Home Outside® is a landscape design app with all the tools you need to mock up your property, create new designs, and share them with friends and family.

Use Home Outside to select and place over 700 beautiful hand-drawn elements including trees, gardens, pools, patios, hammocks, driveways, houses and sheds, solar panels, and just about anything you might want for your property.

Planning for Patio
The app is very helpful in getting a basic plan across. I cant say in was easy to use initially, but by the time I attempted a second draft, I got familiar with the intricate details. I was trying to design a multi level deck so it took a while. For a single level deck, using the app would be very easy. It took a while to map my home to the app and design the patio around it my actual home, but once that's done the trial and error was worth it. Definitely not an app for the technologically challenged.

Just what I needed :)
I needed a site plan of my house and yard for a landscaping seminar. I was having trouble getting it down on graph paper. I was able to use this app to import my lot from the google maps option. Then I added the utilities and structures using the icons from the app. I could see where to put many of them without excessive measuring. The layers worked nicely to help me get exactly what features I wanted to show. I was able to save it to my camera roll and print what I needed for the class. I had a technical issue along the way and I got an email response from tech support. Thanks for all your help and providing this app to allow me to get it done!

Pure Garbage
Where to start, it says to swipe to go to the next page, but you have to do it in at the very bottom of the screen with a stylus, your finger won't work.
You can't change the aspect ratio of items you add, what if your patio isn't square?

FINALLY!!!!!
I’m an avid gardener but have no drawing skills whatsoever. I’ve been trying for years to create a property plan, but I’ve ended up with a bunch of really inaccurate sketches that look like a six-year-old did them. With this app I finally made a plan of my yard that’s to scale and shows where everything is. And it looks beautiful! THANK YOU!

Too complicated to use
Although I am a Master Gardener, I spent an hour trying to understand the indecipherable instructions for use of this app. I could never achieve success in being able to get a drawing of my property to simply begin making a plan. I have deleted it and will search for a more user-friendly garden planning app.

Has bugs but a good app
This app has great features that let you use a real map to get the shape of your property. It can be hard to use and the app does need work. Make sure your save your progress from time to time because I had it mess up and jumble my layout. But free is free

Lots of fun and functionality packed into a little app
I'm not a skilled designer or very good at gardening, but this app is great. It has a wide variety of beautifully designed elements to mix and match... It's great for imagining what to do with our little plot of land in the city. I use InDesign at work and it has all the functionality I need to easily design a landscape (I'd say it's much more intuitive too!). They recently added a wedding palette, which I've been using to try different configurations for our upcoming ceremony and reception. Its accurate enough that I can figure out the size of tent I'll need to fit 150 people. So helpful!
As for the people who complained about the in-app purchases, that's only for a few palettes. You can do a lot for free!

Fun and Easy to Use!
My husband and I have a small yard in front of our home in the city. It was in desperate need of an overhaul. Not having any design or garden experience, we had no clue where to start. I did a quick search around and found this app--it was a huge help to us! We we're able to recreate our house and yard and come up with a beautiful new design, which we were then able to plant ourselves one weekend. The drawings are great and the interface is really fun to use. It's like a design game! Our front yard was totally transformed and I'm so glad we found this app. We plan to use it again when we're ready to tackle our backyard!

Feels like a scam
There may be a decent app under there, but when I install a free app that doesn't even allow me to make the most basic sketch, but simply takes me to a screen offering me the choice of paying $10, or doing nothing, it feels like a scam.

Unusable, what a waste
I purchased this app with all the features. I was unable to use the map feature. And the grid lines weren't adjustable in anyway that made sense to me.

Sort of works
The program is lethargic and incredibly can not be worked on horizontally. It would seem you need a programmers mind to use it - definitely not for people of age or the working man. I spent the full $14.99 to purchase every option and ensure I wouldn't meet obstacles and then spent the better part of an hour figuring out the basics AND STILL HAVENT A WORKING DESIGN. The map link that allows you to find the property you are working on is nothing more than google earth and it is impossible to layout a design using it. I will likely call for help to the developer before deleting the program and seeking a refund. Fifteen dollars for frustration - not a good deal.

Who are writing these "great" reviews? Maybe the sellers of the app... Why not just sell the app at the the start instead of giving something that is useless! I would have bought it for the $9.99 but now not even for $1.99! You can't even add a simple shrub without paying and EVERYTHING cost $. So for me to create a simple flowerbed it would cost at least $24.00 with this app.

Very, very limited even after paid upgrades
Even after purchasing the full load of palettes and tools, this app is barely where it should for free. Try to add a house and then rescale it to square from rectangle...nope. How about a yard bigger than 45 x 70 feet...nope. A grid in the same scale as your measure...nope. Nice looking graphics that, in the end, serve no useful purpose in design.

I want my money back
You can't scale elements by typing in measurements. You can't even customize the size and shape of your space. There is only one elevation - bird's eye view. Clunky; too basic interface, no fine controls. Not ready for prime time, and certainly not worth $15. You're better off using graph paper.

Great concept if only it didn't crash & had more features
This is truly a 'great concept application' for Landscape design, I purchased all features for $14.99 and I am 60% happy with the purchase so far ... BUT, it crashes constantly (possibly a memory hogging app, as I had nothing else open while using).
Also, there are no features for adding plant beds of different shapes with selections of mulch, pine needles, gravel, or other plant bed base materials.
Some of the other reviews also exposed problems with the app functionality. To my knowledge, no update has been released in a while.
More stuctures, more plants, more walkways, more colors, more objects, more details, more features needed to make this Awesome!
The hardscape features should allow for product color changes to view the differences and make the selecting of the appropriate color of product easier.
Irrigation placement & design, along with Drainage options such as box drains, channel drains, & even french drains; would also be a welcomed addition.

This app is pointless! Unless you intend on spending $3 per plant, shrub, and bush EACH! All you can do is structures, driveways/paths, and patio furniture! Only trees are free... Absolutely pointless in regards to designing your landscape plants!

Great app, if it didn't keep crashing
Great idea, but halfway through my designs, just as they start to get more complex, with 5 or 6 layers and laying in the gardens, the app crashes and when I open the design again, only 1/3 of the original size appears. Half of the yard is simply cut off! Please fix this, it could be a really useful tool if it wasn't so glitchy. Thanks for making this app!

Beware the hype! Primitive and buggy, instructions are skimpy - but you don't find that out until you've paid a ridiculous price. What is the point of the map feature if you can't import the picture? And where's the Save button? I've used a better, cheaper design app - I'm deleting this one. What a waste of my money.

For all the naysayers, look at your alternatives. What other 2 D apps are there for home landscape that don't cost a ton? Really these folks need to keep improving and working on this because it has potential. And for 3 whole dollars I can pretty much design all I want. I'm a software person and I understand how much work it takes to get something like this up and running. I'm honestly surprised this niche of apps is not more saturated with 2D design tools because they are very useful.

I never minded paying for an useful and practical app; however, when an app is advertised as "free", the seller should at least forewarn the buyer that additional features must be purchased! I read the many negative reviews but decided to give it a try because I've often found they're not nearly as bad as people write about. This one is really bad - I understand that it is a very basic landscape design app but you have to PAY EXTRA FOR GRASS!!! That is just an insult.

When you begin a project and go to the map to work on a specific property, you cannot begin work around the existing house.
I purchased this to design my landscape around a new house. Not very user friendly. I even purchased the "all in-app" purchases for $14.99 so I could have the full effect of the app. Hold off getting until more updates have been applied.

Overall, I couldn't tell you how the App actually performs because you are required to purchase plants, line drawing abilities, etc. The bare bones basic tools aren't even available. The App allows you to practice placing hard scape objects, rotate them, and change background colors. Other than that, you must purchase. Not a free design App at all. Typical bait, switch and empty promise of another so called "free" App. It's free to download, but certainly not "free" if your ultimate goal is one of doing a landscape design.

Very helpful
Used this to plan an orchard I'm putting in. I was looking for a way to make a visual layout of the existing landscape and the trees/plants I'm putting in and this completely did the trick! :) I didn't spring for the grid lines or Google maps add-ins, although that would've been amazing. I really want to love this app, when I'm home designing client gardens and have wifi I love it.
But when I'm out at these properties with no technology in place yet...it's useless.

This app has great potential. A bit glitchy, but I was able to get a decent landscape design. My only real criticism is that it doesn't give an option for landscape mode.

great customer service - beautiful graphics
To those who have been frustrated by the glitches in this app, please have perseverance. As a friend to the very small studio that created this app, I happen to know that the developers are working furiously to reconcile problems and are responsive to calls and concerns. This has been a very complicated release with a lot of detailed facets, and trust me, they KNOW that some things have gone wrong.
BUT they have been very receptive to feedback and are taking constructive criticism with humility and resolve. So rather than giving the app a negative review, give it a second chance. Please send your concerns directly to them so that they can catalog and fix any other problems. Glitches aside, this is a fantastic product that is very easy to use. Even non-designers can create their own landscape plans very easily. The finished designs look clean and artsy, with great coordinated colors and recognizable site elements. No one else is doing this in quite the same way, with the same style. So if you have a problem call or write the company. They want to give users the best possible app experience. It's good for you. It's good for them. It;s also good for the world of design.

This is a nice but basic program. I looked at the in app purchase list and saw some intriguing modules. Later, when I wanted to purchase the ad-ins, I couldn't find any way to get to the requester or window. It turns out that the purchase option opens up randomly, and is a sign of the basic problem with this program - it is nice and fairly clever, but not well thought out. I can see that it is growing, and may become a decent app, but it has a ways to go.

Not worth the cost
This should be a 99cent app. How it was advertised is not how it appears. Everything is cartoonie. I tried the map option, it was a Google earth image from 2+ yrs ago which wouldn't be so bad except the huge oak tree that covers my whole front yard in the image is no longer there, which is why I am doing landscaping. So I tried the picture option, I had to take three pics of the frontyard, my house is a starter home, not a mansion. Basically it adds cartoon shrubs, which also cost $. I could use paint on my computer on top of the 1 image of my front yard and get results just as good.

Don't bother. This app will only allow you to construct the layout of your structures. After that, you have to buy anything else you want.

Doesn't work
I just downloaded the app and purchased the full set of in-app purchases,$15. Spent hours working on my first design just to have the app freeze and lose everything. Now it doesn't recognize my purchase and won't let me restore. This app has an amazing set of features but useless if you can't use them.

Great app for a home gardener to play with ideas on their tablet or phone. You can even cut off layers.

Terrible, buggy app
This app could be good with a usability specialist on it. It could use better layer functionality. Creating and renaming layers shouldn't be so clunky. Automatic landscape (vs portrait) orientation would be huge.
But then there's the issue where saved designs with manual measurements keep getting broken. Saved measurements become much larger than my drawing, with all elements tiny within my space. A broken measurement typically crashes the app when trying to re-edit.
The measurement tool is actually useless as there are no rulers or sizes for any other element.
Poor, poor job for an initial release. Hire a usability expert and a QA resource.

Dont waste your money
You have to buy $9.99 in in app purchases just to get drawing tools. Then, you cant draw anything to scale. The template items (houses, paths etc) are not editable. You can only make them bigger or smaller,but like zooming the entire item. I rarely review anything, but dont want anyone else to waste therir time and money on this! Im very dissatisfied. Worst ap Ive ever purchased!

Resourceful and Functional
This app does everything I hoped it would.I just replicated my yard in this app and I made a copy of it to start the endless possible transformations I eventually want to realize in my backyard!
Everything from paths , gardens, trees, ponds, sheds, fences, and more, it's in there.
Granted if you're serious about making a layout of your property it's going to take time and resizing and deleting and duplicating items; but it's been very rewarding to see ideas from my head fleshed out to where I can actually see them and then play around to try different ideas.
Another plus, I was working on my initial layout so intently I forgot all about my almost dead phone and it died mid-edit. And I was like "ffffuuuu!" But I powered it back up and all that time and energy wasn't lost, it had saved my work while it was powering down.
I would sink the cash for the full version if I had an iPad to work on bc it is a bit of a strain to do all of this on a 4" screen. But that's not the apps fault at all..( And btw the zoom-in is great too,you can really get in there to make the finishing touches you need.)

I have both in-app purchases (Holiday palette and specialty elements & tools). The holiday palette is just for fun--nice items for decorating yard--I use the specialty elements & tools all the time. Love the variety of plant habits and foliage types…not too specific, so I can resize them and use them for different purposes.

I understand your need to make $$ off an app. That is a given and I totally support good developers. BUT, if you are going to offer a free app to introduce your paid app it MUST have enough functionality to evaluate prior to me paying for it!

Fun, practical app!
This is a terrific app, both for establishing the lay of the land, quick-and-dirty like, and also for layering in a bit more detail. Really easy to use!
You might drive yourself a little crazy trying to level an item you were trying to move, because, once you touch an item to move it, it rotates, and there's no "snap to grid" or leveling function. I write this only because I wish someone would've told me!
The app is still the easiest and most straight forward I've found!

Best app so far for landscaping planning and design
Overall good App. The sketch feature needs more options such as opacity to selected color, and the interface should auto close after you select a pencil color (annoying when you have to constantly hit the color down arrow everytime).. Also needs a better feature to add walls to your custom plans.

GPS and Measuring
I wish you can use different units for measurement input in manual. It doesn't even says Meter or Feet. Plotting on a map with points to get the border of an area will be perfect. Some lands are too big for GPS to work. Other then that.. Very good and verity of the trees.. Quick works for my plots with my phone, however, I wished to plot onsite with somewhat accuracy without having to walk around..

Hard to use!!
So frustrating!! There needs to be an undo button. Many of the items won't let you move them. If you accidentally tap an item right next to, or under the one you're aiming for, your screwed. The item you meant to move will now be buried and you'll never get it. Grrr....

Why doesn't this app like me?!
Awesome concept but needs work!
Make an iPad version, first of all... I didn't realize until I bought it that it would be tiny, blurry when blown up, and stuck in portrait on my iPad.
Some issues:
-Selecting, rotating, and resizing are all difficult.
-Items stick together too easily and are then next to impossible to get apart!
-Moving thin items like fences is really hard!I thought of a few improvements:
-Add gridline option

Just what I needed
This is a decent landscape layout app. You can choose pre-made shapes like stones, plants, and yard related items to build a landscape. Shapes can be resized and rotated. If you are patient and creative you can build exactly what you want!

Needs work!
Please continue to improve this app. Usability is a bear. It's way too hard to resize objects, and it would be great to have a grid one could turn on or off.
There is virtually no competition for a landscape design app right now, so if you beef this up, you could sweep up this profitable app niche.
The objects themselves are beautiful. Just make the app more user friendly, and you'll have a hit!

Fun idea but don't get complicated
As another reviewer mentioned, I paid for this because I didn't see anything else out there. It's very hard to work with on the iPhone. It needs undo badly (or I don't know how to trigger it). It also needs a way to Send to Back/Front. If you touch something it's now in front. I built a long fence and then clicked on a cement patch behind it. Now it's in front and I have to move it then move all the fence pieces and then move cement back and then move all the fence back.

It is OK
I will be trying out a few more updates of this program. One of the biggest things that it needs is an iPad version. The iPhone is fine, but too tiny to really design a backyard layout. Trying to grab a fence for example caused me to shut it down. I was able to place a house, pool and patio. The pool and patio pieces were even grouped together which was nice (I am not entirely sure how to group or ungroup, but that is probably on me more than the program). It was really just trying to deal with such a small space that bugged me.

Close, but not exactly
This is the closest app to what I was looking for, so I paid the 1.99. But it's far from being a decent app. The "flowers" are colored hedge-like drawing in two different colors. Only get this if your ok with basically a starting draft of what you want. I'm going to keep looking....

I think this little app is a lot of fun and can be useful for doing schematic layouts to show a customer. I recommend it to anyone for that reason and I plan to use it to augment more detailed drawings and for adding to my mood board collages. Thanks JMMDS.

Awesome Upgrade!
The new upgrade has made a great app even better! Now with the resize option I can move objects more easily. The visuals are beautiful + the new design makes it easier to create a fun + functional plan.

Needs work
It's very limited as to what it can do. Can't create a complex hip roof home structure. Grouping, ungrouping, moving, rotating, and resizing is cumbersome and not very responsive to touch. Needs better send to front and send to back functionality. Would be nice to be able to have layers that can be turned on and off. Transparency and color adjustment of objects would also be nice. It would be nice to be able to stretch objects, not just scale the same in all directions. Some sort of scale would be nice too. Also need more plant symbols (or the ability to import jpegs of other symbols.) I'm a professional landscape designer and this won't cut it for me. It would be nice to have an inexpensive way to quickly share ideas with clients, but this isn't it...yet. Good idea though.

Excellent
This is a very well thought out application. I highly recommend it to anyone in the landscape design industry however the interface is so simple that anyone with a vision can put a solid plan together.

Not a usable design app
The major flaw as reported earlier is that there is no way to resize anything. It would also be helpful to use real measurements so that a correct ratio could be seen. There isn't enough choices for the elements so you need to use your imagination for the most part. The quality of the drawing is good but without being able to resize it is almost useless. This was a waste of money.

Has promise but some UI flaws
OK for the price but would pay more if it had more features. Major flaw is that you can't resize any of the objects which makes it a big problem for different size yards. It has a good selection of hand drawn landscape objects. Only one House object. Hope they continue improving it but not usable yet.
