Description
Whether you are a student, teacher or parent, we all know the weekly spelling drill. Monday, we get our weekly words. Wednesday, we have our pre-quiz and Friday is the spelling test. Of course, during the week there are endless impromptu spelling quizzes, – at home, in the car, at dinner, before bed – you get the idea. Well, all that just changed – say hello to SpellBoard!Â
SpellBoard allows you to create any spelling quiz in any language. That's right, you could even use this for your Spanish class!
SpellBoard adds fun activities to your custom spelling lists. Including Word Search, Word Scramble, Alphabetize, Word/Sentence Matching, and Missing Letter puzzles.
SpellBoard provides a fast and intuitive way for you to enter your list of spelling words. All you need to do is enter the word (correctly spelled) and the grade level. SpellBoard will take it from there using iOS's built in speech technology* to quiz you on the words (if desired/needed you can record audio in your own voice as well). Optionally, you can enter a phrase for the word, an image, antonyms and/or synonyms and notes for the word. That's it! Now you are ready to study your words and be quizzed on them.
SpellBoard also adds fun activities to your custom spelling lists. Including Word Search, Word Scramble, Alphabetization, Word/Sentence Matching as well as Missing Letter puzzles.
And possibly best of all, you can share your quizzes with other SpellBoard users, that means only one person needs to enter the weeks spelling words and then share it with other SpellBoard, SpellBoard Buddy, or even SpellBoard Mac users.
Additionally, SpellBoard allows for multiple student profiles so you can track the performance of any student  across any number of quizzes. You can also track how well multiple students perform against a particular quiz.
SpellBoard also has a study mode where you can walk through a quiz seeing and hearing the word and phrase. You can practice writing the word on the virtual white board or connect to Wordnik to get a definition for the word.

Works well but...
I have used this app for years. It works really well. I enter the word lists and it generates activities for my students. However, recently it has started to show the words that are suppose to be spelled during a quiz. This makes the quiz unusable. Please fix this! Thank you for creating a great spelling app!

What happened?
I used this app a few years ago for my twins and loved it but now that I'm trying to use it for my second grader I can't get it to work. I've entered his spelling words but the activity button is disabled and there is no way for him to take a quiz. Not user friendly at all and as is, completely useless. Such a shame because it used to be a good app.

What happened
Have been using for years and love it. Trying to use yesterday and today and it keeps freezing and shutting down while I am trying to make a new list. Took me 5 tries, finally having to stop and save it every 5 words. Help

FRUSTRATED
I have been using this app for over 3 years now & this is the SECOND time I created over 25 categories for my son to practice his spelling words, I uploaded pictures for each words & then after sometime my entire categories disappear. The second time I double check & make sure everything was backed up to the cloud & NOW I go back to use the app & my entire list is gone. I have emailed the company in the past & no response. This is beyond frustrating & disappointing !!! 😡😡😡

Not user friendly
This app came with no directions. It is not user friendly and kid friendly. I certainly wish for a refund. If I change my mind if I ever figure out how to start an activity, I will let you know.

A great app!
This app helped my daughter with her spelling words and now my son uses it! It's great! Just a recommendation, when students are studying for the test, could you add the lines so students can practice the correct size of their letters? With an option to turn it off or change the size of the lines? The solid line on top and bottom and the dashed line in the middle. I love this app. Even without the lines, it's great! We can email the results to his teachers.

Soooo useful!
My sons have been using this app to study their spelling every day for the last several years.
At first, I recorded the lessons, and my kids loved how I was able to record funny sample sentences. As they got older they were able to record their own.
This app has been a terrifically useful tool for them, and the developer has been very responsive fixing the occasional problem.

This is the best Spelling app! Gives each of my kids the ability to practice & learn their weekly spelling words. The built in dictionary, activities (word search, word scramble, missing letter & new alphabetizing) makes it both worthwhile and so much fun! A+ App

Great App until automatic word definitions disappeared
My kids love this app! Everything was great with it until one day, the definitions link quit working. Additionally, there are no instructions on how to get this very important function to work. The app would be 5 stars but, once again, developers had to mess-up a really good thing.....

Phrase recording not working
Loved this app but the new update has a glitch with recording phrases. The mic wont work. Please fix ASAP!

Not a good app at all
I purchased this app to help my son with his third grade spelling, however the computerized voice is hard to understand pronounces words wrong at times and the app is not easy for kids to use on their own. It was a waste of 4.99 beware apps that do not have lite versions to try first. They typically are just out to make a quick buck.

Love it!
My eight year old daughter uses this to study her weekly spelling words. The activities help tremendously. We love it! We haven't had much use for the photo of the word but we're glad it's there just in case.
Wish list:
I wish there would be an easier way of uploading the words. Making a text file and adding it to iTunes, though effective, is tedious. I wish I could just email it or save it to "the cloud."
Can there be more activities? Maybe an hang man/or some similar concept? Or perhaps be able to select the ease of current activities?
I didn't understand that each list is independent from each level. Every new list I increased a level so by week 13 I had run out of levels! Wish there was an explanation before.
Over all, though, we love this app. Gets the job of learning custom spelling words done is a fun way.

Update: I updated to the new version hoping to import .txt or native "proprietary" files from DropBox but I can't. It won't read them. I tried multiple times and it just won't read it. I ended up purchasing the mac version and creating my list that way. Then exporting a native SpellBoard file and emailing it to myself then double clicking the file to open it in and was asked if I wanted SpellBoard for my iPad open it. I tried saving the native file to DropBox and it wouldn't read it. What a disappointment ... however, this is still the best app for studying spelling words. Though not the most intuitive.

Great Customer Service
My favorite thing about this app is that I can use my children's spelling lists from school. It is very easy to add words to the database, and create the quizzes for them. They really hate practicing their words each week, but after using this today they said the games were really fun, and it made it easy for them to do. I was able to create the quizzes on my iPad and it was pretty simple to share it with their devices. I was having a minor issue with sending some quizzes to my daughter's device, but after emailing palasoftware I was able to get it resolved. They were extremely quick in their responses to me, which I appreciated. I am certainly going to look at purchasing some of their other apps for my kids.

Good Purchase
(From a homeschool family) - This app allows for the user to input spelling words and then with those words the app creates a word search, a missing letter exercise, a word scramble, and finally a test for those words. I don't know if there is a limit of how many words you can add to the word bank, or if there is a cap number of list you can make, but so far I haven't experienced the app telling me I'm at my word or list limit. If this app continues to allow me to input it will be worth every penny as my younger children achieve the level of spelling my older child is currently doing (meaning I can reuse the test I create).
I would really like to see the programmers of this app add a couple of more challenges, but this app so far is the most customizable and useful spelling app I've found on iTunes. It is simple and to the point without flashy distractions for a very straight forward study.

Fantastic
This app is amazing. My son was studying his weekly spelling words - misspelled every one. A frustrated kid. 20 minutes on spell board and he was at 100 percent- and he had fun. We have fun making up silly sentences, it works!

Ds friendly app
My 8 yo daughter with Down syndrome loves this app. I can enter her word lists from school and she loves learning through the games. However, she figured out the pattern of the missing letter game and flies through the exercise because she knows it is always the middle letter missing out of all of the choices. If the developer would mix them up, I would give this 5 stars. Downloading the math app after I submit this as I have heard good things about it.

Has Potential...
One of the best apps for spelling BUT could be the best with a little work. Needs Leitner method, the ability to import from txt, csv and speech from a downloadable library More word games would be nice. For math buy their MathBoard, by far the best of the best math apps out there. This one needs a bit of work and hope that PalaSoftware refines this one like they did for MathBoard!

Great App
This is perfect for children with dyslexia. This app enables them to use multiple senses when studying their spelling lists (sight, sound, and touch when writing the word). The word search, missing letters, and word scramble are excellent games to help in the learning process.

You do NOT have to buy any additional apps, but I did have to look up the tutorial online to learn how to use the app. If you don't have the words and quizzes loaded properly it won't access the activities button. Not very user friendly for that reason.
With that being said....once I was able to load the spelling words in correctly it worked GREAT! My 8 year old now enjoys loading his spelling words each week (he likes to do the microphone and make up funny sentences to go along with his word). He practices his words each day of the week and takes the quiz each day for h

Nice idea, but . . . .
I wanted to take my son's spelling list, input it, and use this program to help him practice and test for his spelling test. It looks like it was built for that, and it is helpful. But it falls short - it will only let you practice once for each word by letting you write it or type it (not both as it shows on the screen shots). I want it to say it, spell it, say it, spell it, maybe even with an encouraging and funny voice? A little repetition would be helpful - something you could set up on the menus, so you don't have to repeat it if you don't want. In addition, when you go to the test, it will not read the writing - they have to type it. For a first grader, this could eat up a lot of keyboard learning time, rather than spelling practice. The background and screen is pretty dull looking too. It also does not have any kind of instruction or help file. That was really annoying. Especially for set up. I finally figured out that to input his spelling list, I had to add words that were already in their database, but in a different set of words. I couldn't import them. That's silly. So if they have a first grade spelling list, but the one his teacher gave him is for this week is a little different, I have to add ALL the words to his spelling list. Finally, it has a Word Scramble that has yet to work for us. It crashes the program every time. For $5? Not sure, but I bet there is something better out there for the money.

Superb!
This is an amazing app! One of the best ones I have purchased so far. You can record your voice saying the spelling words along with a sentence that uses the words. Recording the words is really easy. I bulk uploaded my sons entire 1st grade list so we can practice them over summer and easily added the recordings after the bulk upload.
There are activities to do with the words and you can see not only what words they misspelled, but how they misspelled them. Very easy to track their progress. I haven't tried it, but it seems like you can set up different users so if you have more than one child you can have them use the same app.

Upgrading to 1.7.1 wiped out all data, words, and spelling quizzes
I could not be more unhappy about the Spellboard upgrade having wiped out all data related to Spellboard. I had invested many, many hours in building quizzes, etc. Apparently, the iTunes backup does not include the Spellboard data, nor does Palasoftware advise you of this. This is a major problem, for which Palasoftware is responsible. Please, Palasoftware, if you read these comments, provide a means of restoring the lost data, or never again publish an upgrade that destroys your customers' work product.

Underwhelmed at $4.99
1) the whiteboard is just for scribbling. At this price ($4.99) I would expect character recognition, or at least a way to store my kid's entries so I can score them manually. It's just a scribble pad, and confusingly, it also comes up in test mode, where it has no function. This is not clearly indicated in the App store.
2) The App should be able to pronounce basic English words without the need for me to record them. Speak & Spell did that more than 25 years ago!
3)The Entry button is greyed out and you have to use the keyboard entry
4) word search put in multiple instances of the same word that would not validate unless I chose the correct iteration.
5) need to separate the scoring tools from test creation so the child user doesn't wind up in a confusing menu

Bug in Quiz Mode
I still like the app and use it weekly for my daughter's spelling words. However, in the new update when taking the quiz, the 'OK' button is grayed out. You can hit done on the keyboard to move on, but my daughter spent several frustrating minutes on this before we figured it out. This time would have been better spent actually taking the quiz and studying words. I recommend the app, but please address this disappointing issue.

My go to app for spelling . . .
I have been using this app in my classroom now since school started this fall. It has so many useful features and I appreciate the ease I with which I can load all of the iPads on my cart with the spelling lists. I need only create one copy to share with them all. The app allows the students different ways to practice and test themselves and their usage is reported. Quiz results can even be emailed. The new addition of word scramble was exciting. My first graders love to use spell board and their weekly spelling scores are super. This app is worth every penny!

Spelling is now fun
I gave 5 star bc my son now loves practicing spelling words and does great on his test. Only con is when I updated the newer version, I lost all 21 spelling word lists. That's over 500 words, recorded sentences :(

Awesome job!
I HATE studying spelling words with my son, I feel like its my homework too. Now I enter his words on Monday and can check on the app what days and times he has studied and see his score and which words he has gotten wrong. I love the word scramble option as well instead of just a word search. Great job on the app!! I highly recommend this to any parent with school age kids!!!

Very Helpful
This is a wonderful tool to help kids learn spelling. The ability to record the word aloud, and in a sentence, is also helpful. I can give my granddaughter the iPad and let her off by herself and practice her spelling words. She also likes the Word Search feature too. Nice job on this app!

Love it! Almost perfect.
One detail that my kid stumbles on is the green check or red "x" that appear after every attempt. As soon as she sees that she got one wrong she knows it's not 100% and becomes frustrated. If there were a setting to not display each word's status until the test was complete, that would be nice. Thanks for improving her spelling grades.

MUCH BETTER
Excited to see the changes on this version! The recorded words and phrases sound waaaay better and are now actually useful. I like the idea of being able to add a pic for each word. Havnt tried that feature yet though. Would like to not have to change the grade level for each word in the same list. We love this app!!!

Impressive
This app is not only a great way to test your child on their weekly spelling words, but it also has a couple of fun ways to study the words during the week before the actual test! They practice, and want to, on their iPads every morning during the car ride to school! Ever since we started using this app they haven't gotten less than 90% on their tests!

Truly a fantastic spelling app!!
First of all, we love this app!! With some tweaks and additions to the newest version it's Five stars for us! The only thing I'm not super fond of is the fact that the app automatically alphabetizes the quiz list and word lists. We enter the words in the order (numbered) that they are on my sons spelling words sheet and then they get mixed up by the alphabetization. Perhaps that should be an option?
It took me a bit of playing around and exploring to figure out how to sort word lists, but the new save sequence when entering words for a quiz makes everything a lot easier and productive. I also love, love, love, the option of adding a photo!!! That is a phenomenal option for children who have any learning challenges or even for younger children just starting out with spelling. It gives another level of association to words and spelling!
Thanks so much for a truly useful and enriching app! By the way… we also use and LOVE MathBoard!! Highly recommend both of these apps!!

Spell Board
I bought this because I really like another program from the same company my son uses to practice math. This program does well, but it locks up every time he goes to email the results to me. I have to restart the IPad to get it functioning again. It would also be nice to be able to input a batch to words at a time rather than for it to ask to add a new word each time.

Need one critical addition....
I LOVE this app and have used since I bought my iPad.
One critical add this app needs is the ability to choose and mix words into another newly renamed quiz. My daughter has about 5 spelling tests on one unit then a comprehensive test over the whole unit with about 15 random words chosen from the previous tests. I have to redo the "review words" each time.
Should be an easy add, right? =)

Great for learning!!!
I recently found this app and LOVE it. What child doesn't like to hear their own voice recorded? Along with helping her learn her spelling words, this also helps her come up with sentences for each one and all the while working on her speech. Our school district has a review of all the words they've had every 5 weeks, so it's awesome that it saves the previous lists so we can go through them again.
I would like to see some other things that you can do with this app to help learn spelling words though. Perhaps a "find the word" game or writing the words forwards and backwards. Removing a few letters and having them add them back is another idea. I think it would be great to see something different she can do every day of the week to make learning her words more fun.
I've already recommended it to the teachers at my daughters school and anyone else I can get to listen. Great job!

This Teacher Loves SpellBoard- a "Must Buy App"
I've been teaching for 24 years and agree with others that this app is truly phenomenal! I enter definitions, spellings, recorded words and sentences while he's in bed and give him the iPad and stylus to practice when he's awake. Now you can integrate science or social studies into spelling, that's fantastic! Best of all you can create the lessons whenever you have some free time and just let your child know the next lesson is waiting for them. On top of all these features the program tracks progress and details time spent studying and test results. If you are a busy parent, and who isn"t today, you can rid yourself of those feelings of guilt over not spending enough time helping those most precious to us. This app is a "must buy" for every busy parent.

Fatal flaws...
Based on the strength of another app by the same developer, I purchased this to help my kids study their spelling words. The interface is well conceived although missing some fairly obvious functionality and a little quirky in places. Namely, there should be a facility for automatically generating quizzes based on user specified criteria. There should also be a better interface for rapidly entering words in bulk, an activity that currently takes too long. Lastly, the application should apply a frequency score to missed words to help reinforce these.
But the fatal flaw... Twice I have spent a considerable amount of time entering over a hundred words into the application and twice the application has LOST about 2/3 of my work. In both cases I have entered the words correctly and even added the words to quizzes that I was able to launch and examine.
I am sorely disappointed with the obvious error in the application and cannot stress enough that you should AVOID THIS APP until the developer addresses this most serious and fundamental flaw!!!
This app has great potential and so it is a shame that it is COMPLETELY UNUSABLE in it's current state.

Invaluable
Invaluable learning tool for our children. We spend 15 minutes or less to input each weeks words, and children use the app for 15 minutes to learn (daily). They come home on Friday with perfect scores!

Love it!
This is a great app. I purchased this for creating quizzes to use with spell board buddy in my classroom. I like that you can customize your word list with the spoken word and a phrase using the word in context. I think this will be great way to practice spelling. I also really like the ease of sharing quizzes and emailing the results of a quiz that has been taken by the student. It will be a great way to share progress with parents. App developers were also very quick to help with questions and the few problems I ran into. I have already recommended this to other teachers. Keep up the great work with your educational apps!

My 5th grader loves this app
This app is a must for parents and kids! There is room for improvement, but this app lets you type in spelling lists and voice record the word and/or definition. It allows the student to practice before the test and type or write the answer. This app is well worth the money!

How can learning be so much fun
I purchased this for my 6 yr old . Every week learning our new spelling words was torture . I saw this and decided it was worth the $4.99 . She set up her new words for the week and wow she thought it was the greatest. She can make her own sentences with her new words (in her own voice). She practiced the words 5 times and then had to show dad how much fun it was. It's a must buy and it allows fun learning time with your children.

Love it for my first grader!
This is a really cool app! I love the voice recording. I also love how they can practice before they take a quiz. I can program as many weeks of quizzes that I'd like. The definition of the word if needed was an added bonus that I didn't expect. Worth the money in my opinion!!

Would easily be a 5 star app if they preloaded more words
Palaware, please please add more word list to be downloaded. This is a very powerful app. Easy to create customized spelling list, add your words, record your voice for definitions and spelling words. But will less than 250 default words, they put most of the work back in your lap. The "white board" is a great addition to this app over others.

Wonderful for kids with learning challenges
This app is fabulous for my students with disabilities. They love that they can hear my voice saying the words and they love writing with their fingers. It is less like studying and more like fun :) I highly, highly recommend this app for anyone studying spelling words.

This is an ESSENTIAL app if you have school age children
I have a lot of apps for my kids, and this is the one app that we use every single week. With the new text import feature it saves a significant amount of time vs typing all the words in on the screen, particularly if the words you want to use are already on your teacher's website or on any other spelling assistance website. My kids love the 'write it out' feature, because if they think they know how a word should look they write it out to check their own work, all the while building their spelling confidence.
I had a few questions for the developer, and they were answered well above my expectations, both in speed and thoughtfulness. Its obvious he cares very much that the users are happy with their use of his application.

Bless You
This app was actually an answer to prayer for me. My daughter has Down syndrome and it is so hard to keep her focused when we are working on spelling homework. This fantastic app has made practicing and testing fun and I couldn't be more grateful. I recommend it to other moms who have children with varying exceptionalities. Homework time is fun again in our house! Yeah!

Serious shortcomings
I've been using this app with my kids for around a week and I am less than thrilled with it. First, when they say you can add any word from any language, they are correct. You can also add any incorrect variant of any word you are trying to teach. In my mind, a simple spell check dictionary would have been an obvious option to include. When you have to add 30 or more intermediate to advanced words for advanced students, this would be very useful and the option to turn it off or ignore it should have been added.
It requires way too many button pushes to add words to a quiz.
Then there is the periodic crashing while creating quizzes, which is greatly irritating when you've added a bunch of words with audio. It should save after each word, but it does not. It does not support landscape view (but the index card rotates sideways). It is also too easy to delete quizzes, I quickly discovered after handing the iPad off to my middle schooler (who is usually tech savvy).
Great idea, poor execution. I guess if you just want to download quizzes, it works well for that. I wanted this app to upload words on my kids spelling quizzes and I believe this app isn't ready for prime-time and isn't worth the $5 price tag.

Great app
This app is really great. It allowed me to customize spelling quizzes for my daughter based on her spelling list. It allows me to record the word for her to listen to and replay if needed. You can also record a sentence using the word if you want which is nice. I can setup multiple quizzes based on dates for her to do every day...saves a lot of time for me. The best part is it makes doing her spelling quiz FUN!!!

Love it!
My son enjoys studying for spelling tests much more with this wonderful app. He gets a kick out of hearing my voice pronouncing the words along with silly sentences to keep him interested. It is admittedly a little labor intensive to enter the words myself but totally worth it to help him prepare for the school spelling bee. I've recommended this app to another mom and she also loved it.

Not sure it is worth the money
First exploration of the application after buying it, I discovered that we have to enter in all the information. Unlike other apps by this designer, we have to supply all the information. Would have been great if words are preinstalled. Felt it was very labor intensive. After putting in my 19th word of the first quiz (recording etal), the app unexpectedly closed and I lost everything! Had to start all over again. I am not enjoying this. I thought this app would assist me, but I find it is much faster to write out the words on a paper. Still trying to figure out what the app actually does.

Great app! has a few issues to fix
This is a great app for my third grade son - I can update each week. recently it's crashing more which needs to be fixed. If you put in 25 words in a quiz and it crashes - you have to start all over again...very frustrating. otherwise very useful! I have been in contact with customer support and they are extremely responsive and working on the issue.

Awesome app but not quite 5 stars.
This app is amazing but my son was asking "how do i turn your voice off" i wish there was an option for that. I would also like to see an option where we can download what others have created. It is a lot of work to make all of those words and record each one.

Must have!!!
This app. is great. My son is in the second grade and he loves to take his spelling list and create the list on my iPad using this application. He even creates his own sentences. Studying his spelling is now fun for him. The other day he created his own list of words that he wanted to learn. I don't see my iPad as much now, but it's worth it.

Amazing
This has got to be the most amazing app I've come across! As a homeschooling parent, this blows away all other spelling teaching methods! Goodbye boring white board drills...HELLO spelling board. My kiddo loves practicing his weekly sight words, and I like that I can make up my own quizzes and record both the word and phrases. Every app that these developers create is golden. A must buy for educators and parents alike. Really folks, don't think twice about this app...as I have bought and tried them all and none can even come close to this one!

Perfect!
This is such a great app for any age, younger kids can practice writing the words as well as typing them. You can make and keep an entire library of words to make weekly or daily lists from. We do Sight words, phonics group words and spelling words. It tracks test scores and mispelled words which we put into a new list to practice again. This is a great app! It also stores information for several different kids which is great because they all have different lists of words to learn. Mathboard is great too! The possiblities for IPad to be a powerful, functioning, child friendly, engaging, educational tool are limitless... I cant wait to see whats next!

Beautiful App
This is a beautiful application. It has a few of weaknesses that I hope the developer will address.
1) Syncing list between devices cannot be done wirelessly. You have to plug them into iTunes.
2) The training mode is nothing special. Just looking at the words and practicing.
3) The iPhone counterpart is crippled not to be able to create lists. This would be fine if this iPad program acted more like a test online publisher. But it doesn't.
4) There are only 2 downloadable test from the developer.
But I cannot stress how beautiful this application is so far. I am sure the developer will continue to enhance it, and I look forward to the updates. If you only are going to just be using one iPad device, and you are mainly just using this to do practice spelling test, then download this application now and support this developer.
But until these issues are addressed I am going to continue to use a free iPhone application instead. The free application is not as nice as this application in design, but it allows for easy sharing of tests between devices and it has a much better training mode.
