Description

Koch Trainer is a morse code trainer that uses the Koch Method developed by the German psychologist Ludwig Koch in the 1930's. The method basically states that you should learn morse code at the speed you expect to receive, by training your reflexes to respond to code sent at 20 WPM you'll learn the code much faster.

Not sure it works

Not even sure if this is the app's fault, but lessons are poorly ordered. Why k and m, then k m r? I did fine on k and m at 20 wpm, but couldn't get past the 2 lesson at the same speed. Needs work, maybe custom lesson designs or choices because the current lessons don't work, push me too far ahead too soon.

Offensive

There is at least 1 very offensive word in this app. Very embarrassing to have someone watch my translation. Unless this is fixed and I am notified I can not and will not recommend this app.

Great tool for learning CW

The current version does everything I need it to do.
Uses Koch method and Farnsworth timing as recommended by most CW mentors. Works as advertised. Scratch pad feature is helpful as well.
I'm a novice with CW and this app is Definitely helpful in building skill.
Could it be improved by adding more features? Sure. But it does the job well and it's priced right.
Great job by the Pignology team.

Oops!

Been working great until latest iOS update to 8.0.2. Hoping to have a fix soon as I'm still learning CW and this is the perfect app for that!

Can't change the lesson

The app works slick until I go to change to the next lesson, it freezes and I can't go any further. iPhone 5 ios8

Nice

A good price, it is complete (no add ons), and seems to work well. TNX

Koch almost at its best??

I have yet to get 90% on my first lesson as I just got this app but I know I will get there. Being brand new to CW (morse code) I found the app a bit hard to understand as there are no directions on how to start... When I say start I mean the fact that it starts the first lesson with a "K" and an "M" but I have never heard either of those tones so how will I know which tones are for what letter???
After many internet searches I downloaded a different app so I could hear the letters before I actually start the lesson. This was an immense help.
I am teaching myself and have no mentor to go to when I have a question so with out the internet I would have given up on this app. Please add some "newbie" directions to help the persons (such as myself) know how to even begin to use this app. Otherwise it is a very good app & the only one available for the IOS system that I have found

Nice app

A good solid app for learning or practicing CW.
As the previous review said there are a few tweaks that would make it even better.
The scratch pad is worlds with the standard iOS keyboard. You do not have time to toggle the keyboard for numbers and punctuation. All standard CW letters, punctuation, should be on one keyboard.

Decent, but very basic

The app is good, and one of the only ones I have seen that uses the Koch method. There are definitely no frills and it is not very intuitive or smooth. There should be pause/play functionality on the built in scratchpad. It takes too long to go back and forth to the main page and hit pause or play. It would also be nice if the scratchpad counted up your mistakes and gave you a percentage - the idea is to move on to the next letter if you get 90% right. It should tell you where you are at.

Headphones only??

I have to admit, I was disappointed that the app required the use of headphones. Fortunately, I had a set from my old iPhone that worked well. If someone knows how to enable the speaker on my iPad for this app, I would appreciate it.

Like it

I really like this app. Do make sure you allow the code generator to finish loading before trying to listen. I think I made this mistake initially and heard nothing. I also tried it with phones, and after that it worked perfectly with or without phones, so not sure which was the problem. As a 13wpm General many years ago, I thought two characters would be nothing. Boy was I wrong. Expect (hope, no, expect) this app will get me to 20wpm by next Field Day. Great to be able to take it anywhere on iPhone4.

farnsworth spacing

I wish it had farnsworth spacing like G4FON's does. Much more helpful to me to listen to 30wpm characters but at 15wpm spacing. I am going to try Morse Elmer that I just read about in FISTS newsletter.

No sound

This would be a nice app if the sound worked. Unfortunately it does not. Kind of hard to learn code without hearing it.

Does the job...barely

Koch Trainer covers the basics, but it's a poorly designed app. The audio pops, it's much stronger in one ear, and it doesn't remember my settings when I re-launch it.

Great program

Great trainer. Works as it should on IPhone 3GS running 5.0. I have been looking for a Koch code trainer at a great price. Thank you!

Not for older devices (yet)

Bug prevents the app from working on older (2G) devices, but developer knows what the problem is, and is working on a solution. Very good customer service - quick response to question.

Nice tool. Weak implementation.

Crashes after 8 or 9 play sessions - which is OK, since I need a break by then anyway. (on an ipad...)
Only plays through one side of the headphones. This makes for some interesting experiments -- can I read code better with my left or right ear? Probably this is NOT the intended design.
The lesson selection wheel works rather poorly on the iPad for some reason.
It would be nice if the settings would remain from one session in the software to the next.
In spite of all these issues the software has already helped improve my code copying skills.

Good start

This is a good start. You might want to consider writing the next version to work on the iPad. You would have a ton of real estate to have the user type in the lower box/scratch pad and check against the upper one.
You would also have almost zero competition on the iPad since there are no cw tutor apps for it.

Crashes too often

Nice and simple - could be good, but too unstable - crashes regularly on my iPhone 3G - typically after 2 or 3 short 'play' sessions.
1 star till the reliability improves

Very nice app - highly recommended

While the Koch Trainer v1.0 is based on the Koch Method for learning Morse Code, it also adheres to the KISS principle. Nick has kept the interface very simple yet useful & functional. I look forward to ways he can improve such a solid v1.0! - Jim KB5AWM
