There's a button in the app that seems to be for seeing the comments on an article, but it just goes to a blank page. Can't see comments or make your own.

Oregonlive.com won't load in Safari

I avoid this app like the plague due to its perpetual crashing issues and typically load the webpage in a browser on my iPhone but for the past weeks that won't even load. In safari and chrome. Just opens and you can't scroll down or click links. Guess this is one way to increase paper copy subscriptions in the digital age.

Oregonian down again!

With no assistance from the Oregonian, delete App and reinstall on iPad to get it working again. Low rating for lack of App support by Oregon Live. Come On!! Going on three weeks and Oregon Live still does not launch. Are you going to fix it or should we all just delete the App? Oregon Live App will not launch on my IOS device. It has been done a little over a week. Does the Oregonian Staff ever look at the Reviews? I know they must not test the link, otherwise it would be operating.

Just click-bait

The Oregonian's web version is nothing but scandal-driven "news" designed to draw readers in for a click or two. (Search out John Oliver's brilliant piece on this type of "journalism"). They in turn can then show their advertisers what a great draw their site is - Not! The comment section under every article is a free-for-all with every unemployed knucklehead in the northwest logging on to troll away. Get your real news about Oregon somewhere else.
... Dec 2016... Now they've tried to update / improve their app and it's actually worse! How is that possible? What a crappy organization.

Bummer for the Oregonian(s)

My hometown/home-state paper, the Oregonian, has an absolute mess of an app -- uninspired design and painfully unreliable -- when it doesn't crash, it's horribly slow -- the "slideshows", which represent a significant portion of the total content, are effectively unusable on both my (old) iPad Mini 2 and my (newer) iPhone 6s -- a frustrating experience for Oregonians

Great app, with a couple of bugs

This latest version of the Oregonian app is MUCH better than previous versions. More stable, loads faster, generally really quite reliable. The only problems I have with it are: 1) You only get the latest 20 or so stories before you get to the top of the list. You should be able to scroll down farther and see more older stories but you can't. 2) Sometimes when viewing pictures in a story, the app just flat-out crashes and closes. These are not major gripes by any means... it's really quite a good app! Oh, last drawback... on lottery days, all you get is story after story after story reporting lottery numbers... Which is sad, saying lottery numbers seem to draw more attention than real stories and issues that are occurring in Oregon every day.

Comments doesn't work well

I enjoy being able to read and post comments, but the iPhone app makes that difficult. It won't fill in the name(s) of who you're replying to. If you try to edit your posted comment, it will time out on the edit before your 3 minutes is up. I've finally concluded that most commenters must be using the web site, and not this app.

It's good, how about a fix?

The app is fine I use it many times a day to give up on news in Portland and Oregon. You also do a good job getting me updated on news around the world although I generally use other apps for that. What would be really nice is for the app to rotate to landscape mode when I rotate my phone. It seems like you have actually remove this functionality because my phone has it built in. My hands get sore holding the phone in portrait mode and I have tendinitis. It's also real pain when I have to charge my phone in the court is coming out the bottom instead of from the side.

Best local news app I've used!

The site is fast-loading, easily navigated, AND they include a comment section. Needs a bit more content. Glad they sorted out the videos. (Before, all videos were "frozen" in vertical mode. Now if you reorient your phone, the video will fill the screen.) nice improvements to an already good app.

Thorough coverage

I have been using the O-Live app for years. During the Malheur Occupation, The O provided daily updates on the perpetrators, local victims, cultural and environmental impacts, and bringing in widespread points of view. It was splendid, addicting coverage. The daily news is reported with the same thorough care: information is updated, expanded, or corrected as needed. Love the app!

It’s a space hog.

I liked this app at first, particularly because you have to go out of your way to read the comments (which are terrible, just like at any newspaper site). But over time, I’ve grown irritated with it. First, I had to turn off notifications because the editors apparently only believe college sports are notification-worthy. Then I noticed that it’s taking up 1.1GB of space on my phone, more than any app other than my music collection in iTunes, which is ridiculous. When I tried to contact support about this, delivery of my email failed. So I’m done; I deleted it. So long, Oregonian, I won’t miss you.

Not Worth the data it is printed on

The Oregonian has surely fallen to a new low with this app. I'm not sure what the editors think they are doing but when you have 14 out of 20 of the top stories sports you are missing something and not letting us see all of your content. The only reason why most people read the Oregonian at all is because it is the daily news of record for the state. Not to read about the latest sports scores and who recruited who. Very dumb and frustrating

Lousy paper, lousy app

I'm deleting this one. This news app crashes more often than any other I have on my device. The editorial board seems to hate everything about the city and the state except the sports teams. Newsflash for The Oregonian: Sports stories are rarely real news. They are sports news for the Sports section. When six or seven of ten stories under the Top Stories category are about sports you are just being lazy. Don't bother with this app.

Use Apple's Share Dialog, Please

I save articles for offline reading by saving the article to Instapaper. Apple lets third-party apps add a share button to all apps for whichever apps utilize that share button. Oregonlive, however, restricts the user to their own three share choices: Mail, Facebook, and Twitter.
Please use Apple's dialog so we can customize. Otherwise I have little use for the Oregon Live app.
(Nice look and feel otherwise, but haven't had a reason to poke around much without the above feature.)

Version 3.2

Needs Improvement

The app crashes occasionally on opening, or randomly when navigating to articles. Sometimes it will crash in the same place when reopening, sometimes not.
The first screen of featured articles is dominated by sports, which doesn't interest me. An option for selecting or excluding topic areas would be helpful.
Videos start with a noisy ad that can't be skipped. Obviously they help to support the free app, but it's the same ad over and over for a product that doesn't interest me in the least. I try not to bother clicking on videos. Maybe if the app knew the user's interests, it could show relevant ads.

Ads over text, not updated as regularly as website

Version 3.1

This will kill off the paper for sure

I was sad to see the forced upgrade for my iPad, because I know from the iPhone version that a decent app has been ruined. The newest "upgrade" clunky-looking, hard to read, and difficult to navigate. I went to the phone app for a specific local story and found commercials instead of news. Since my choices seem to be updating to this garbage or deleting the app, I chose delete.

Still bad

Are you guys sure you read our feedback? It's WORSE! What was wrong with this app two versions ago? I live out of state and rely on this app for hometown news. This app is so bad I can't even read the news. I have't read a single article in three weeks. The app two versions ago was not broken, why did you try to fix it? The proofreading, or lack there of, is still absent. Sections with no content, precision scrolling, day old articles with no updates, most Timbers news are videos now, why? Lots of us like to READ the news. Want me to keep going? You guys should be ashamed of yourselves for not Beta testing this. Apps 101 guys, look it up. Please fix this poor excuse of an app!

The Anti News App

On 3/30 when I opened my Oregon Live app on my Ipad, i received a forced update to a new version. the new version, while it showed nice pictures on the home page, did not work when I when to the news index accessed by the symbol in the upper left. When I tried to access the news with of the various sections and their sub sections, I got a no content message. Not a very good start for a news organization., seems like the quality control is very lax, and the management release review is less than careful.
Today the content is coming into the news sections.
Article continue to be available only in a portrait mode, rather in the landscape mode which allows the user to user the flex cover to help hold the Ipad at an angle for ease of reading.

Gives me what I want

I downloaded this app because I will be living in Oregon soon and wanted to keep up with the news coming out of Portland and around the state. This app gives me exactly what I need....the daily news! I can stay up with current events and I've never had issues playing videos. While I prefer the old version of this app over the new update and would prefer it was simply called The Oregonian, the joy I get out of catching up with the news trumps any gripe I may have about this app. Do listen to your users and give us the landscape mode soon. Thank you and keep up the good work!

Horrid piece of garbage now

Unfortunately the old iPad version got pulled with the release of the new update, and the old app no longer works except to point you to this update.
The only setting available is to toggle "Big Pictures" on and off. There is no landscape mode available, and the new scheme is ugly and hard on the eyes. The videos clutter the "front page" instead of being tucked away in its own section; I want to read the news, that's why I got a newspaper app for in the first place. I prefer journalism over catchy eyecandy fluff. Bring back the old app! :-(

Terrible update

This app was my favorite local news source on my phone and iPad. With the new update the app no longer can be used in landscape mode in the iPad. More annoying though is that swiping through headlines requires surgical precision to not get it to move forward three headlines or bounce back to the article you were trying to move on from. My use of the app has significantly decreased as a result, and I'm trying to find a full on replacement.

One of the worst news apps I have ever seen

If I could give this zero stars, I would. First 5 or 6 of the top articles this AM are sports including high school. Maybe this is good because it keeps murders, politics, hijackings and world news off the front pages. Some sections like business, local and entertainment have no articles whatever. Lead pictures in about half of the articles and stories announcing Oregon's NCAA Men's and Women's track wins both have the same pictures of the start of a men's race. No pictures from the women' sweet. This is the Titanic of online news apps.

Not complete

Landscape mode is a must. I like the feature of small pictures on the iPhone, make it available on the iPad too! Keeping with the positive, the little there is, the number on the pictures is helpful, finally I know is there more then one picture. Some suggestions for improvements, besides what others have mentioned already;
- add page numbers when in a section for ease of scrolling
- add a favorites feature where we can select sections from the paper we frequently read, make that the start page
- make search working, I get the same list all the time regardless what search word is use

Disappointed

Oregon Live has been one of my daily news sources on my iPhone for several years, but since the new upgrade I no longer get my news from this source. Worst news Ap

The Ap worked the first time I opened it and then nothing. When I open it, it just says that it is updating and never does. When I did use it that one time, I agree with others here, the ads are unnecessarily large, poorly laid out, and the whole thing was difficult to use. Maybe this is an obvious sign...delete and use other news aps. There are plenty out there.

Another slow side scroll user interface.

Horrible. Side scroll interface makes it hard to find stories you want to read because they buried unless you swipe enough times to find one that is interesting.
On top of that it is slow. The headline of the story is slow to change from story to story when you swipe.
Older interface was better and only needed minor tweets not whole overhaul.

Numerous issues vs former app

After installing the new Oregon Live app on my iPad, it functions much worse than the previous app. It is stuck in Portrait mode, along with other user interface issues. Also, instead of providing an "update" to the old app, I was required to get the new app. I am deleting the new app and will use other sources for my local news. I sincerely hope this continued inability of the Oregonian to embrace technology and adapt to consumer usage trends does not result in its ultimate demise.

New version's layout is awful!!

I am not a fan of the new version. I wish I had never upgraded. The ads are huge & it's difficult to just get the top news like I would see on the website. Instead I am seeing a ton of sports stories when I really want the same content from the "main" screen as I had in the previous version. App won't rotate to landscape view, articles take too long to load now due to an abundance of new advertising, in app videos/ads continue to play even though I've moved on to another article, and the app has crashed multiple times.
Deleting this app - will just use the website instead.

Very few sections of V3 display anything

Version 3 has an interesting new user interface but very little of it actually works on my iPhone 4S. The section entitled "The Latest News" seems to be okay but almost every other section simply displays "No Articles Found". It would seem that this version has been released a bit prematurely.

Good

Now that it's fixed and updated ill counter my one-star review with this. I think this new version is easy to use and comprehensive. It's my modern way of reading the "paper" every day.

Crash bug fixed!

The latest update fixed the crash problem I saw when *I* updated my iPhone to iOS 7.0.3. These brats who called your app "worthless" have obviously never tried to support an app (or anything) during an OS upgrade. Good job.

Perfect for a non-subscriber like me!

I love this little app. I get my national news from other sources but this is a great resource for local and neighborhood updates. I quite enjoy the blog-ish reporting style in the neighborhood segments and the UI is easy to navigate. Totally glad I added this to my AM coffee line-up.

Videos?

I like it for sports articles only, so it does the job. However, when a post says (video) on it the video doesnt work. You cannot watch it! Which defeats the reason to have an app...to do things you cant with a newspaper! And those videos aren't posted in the [video] category. Some major upgrades are needed to the videos...calling Molly Blue! Go Blazers!

NEEDS IMPROVEMENT

My father, a WWII veteran, made the front page of the Oregonian on January 24, 2012 and I cannot find the article through the search engine.
People should be able to search for old articles without becoming frustrated.
Regarding comments about article comments, perhaps readers should be able to disable or enable comments.

It's ok.

Not a bad interface. But there's no way to comment or read comments. Also, for the local tab, there should be cities, not just parts of Portland.
Update:
Nevermind. This app is bad. I go to the actual website and find about 20 new stories posted. This app is about a
day outdated. There's no point of having this app if it only has stories a day old. Get a better system. I read the news for the content, and immediate news. Otherwise what's the point of this?

Good

Much better now that it seems fixed. I like the app for the same reason I like the paper version: I don't have to read idiot commentary. Not everyone cares what you think. If you feel that burning desire to spout your opinions, just go to the regular site

Yeah! Thank you for today's update

I just up loaded the latest update and it's working very well. I live this app as the news is totally current - updated throughout the day. I noticed there were no flashing ads either. Ive upgraded to 5* as this app is perfect for my needs.

Bugs, annoying ads detract from it

Terrible app. First off, the ads are annoying: they flash on and off the screen and I can't read the news and they don't go away, ever.
Second, when I open a lot of stories, the story loads momentarily and then I get redirected to a 'Twitter for websites' or 'video' page that doesn't actually load.
Third: it has been hanging and crashing on launch.
Fourth: it just crashes unpredictably an awful lot, too

Best local news app

I have several local news apps on my iPhone and this one has clearly the best content. It would be nice to have adjustable font. I can't read it at all with flashing ads at the bottom of the screen like the free ringtones one. Those ads could be a dealbreaker. Get rid of them.

Lose The Ads

Good app, not crashing here, but the ad banner along the bottom is annoying to say the least - I would happily pay to have it removed or hidden. Also as echoed by other users, it would really benefit from being able to access comments. Otherwise a solid app. Thanks!

Ver 1.0

Just basic functionality, but it works and how can we complain about free?
Hopefully the future brings iPad support, a more newspaper like experience ( I do not like the one article, one link approach - I'd much prefer a more page oriented approach on the iPad), and you've got to add access to comments.

Needs option to view comments

I mostly use your website to read sports articles and view comments. I find it really annoying that the mobile site doesn't allow me to view comments, and I was hoping this app would fix that. Deleted for now, I might try again in the future:

Two Minor Bugs

The app works really well, however I did find two small problems. First, when you first install the app, it will give you an 'unable to find news server" alarm on startup, when you reopen it it works fine. Other people have noticed this as well. Second, after trying it, I had to reset the iPhone. When I restarted it and opened the app again, it crashed. It continuted to crash until I uninstalled it and reinstalled and on first start I got the news server alarm again. Otherwise, it's a great app and long overdue.
