Decent -

I've been using ibreviary since its inception, first on an iPod touch more than five years ago. It's never perfect, but it has been very well done.
I asked the to stop changing the breviary to add "inclusive" language some time ago. They did for a while, but it has returned.
I think they're a little too interested in pushing their agenda through the app.
#22 of the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy says:
Therefore no other person, even if he be a priest, may add, remove, or change anything in the liturgy on his own authority.
And yet, he persists.

Excellent, easy to use

When you don't have access to the single or four-volume LOTH, this app is the way to go both on iPhone and iPad.
Update: I don't know when it happened but you can no longer adjust the font size for this app on iPhone and that is a HUGE fail. Very disappointing.
Update 2:
I'm about out of patience with this app, which used to be superb. Now, when you attempt to enlarge the font size in book mode it automatically switches over to normal mode with its standard, unchangeable font. Furthermore, when you try the "pop-up" feature from the home screen icon on the iPhone 6s, it opens and then immediately crashes. Very disappointed with the degradation of this app.

From polished to buggy...

This app went from feeling like a polished app to a buggy beta. The text size won't adjust unless you're using the book setting, the text links in the breviary don't work, and the auto scroll has been replaced with an non working audio. Oops

I can't get it to do either one. I've come to rely on ibreviary for most all my daily prayers. I have to wear an extra pair of reading glasses on top of my bifocals in order to see the text. I still rate it at 5 stars. I like it that much...

I bought the 6S in September. I had the app for several years and liked it on my 4S. Since I upgraded it only crashes so I can't use it anymore. I emailed Paulo but have not heard back. I'm disappointed and irritated.

A Few Issues

The app is overall very good. However, I use the ordinary form Latin language for my LoTH. Most of the time the prayers are not completely written down. They end in a conclusion like "Qui vivit." Also, the blessing at the end isn't present. Lastly, this morning the Canticle of Zechariah didn't even have an antiphon. Overall, this is a great app (I don't even know where else I would have an OF Latin option!), but there are some kinks.

Very helpful app

This app is especially helpful for those who are traveling or find carrying a breviary with them cumbersome. It is also great for those who cannot afford the entire breviary set. The Roman missal and the readings for Mass are an added bonus.
There are only two minor negatives I would point out. The first is the use of inclusive language, which is not found in the printed breviary. This difference makes it awkward to pray in common with others who are using the printed version. The second is that the office for the wrong day may occasionally be uploaded.
Other than these minor issues, this app is excellent.

Great app! w/ Some annoying features

This app works great consistantly! I really appreciate all of the settings and options provided, but some of the features are a little annoying. For example, the pop-up that comes up everytime you open the app, or the ability to slide the options panel open (I oftentimes slide the panel open by mistake when scrolling down). Otherwise, this is a solid app and is quite beautiful! Thanks for all of the content provided on this app!

No font changes for Mass? What gives?

Have loved and supported the app from the beginning. Latest iOS upgrade appears to have disable the ability to change font sizes for Mass mode. There may be other problems that need resolution but making a fix for this would seem a priority. It is, after all, the Mass.

Love it! But there's a glitch with 3D Touch

I love this app. I've had it for years and use it daily! There's a minor glitch with the 3D Touch, however. Just wanted to make developers aware that when you use 3D Touch, the "Gospel of the Day" doesn't work, it just takes you to the main screen. And the "Saint of the Day" and "Suggested Prayer" both take you to the gospel. Just looks like shortcuts need to be rerouted.
Regardless, I highly recommend this app. It's simplistic, which is nice, because so many apps are so cluttered and messy. Happy praying! :)

Excellent app, but...

The readings for mass are excellent. However, it's different scriptures for English and Spanish. I do not know for other languages, but I was under the impression the church read the same readings. Most important app on my phone!

It's so very often I am out and about without my four volume Breviary but I am saved by this amazing app because I always have my iPhone! Praise God it is so wonderful to pray even when I am in a public place. How beautiful it is to pray even in the parking lot or waiting in a line or at an event. Fantastic app

I used to use the 4 volume Breviary set an have been using iBreviary for the past few years. It is a great app that lets me keep the breviary with me all the time (both iPad and iPhone) so I can pray when I get a time break. I am a priest for seven years I love the app it's wonderful thank you so much for your hard work the only thing that myself and other priests have talked about is it would be nice to have a section of alphabetical hymns because so often some of us have the books and others have their iPhones if we had alphabetical hymns we could be together very easily by finding the same hymn.

I love this Breviary app. I had trouble with the update because I had not yet updated to the newest iOS, now 9. I always wait about 6 months till they get all the bugs worked out. Absolutely essential prayer tool for the modern world

This is the kind of app that I wonder how I ever lived without it before. It's so nice to have not only the breviary with me at all times in my iPhone but also the mass readings of the day and the parts of the liturgy. In addition to all of this it comes inant languages so one can practice and pray in another language of choice as well as Latin! It helps me to be able to pray whenever and where ever when I have a moment in a busy day.

Excellent! The best!

Update: works great on iPhone 5s and iPad running iOS 8.1. Had to install twice on iPad - the first time kept crashing but reinstallation worked fine. Earlier review below still applies.
For what this app does, this version is the best I've seen for those who pray the Christian Prayer. All hours are included. It is accurate (rare errors), complete, includes Psalm Prayers, includes optional memorials and allows all three daytime hours to be prayed. Hymns are selected that retain fidelity to the printed version as well. The English version uses the translation required in the US and Canada. I would recommend this to everyone who desires a convenient way to pray the hours - you can let go of the printed version!

Functionality is great - Aesthetics are not

I love ibreviary, insofar as it does what it says it does and more: allows me to pray the breviary on the go, gives me the daily readings, and more. The problem, is, however that the interface is garbage. What once looked relatively nice, if a little cheesy with fake leather, is now a hodgepodge of bad ideas thrown together: a little leather here, some layering there, random button placement. Truly, after a full redesign, it will deserve 5 stars, until then, however it will remain at 3

Connected to the World Through Prayer

As a lay person, I was introduced to this app by a young priest who studied in Rome. I feel that whenever I pray the hours, I am praying with all the religious in the world. As others have mentioned, downloading a week at a time is great, but so is having the readings at my fingertips while I live abroad and attend Mass on local churches. I can follow along, and again, I know that I am part of the universal Church. I fell in love with Vespers years ago, and now, instead of investing in a 4-volume set of prayer books for the hours, I have what I need to pray not just Vespers, but all the hours without having to take a class on going to the correct collect! Bravo to the developers, and Mille Grazie!

Excellent

Thank you for this service you provide to Catholics bringing the Divine office to the people. It takes the mystery of switching around if you were using a hard copy. It enhances the prayer experience because the prayers and readings just flow according to the sequence.
I share this with everyone who is interested in praying and learning the Liturgy of the Hours. It is easy to learn and follow. You can't really learn to pray this wonderful tradition on your own using a hard copy version.

I am grateful for an app version of the Liturgy of the Hours. It is also a blessing the app is offered free and shows a spirit of stewardship. I am so pleased this app also includes a form of the daily offering. I love the full description of the Saint of the day as well. And if that were not enough, the daily readings are also included! Excellent app well on its way to superb.

I use English most of the time and Spanish sometimes. I did use Italian when I lived in Italy. Latin is disappointingly irregular and unattractive. If anyone would be interested in Vetus Ordo this is not the app for you.
The English is the American version and very reliable. Spanish is, I think the Version used in many Latin American countries. This also excellent.
The program is so convenient and reliable. Useful in every way. I would recommend some better care to the Latin. Also a more integrated way of following the Mass (a la Universalis)

Incredible help for the Daily Office

The amount of info this app has is off the charts. It's been a great help when I'm out and about and in a group. I dinged it a star because it's sprawling and often offers too much and feels cluttered. If your going to use it to bless a couple using your iphone, forget it. Perhaps it's easier on an ipad, but the phone is too small a screen. Perhaps spinning off parts into another will help. Otherwise terrific job.

Convenient for daily enrichment

As a layperson in the habit of praying the office using the four volume text, iBreviary is comparable, complete, and convenient. I use it everyday. Some of the features I use are the morning office, morning and evening prayer, daily Mass and getting to know the saint of the day. May God bless the Franciscans who maintain iBreviary! Thank you for blessing us with this essential source for daily prayer.

Better & Better

We've been using this App for many years and we LOVE it. Each upgrade brings new blessings. We travel a lot and don't have WiFi at times. Downloading a week at a time was a marked improvement for us. Also, when we travelled with the books between seasons we had to pack four books. Now we download our 2 iPhones & 2 iPads and we're ready for anything. The parking lot at McDonalds WiFi gives us our weekly "fix." Thank for all the improvements.

UNRELIABLE

The Latin version is often incomplete or incorrect. Sometimes it provides the proper text of the day, but leaves out the psalmody, other times the proper text is incorrect, or it gives the text for one hour under the heading of another or no text at all! The English version is better, but occasionally contains mistakes. As a priest who is bound to recite the Office, I simply cannot trust iBreviary when I travel. I always download the weekly text of the app. "Breviarium Meum" by the Franciscans of the Immaculate as a backup. Sure, it's longer, but I have always found it to be accurate. At least I know that with it I can be sure that I am reciting the prayer of the Church! I would happily donate to iBreviary if it were not so unreliable. A great idea, but it is not suitable for clergy and religious who are bound to the canonical Hours.

A blessing wrapped in a great app

Truly a great app. I've been praying the LOH with some assistance from technology for years. While I often pray from the four volume set I love the ability to refer to another source to make sure I get all the prayers right on memorials and feasts.
But, this latest revision may move me to pray almost exclusively using this app. The automated date syncing and the easy ability to jump over things that don't apply to me in that hour are just two of the things I love.
I love and highly recommend this app!

Pray always

I am so thankful for the makers of this app and I'm sure God will send them great blessings for their work. It is possible now to pray always when books are not always something people will carry everywhere we tend to do with our devices. It is also easier to follow than the books. I should give 5 stars just based on the fact people can pray now the most important prayers of the church. If possible it would be nice to look at any day of any year rather than what I download. I would like to do what the Universalis app does .

Not only useful but also BEAUTIFUL!

I use the English version if this app to pray the Hours and/or look up Mass readings almost every day. I love having both of those things with me all the time so I can pray wherever I am, and the new automatic download feature is incredibly helpful! Also a great app to use while traveling, since you can download a week (or more) of prayers and readings in advance, to be used even without service/wifi.

I love this app, and use it daily for the Liturgy of the Hours and for the Mass readings. It is wonderful to be able to change languages when I travel. I only wish the French version were as complete as the English, for example the in French version the Office of Readings does not include the Scripture reading. Also, sometimes the readings are not the same as in the paper version (in French, I have not tested the English). In spite of these small problems, I still consider it a most helpful app.

Key part of my daily prayer

I use this app daily. I like that it will read the text to me while I walk. This feature could use some more functionality - specifically the ability to skip text. Can you add the ability to mark favorite prayers to make it easy to access them? It would also be helpful to be able to add my own prayers. That way all my prayers would be in one place.

Very worthwhile app

Much handier than flipping around in my old iBreviary, though I give up being able to conveniently pray for the saint of the day. All in all, though, very handy and makes it easier to keep up with my prayer life joined to others in the Church. Downloading a week at a time is great. All the other bonus prayers are additional benefit. Overall a great app

A great app

This is a great app for praying the Divine Office on the go. Best features: 1) the ability to download a week of the Divine Office at a time so, if you're not online, you can still pray. 2) the options to pray in multiple languages, which is great if you're learning a foreign language. Biggest drawback: a better audio would be appreciated. It's very artificial at the moment and clearly a computer program converting text to speech. But, hopefully, that'll improve with updates. But, overall, I'm delighted with the app and feel its one of the best apps of its kind.

Good, but major issues.

I'm 17 and enjoy praying the Divine Office and this app makes it so easy. But, please go back to the old version. It was so much easier to use. The download times were noticeably shorter and I could download a whole week if I was going away. Also, it's so hard to scroll on this version as it seems to think I'm swiping to the sides. I got so frustrated because if the scrolling issue and the constant lag that I couldn't finish afternoon prayer. Sometimes it seems like it would be easier to lug an actual breviary around (by actual I mean the book). Please, go back to the old format. It would make things so much easier. But, Breviaries are expensive. Thank you for bringing this wonderful devotion to the laity!

Earlier version better

My husband and I have been using iBreviary on a daily basis for more than 2 years for both daily Mass and the Liturgy of the Hours. We think so highly of it that we made an unsolicited donation to the app's author. That said, we are very disappointed with its latest revision. Familiar ways of navigating have been replaced with ways that are less intuitive. Frequently-used screens are cluttered with too many --unneeded-- options. The new version was unstable and had to be corrected with at least 2 updates. If the new app design was reversed back to the old design, we would award it 5 stars without hesitation. The take-away from this review is: iBreviary wasn't broken, so why did it have to be "fixed"?

Has saved my prayer life.

This is a fantastic app. It was recommended to me by a priest who uses it for his daily prayers. Personally, I love the four volume set that I have, but always hated flipping back and forth. Nice presentation and well rounded work. The newest update made some aesthetic changes that I not sure about, but the usefulness and reliability of the app stay the course. Well done and thank you!!

Better than divine office app!

One this app cost less, bonus! Two if you want it lets you choice the various responses for the day and has several liturgical calendars to follow if you want to follow a specific order. And bonus it has more than the breviary like the divine office app, which only has the LOH and not extra prayers, you have to buy a separate app from them for that.

Great App

I have had this app for about a year and it's been really great! Just recently though it would keep crashing every time I tried opening it. I went to their website, and talk to one of their "agents" in a chat room. All I had to do was delete the app from my phone, download it again, and then update it to the 4.1 version from my current version of 4.0. It was that simple.
-I would suggest this app to anyone thinking about getting it!

Not perfect, but close.

This Divine Office app has a lot going for it. For people starting to pray the Liturgy of the Hours, this is a great place to begin. Sometimes the daily readings for Mass are, well, lacking. For example, there were some serious issues with the Mass readings for the 2014 Triduum. There was nothing there for the Easter Vigil. Any challenges with this app are far outweighed by the benefits. Download it, use it, and strongly consider making a donation.

Fantastic app!

I always loved this app, as a seminarian it is such a great aid for being on the go. I never worry about not having my breviary with me (though nothing beats praying from the book itself). I have had this app for more than a couple of years now and never considered writing a review until this new update was released. I am very ecstatic that the app now supports arabic. I look forward to saying the office in arabic. I have been looking for a great Roman Rite Catholic arabic app, which you can imagine is difficult to find. This app has everything I already loved about it now in arabic: the prayers, mass readings, order of the mass, the breviary, etc. Thanks so much for the recent update! Also those who read this, please support the Christians in the Holy Land! We do exist and are in need of our Christian brothers and sisters to keep us in their prayers and hearts. God Bless

Oh yes!

I was so excited for the new update! I even forestalled praying compline so I could update. But when I launched it, it closed right away. This is certainly a five star app, but because of this bug I have to give it two. I'm using an iPod touch 4th generation iOS 6.1.6.
EDIT: After shutting down my iPod over night, I tried praying morning prayer and everything went smoothly. I really like the new interface, keep it up!

Perfect for daily prayer!

I use this every single day! I love how it has the revised collects for the corrected translation of the Roman Missal in English. I love how I can download days ahead of time. I love how I can "change it up" a bit with the various language options (personally, I use Latin and English). I love how it has a great collection of prayers and the Missal and readings are very useful!
Thank you and God bless you for this wonderful app!

Great App. Nice update. AT&T blocking cellular access

The update was very nice. This app is very useful for those of us that pray the Divine Office and attend Mass frequently, especially for those of us who live in a multi-lingual environment. My Parish has Latin Masses if both the Ordinary and Extraordinary forms, as well as English. So having iBreviary handy means I can dispense with multiple hand Missals. Also it is most convenient to be able to pray the Divine Office whenever and wherever.
One note. I still cannot connect to the site via AT&T cellular. WIFI, no issue. Daughter's Verizon cellular, no issue. Called AT&T and they seem not to be interested in fixing this. Is it just me or are others having issues too?

Great app, and good tech support, too

I've enjoyed the IBreviary app ever since I bought my first smartphone in October 2011. It's extremely convenient to have the Liturgy of the Hours (and other prayers) easily available when I travel.
I recently encountered some trouble when I wasn't able to download new days or info. I emailed the tech support through the app and was impressed with the rapid response. It took a couple of days to sort out the problems with DNS, but they kept me up to date the whole time.
I highly recommend this app.

Good News!

When the latest version was installed, the daily downloads stopped working. However, the app wasn't broken. The problem was with the network access to the server containing the daily files. The server network access now has been fixed. The daily downloads are now working.
This app is incredible with the work that was put into making the Breviary, Daily Mass, and all the prayers available in one place! I use this app several times a day. I highly recommend this app!

Thank You

Finally the application is working. I received an email from the developer informing me that AT&T had finally unblocked the IP address of their server. Now it downloads eveything in a lightning speed as before and not to mention the new additional features and the new UI. I like the customized Mass features. I have one suggestion though. Can you bring back in the list of the Eucharitic Prayers the four Various Needs EP's? I love those Eucharistic Prayers. Keep up the good work. God bless you. Note to all the users like me: if you have technical problems like the one recently or any other issues just email the developers. Tap the encircled letter "i" on the upper right corner for the iPad and for the iPhone/iPod it is found in the Settings, uppermost right hand corner. Let's give credit to these people who are offering this application for free. I think it's not fair to lambast them in the iTunes store for technical problems and not application related afterall. That being said kudos to the developers.

V1.0.8: Works great!

V1.0.8 fixes several issues I was having in v1.0.7. Thank you for the continued development & maintenance of such a wonderful app.
I have really enjoyed using this app for daily readings, learning the Liturgy of the Hours, and as a handy prayer book. I especially like the ability to load up a few days in advance for those days that I may not have access to a wireless network.
Peace be with you.

Amazing

This is a tremendously comprehensive app. If you're Catholic, you will be amazed at the information this app contains. I haven't seen an after meal prayer in years and this app has the one I grew up with. I had needed to access the special features of my phone so that I can listen to the prayers while I'm driving. I would suggest that if it would be possible to put a voice feature with this app, it would make it more convenient to use. Overall, five stars for quality, content and presentation.

Almost Perfect

I've been using this app for over a year now, and I hardly ever open up my hardcopy Christian Prayer book any more. This app is a true godsend, letting me carry the LOTH with me all the time. I like being able to occasionally switch from English to Latin to see what the original prayers look like.
I often pray part of Vespers with my family at the dinner table. The kids like passing the iPhone around as we take turns reading. The sections of prayers and blessings is also wonderful.
It is such a richly filled app, and for free, that I have to give it five stars. However, I do have a couple of quibbles: some days, some of the content I'm looking for is just not there. I would also like to be able to set a retention policy to automatically remove what's been download after two weeks, for example.

Almost perfect

Everyone loves ibreviary! My group of friends prays the liturgy of the hours often and this is a great way for everyone to be able to participate even if they don't own the books. I agree with previous posts. The content is wonderful, but it takes a while to load and there are often spelling errors, which makes group recitation hazardous. Haha! Work out the glitches and you'll have a ton of Catholics sayin "AMEN!" Thanks so much for your dedication to the life of the Church!

very nice app, too internet dependent, slow download

This is a very nice app, the display of the prayers is beautiful, and the language selection is great. I have two major problems with it:
1) it is too internet dependent. I wish there were an option to just download the prayers for the whole year, just as the 'Universalis' App does. Right now, with my iPod touch if I am in a place with no internet and I didn't download the week in advance... no prayers and no Mass readings.
2) the download time for today's prayers is sometimes very slow, which is strange to just get a few pages of text.
Another small issue that is strange: in the settings, there are two lists of the days that have been downloaded, with one line of entry for each day, for each language. Why two lists? The lists become very long with time. It would be much better to have a single selector of day/month/year instead of this very long list.
Altogether, a fine app. Hopefully we will be able to see an improvement with more control and better speed of the downloads

Great app - Handy but a hole or two

This is a terrific app that allows me to leave my breviary home when traveling and is practically always accurate in the text and liturgical calendar. Overall it's a terrific resource for the e-Catholic.
Two things to mention:
1) Odd that there's no "back" button on the screen with the LOTH prayers. To return to the breviary menu or main menu requires exiting the app and terminating it.
2) Just realized it keeps in local storage all of the days I've downloaded. Ought to be a setting where old days get deleted automatically or there should be an easier way to clear out the cache other than delete-swiping each individual day.
Thank you for the app.

I can't believe this is free

There is a ton of stuff jammed into this one free app. I would expect to pay at least a few dollars for something so vast.
I have not had problems with the screen freezing or dates not being available as other reviewers have mentioned. Once there was a slight delay (less than 30 seconds) when the program needed to load a new day, but other than that, it's run quickly and smoothly.
Once again I'm blown away by how many prayers, rites, etc. have been given away in this free app, I am already getting a lot of use out of it.

Completely UNRELIABLE

I really like the new interface. I've been using iBreviary since it came out in 2009. This is a great advance in function and use.
SATURDAY COMPLINE NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER Changes. And yet, they CAN'T seem to get the texts prepared in time.
I paid for the IBreviary Pro, which had the same problem, that is, they apparently only put up the texts when they feel like it. If they don't feel like it, you get an ANNOYING message telling you "the texts are not yet available." That is at NOON on the DAY when they are to be used.
It's a great idea, but it is a half-hearted execution by someone who apparently doesn't really care that much.
At first I loved this app, but, of course, as soon as you start to depend on it, it proves completely unworthy of your trust.
It's free, so give it a whirl. If they charge 10 cents for it, keep your money until the developers decide if they really want to be serious about it.

Great ... but it has had its issues recently

Just a caution for all those who are downloading this app. It is truly a wonderful modus orandi when it is transcribed correctly--which is most of the time. However, in recent days I have had many instances where the psalms have been missing from Morning Prayer (Lauds) and Evening Prayer (Vespers). Everything else is there--the hymns, the readings, the intercessions--but not the psalms. (I don't know if this problem has been manifest in the other hours or not; I haven't checked.)
I rate this 5 stars simply because it is so convenient and helpful--and free--when everything is present. I have sometimes wondered if the authors of the app would like some volunteer help in transcribing the English texts--or proofreading them. I would be glad to help.

Name and feature change from iBreviary Pro

Nice changes especially in the ability to download a week at a time then select the day you want without waiting for the download to end.
Font size change done easily with the "pinch" method like all Safari. No need to go to a settings menu to change the size.
Obviously the description is in Italian but you can pray in English with a setting change.
