Version 5.1.1
Been using this app for a while and I travel every week and it works very well! Getting better each update! I even make reservations now and not bad! Looking forward to the new booking feature they say is next! Make sure you can book with miles! Every one complaining blows my mind, if it is slow maybe it is phone and not app 😀. There is some features like flight status that shows maps on other airlines apps that are nice!

Version 5.1.1
Could not check in because my son and I have the same first name. One would think that if you have correct name and confirmation number you could check everyone in and get boarding passes. Tried to add boarding passes to apple wallet and their system is having trouble. Can't add passes from email link. For such a large company they sure don't seem to make boarding their planes very easy.

Version 5.1.0
It's Tuesday and I need to check a flight for Thursday. In my old age, I had forgotten why I didn't have an AA app. Always was my favorite airline, but health kept us from flying for a couple of years. A clunky, non-intuitive, basically useless piece of code is offered. The programmers either aren't using iPhones or the don't care that the end users have better apps available. Removing - again - and hoping someone at AA actually reads these reviews.

Version 5.1.0
I use this app a lot and it mostly works fine and fulfills my needs.
However, lately I have been getting an intermittent and annoying issue. This issue occurs when I am trying to check in for flights, and I get listed as two identical persons checking in. For example when checking in for an international flight it asks for my passport information twice. Since I don't want to risk any issues with the flight, so I don't use the app to check in. This needs to be fixed.

Version 5.1.0
Never really had a problem with this app until I had a flight cancellation due to weather. Even days after I made it to my destination it was still trying to alert me of the cancellation and the rebooked flight. It was even showing information for the canceled flight the day I went to check in for my return flight.

Works well but...

Everything works great, I always fly AA only thing I would change is having in app search and booking for flights instead of switching to safari for booking flights get a little hectic to keep swapping between the app and the internet. Also, having to logon a second time to my AAdvantage account on safari after having been logged on in the app can get a bit tedious. Otherwise, the app is great you can view seats and other details.

Version 5.1.0
Most of the time when I use the app, it frequently crashes or says it cannot connect to the American Airlines network. Even when it does work, the app offers almost no benefit to customers besides allowing them to look up their travel reservation. Pretty much anything that one would assume the app would do (check bags, etc.), the app doesn't actually do, forcing you to call their horrible customer service line or speak to one of their rude agents in-person.

Version 5.1.0
I have other airline apps and this one is not worth the space it takes up on your phone. Like others I thought it would save time, but it did not. The app did not pull over my TSA per check information so I waited in line only to have everything reprinted. The app also did not notify us of gate changes prior to boarding so we had to keep checking the boards as the gate changed three times in one hour.

Version 5.1.0
My Husband and I used this app while traveling on our honeymoon. It worked great and has we not been at the gate it would have gave us all the information we needed.
We were switching airlines halfway through the flight from American Airlines to British Airways it does not give you any details except time and flight number for airlines other than AA.
To combat this I just downloaded the BA app, it would have been nice to only need one app.
We did not use the mobile boarding pass but we could have while traveling inside the United States.
We especially liked the bag tracking feature to see if our bags were loaded on the plane or if they were unloaded this was the main feature we used.
Also we had one delayed flight, one gate change. The app alerted us immediately after they made those changes in the airport.

I tried to use the app to change my seat after the website kept "experiencing difficulties". Unfortunately, my experience with American went from bad to worse when I tried the app. While the app still failed to change my seat, it checked me in without confirming that I wanted to be checked in. So, now I'm checked into a middle seat without any way to change it!!! Horrible customer experience and I haven't even boarded the plane yet!!!

Keeps getting worst. Fails a lot. And the service just got to Class Action levels. I am in the queue to board plane and the pilot announces he'll close door in 3 mins, like those waiting have any control or like the queue isn't the only way to board. A record low.
I expect an app from an airline to have as first priority allowing quick check in. This one does remember my info and crashes near the end in a long form.
---Updated Jun 26 2017: tried to check in and after I submit every but of info, it tells me it can't. It's been 3 years now. I will start choosing my airline based on their mobile experience. AA, to you, you'd need to be at least $50 than the next best now. $$$$$ lost.

Every time I try to use this app it crashes. It won't let me log into my account to get my boarding pass. It won't let you pay for luggage when checking in as well. I think with American Airlines being apart of the one world airline, it would look at the other one world Airlines to see what they need to be doing. Alaska airlines is so much better than this crap app. I even shut my phone off as well as reinstalling the app to see if it would work... nope. Worthless app!

Version 5.1.0
I think this app is great. It gave me all the info I needed to not lose my sanity on a recent trip filled with weather delays. It updates in real time for delays, often before the gate monitors did. It let me track my bags when I missed one flight and had to catch another, and even gave me a suggested alternate flight which let me go straight to that gate and get one of the few remaining seats (sorry, other travelers who didn't have the app). Stop all the complaining, people! It's an app, not a personal concierge!

Version 5.1.0
This app is useless because it is so slow to update with information. For example, my bags are still showing as being in another city, but actually left that city on a flight 12 hours ago! American just called to say they found my bag and are going to deliver it. Also, the notifications with flight updates happened well after we received live info with updates (like saying we were going to takeoff at a time that had already passed 5 minutes ago). The info in the app is so old that the app is really useless.

American's new slogan should be "fly with us at our convenience. Not your convenience." Literally the worst airlines to fly with. The app is complete junk and nonfunctional.
Just like every other "service" that American provides, it's all for show. By definition it is an "app", but clearly they invest very little money into the actual functions that an App provides.
Just like their frequent-flier program, all the benefits are in name only. "50 complementary upgrades" that can never be used, points that can't be redeemed (and now expire) because of so few available seats you will never find a seat to use the points in.
And now an App that can be touted in marketing but can never be used. NEW American Airlines is complete crap!

Version 5.0.0
Imagine if there was a single feature that would (literally) bring in more money than any other feature, and that feature was neglected for nearly three years. No need to imagine, this is reality. There is no other mobile capability that would bring in more revenue than native flight booking, and for nearly THREE. YEARS. this app *still* throws you to a mobile web wrapper. They say they're working on it, but they haven't shipped this for threeeeee years. This timeline is truly beyond parody and they'll offer tickets to the moon before I can book them from my phone natively.
So shameful.
Bottom line: American Airlines does not take digital seriously, period.

Version 5.1.0
The newest version is terrible. American needs to do seriously take a look at the Delta App and fire their current designers for User Design and Experience. For example, their is not even an easy way to Contact American through the App! There should be the ability to contact quickly so a phone number appears for a call. This is basic 101 for these Apps! I am a Platinum on AA and Delta is getting much more of my business now purely for the fast they make their App easy to use for business executives like myself. Wake up AA!

Version 5.0.0
This was my first time flying American - being a frequent Delta flyer, I expected the American App to function much the same as Delta's app. The night before my flight, I went into the app to check-in and get my boarding pass. The app wouldn't let me check in, so I went onto the website and checked in there. I printed off my boarding pass just to be safe, which was good because I was never able to access it on the app. The app is an absolute nightmare and has ensured that I probably won't fly American again. The airline itself is perfectly fine, but their app is easily the worst app of any major airline I've flown. I gave this app 1 star because I can't give it 0. If you are flying American, plan on either print your boarding pass off at home or get to the airport early and check in the old fashioned way. It would be better to have no app at all than this one. When I fly Delta, almost everyone uses the app at the airport - when I was boarding all my American flights, I noticed that no one was using the app. Maybe the airline should take a hint?

Prettier, but a CRITICAL feature is now gone...

Version 5.0.0
I almost NEVER review apps, but I fly often on AA and use the app a LOT. I upgraded the app and now one of the most basic features appears to be gone.
I connect through DFW whenever I fly because I leave out of a small airport without other direct flights. Therefore, I always require a boarding pass for my connecting flight.
THIS FEATURE IS NOW GONE from the app it seems. Ive tried even with an Admirals Club agent and no success. She also said she has worked with MANY customers with the same issue and nobody has been able to locate the function. It is either truly gone or it is so buried it is functionally gone.
I am an app developer so I did what I call a traceroute for navigation. From the connecting flight screen, there are a grand total of NINE potential navigation elements except forward and back, and none of those elements contains the boarding pass option.
This is very likely a BUG and should be corrected ASAP. Cost alone for reprinting of boarding passes plus agent time has got to be a huge financial impact when multiplied across the thousands of flyers each day. This is basic QI in app development for core features and demonstrates a lack of attention to good programming practice.
Please take this review constructively as communication to the developers. Please fix.

Be ready to be frustrated. Frequently you won't be able to change your seat because you have to check in first. And you can't check in because you need a seat assignment first. But I do have a seat assignment. It says right here on the app. Ohhhhh, but you don't. So you call in and are promptly instructed to use the app, or webpage to check in/change seats. After 15 minutes of digging through the bowels of the AA app to *finally* find a phone number, the automated computer will tell you to go through the app or web page to address your problem. Once you finally hold your mouth just right, stand on one foot and breathe only through your left nostril, you *might* get to talk to a living breathing person in India, but all they want is for you to spend your valuable time helping them troubleshoot their crappy app and backend systems. They can't/won't actually *DO* anything to help. In the end, you will need to get to the airport super early to check in the good old fashioned way. And since you weren't able to do anything until immediately before the flight boarded, you'll spend the next 4 hours sandwiched in between two behemoths. Thanks American. I'm actively looking for a new carrier. Perhaps one who's app/back end systems aren't written by a couple of high school kids in their mom's basement after soccer practice.

Ability to track your bags

Version 4.9.0
I don't fly Delta so I can't compare this app to theirs. For me, as a frequent AA flyer, I find this app very helpful. I can easily see my upcoming trips, progress towards gold status, get my boarding pass, see where my plane is coming from and if it's on-time, change seats, and best of all, track my bags. Once your bags are checked in, the app shows the time they are loaded on the plane and off loaded and reloaded if you have a connection. When you reach your final destination you already know if your bag was on the plane and you can see the time it was off loaded. It not only tracks my bag, but everyone traveling on the same reservation. That way you aren't standing around watching the luggage carousel go round and round hoping your bag magically appears. It will show gate changes and flight updates, but you have to turn this feature on. They are the push notifications from the app. Overall, this app is very helpful.

Just to get it out there...your review of "I LOVE it" or "I HATE it" doesn't help anyone. Be rational and tell me why.
Now that I've said my peace, The app is fine...not great, but not horrible. For the average flyer, I think it's one of the better airline apps out there in terms of ease of use and intuitiveness. It's easy to check in to a flight and grab your mobile boarding pass - and more importantly FIND that boarding pass easily when you need it. (On iPhones, it easily adds to your wallet) For the basic info of a trip, it is a good app.
However, to the level of 'helpful' to the average traveler, it is same level of 'not helpful' to the frequent traveler. A frequent traveler wants to know, "Where am I in line on the upgrade list?" or "How many first-class seats are still available?" And they want to know more than just 2 hours before their flight. Why? What's the big secret? All other apps will show you 'where' and 'how many' the moment you check in.
This unfortunately goes a lot deeper than just an app or website. In my experience, AA offers the lowest level of communication to its customers of all the airlines that I fly. (Delta, Southwest, United - I average around 100 segments per year)
I wish that this review could be taken seriously by the powers that be, but alas, I'm certain nothing will come of it and it will just end up as another vent.

This is not about the app but this airline is horrible. So our flight was delayed 7 hours. When the plane finally got here and we got on and got out to the runway the pilot came over the intercom and said that they where our time and had to bring us I . They had cancelled the flight. When people got off the plane they asked where the luggage would be. The person at the front desk had no answer and was just being kind of rude about it. Every in the line waiting to get info for hotels, rescheduled etc... is miserable because it's late and the flight was cancelled. American Airlines told us nothing about what was happening.... the crew etc... didn't even know any information. Never fly American Airlines. ever since they bought US Airlines or whatever it is called. American Airlines has gone down the hill. Never fly this airline...... the app though is and okay app, so the app I would give 3 stars but the whole entire airline I would give less than zero stars!!

I see reviews here giving great praise for the AA app and don't understand. I recently changed loyalty after 15 years from UA to AA. If you want to see a really good app, try UA. The one thing I have missed from UA is their app. The USAirways app was probably the worst app ever made by an airline, but AA isn't far behind. The AA app is difficult to navigate, limited functions to make changes, updates flights slow, doesn't allow you to just return to home page with ease, and is just plain cumbersome compared to others. I don't understand how hard it is for AA app developers to look at the functionality of other app provided by carriers and try to duplicate it. It's as if high school students created the aa app as a project. Believe me, try the UA app and there is a remarkable difference. Anything you can do on the UA website, you can do on their on their app. Time to catch up American! Your app is as outdated as your MD-80 aircraft and ancient reservation systems Sabre!

It's okay when it works...

I use this app constantly for work, along with a few other airline apps. I have no idea why, but for some reason American is just so far behind in technology and reliability it hurts. Everyone else has it figured out but American keeps tripping each step and doesn't seem to care.
Firstly, I don't even know why they have an app in the first place. Aside from viewing boarding passes, just about everything else the app takes you to the mobile website. It gives you so much grief just to change a seat as well. That is if it lets you change it to begin with. If half the features are redirected to the mobile site there's no reason to have the app to begin with.
Worst of all though is how often technical issues occur. I'm not talking about the app crashing, there's none of that, I'm talking about the servers just plain not working. You can't check in at times or do anything because they "are currently experiencing technical issues". This isn't just a 'things happen' scenario, this happens frequently. Other airline apps just work and don't seem to have these issues. I don't know why this is so hard for them.
In the end though, this IS the American Airline app, so if you're flying with them you're stuck with it. My suggestion, do everything on their website beforehand and pull the info up later on.

Pretty good – could use more features

This is a pretty good app overall. I have not used it to book personal flights yet but I do like the convenience and easy navigation for existing reservation handling. Bookings done through my company's travel agency portal (Concur) show up very quickly so long as one's frequent flyer number is on the reservation. The integration to apple wallet is particularly useful as boarding passes will then automatically show up on the lock screen within a few hours of flight time. Easy to change seats, request upgrades, etc. for road warriors.
The only thing missing which I think would be handy would be the ability to rename each active ticket/itinerary to something more recognizable. For instance, I'd like to rename "LAX/ORD (KGBJGY)" to "Q4 Business Review". For those of us with the number of active trips open at any one time, this would be very helpful.

My granddaughter flew to California (Sacramento). She is 15 but when I booked her through a travel agency and was lied to about her being a minor and would be taken care of. When we took her back to go back home to the east coast it was the same day that Delta's computers crashed and the line to check my granddaughter in was so long we didn't get up to check her in in time to make her flight. We were booked for the next day as standby at 4:00 am. Rose checked us in and was VERY kind and marked her as a minor to be helped but not taken to the connecting flight in Dallas. My granddaughter didn't make it on the 6:00am flight but was moved to the 8:03am. The plane had a flat tire and the flight was changed to 9:50 making it too late to connect in Dallas. I called AA on the phone and was being booked through Arizona to Chicago then home. In the mean time Rose saw what was happening and came up to help us again and booked her back through Dallas with a little more layover but it went straight to her home!!!! This time no standby either!!! I just have to tell you that as a grandmother, Rose was our special angel sent by God to help us get her home safely and on time!!! Thank you is not enough to describe my gratitude!!!! Rose will always be in my heart and prayers!!!!

Beware! Mobile boarding pass does not work with multiple passengers on same reservation. It let's you check in and request a boarding pass from the app, but when you arrive at TSA to check in, surprise, no boarding pass for the second passenger on the reservation. Do not rely on this app for a mobile boarding pass!!! Had to get back out of the TSA line and print out a boarding pass for my daughter, only to find out it was too late, 43 minutes to flight now. Fortunately, the flight was running late and we were able to get a manager to get us a boarding pass. Called AA app support the next day and they told me this is a known issue. Too bad they don't tell you on the app store in their description. I was able to find this information by digging through the Iphone FAQ on the American Airlines website. " Q: Why did I not get a mobile boarding pass? A: To be eligible for a mobile boarding pass, you must be in a single passenger itinerary and departing from and connecting through TSA approved cities" Ok, enough of a rant. Who thought a mobile boarding pass app could end up making you miss your flight even after you checked in the night before.

I fly weekly for work and frequently for pleasure as well. As a passenger, the 2 key times that I care about are (1) baggage cut off for checked luggage and (2) boarding time. Recommendations for improvement:
** The mobile boarding pass does not display BOARDING time or Record locator on the main screen, you have to press the 'More Information' icon to see that information
** On the home screen, display boarding time and hours before boarding side by side instead of as a toggled display, the animation is really unnecessary.
** In the ticket details view, make gate, boarding time, passenger status, zone and seat very prominent. The info should be very easy to see at a glance.
** I would prefer to receive notifications about boarding time (instead of flight time) to help ensure I am at the airport and gate in enough time without having to do any calculations in my head.
** Make a simple consolidate option for sending itinerary information by text and allow the user to select an individual segment or mulitple segments to include. Example:
Depart: July 17, 2016 BOS @ 2:15PM
Arrive: July 17, 2016 LAX @ 6:00PM
** Make it easier to delete expired boarding passes, add the option from the home screen.

I am an Executive Platinum flyer on American. A little bit by choice, but also because they are the only major hub out of CLT, and until recently, the only direct route to DEN, where I work. As a frequent traveler, the app is fine. I can get an e-boarding pass fine, if you have it turned on for auto updates, your gate and departure info is always right.
My main issue with the app is trying to book a flight from it, or the mobile site for that matter. I hate that they group the round trip together. I want to be able to select my departure trip on its own, and then the return trip next; just like the website. It's not convenient, it's not user friendly, and it's not a cohesive experience on multiple platforms for the end user.

The app simply doesn't work. I try and pull up my e-boarding pass and, w/o fail, it either freezes the entire app or (more commonly) pulls up and then goes away within minutes, leaving me scrambling in line to reboot the app and re-pull up the boarding pass. Moreover, the app frequently doesn't have the correct airplane information: confirmed upgrades on planes with no first class (my favorite), incorrect gates, inaccurate standby and upgrade lists, etc. The app just doesn't work.
Yes, running an airline is complicated. But, a functional app would actually save AA time and resources - and with a string of record profits, and an apparent race to the bottom on nearly all services not targeting full paying first/business class passengers and Club members, perhaps it's time to refocus a small fraction of earnings on improving the worst airline app ever launched to the public.
Did we need another reason to regret the hyper consolidation of the airline industry? If so, this poorly conceived app is one. Shame on AA and the regulators who caved on their latest merger.

I was checked into this flight on my mobile phone and through your app. I arrived to the airport with plenty of time so I decided to get something to eat. While eating I was checking your mobile app, and said my flight was on time and gave me a count down until boarding time. I finished eating and went to my gate at the time it should have started boarding. There was no one there. I checked a monitor and it said the flight was canceled... Your mobile app still said on time and boarding until 11:05 when the flight was at 11:20. By the time I figured this out and got to an attendant. The flight you "switched" me to through Chicago was gone. I'm now on a flight going through charolette and arriving I. DC over 4 hours later than my original flight arrival time. I am now going to miss one of my two business meetings planned for this trip. I was not sent an email or notified on any way that this was flight was changed or canceled. I am extremely disappointed with your mobile app and your airline in general.

I think this is one of the better airline apps out there. It's user-friendly, attractive and it's usually pretty up-to-date. It's pretty hilarious to me that people are providing ratings based on experiences that have nothing to do with the app itself, or because they couldn't figure something out that was their own fault.
There are just two aspects that are annoying: One, if your flight changes something about its schedule, the warning message continually pops up the next few times you open the app. The message is nice, but once or twice is fine. Also, it would be nice if it could at least explain what changed (flight times, seats, etc.). Secondly, I have had continual frustrations trying to view the seat maps. It always makes me log on via the desktop site which seems ridiculous. But all in all it's a great app!

First the app - what is wrong with you? I sign up for AAdvantage, load the app, search for my itininerary which it finds... Then it says I have 0 (zero) upcoming flights. 2 legs out. 2 legs back mind you... Ok. I can figure this out. Search again and add the eticket to passbook. I'm smart right? Nope. 3 out of 4 can be downloaded to my phone. One leg requires actually speaking to someone at the counter. I said counter. Not kiosk. The kiosk has no idea who I am or that I flew in yesterday and want to go home. Don't worry, it only took 25 minutes to speak to a human being to get one ticket printed. I don't check bags. Fun.
Now the blood boiling part. American Airlines cancelled my flight on the last leg. I'm stranded in Philly for the night with a 9am flight home. I ask what they can do about this and they tell me "I can get you a blanket of you like." 😳😖😫 Really?? Are you kidding me? Worst customer service ever. They want me to sleep on the floor. I'm sorry but I do still retain my dignity and pride.
All I know is that when I fly Delta I don't have these problems. Their app works. Try Delta everyone and save yourself the headache!!! I just paid $199 for a room so that I could take a shower. They threw in a blanket for free.

I like having the app available at my finger tips but there is some room for improvement. (UPDATE: after booking a flight through the app. I should be able to return to 'Home' without clicking the 'back' button, which may cause a card to be used twice for purchase). I should be able to see the duration of flights. Also, there should be a way to contact the app technical support team directly from the app to prevent me from having to update a review or log onto the App Store just to tell you guys that I have an issue. I should have access to see how many rewards points may be used in case I want to upgrade. Options to earn extra points should be available when checking in via the app instead of just when checking in at the airport. My known traveler information should be stored so I don't have to enter it every time I am booking a flight.

I rarely change a rating on a review, but in this case, I think this will help those of you who use this APP as much as I do. After writing my review, I decided I would check the United APP to see if it worked on my watch. It didn’t! That’s when I figured it was a iOS problem and not an APP problem. I am an Executive Platinum with American and use the APP at least five times a week. It worked fine on my iPhone 6S but wouldn’t load on my Apple Watch. After re-pairing the phone and watch, uninstalling and reinstalling the APP, restoring the iPhone, and erasing the watch, the APP still wouldn't work. I made an appointment at the genius bar where they wiped the phone and set it up as a NEW phone. That is a pain. However, because I backed up my iPhones for years, my newest phone had bugs that prevented the APP from working on the Apple Watch. So setting up the phone, as much of a pain as it is, fixed the problem. Therefore, the APP wasn’t the problem. I was an iOS problem. So I'm changing my rating from a 1 star to a 4 stars. All and all, if you fly with American, this is a solid APP and as long as your devices are bug free, the APP should serve you well.

This is my first review I have ever wrote for any app on here. But seeing all the bad reviews on here I felt like I had to add my two cents. I haven't had a chance to fully use the app yet because I don't fly out for two days, but I have enrolled and added my flights to the app. So far everything is working and when I check in my boarding passes should show with no problem. Everyone that is complaining about how they missed their flight or the boarding pass won't show on their phone shouldn't be blaming just the airline or their app 100%. I understand that the app could have problems or mess up, but you should of prepared yourself if something like that happened. I always print out my boarding pass and have that with me just in case something happens to my phone or the app I need. I also get that the whole point is to save from printing one out and all that. I would never fully trust my phone or the apps I'm using because anything can happen especially when you need it the most.

My husband and I went online to check in for our flight last night. This morning we arrived at the airport with plenty of time to board our flight. His digital boarding pass worked fine but mine showed an error telling me to see an American Airlines rep. They told me to use the kiosk and print a copy. The kiosk also gave me an error. They then directed me to wait in line for a real person. By the time I made it through the line my flight boarded. Her response was "It isn't working because you missed your flight." Which wasn't true. My husbands was working fine the flight wasn't scheduled to leave for another 15 minutes. Their solution was to charge us each $75 to catch the next flight or wait on standby all day. I called customer service who told me it was all my fault regardless of the fact that we did everything we were supposed to do and their app wasn't loading one of the two boarding passes.

Calling this app challenging is an exercise in self discipline. I know the merger is soon complete and I'm sure a new and improved app will be revealed, but in the mean time. You're killing us with this thing. Seriously, it's shaving days from people's lives with every use.
There's simply no excuse for how horrible the Front end is and even less excuse for things like providing the wrong terminal for gates, e.g., at SFO, gate 45 is easier to get to from terminal 1 rather than terminal 2 as the app says because that way you don't have to walk a mile back to terminal 1 through a long hallway. That connects the two.
Also, why is it that US Airways simply sent emails that allowed adding to iOS passbook when checking in through the site/web app, but AA requires that I install this steaming pile of app when I punish myself by flying AA. Why would you want people to see the mess that is this app? You should be hiding it as much as possible.

I never write reviews. This is the first time I hated an app so badly that I actually broke down to write a stupid review. I have not been able to use the app since the USAir merger and my FF accounts were merged months ago. I called support then and again tonight. Both times the excuse was "our system is having trouble" and I should try again later. I pushed them further and they said that merged accounts were having issues and when they are fixed they will send an email. So now I am left wondering which is it? Coupled with my usual American Airlines flying experience I hear them loud and clear: corporate cares so little they don't bother to train or even higher competent staff to work the desk. They just give them a little book of excuses to shake us off their leg like the dogs the flight attendants treat us like when we are unfortunate enough to be flying on one of their low-rent second-hand buckets. I am surprised the app doesn't cost $.99 for this level of polish, with an in-app purchase of $34 to login and a $15 check-in fee.

I am a Platinum travel, but frankly even a casual traveler ought to have a better travel experience with this app. Glad it shows my mileage, upcoming flights and number of upgrades I have, but beyond that it is pretty useless. Lipstick on a pig.
Trying to book a flight is tough. Can't 24 hold a flight like in the website, cant book multi-city flights, can't pay with gift card, award certificate, or flight credit. I was looking through other airline apps and noticed that even United offers a view of standby and upgrade lists. Gee, that would really be helpful.
If you are striving to be a great airline then start utilizing this technology that could really help that connection with your customers. I had to call the customer reservations line the other day and it gave me a two hour wait. If I had been able to get on the app and do it myself then maybe I could have avoided the headache. Please, wow us with the next upgrade!

As an Executive Platinum, I am aware of the overall travel experience. Recently, I had a chance to have this App make an rough day into a complete disaster.
I received numerous In-App notifications that informed me my flight had been delayed. First by 30 minutes, then by an hour, with the final notification indicating a 2 1/2 hour delay. I contacted AAdvantage Executive Platinum Customer Service. The representative indicated that she saw the delay as well and offered to reroute me, at no charge. I thought this was helpful and headed to the airport a bit later than usual for this flight, as it had been delayed (via In-App notification) and it had been confirmed by an AA Representative. When I arrived at the airport, I was informed there was no delay, none, nada. Where did I get that misinformation the AA Representative asked? I explained the In-App notifications...and was asked to show the notifications. I discovered that this App does not store "Past Notifications", like almost all of my other Apps do. For this reason alone, I would not recommend this App, unless you enjoy total confusion, mayhem and general discomfort for your flying experience.

Well, I can no longer log into the App either with the new version. I am getting that this version is no longer supported but this is the latest version. I must agree that AA is way behind the times with regards to both the Website AND App. I tried to make a reservation with miles on the App and the discounted one disappeared during the reservation process. I called the mobile support site (as well as leaving site feedback and emails to customer support). The person on the mobile support's response was "Wow, I didn't know you could make reservations with miles on-line and I have been here 13 years!" So much for mobile support. And no responses to any of my other support requests. Now I remember why I haven't flown AA in so long - such a nightmare! Flight entertainment not updated timely, supposedly I can choose my meal (I had banked enough miles to fly business) but that doesn't work either. Very bad front end AND Customer Service! They definitely should be looking at what other airline sites/APPs are doing! Sorry AA...

This isn't even an app. It's a less-functional, non-mobile-optimized version of ther web site. This pile of garbage is hands down the most pathetic user experience of anything I've come across this side of 2000. Not only is it completely void of any thought, it is almost as if it's been designed to frustrate a user so much that they DON'T book a flight with you. It's actually a more seamless experience to use the website on your phone because it at least gives you the option of zooming out to make sure you didn't miss anything. And it's not like they're venturing into uncharted territory here. United, their long-time competitor, has a perfectly fine app. One that actually operates within the confines of a phone screen. I have spent the last five minutes racking my brain thinking of any conceivable reason why it could possibly be so bad. The only thing I can think of is that some high-level AA exec has a mentally challenged nephew out there that fancies himself to be some kind of computer whiz and he let them design the mobile experience because he felt bad for the kid. Or maybe he lost a bet to someone at United and this was the punishment. Seriously - I implore you to check it out. You'll be floored. FLOORED. I'm glad I sold the AA stock I had. If this is any sign of what's going on over there I wouldn't be surprised if they went bankrupt for real this time.

Just booked sky miles flight on delta app in few min. Too bad for American, ill just fly another airline that's easier to book. Waste of time this app is, which I came to use because the website is terrible to use also, was hoping for a better solution. American app developers obviously don't read these reviews since the app has been updated and still has 1.5 stars. Your pr team is terrible for not catching this problem. Trust me your loosing business over website and app usability. Any marketing company can tell you how short people's attention spans are.....With all the choices in airlines you should make it as easy as possible to navigate flight searches, and search by miles/ or currency. Btw your website is horrendous too, that's an entire different problem. As a frequent flyer I would say take lessons from your competitors how to design a website and app. With over 300k miles I fly quite a bit on usair and American. I have since dropped my usair credit cards for the competition because they do it all better. Here I am wasting my time to tell you something that will go unnoticed. Unfortunately, I want to spend these miles and have to deal with your crappy website because the app won't even work....ugh

I have never left a review for any app that I've ever purchased and I've owned every version of iPhone since the iPhone 3. That alone should be significant in symbolizing how negative my experience has been with this app.
I am an Executive Platinum member of US airways and the experience merging with American has been dreadful overall. This app represents all that is awful and discouraging about this process. I use at least a dozen other travel apps and this is by far the worst. If their intention was to re-direct everyone to their mobile site instead of using the app, then this app is wildly successful. However, as an application to help travel or organize travel documents, it is utterly useless.
If it were published on April 1, I would have applauded their April Fools joke for pushing out such a horrendous product. Alas, it's not a beta version nor a joke. This is the type of experience that completely changes eight years of brand loyalty.

I don't usually fly American, but I have 6 flights with them over the next 2 weeks so I'm a first time user of their app. Awful. It's the only word to describe it. I spent 15 minutes attempting to check in for my flight via the app but it would not take me to the check in screen, it just keep "loading". I finally checked in via the website and had my boarding pass sent to me via email. It's disappointing as I fly other airlines 2-3 times a month and never have any issues. I can't see any of my saved flights when I log in either, so each time I want to check flight info, I have to fine my record locator in order to manually search for my flight. It's like my flights aren't tied to my Advantage number. You can buy all the new planes you want, but seriously, spend some money and fix your app (try looking at Alaska Airlines app; easy to use, looks great and super functional).

As it is, it is a great app! I did a huge trip today from Beijing to Cancun all on American Airlines and the one thing that kept on ticking me off, was that this app had no flight duration.
What I would truly love to see, is a way to click the app to say you've boarded, then have an eta or a count down on the app. I know this is offered in flight on the seat TV, but honestly, waiting for it to scroll through all the Chinese first, then all the screens in English till finally it's there but before I get half way down the page it scrolls to the next page.
There are a few other features I'd like to see, but need to think about them more before commenting. I do like this app and plan on using it every time I travel with American Airlines!

Decent but would like to see improvements

Version 3.5.0
The app works fine, but there are definitely features I would love to see on future updates.
1. Flight status push updates to your phone as opposed to getting flight status through text, email, or voice message.
2. Flight statuses that give you an idea of what the delay is due to, i.e. Weather, maintenance, awaiting inbound aircraft, awaiting crew, etc.
3. In addition to the upgrade list, I'd like to be able to see the standby list and seat assignments in the app.
4. A seat map that shows the current unassigned seats.
5. When viewing a flight status, It would be nice to see the type of aircraft that I will be flying on. Maybe take the picture and plane info right out of the back of the American Way magazine and include amenities that will be offered on the flight such as dinner, wifi, etc.
6. When searching a flight status by route, I'd like to see the results arranged in chronological order by time instead of seeing random times as I scroll down. For example when I search DFW-LAX and move the slider to 12 pm, I am presented with results in this order: 11:30, 11:00, 12:30, 1:30, 2:00, 8:55 am, 8:15 am.
I think these minor improvements would give the app 5 star qualities.

Version 3.0.3
I like the AA level's view-where you are and how much farther you have to go. However, it's flawed – badly. It changes the percentages and totals for the remaining levels as you click through. It has you questioning if it is ever right. Either display them accurately in one view (ideal) or make the user click to view each, but don't show the figures for those not selected (unless they are right to begin with-then no need to click to view individually anyway).
BOOKING FLIGHTS: no multi-city option in the app; each time users attempt to re-search for a new flight pattern in the available one-way or round-trip options, after clicking the app's back-arrow the airports are retained, but NOT the dates. Honestly-was this app tested AT ALL? These issues are so basic and so obvious that any sort of QA testing would have seen these. They must not care or not do it. Pls don't make end-users testers w/out consent in a known-beta/testing situation (which still wouldn't have these issues in it anyway-too obvious to pass through basic research!!)

Version 2.5.1
I fly AA twice a week every week and check-in with this app every time. American has its problems. Its fleet is old, and its major commuter routes are overloaded to name a few. This app, however, is fine. As I read the complaints on this page, all I can see are people who seem intent on not managing their life in person anymore. The app didn't perform right by making sure you have enough upgrades--something you should know yourself? Really? How lazy can people get? This is an app-not a substitute for your responsibility. Check your reservations; check your flight status; check-in and use the electronic boarding pass. If you have a bigger issue, use your common sense and contact a live person at AA. If the app was working and now it doesn't, use your common sense and re-download it. No app is stupid proof. 90% of the time when I read reviews of apps, that's the only useful thought I'm left with.

DO NOT USE THE PARKING REMINDER

Version 2.5.0
See title. They get tied to your flight itinerary and when that gets cleared from the app (and their system), so does your parking reminder. So if you get in after midnight or maybe have a seperate itenerary for your departing and returning flights, you're out of luck.
Also, anything beyond the basic expected usage (checking the status of your flight or displaying your ticket) will essentially load in an in-app browser on their terrible mobile site.
Before I discovered the parking reminder problem the app was at best 3 stars for covering the bare essentials. But the parking reminder issue just puts such a fine point on how little forethought and effort was put into this app. Don't trust it, don't rely on it, you're better off just pretending it doesn't exist as it'll fail you when you need to do something outside the "perfect travel experience workflow".
I'll let it keep an extra star for using the not-often-enough used passbook for your ticket and even for your AA card (as often as you've ever needed to use that).
EDIT: took that last star back because actually your itinerary disappears shortly after the last flight's departure (taking your parking reminder with it as mentioned earlier). Useless feature and just absolutely terrible design.
Wrote this sitting on my hour (and counting) delayed flight where the itinerary for the flight doesn't even come up on "My Flights" anymore so I can't quickly check the delay status.

Version 2.3.2
So far the app is not so great. It doesn't match the information capability that the United app gives. For example, I have to provide an email or phone number for text so that I can receive flight notifications. On the United app, notifications are received via the app. Another example, this app does not provide the information of flight # and where the aircraft is coming from prior to your departure. United's app provides this information including why it's delayed, if it is delayed. This information answers so many questions that do not need to be answered by the busy gate agents. Also, the United app provides notification via app when the flight has pushed/taxiing, has departed, has landed, and has arrived at gate. All great information that this AA app does not provide. Come on American, your challenge is to be and do better than the others. Can you do it?

Version 2.3.1
I've flown over a million and a half miles on American. I've accrued a lot of Frequent flyer miles. So for better or worse I'm stuck with American Airlines. If that were not the case I would boycott American over this app alone. It is so poorly designed. It really needs to be redesigned from the ground up. I shouldn't have to google the name of an airport separately, I should be able to search for it within the app. If the airport's name does not include the name of the city you are trying to fly to, good luck. You just have to search through a long list of airports. How about entering a city you are traveling to and the app figures out the closest city (and airport) American flys to? It's not rocket science. Booking a flight with miles is another headache. Currently the AAdvantage button leads you to a blank screen. Even when it worked it was anything but convenient. It should have a button to book a flight with miles on the same screen as you would normally book a flight. Why complicate it? Maybe we are all spoiled with the simplicity of our smart phones, but the iPhone has been out 5 years. We expect better app design.

Mediocre at best

Version 2.2.0
The app isn't as bad as some previous reviews... I fly AA weekly, and also frequently travel Delta. The AA app is a bit clunky, and I can not view seat maps to change seats. The passbook integration is very nice, and information is current within minutes after making changes online, at the gate, or through my travel agency. Contact tabs are dynamic, loading #'s for your AAdvantage tier's desk. Push notifications for gate changes, delays, and flight status are also very helpful (if not a bit too frequent!)
They could learn a lot from the Delta app, though, which has better flow, cached itineraries (this thing is constantly reloading all my itineraries), and functioning seat maps.
Overall, a decent and useful app - with room to grow. Lets hope AA puts strategic momentum behind it as they struggle to redefine their brand image

Version 2.1.0
Wow. Hard to believe AA would let this horrible app represent them. It is functionally weak and doing anything useful, like booking a flight, becomes an exercise in frustration and futility. Aesthetically it is a hodgepodge of "new" stuff and old stuff that just doesnt work well together - or work at all for that matter. It's 2012 and this app forces you to enter obscure airport codes in upper case without providing an easy to use search facility? Really? (Note to the developers, every major programming language has an uppercase function. How about using it?) No easy way to search for airports. No popup calendars for picking dates. When they send you to a web based portion within the app the text is misaligned and unreadable. You lose your data when scrolling through the popup of every airport in the world when you are picking an airport. The list of things wrong with this app could go on for quite awhile. Seems to me someone is trying to slap some modern technology onto an older backend system and frankly, it is a failure. It begs the question if anyone at AA actually used this app before they approved it. AA take a gander at Kayak or Hipmunk... maybe there you could learn a few things about how to provide a useful app.

Version 2.1.0
This app did not save me time. Instead it COST me a lot of time. I spent over an hour setting this up for first use. It is not intuitively designed at all. There are too many screens and sections to get lost in. After registering with AAdvantage and having to locate my AA conf. # ( not easy if you've purchased through Travelocity, orbitz, or Expedia) and copying and pasting that into a "reservation," the app did not save any of my flight info and I kept having to do that all over again! Then it would not let us check in or get boarding passes because it said we had no seat numbers even though both Travelocity and AA at the airport counter agreed we did have the assigned seat numbers we requested. In the end we were issued a printed boarding pass without being asked about Passbook even though we had our iPhones out at the airport, so anything digital would have been additional and redundant anyway! The app so far is totally useless. This is very disappointing because we were very excited about its potential for convenience and time efficiency. Please issue a significant update/redesign!

Version 2.0.0
Not sure what combination of iOS and device hardware folks have been using but on my iPad (3rd Gen) and iPhone 4S and iPhone 5 OS iOS 6 (latest) I haven't run into any deployment issues. Long reservation names seem to get truncated but otherwise all functionality is there. I can change seats and the web interface used is kept in-App which is annoying because its not at all a pleasant interaction but it does work. I haven't had any issues logging in and my account pulls right up and is accurate. I'm not sure in a fan of the "cleaner" look with the fonts because I enjoyed the branded backdrops - I feel like Its easy to forget I'm using the AA app compared to any other reservation management interface. Gate times and changes are much more accurate and update much more quickly and the integration with Passbook has been both seamless and flawless for me so far. I've completed 6 trips so far with the new version and haven't had any issues other than the long reservation name truncation. I'd give the app a higher rating when the interface is 100% iOS and seat mapping and seat change functions are not handed off to the browser interface.

Version 1.6.0
Deserves negative star review. My unaccompanied minor used app to check in & get boarding pass at O'Hare this afternoon. Worked fine - Until she was near front of a very long security line & returned to app to display boarding pass for TSA - at which time the app would not display the e-boarding pass. She had coverage to txt & make calls but repeated attempts to obtain boarding pass on app did not work. She left line asked for help from a ticket agent who then laughed at her saying she'd never make the flight which was scheduled to depart in 15 minutes. No effort to assist her - there was plenty of time if agent had cared enough to print the boarding pass & walk the 10 feet to security to assist my daughter in getting to front of the security line. App should open with a 72 pt disclaimer advising that it works only when it feels like it so rely at your own risk. Reservation assistance was poorest customer service I've ever experienced So Instead of using miles, I paid for a ticket on united. That gets in late but at least before 1 am. Rage doesn't quite state my mood strongly enough right now. AA's app & attitude toward its customers is unforgivable.

Bad App - v1.5 A Little Better

Version 1.5.0
Still a BAD App
Even with the upgrade, this is a bad app. I fly 180K miles a year and I need to be able to rely on my technology.
The latest version is still seriously flawed; navigation is not intuitive and selections and buttons are too close together. For example the 'Change Seat' link is right above the 'Cancel Itinerary' button.
Realize these guys are in bankruptcy proceedings, but this is a customer facing app. Could you guys hire some experienced adults that know how to write iPhone apps. The hacks you have designed an app that is better suited for CICS or TPF.
This a DANGEROUS app.
I have lost seat assignments, upgrade requests, check-in status and boarding passes. I've had reservations recs scrambled so bad that it has taken a lot of check-in help to untangle.
It feels like it was written by a couple of high school kids.
It constantly prompts for login and password credentials. When you press Go or Submit there is no indication that anything is going on or if the app is waiting a response.
Well behaved apps will display a rotating wheel, not this app. You are left to guess whether you actually pressed the button; press it again just to be sure, and if another screen was being displayed, the touch may be mistaken for a selection in that display.
Navigation is illogical. Sometimes you swipe forwards to dig deeper, sometimes you have to swipe backwards.
Response time is awful.
DO NOT TRUST THIS APP

Version 1.4.0
I ran the app again today. Found that the iPad version doesn't load the airports for flight info or schedules. Oddly the AA rep told me that they didn't think the app was compatible with the iPad. Only the I phone. Lol. Well at least the reps are still not trained or informed. The mobile app issue number is wrong. Guys how hard is it really to put out a viable app that works. Does any one really care either way. Now I have spent 35 minutes on the phone holding for the rep to find my information.
Also. The automated line is ridiculous. If a customer takes the time to dial the number that really means they want to speak to a person. Even if it just says please hold and you get the call back prompt. All the other thing are really a waste.

Used to work - sort of.

Version 1.3.3
For me, the best part of this app was the ability to check-in and have my boarding pass right there on my phone. Unfortunately this did not work at all airports. Now it has stopped working even for airports that it used to work? That is to say previously I could check in for flights departing DFW and JFK but not PIT or LGA. Now I cannot even check in for my flights leaving DFW - AA headquarters. When I contacted AA, they said to call tech support to have them walk me through how to check in using the app. Obviously they do not understand the concept of clicking on a single button labeled CHECK IN and getting an error message that says you must complete the check in process online via their web site. That is not something tech support can resolve. The developers must fix the bugs in their app. (Speaking as a software developer of 30 years experience.) Until AA actually makes this app functional (read useful for something more than info) I give it a big thumbs down.

App was great until recently...

Version 1.1.0
The app ran great until recently. In the past I have had great success with researching flights, changing seats, checking in, and pulling up a boarding pass all native within the application. It seems recently the app is significantly more unstable with locks occurring mostly on application initiation and it freezes on the home screen. It's become the norm rather than the exception that the says I must go online to check in. Then I come back for boarding pass and it again sends me to the web.
Unless I'm not seeing it, there is one piece of AAdvantage miles tracking that is missing. I can see totals, counts towards the next level, etc. But I don't see where I review history of mikes earned to confirm that all my flights have been properly credited.
Note: I use a screenshot of my boarding pass as a workaround for the unreliability of the app working while in line. I click to my boarding pass and if it works rather than telling me to go online, I take a screenshot (home button and on/off key on top right of device at the same time) and then I have an easily accessible image in my list of photos. it's not a solution to the unreliability, it's a workaround until the app is improved.

This is a streamlined interface to commonly-used aspects of the web site. It's much easier to use on a iPod or iPhone then the mobile or full web site. It keeps you logged in so you don't have to keep re-entering your password, at least for most features. Some things, such as "manage my flight", drop into the mobile web site (but in an embedded window) and then you do have to retype your password. Luckily, when done you're back where you were.
Flight info is shown in a clean, easy to read format.
What's missing: caching of flight data, which would let you see info when you don't have Internet access (especially needed on iPods); more flight info, such as flight time, which cabin you're in, etc. Also, telling you where the nearest Admiral's Club is would be great.

If you're checking with no curb-side drop off for baggage, this is a waste of time.

Firstly, if you're checking-in with baggage, and there is no curb-side drop off for your bags, don't waste your time using this app or trying to explain it to the AA staff checking in bags (well, at least at AA's incompetent check-in at SFO - Chicago's O'Hare's AA check-in is A+)...So here is my experience. I downloaded the app, clicked my check-in and it told me to to go curb-side or the check-in kiosk if I had a bag to check-in....so, since I had a bag to check-in and the line for the curb-side check-in was a mile long at SFO, I decided to to go inside and use the only other alternative you have - the check-in kiosk...which will then check you in with a printed boarding pass - so my question therefore is "what's the point of this app, if you're still get a paper check-in at the kiosk and you have to go through the entire check-in at the kiosk" ? I brought this up with one of the AA personal who was clueless about the app....I can see it's value if you do not have check-in baggage. Since I always have check-in baggage this app is worthless in my opinion...perhaps I missed something, but then again, I think not.

I would like to see a couple improvements:
1. After I log in, it should NOT be necessary to enter my record locator number to see my reservation. This app needs to work more like the AA Web site and display ALL my reservations and allow me to select the one I want to review. Personally, I don't memorize my record locator number and shouldn't have to.
2. I want to be able to easily add my reservation to my Outlook calendar and iPhone calendar. I've also found this to be a problem on the AA Web site. I have yet to be successful in adding a reservation to Outlook using the calendar feature on each reservation. All I get is an e-mail full of codes and jibberish that does me no good whatsoever. I end up having to add my reservation manually to Outlook and then syncing my iPhone. Other apps allow me to add appointments easily and flawlessly to Outlook and/or the iPhone calendar, why not the AA app?

Almost there

Finally! Looks great and has a great UI. My only issue is the flight sync. I can't get my latest flight changes to update. I cancelled one trip and added another trip several hours ago. The new trip has even been ticketed. The app says, "Updted less than two minutes ago," but neither of the changes show up on the iPhone even though they do show on the AA web site. Also, I see no way to force a manual sync. Maybe the automatic sync is so often that manual isn't necessary. If that is the case, then let's get the slight sync to actually work.
This is the start of a great app, but it appears to NOT be optimized for the long-timers and the road warriors - you know, the people who actually need it/will use it the most.
