

Love this - helps me be efficient!

I am a Band Director and am using this app every single day for my kids to take attendance! It seriously takes about 15 extra seconds on the students behalf to do my attendance this way! More Than I'd Hoped For

I'm a middle school writing teacher and have been in search of this type of app! Because the attendance fields are customizable, I can change them to meet my needs. I, too, am a college instructor, and I've just recently begun to use the iPad for instructional purposes. Attendance 2

I have been using the first version of Attendance for well over a year and have recommended it highly to colleagues. I wish I could say the same for this new version. The beauty of the original program was simplicity, a streamlined interface and easy to navigate function buttons. The new version is much too complicated and takes more time to navigate the menu. Yes, there are more functions, but I do not want to take the time to search and open up menu items to get to the attendance screen. I am a seasoned user of the original, but now straight-forward tasks like deleting students, for example, requires more trying to figure out the overly extensive menu and opening the individual student record, rather than deleting from the entire list. I am spending too much time navigating the program. The original version is a breeze. I would love to see these functions returned to the new version: buttons at the bottom of the screen with clearly labeled tasks; ability to open a class roster and delete students with a swipe.

Great app!!!

I used the first Attendance app and loved it! This one is shaping up to be even better. My students love having a digital record of their attendance. I like that it takes less time to record attendance grades. My favorite feature is the ability to upload photos, so i can learn names much faster. There are two things that would make this app perfect: 1) View student notes in "Take Attendance" mode, and 2) iCloud integration so I can switch from iPad to iPhone to record late students.

Great classroom tool

Downloaded the app, looked through the FAQ and listened to the help videos. I had my three classes up and running in about fifteen minutes. Our system does not provide pictures easily, but it seems like the app is all set up to use the iPad camera, so I will try that out next week when the students arrive.
Very intuitive and clean. All of the reporting is done with spreadsheet files and email - just what I need.
If you're teaching and need help keeping track of your students, grab this app before the fall semester starts.

Excellent app

I love this app! I rarely write consumer reviews but felt obligated to share my enthusiasm for this program. I've also used the previous version of Attendance and liked it too. I teach four to five courses per semester and enroll about 28 students per class. I took the developers suggestion and required students to upload pictures of themselves to me (sent to my Dropbox account). I include those pictures with students' names on Attendance2, which helps me to learn their names. I easily download my class roster from CourseWeb (save in CSV file) and upload to the Attendance app. This program really helps keep me organized and use and lose less papers. It does take some time to learn the program. However, the web developer has excellent help resources. If you are looking for an attendance app, this is well worth the money. Great app!

Satisfied User

I researched several class attendance app's. Attendance2 is the app I can recommend. The outputs are right on, the transfer of data from Bb is easy, use of Dropbox consistent, importation of pictures files is easy, adding seat organization is a breeze, use of absence counter is great, and the developer listens to your comments and is further improving the app.
A great answer to my problem. I am using this app at a small university. I have 2 classes of 70 and 2 classes of 30. Setup does not take that long. Developer does have online videos which are very instructional. Good support!

Attendance2 - Use for Community Orchestra

I need a way to keep records of attendance for the musicians who play in our local community orchestra. The customization this app allows for seems like it will work out just fine.
We rehearse weekly, and not all members are required to be at every rehearsal. I can "plan ahead" for each of our scheduled rehearsals and pre-fill who is not required to be there.
I'm setting up the "Custom" fields so that I can group members by section (Violin, Viola, Cello, etc.)
We don't start rehearsing again until September, so I'm just making up "dummy data" at this point to see what I can and can't do. It really is a very intuitive app to learn. The video's on the developer's website are very good, too.
