I use this app to locate planets and stars with my telescope, and it works beautifully! It is always accurate and reliable. Highly recommended. Note: most issues with planetary positioning and the compass have to do with inaccurate location. I suggest downloading the free version first to test it out before buying the full version. Otherwise, the app is incredible.

I absolutely love this app. It not only shows constellations but the name of the stars, planets, and some of man made things that are orbiting around Earth. Amazing! It reads off if your location so the GPS makes it so that u can know where the things in space are during morning and night. It will also be able to read through buildings, cars, ect. I would totally recommend this app for an active star gazer or just for someone who wants to know if they are looking at Venus.

I just downloaded this app tonight and tried it out. So far, so good. I had downloaded Sky Map last night and it was all over the map...pun intended. This one actually uses the camera and so far it seems to know what it is doing. I have to practice a lot more with it as time allows but it looks very promising, especially for a free app. Many people are becoming more interested in astronomy because of the Revelation 12 sign, Google it, and speculation about Nibiru.

To be able to point to the sky no matter when and where and see what is around you in the skies - planets, stars, galaxies, satellites and even Hubble telescope and international space station- that is something best left for individual experience. This is innovative usage of technology at its best. For those of us who have pointed optical telescopes into skies and fiddle around with controls for diurnal adjustments etc. the power of this app is even more appreciable.
Great work! Thank you !
Definitely switching to paid version as a token of appreciation even though the free version is perfectly fine without any crass commercialization.

This is a great app for anyone of any age! And what's better than an amazing, beautiful, FREE app?! It's simple and easy to use, which makes it accessible for all. I love the soothing background music too! I have used this app for about 5 months now, and I can't stop using it! I always use this app when I want to find a certain star, galaxy, or planet in the sky, and it's always worked. I would recommend this app for anyone who's into astronomy, like myself. Overall, awesome stargazing app!
Recommendations to make this app even better:
- add more facts about the overall sky objects! ( I want to learn more about space, and so do other people)
- add a reminders mode where we can get notified if there is going to be a comet, eclipse, or meteor shower.
- add a star-finder mini game for younger kids to get involved in astronomy! (Have a set of plants, constellations, and stars, for young kids to find while using the app)

Super!

This free app is the coolest thing on my phone. When I lose my perspective, it takes only a moment to access the incredible universe surrounding me and is to regain. I love the app for its accessibility, it's cost (free), it's cool and soothing background music, the links and graphics. Very cool. I share the app with people everywhere I go-- fam, friends, colleagues, clients and even strangers... a great instant reminder of how vast is our universe and that all is well, even when we may have troubles or concerns in our own tiny flash of life 😊

Ever since I was a Youngster I have been fascinated with the stars. I used to crawl onto the top of the house or in a tree just to observe and Yes I got in trouble for it sometimes. I started this adventure when I was about four. I am now Sixty Six years young and was introduced to this app by a good friend who is a jet fighter trainer pilot in the Euro Nato Pilot Training Program at Sheppard Air Force Base. We were talking about the Stars one night and I told him my story and about having a telescope and he turned me on to this app. I use it quite frequently and really enjoy it. Five Stars from me. Thank You

I love being able to step outside at night and find the names of the brightest objects in the sky, or even those that appear to be alone. It's also fun to be able to aim down and see what's happening on the other side of our planet. The best is when camping and the light pollution is greatly reduced so I can see more of the dim stars the app shows are there, but are hard to see in a city.

This is startastic!

I know, it's a corny play on words, but I absolutely love this app and the ability it has to track everything from constellations to individual stars and planets to satellites.
I've used it to catch a glimpse of the ISS as it hurtled across the sky to discovering new constellations I hadn't really known before. Now I use it to instill a sense of wonder and discovery in both the scout troop I lead as well as my own sons. Way to go! Fantastic app!

I have used this app for a couple years now, and I cannot say that there is an app I have used for the same amount of time that has brought me more joy, excitement, and satisfaction than this one. It allows my never ending curiosity to be aided in a way that leads to discovery. Which I think is absolutely awesome. I would call myself an amateur astrophotographer, and this app helps me out a bunch. It is also really helpful to be reading a section of the textbook for my current astronomy class, and be able to whip this app out and find what star or galaxy we are talking about.
I do wish it would give you a better look into the future, being able to project where certain stars, galaxies, or nebulae will be in a larger scope of time. I am practicing taking shots of the heart of the milkyway, but I still have about a month or two until it will be near that time where I live. I'd like to be able to plan a bit more for my shots, so I end up on safari searching for the right info to help me out. I feel that would be a modest addition to the app.

This app is great, but I have a suggestion.

What if you made this app compatible with VR headsets. It would make this that much better! It would be even more immersive than it already is! Also there could be a "weather" mode where you over lay photos of space onto the clouds so it would be like looking through them. And to go with "weather" mode, you could make it so that you could manually set the horizon so that it would be calibrated correctly.

This app is quick and easy to get the hang of and does an excellent job of indicating just what (and where) objects are in the sky. It can even show you where things are below the horizon. It's especially handy for daytime use- if you ever have the need to know what's above you when the sun is shining! Best of all it is super fun to use :)
I highly recommend at least downloading and checking it out!

I often wonder what is shining brightly above me and have only to raise my phone (with this app) to find out what it is. As others have noted as well, I also sit inside and look all around including the floor below to see where everything is. The find feature is fabulous as it points in the direction of what you are looking for, such as stars, planets, satellites, constellations and galaxies!

I have a 6 year old boy that loves space. His obsession started with Star Wars, believe it or not!bhe has been to the Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville Alabama. I downloaded this app over the summer so we could stargaze together with something interactive (he's a hands on boy and just looking up at the sky is boring to him). He loves this app. My mom ended up getting him a telescope and it just got delivered today. Without her knowing, the telescope actually supports this app. How perfect! Lol can't wait to use these two products together.

I just watched the International Space Station. It was awesome. Brightest moving star, no blinking, no noise. Took about 25 seconds to watch from the edge of trees overhead where I am. But...the app was off in its timing by about 30 seconds. It showed that it had passed already, and I was about to give up, when it did show up. And the tracking of the ISS orbit was off a bit too, although it paralleled what I saw pretty close. I read in another review about this, so I guess it's not EXACT but could be better if a description about time delay was offered. My confidence in looking at other satellites is now off a bit now, if I had not seen the ISS first.I texted with a good geeky friend who is in to space, and he confirmed what I saw. It was great to see the ISS. Well worth it.

I was in the mountains this we keen looking up at the stars and thought to download this app. I've mostly forgotten all of the constellations I once had memorized in 6th grade, so it was awesome to see them come to life. The app does an excellent job of making everything informational without taking away from the sky's natural beauty.
The only thing I wish the app had was the ability to search for a constellation. I was looking for Orion's Belt and couldn't find it, so it would have been cool to enter that constellation and have the app direct me to its location. I eventually found it (turns out it was blocked from my view from where I sat).

I've learned a lot about the stars and planets it's a really cool app. Only neg is that it's not very accurate but it's free and if you wiggle it around a little bit you will probably be able to figure out what you're looking at. Also the constellations are drawn onto the screen and block all the stars I want to figure out what they are, IMO they need to make a toggle to turn it off. FYI I live in Los Angeles so there is not much in the sky.

Version 3.4.2
For some reason's location of some stars are not exactly matching when it shows on the app. One clear evidence is the moon, it's way off. Also I think this app needs more information such as giving distance, density and if it's possible how the store looks like from the inside and what kind of material doesn't have, more pictures, and the ability to rotate the star if we use our finger on the picture. May need some upgrading my the creator. Over all, I like it 😊!

Cool, but

Version 3.4.2
What am I missing. I know the sky is big, but is the view suppose to configure to my phone screen. If it does, instructions are poor on how to do this. None of the constellations fit in screen view of bee iPhone 6s. I'm sure there is probably a configurable view but I can't find it. Also, I took 3 photos. They aren't shaved to photos automatically? I have to send them to myself.
I think the app is a little too complicated for what I wanted. I just want to see what planets and stars are in view of my night sky area.
Maybe this app isn't for me. I'll keep checking others.
For these, only 3 stars.

Great but I can't read anything.

I downloaded this app and was very excited when I opened it. Obviously wherever I pointed it , it was dead one. Found the star/ planet and some little teeny writing in a skinny unreadable font popped up in the lower left hand corner. No matter what I did I couldn't read it. It would get more stars if they would fix that. I had to download another app. Super bummed. Because the other Apps screen was off - so when I pointed at something, I had to move it around to find it on my screen. But at least once I found it- I could read what I was looking at.

I don't ever review apps. Ever. But after using this bodacious masterpiece for only a small matter of time, I was determined to spread the word about this blessing. I thought I liked stars and space before. I've always been a bit of a NASA nerd and watched Doctor Who, Star Wars, Star Trek, etc. and I can tell you that my obsession with space has multiplied a hundredfold and then some. Everything about this app is spectacular, user-friendly, easy to navigate, and spot on. I would give this an infinite amount of stars if it were possible. Probably the best free app you can find (Sorry, Pokémon Go). I would absolutely recommend without any hesitations!

I mostly use the iPad for news, mail, Skype, research, ocean navigation, and data files. I live on the ocean. When I saw this app advertised I thought why not. I can afford the 3G down load. The APP is great, I love it, lots of fun. Any one with a iPad and looks up at night should have this. Only problem is it does not see the GPS until I start a nav program and then it finds my position. I am going to upgrade it. A very nice APP. S/V SELAH

First of all, I rarely ever write reviews. However, I just couldn't believe how awesome this app was, and for free?! I've always been interested in knowing what stars, planets, and other celestial bodies are above me, but taking an astronomy class got me more interested. Nevertheless, I never had a way to verify what I was looking at was what I thought it was. But then I found this app...and I can't believe how accurate and detailed it is! You can even view the sky from different times and locations. I highly recommend it, even if you're just slightly interested in knowing what's above you. 😊

Amazing App!

I was up till 3:00 this morning playing with this fantastic app! Like many who reviewed before me, I love it. I thought you had to go outside and aim it at the sky for it to work. Nope! It works anywhere, and a biggie for me was to discover that it also shows what's in the sky on the OTHER side of our planet! Just aim it at the floor and you will see everything that's below your feet in the "other" sky. This was where I saw the International Space Station and the Hubble telescope for the first time. I used to have a telescope years ago and I sure wish I'd had this app then! It is great fun and I may take the plunge eventually and get the paid version. Download, and enjoy!

First off, I've been disappointed with nearly every app I've ever tried. This one, however, is a notable exception. From the overwhelmingly positive, detailed reviews i read to the first time I used the app and saw the names of all the celestial bodies I've been viewing my whole life, this app does exactly what I imagined apps were supposed to do, namely, one simply points it at the sky and clicks on the object for which the person needs more information, and the app does the rest. I absolutely love looking at the night sky. I've never owned a telescope, but I've always been slightly embarrassed by my consistent inability to accurately identify anything beyond the Big Dipper, the moon, Polaris and a few other celestial bodies. This app provides information that i would gladly pay typical app prices to gain access to, yet it's completely free and so far I haven't clicked on anything requiring an in app purchase to get the requested info. The app designers deserve serious props for providing a free app that perfectly serves the purposes for which I downloaded it. Anyone with any interest in stargazing should have this app, even if (or especially if) the person owns or has access to a telescope. Finally, someone actually provided an app for which I have absolutely nothing (so far) negative to say.

I used to love learning about space and going to the NASA website and watching live streams of the International Space Station, but lately I've been less and less enthusiastic about it, life hit hard and I stopped dreaming about the stars, then one night me and a friend tried to figure out if that twinkle in the sky was a planet, found this app and now I can't get off it I'm hooked again and I'm loving it.

First off - I never write reviews. That being said, I learned about this app from a byline in a magazine in which a photographer said "I used the Skyview app to calculate the sunset". OK, interest perked for the photography side of myself; who wouldn't want to know exactly when that magical light will appear and fade at your location?
So I installed the free version and found myself outside at night learning about stars, constellations, and plants I didn't know were visible then.
Overall this is a fantastic app, and I literally can't think of *one* thing I would change. And this is the FREE version!
If you want to learn about astronomy, are curious about the stars, planets, constellations, etc. download and install this app. Then walk outside on a clear night, let the app access your location to calibrate the display, and be amazed at what you learn.

Try this!!!

This app is so awesome!!! I'll be lucky if I don't end up writing a whole essay on this 😂. It's educational, especially for younger kids to learn quicker and be interested. There's different settings, modes, stuff on the store, just amazing. You can see the planets turning on their axes (plural of axis). You can go forward or backward into time. 😃 there's so many cool things about this app you just HAVE to try. (Not really, I just love this app and am using empathy 😂) just please try this!!!!'

OMG! This is soooo freakin cool! It's amazing! I love it! ♥️I feel like I'm on the show Stargate and I'm Doctor Who going around in the T.A.R.D.I.S! Haha! I mean this app really surprised me, at first it seemed to not have my location when I tried putting it in manually, so I gave up and let it find me itself. Then BOOM! Stars! And when I moved around the house I found planets! Then it showed constellations! It even shows you where each individual star, planet and (objects) like the International Space Station is going to go. I found my sign and my other family member's sign too! Which leads me onto talking about 'Staring' hehe basically favoriting lol whatever you like, star, planet ect. It also shows you where that star, planet ect is! It will create an arrow to help you find it again! It gives you facts about that star or planet and objects. Just so cool. The world-universe is huge! I mean it makes you think...were small, tiny little things in this vast place (X Files) 👽oh! Lol And the background sound is very nice. Totally worth getting. I can't wait to use this in my room at night in bed to watch the stars! Also it gives you facts about whatever planet, star, objects and constellation! I really really really really really recommend this! That's it coming from

I'm giving five stars just because this is definitely the best app for its purpose and it does everything very well. My only issue is it doesn't seem to offer an option to see all versions of some constellations that have different known ways of being drawn out. For example, sagittarius is often either drawn to look like a man-horse or to look like a tea pot, both equally well known, but is app only depicts the tea pot version.

For the Expert and amateur, alike, this app is rich in education, entertainment, and clarity! What an age we live in when the average human being can look to the skies for both not only enjoyment, but actual security as well. Our government only tracks 13% of our skies. With an application like this, that number increases our knowledge, but our very own existence, as well! For all the silly apps out there, this is a must have! Great job, creators!

Fantastic tool to see the celestial features around us. I really like that you show the ISS and Hubble Telescope. I also think it was a great idea to show nearby planets as images and that you can adjust the image size so it doesn't obscure the view of other bodies. Another really nice feature is the ability to adjust the brightness of the stars. That's very helpful in urban areas where you are only able to see the brighter stars. I wish you had a feature that would allow you to zoom in and out so you could see deeper into space. Overall, this is still a very cool app.

Takes some getting used to, but well worth it!

This app takes some getting used to - having to coordinate hand and eye movement to make it work. The music is unnecessary and tedious so I turned it off. Clever idea to make screen red for maximum visibility in the dark. The location finder is a bit off but I can either correct it or live with it. I have learned more about celestial objects with this app than all the many star maps I have used during years of watching dark skys. Those few negatives out-of-the-way, I must say this app should be factory installed on all new phones. And best of all it's free. It's terrific. Thanks developer!

This is a pretty good app. I first heard of it through an article in my local small town newspaper. I've had it on my iPhone for quite a while. This app comes in handy with that Smithsonian/Great Courses "Our Night Sky" material. Knowing the stars is something that people have lost as a basic knowledge. There are no guarantees that GPS will work at any time. Being able to navigate by the stars alone might save your life one day.

I felt compelled to write this review to express how much this app rocks! I've NEVER written a review before and I'm a very tech savvy 42 year old father who downloaded and shared the experience with my 6 and 3 year old. This was so much fun!!! She (my 6 year old daughter) could now visualize where these planets are that she's heard so much about in school. Hands down the most impressive app I've ever come across!!!

Downloaded this app when I had the iPhone3. Now I have the 6. It's been a long time and this app is wayyyyyy more than it was back then. Thank you Dev's for the awesome app and what I noticed was an update! My girlfriend and I LITERALLY went outside and explored the universe for an hour easy. I rated 4 stars because when I tried to use the calendar section to see into the future of what the universe would look like, didn't work. BUT DONT LET THAT STOP YOU! Get it now it's loads of fun!!!!!

No more telescopes. This was such a phenomenal idea!! Kudos to the day dreamer who brought this to my iPhone.
My only request for modification:
Please show me Pluto. It's out there somewhere. I get it. It's not technically a planet anymore, but there's a generation who grew up believing it to be one, and now it just doesn't feel right not seeing it.
A lonely orbiting ball of rock, but I'd still like to see it in relation to the rest of our phenomenal solar system. It is significant.
(Ummm just realized I'm using the FREE version, so I take it back if this is part of the Paid for version...)
FIVE STARS!! Because I've always been fascinated with what's beyond our atmosphere and you bring it to me in a way I would never be able to see with even a not-so-common household telescope!!
Cheers!!!

I love this. What can be improved? Never had it crash. options are night view with red screen, New Aget music can be turned on or off (I love it), you can overlay your surroundings with Sky view to see exactly which star you are looking at, size of planets and stars is adjustable. Hubble and ISS are nicely show, every thing has trajectory/path if you desire. Constellations shown. This is just so much fun and educational and free!

Point it in any direction at any time of day and you'll be amazed at what you'll see. Last night I watched the International Space Station fly over my house as I watched it in real time with this app. Ever wonder which planet or star is shinning so brightly in the sky? Just point your device in its direction and you can easily see what it is. And you don't have to go outside to use this app. Just sitting in your living room you'll be able to see what's in the sky. Point it towards the floor, the wall, the ceiling...in every direction the sky is the limit. Enjoy!

I downloaded this app while on vacation. My fiancé and I stayed in a small beach cottage right next to ocean away from bright ambient light and could see a ton of stars and we were trying to find the different constellations. The augmented reality combined with GPS location allows this app to know where you are and what constellations can be seen. All you do is point your camera at the stars and when you find a constellation the app will show its name and how it is formed from the stars. And it's free. Awesome !

skyview is the easiest and best stargazing app. it just makes it so easy to find constellations and planets in the night sky, and thanks to this app I was able to find and see Mars which was a pretty big deal to me. you can find the ecliptic of the sun and moon, when they will set, what constellations and planets you can find right above you , and more. I recommend this to anyone who is new or advanced in the subject of astronomy.

This is an impressive app that's very well done. It only gets four stars instead of five though because it's missing a couple of important features. Should be an option to turn off the camera view because I tried to show this lovely app to some people in the daytime and it's just impossible. Turning off the camera access through settings breaks the app to where it doesn't work at all. Or needs to be a camera switch on the dashboard. Also, while I understand the free version needs to be limited, the 88 constellation groups should be included if not the full complement of their artworks. That's a very small number of celestial objects. Other than these two important factors I found the app a delight to use.

Perfect!!! But one minor annoyance

This app is just flat-out stunning the locations are almost always accurate it makes stargazing so much easier and using this app you can see fascinating stars or even planets you would have otherwise never know were there. However there's on thing that kinda annoys me. The star icon is the same for all of them which makes looking at stars a little hard. But other than this it's a great app and made me an expert at spotting out planets.

Our class enjoyed this series of lessons especially about the things we use that were invented in space. We also liked learning about gravity and floating around in space. It was interesting learning about how the astronauts eat. We thought it was interesting that the astronauts wear diapers while doing long jobs in space. We have been exploring space while reading and doing work using the book and Teacher's guide "The Mission Possible Mystery at Space Station Houston" by Carole Marsh. It's a great app for locating everything no matter where you are. I got annoyed at the other apps that were out there and I've been happy with it ever since getting the freebie version I decided to buy the full release. Like anything new this takes a little practice but once you spend a little time, this is one of the most amazing apps! Just to know where Hubble or the ISS is at anytime in the sky is phenomenal. The center arrow guides you to find what your looking for and. As you scan the sky the constellations appear in beautiful 3D connecting the dots like never before possible!
The planets are tracking and incorporating the built in camera to track across the sky is brilliant!!!

Some recent reviewers seem to be having problems. If you look at the ground, the app will still display celestial objects. You can't see them in reality because the earth is in the way - or whatever else might be blocking your view of the sky. If calibration is off, try Tools > Calibrate Gyroscope - of course your iDevice needs to be new enough to have a gyroscope. The app also needs the correct time and your correct location or it has no way to determine what is in your view of the sky. Having said that, most all of the settings are automatic and the app works perfectly from the get go.

Version 1.3.1
This app is simple, entertaining, and interesting, which is a good combination. However, to really make this application stand out against all others like it, you should add a few more exciting features. You could add, say, an alarm that alerts when the ISS is going to be visible and/or an eclipse. What woud be even better would be if we could create our own (for our use only) constellations using the REAL stars. You could provide articles and pictures of space activity, and you could give more facts about the main sky objects. I guarantee these updates (or similiar ones) would make the purchase list rise. In fact, if it gets popular enough, you could even get money for it. If you all want these or similar updates, write a review stating so. The larger voice, the better results. Thank you.

This is the best app that I have seen in a long time and it shows pictures and times whenever you want to see them. When a constellation is in view it will animate the picture and show you what it supposed to be. When something that orbits comes into view you can touch it's orbit line and see what time that object will be at there. It also shows you info on whatever you click. Overall this is a great app and i think it's worth 20 bucks instead of being free but I'm glad it is free.

This isn't the most detailed sky map (like SkySafari, an expensive app, which I got for free on 20 July 2009), but for free, and at $0.99 for the full version, it's amazing! The augmented reality (AR) is what got my attention, but seeing the stars change to constellations is great! (Thanks Apple for putting this in the Staff Picks or New and Noteworthy - I forgot where, but that's how I found this). As I'm typing this, I'm deleting the free version and getting the full version, which I don't often do, but for 99 cents for such a great app, I'll make an exception. (At first, I was skeptical due to the all-5-star reviews; it seemed like yet another flood-the-reviews-with-fake-aliases scam, but they're well-deserved, and hopefully all real.)
PS: Please add iPad 2 support to this! (Not a separate app; please make this one a universal app to work on both.)
