Description

What time is sunset today? Or sunrise tomorrow? When is the "magic hour" next March 20 in Paris? With Sol, you can check times and get reminders of solar events, at home or while traveling! Great for everyone looking to plan activities based on sunlight. Use it to remind you to walk the dog before dark, get up with the sun, or find golden hour time for that perfect photo.
Sol: Sun Clock is the Swiss-army knife of sunlight tools with a design inspired by the simplicity of the sundial. Use it to plan your day, guide natural sleep cycles, get the best light for outdoor photography, make sure animals or kids are safe inside before dark, or to map out the best times to go running or fishing.
* Be in tune: Sol will tell you when the golden hour is, how much sunlight you have left in the day or what time the next sunrise occurs.
* Look to the future, travel around the world: Sol lets you find sunlight information for any date, anywhere on earth.
* Find solar midnight and solar noon, and all three twilight (dawn and dusk) periods: astronomical twilight, nautical twilight, and civil twilight. Keep tabs on the next solstice and equinox.
* Reminders and Alarms: Use Sol as a natural alarm clock that you can set to any event (like sunset, golden hour or solar noon), and the alarm or reminder time will adjust gradually as the days change with the seasons.
* Automatic Location: Sol not only calculates the amount of daylight and sunrise and sunset times, but does so for any location in the world (both Northern and Southern hemispheres) by using your device's GPS... no network connection required.
* Other locations: Optionally, use the built-in map to choose any location in the world by moving the pin, or search using the name of any city.
* Optional location-aware alarms. Sol knows when you change with your location; and as you travel it will adjust any alarms you set relative to sunrise and sunset times. Create alarms for multiple locations around the world.
* Detailed almanac information: Useful information about the day's length, sun's azimuth and elevation, equinoxes and solstices, and a friendly glossary that explains all the terms.
Note: Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life. However, GPS runs in the background ONLY if you have set location-aware alarms.

What's New in Version 4.0.0

The wheel now represents a full solar day for set location, which is not necessarily exactly 24.0 hours. The date bar now shows and sets the solar day for the location, not the clock time, which is shown separately and is independent from the solar day. The Almanac now shows solar day length and sun zenith at solar noon. Days with daylight saving time (DST) transitions will show the time change on the wheel. All known bugs were fixed, including those relating to using the forward and back arrows, daylight savings/summer time issues, and incorrect alarm times and repeat days. iPhone only: The info bar (under the date) now animates new information by default and remembers its state (double-tap to toggle). Very useful and fun

I love this app. I feel more in tune with sun time now.
It would be great to add an option to display solar hours of the day and watches of the night and be able to set alarms for those times as well!

Enjoyable

This app grew on me. I find the graphics compelling but the alerts are why I am writing this. I feel more connected with the day when I know when the sun is rising or when golden hour starts. I used it a lot recently when traveling to help me get adjusted to the new time zone.

Not a Proper Alarm

I bought this app to use as a solar alarm (e.g., to wake up at solar 7 AM rather than 7 AM EST), but the app only lets us set alarms for solar events such as sunrise or golden hour, which makes it barely more functional than Rizon (which does its job much more elegantly than Sol). Very disappointed and wishing I had kept my $4.

Excellent

I really like tracking sun info. And, this app has a great alarm system that offers many powerful options, such as "30 minutes before sunset," which I use all the time in the summer as a reminder to go jogging.

Always Queationing

Love being able to just go on Sol to check when sunrise or sunset is happening. It's easy to know when to go shoot photos during the golden hours. I love its simplicity. But even at that, I wish I knew how to make fuller use of the app. I wish these apps had user guides. Highly recommend it. Enjoy!

Simple yet useful

A surprisingly useful little app. Find solar noon and apply sunblock before you cook. Use it to find the right time to take scenic photos. I imagine there are other uses as well. Simple to use also
2 years later. App is still under active development. The interface has been tweaked a bit to add some polish. Still very good at what it does. Sometimes an app doesn't need to have a million different functions. Simple can be awesome.

ONE OF MY FAVORITE SOLAR APPS / CLOCK

This is very well graphically put together. I like to ability to alarm at twilights, mid-days and nights, rises and sets - and choosing either civil, nautical, astronomical settings, and alerting to golden hours that are superb times for taking pictures!!
I would recommend that they incorporate a lunar app also, along the same conceptual guidelines. There are a lot of apps in this category but none so well as this one.

Highly recommended.

Exactly what I was looking for.

We have hens. They go perch in their coop at sunset. We close them in to keep raccoons from killing them. Go out there too early, and it’s a hassle to talk them into their coop. Go out too late, and a nocturnal varmint might be paying them a deadly visit.
Regular alarms don’t work for this purpose— I needed a sunset alarm and found this as soon as I searched for one. Thank you!

Use it for photography and mountain biking. And all of my photographer friends who recommend this app to have thanked me. half the folks on my mountain biking club use this app too so they don't get caught in the woods without a light. Alarm only works for 4 Days!!??

I have emailed developers about this. In their responds, they said the app stores 5 days of alarms & that is not enough for my phone?? 😶 what ever that means. After 5 days I have to open the app to continue getting alerts. I have a free app that faithfully alerts me every day about sunrise & sunset but does not have sound option (can't pick what sound I hear when alarm goes off).
I have the alarms, so I don't have to open the app every time I want to see when sunrise or sunset is. Besides, all I have to do is look at the widget in the notification screen. They say they are putting out an update soon. The update will determine whether this app stays on my phone or gets deleted.

Awesome app, but bad bug. Please fix!

*note* I'll retract this bad rating once the bug is fixed.
I bought this app a few months ago, and it was great until apple updated the iOS a month or so ago. Now, it crashes when it opens, and gives me around 8 identical notifications for each alert I had set up. But since it crashes when I open it, I can't fix or add new alarms. Please fix! Your app is awesome!

Need true sun-shadow gnomon, please add it

A very useful solar clock, please add true sun-shadow gnomon, a virtual sundial!
The sun-sync alarms helps me go out for a hike or walk at the best times of day.
The only thing missing is an electronic sundial.
A sun-shadow gnomon would make a really useful visual display. The gnomon's shadow would show both the solar azimuth and elevation, dynamically and with elegant simplicity, a graphical indication of the shadow length and orientation for any time during the day.
Please put a gnomon and a shadow in the middle of the circle. The static shadow is misleading.
Also, please let me set any specific sun elevation angle, up to 45 degrees, instead of limiting me to 20 degrees for golden hour. Architectural and nature photographers need this.

turning off the alarm isnt simple.

its not a one swipe turn off. i have to unlock my phone, open the app, and wait for a pop up so that i can tap "ok". even if you just open the app, it will not turn off. nobody else can turn it off if your phone is locked, so my loved ones hate this app more than i do. if you leave your phone, you will come back to a drained battery, and anything important like missed calls are lost in several alarm notifications.

Hopeless app

I tried testing it for sunrise in Oslo, Norway. It came up with 22.12 or 10.12pm! Whether it referred to the local time at mypresent location in the US it did not specify. I wanted a simple way of checking sunset and sunrise. This was a total waste of money! It will be removed from my iPhone immediately. Great App That Needs an Update

This is one of my go to apps. However, it needs to be updated to support higher resolution screens and notifications should be added to cover the alarm issue when the app is not in foreground.

Don't buy if you want alarm and keep phone muted!

This app looks fantastic at first glance! Unfortunately, it does not do what I want it to do. If your phone is muted (or in do not disturb mode), alarms will not sound. On the in-app FAQ they explain that this is because of Apple rules, which every other alarm app I have gotten must be blatantly ignoring. I keep my phone muted at all times and if I were to use this app for my alarm, I would have to switch settings twice a day. Some people may be able to do that, but I am not one of them. At some point, I am bound to forget and miss my alarm or get in trouble for having my phone ring during class.
I wish that they had been transparent about this massive feature gap in the app-store description, especially as this is a pricier app. I would never have purchased if I had known.
If you intend to use this app for other purposes or never mute your phone, go for it!

One of my favorite apps!

I've had and loved this app since I first downloaded it -- which was several years ago. The "Golden" hour light as sunset approaches each day is what I live. Something about the hour centers me, brings me back to reality and makes me feel alive. I lose track of time easily and the next thing I know, it's already getting dark out. Since DL'ing Sol, which gives a really cool 24-hour snapshot of any given day, I have no excuse for missing the sun setting. Thank you to the creators of Sol!

This thing is awesome. Has every detail, it's beautiful, and I absolutely LOVE all the customizable options for the alarms! Just now realized I can zoom in and out on the main view too, so cool! Only suggestion for improvement: I have several alarms setup, and it would be great if I can drag them into a different order, currently it lists in the order I created them and I don't seem to be able to rearrange them in the list. Analemma makers - this is the app for you!

I'm tracing out the path of the sun on my ceiling. I glued a small mirror on the window sill which reflects a bright dot on my ceiling (on sunny days). At solar noon (the sun is directly overhead), thanks to the alarm feature, I am ready with my pencil to mark the dot on the ceiling. Sure enough, the path is the famous Analemma as seen on old globes.

I'm surprised how often I use this app!

I got this app mostly out of curiosity and ended up using it often. Mostly I use it out of curiosity but I've found it helpful with photography too. I travel a lot and the Golden Hour times vary from on location to the next. I use this app to find the best light for outdoor photos. I'd think pro photographers would find this app helpful in planning outdoor shoots - you can forward to the day of the shoot and see that day's time frame for Golden Hour.

Exactly what I needed

This app does what I need it to do. I can set a notification with one of the seven in app sounds or use the system default sound. AND I can include my own label to the notification. AND it allows me to choose how much time before or after sunset before being notified (also for Sunrise, Noon, among others). It would be better with more sounds but as is it is my go to app for notifications for pre-sunsets.

Sleek

This is what an app should be like. Other apps should aspire to the elegance and intuitiveness of this app's simplicity in design.

Somewhat Entertaining !

This app has more potential. I would like to add and see more locations at the same time!
I don't want alarms but simple popups or notifications are fine! the way it is.
To make it an alarm like app I would like all features of Night Stand in it!! But I Still won't use it as a night stand :)
May be you can't use this app everyday but just once in a while to drift away for a moment.
This is a very creative app. It does what it says very nicely and gives a visual of day line.
Developer should add more customizations and options.

Very Useful For Airplane Pilots

Pilots in the u.S.A. need keep track of 3 types of "night", all relative to current location. This app takes out the guesswork and makes it easy. It has a dynamic, clear display of much information, works well, and the developers are maintaining it. It's not perfect, but the 1/2 star of warts aren't enough to push it down to 4 stars. Wishing all apps were this simple, effective, and current.

Is not an alarm.

The app is done well yet is not an alarm. This app is only a reminder or notification type app, there is no alarm. Alarms require action without pause; this app only notifies the user every sixty seconds using a persistence on/off option. If you are looking for a sunrise alarm, this app attempts it but is not a wake-up to action type. My opinion, the marketing is misleading in regard to the alarm functionality otherwise it is a nice app. I'd give five stars if the marketing jargon did not mislead my decision to buy it.

Must-have app for photographers!

Lighting is everything in photography, and this app does an excellent job helping you plan your shoot to get the exact type of light you're looking for (golden hour, dusk, etc). The only way they could make this better is if they added the local weather forecast to show percentage of cloud cover.

Requires location

I was looking forward to using this app. Instead, I had to delete it before even having a chance to explore it.
The app only functions if Location is turned on. But turning it on for this app makes location some have illegitimately siphoned off this data. available to all apps-- and some have siphoned it off and saved / used it illegitimately.
Many location-aware apps offer the option to enter an address or location to be saved with the app. This one simply demands that location service be turned on in order to use the app.
If I hear that an option has been added, I will explore this app again. Until then, it's deleted from my iPad.

Nice

Sol will be helpful the next time I go out shooting - knowing when the sun sets is easy to find out but how much light I've got left during that time is not easy to know without Sol. My only issue using Sol has been with the alarms I've set - they worked well for a while then ones that I wanted to go off once or twice a week all of a sudden want to go off daily even though I didn't edit them. It is useful to see future sunrise/sunset times in other places as well.

I use the app for photography, planning field work, and timing hikes (set out and return times, especially this time or year when days are short).

Great App!

I've always wanted to plan my days around the hours of daylight but between the changing lengths of daylight that God designed in and the twice yearly daylight savings time change that congress instituted, it's always been difficult. I've found myself referring to this app often, not just to get sundown or sunrise, but it's been quite educational. As my kids are homeschooled I have shared definitions and concepts that I've learned from Sol with my family. Thank you for creating such a great resource!

Great tool for those studying anything Celestial

I am a member of the United States Power Squadron, it's an organization that teaches safe boating to the public. As part of the organization it teaches its members various nautical and or boating subjects. One of those subjects is Celestial Navigation. It teaches students how to use a Sextant. There is a great deal of computation needed to reduce their sights of one or more celestial bodies. (Solving for their position on this earth). Time is vital to this process and that is where your application comes into to use.
It is a very big timesaver and we thank you.

A runner's best friend!

This app displays clearly the civil dawn and civil dusk timings that allow me to plan runs in the morning and evening! The GUI is easy to digest, and the info is accurate. You can also pull this info for another location, which is great for planning ahead while traveling.

Very useful

Just what I need to decide how early to get up to maximize my outdoor time while minimizing sun exposure. Nice graphics and excellent functionality. I also appreciate the help info, especially the easy-to-understand explanations of terms in the glossary. It is kind of strange, though, that on an iPad, the help info is presented only in a small, iPhone-size window which can't even be dragged around. A larger or resizable window would be much better. Still, this is a minor enough issue that I am still very pleased with the app and am awarding five stars.

Unknown Need Fulfilled

Didn't realize how much I needed something like this until I got it. Much better at planning my day now that I have visual representation of sunrise, noon, and sunset. Will come in handy this summer for sure!
Could use some more features but it seems like they are working on updates. I check this a few times a week, would be fantastic with lunar data too!

Wake up with the sun

Beautiful way to stay in tune with nature. I've looked for months to find an app like this and was even considering writing it myself, but it never would have looked as stylish. I have just one tiny, teensy feature request: Please, display the alarms on the dial.

Needs a couple improvements...

Firstly... when the alarms goes off, it sounds once, then pauses for a minute, then sounds again, then pauses another minute. This is enough to allow me to dose in and out indefinitely, but hardly disruptive enough to make me want to fully awaken to turn the alarm off. The alarm needs to go on and stay on continuously, annoyingly until I shut it off.
Secondly... because of this intermittent alarm, if I am on another screen using another app and the Sol alarm goes off, if I return to the Sol screen I have to wait around a minute for the Sol alarm to sound again before the OK button reappears so I can shut it off.
Fix these two minor design flaws and you will have the perfect product.

Very useful simple and fun

Really convenient for anyone looking for the golden hour and sunset/rise times. Also big credit for pushing the update to the iOS 6 blinking bug thing so fast. Would recommend (and have to other photogs) and buy again.

Update issues

First I love this app for what it is, it's cool. Second I was having issues with updating the app (under the update tab) kept saying it was no longer available, but the update worked fine from the search tab with a quick search for
Sol, in case anyone else is having issues and reads this :)

Works great!

I get great pictures easily by setting a repeating reminder for sunset, sunrise, and so many minutes after sunrise to catch the sun showing rays over the mountain. The dial is easy to use to get ETA's and setting flexible alarms is easy. Great design. I found a bug in iOS 6, reported it Wed, and it was released the following Tue. I recommend this to anyone looking for a useful reminder Sun app.

Fun for the curious

I love playing around on this app and especially like checking on other locations. Just like my other weather apps, I would love to be able to save favorite locations so I can regularly check on them. I suspect a lot of people do this (my own informal poll) so it may be a good upgrade.
Thanks for creating!

nice, but I would like more alarm options

I really like the ability to set daylight-based alarms, but would live to also be able to set alarms for moonrise/moonset (and maybe planets too), and longer-term alarms too keep me connected to natural cycles: the solstices and equinoxes, lunar cycles.

I LOVE THIS APP

I love this app!! Well worth the price. I live in Tucson, AZ and it is working perfectly for me. I love photography so when the app displays the "Golden Hour" for both morning and evening I know exactly when to get that perfect photo. Very useful so far and the display is very nice. This is the only clock app I have that displays this type of info. I know exactly when the sun rises and exactly how much daylight I have left in the afternoon.

Escape the tyranny of the man made clock

Very useful for maximizing daylight and coordinating activities with respect to dawn and dusk, etc. A suggestion... It would be next-level if one could access the camera via this app and be able to take photos with saved location and solar clock time info with the photo. That way it would be a cinch to track how the changing light of the day yields different photographic results.

Love it!

This is what I wanted, and it's the only app I've found that fit the bill.
Request: would like to see it detect orientation. If I put my iPad in its stand (landscape), the display is sideways. Could also be tweaked in some other ways to better take advantage of the iPad screen size and resolution and to be more readable from a distance.

Very clever and well designed

This is a great app for any photographer or filmmaker as you can tell exactly how many hours of light you have left, and even set alarms for different solar events (warning you a certain amount of time before dusk, for example) - AND the alarms are location sensitive, just like the sunlight is. I can imagine it would also be fun for a kid learning about how the earth moves around the sun and how the seasons change the length of the day. The quick little "shudder to a halt" animation after spinning the sky is a nice touch.

Just what I was looking for!

As an amateur photographer, I was looking for an app that not only shows sunrise and sunset times, but the golden hours with dawn and dusk information too. Most apps are just text but I knew there has to be a app that intuitively displayed the information on a dial. It took some searching but finally I found this great app and it was exactly what I was looking for. Accurate information displayed in an easily digestible and highly configurable way. Fantastic!

Sun synch ya!

This is the perfect app for someone who wants to get up just a few minutes before dawn regardless of what time it is. You set your alarm and off you go! Nice interface too. Couple of enhancements may be to have a snooze when the alarm goes off and more variety of alarm sounds. The ocean, Birds at dawn or something from your iTunes library... Thanks!

Functional & attractive!

As both a frequent sport fisherman and an amateur photographer, I think this app will be incredibly useful! Not only does it give me sunrise and sunset information (as well as magic hour), it does so with a beautiful interface that's easily usable and understandable at a glance. Well worth the money.

Simple and elegant

This is a really creative approach that is simple to understand and use. It's like a fully programmable solar clock with tons of alarm functionality for setting alerts in relation to solar events....sunrise, sunset, golden hour, etc. As a photographer, it is the perfect companion for making sure there is enough time to catch the perfect time lapse. e.g. Rotate the dial to find the sunset time on a particular day, subtract travel, setup, and shooting time and set an alarm. Done.
Also worth noting that if you still prefer things in text/graph form, the information is available in that format as well. Really though, the dial and graphic interface are the central focus, and work so well that they're pretty much idiot proof.

Fun and useful for photographers

Best app I've seen for finding the golden hour each day. Other sunrise apps I've used were about as much fun as a 10 digit calculator. This one actually is fun - scroll the day wheel and there's a colorful visualization of your outdoor light conditions for any given period of the day or night. It's fast, easy to read and easy to use.
Best feature: The ability to create and manage custom alarms for any solar event. It has built in the iOS calendar and alarm system so it was simple for me to set up something like this: a recurring alarm which reminds me 15 minutes before the beginning of the evening golden hour, but only on weekends. Just enough time to grab my camera and go.
Or I could set it to wake me up every sunrise with a rooster sound to go for a run (never going to happen, but okay!)
