Description

PlaceTrack is a modern, powerful, full-featured location journaling and sharing app for iPhone. It keeps a history of your locations with speed, course, altitude, and user activity data, lets you track your loved ones, check the speed they are travelling, get directions to their current location or view a street level picture of any place they are or they have been. You can also overlay and compare your contacts location against a GPX track: import from files, Strava or Apple Watch workout routes (the app integrates with HealthKit)

Main features include:

- safe location sharing with the people you trust, in real time

- live data: force a contact’s device to immediately send a fresh location

- passive and battery friendly: run in the background with no noticeable impact on battery life, location is periodically updated as the device moves

- context data: location data can include location history, speed and course, altitude, whether you’re walking, running, moving in a vehicle or resting

- you are in control: set who sees your current location or who has access to your location history with fine-grained access controls

Other features:

- excellent battery usage: PlaceTrack uses SLC mode (Significant Location Change) and region monitoring, NOT continuous background. PlaceTrack is suspended in the background most of the time and is woken up only when you move significantly (detected using cell towers signal); most of the time it just sleeps and the GPS hardware is powered off to preserve battery. Install the app and forget about it

- save your location history for later viewing

- optionally share your recent location or location history with authorized PlaceTrack contacts

- forced contact location updates: you can ask for a live location update from a contact and the backend platform will silently ask your contact device for a new location update

- delayed sync: stores your locations when network is unreachable and pushes them to the PlaceTrack servers when you're back online

- in-app streetview images

- track overlays: import route data from Apple Watch, Strava and GPX files

- location sharing works using address book phone numbers: your phone number is authenticated through an sms code on your first activation

- your data, including your phone number and location, is always sent on a secure connection (ssl) and is never shared with any third party

Never sends code to verify phone number and locks account if you request

I’ve been using this to track family on Android and IOS for several years with no problem.

When I got a new phone I needed to verify the phone number again. But the code never comes through. Requested it again 30 minutes later and nothing. Deleted app and reinstalled and requested and it locked my account.

Very frustrating. Can’t see a way to get service.

AutoCheck-In Setup Failed

The app failed when I tried to set up auto check-in. It repetitively pops up a message saying “AutoCheck-In Setup Failed - The operation couldn’t be completed. (kCLErrorDomain error 5.)” Please help fix this.

Background checkins not functional

I acquired this app to do automatic check ins on Foursquare. I've been using it up until iOS 7, where it stopped functioning. The current release does not seem to automatically check me into my Foursquare places.

When I try to connect with application support, I am redirected to the app download page. :/

Now that latitude is officially dead are u Nico going to update to work with the google+ location to have the app work or now it's just going to be only for Facebook and foursquare. Looking forward to an update. Otherwise still best app for auto checkin and battery savings

Latitude check in while using little power

I have has this app installed on my phone for more than a year and like that I don't need to worry about it working. Just set it up and leave it. It will take care of the rest without eating up all of your battery.

No Google Latitude Friends

I have had lots of trouble with the Google Latitude App so I purchased this one thinking I could use it instead. However It does not show your friends but will simply update your location on Latitude.

Auto checkin!

I like how it keeps my latitude and foursquare status up to date in the background while using very little extra battery power. Wish it would only display the GPS status icon when it was actually using GPS, tho.

Great way to update Latitude w/o killing your battery

I use this app to maintain my Latitude history. Since it allows you to set the update intervals, you get a good approximation of where you've been without killing your battery.

The auto-checkin features are nice, but I don't use them.

Does not auto checkin to Facebook

This would be an absolutely excellent app but the whole reason I got it was for its ability to auto checkin to Facebook. I have tried absolutely everything and it will not work. If you want it for four square then that works perfectly! Can't wait till this is fixed.

Best so far

This app is much better then the official google client so far. If I look at my track on the history page of latitude and it is much more accurate on days using this app then the other client. With the other client there are points several miles away from anywhere I traveled.

Improvements that would help this app:

- send location when power status changes. That way it would send when getting in and out of car.

- enable different set of options when plugged in.

I bet this is an iPhone limitation with SLC events.

Absolutely the Best!

If you are even debating buying this then just buy it. Hands down the best location app for multiple reasons:

1) This app takes battery life seriously unlike every other location app out there including Google's own Latitude app. I do not even notice a dip in my battery life with this running in the background.

2) Accuracy is not sacrificed. Somehow the location accuracy is perfect even though I use the default GPS timeout which to me is the most important part of the app and something no one else has.

3) Offline support! Personally, I like having every point saved and with this app you get that! Even if you have no data it will monitor your GPS changes and push them online once you have a data connection.

Lastly, the developer is quick to fix bugs and adds features all the time!

Better then google app but no 2 step login

Battery life much better then google latitude app. More options. Seems more accurate.

Update: still like this better then google's app but it will not login if you enable 2-step verification on google. The application specific passwords do not work. Would be 4 stars if they fix that.

I feel sorry for this developer, Google made this app totally unnecessary

I'm glad this developer did this app because it provided a service when Google would not. Unfortunately for him, Google has now added a free Latitude app rendering this one obsolete. I don't see anything in this app that makes it better than the free one from Google and I've used both.

Almost perfect

Icons were hard to press but new update fixed this! I only wanted it for the background updating anyway which is flawless!

Previous bad reviews are due to a bug that was fixed in iOS 4.2, not the developers fault!

I really like this app. it's perfect for road trips. its ui and icons could use tweaking but otherwise works as advertised. ability to fine-tune update frequency is super nice.

for those complaining about background update not working there was an iOS bug in 4.1 which is fixed in 4.2

What a piece of dog feces. This app is a ripoff because my friend's location still shows the old location of our apartment we lived in three months ago. Whenever I check on his location while he's on the other side of town, it still shows the old location. Fu*k you placetrack!!!

Flawless on iOS v4.0

This works great if you are running iOS v4.0. Yes it cashes on v4.1, but the Developer has notified Apple of the crashing issues and it should be fixed when v4.2 comes out. Once this is fixed you'll love this app. If you're not on v4.1 yet, I'd buy it, but if you are, you should wait for an update to resolve the crashes.

Does not do anything in the background in iOS 4.1 I have to launch the app manually to see my updates. Update to software was released today and does not fix anything. Warning: Don't waste your money. Developer also has not responded to me.

Not working as expected

Bought this to update my location so my wife could see where I am during commute via running, biking, or car. I have the latest iOS. Crashes constantly and does not update location as expected in the background unless I manually bring the app to the front. Very disappointed. Allow the google app to get through Apple!!!!!!!!

Works ok for a while, but regularly stops updating about halfway through my daily commute (I don't have data dead spots... I can stream audio the whole trip...). I am running iOS 4.1, so maybe an app update will fix things.
