Just hold your device up to a melody instrument such as the tin-whistle, flute, concertina, uilleann pipes, accordion or banjo, hit record and the melody will be extracted and submitted to the tunepal.org search engine for matching.

Great, but...

This is a great app, but a lot of times it returns tunes that are obviously not right, or even in the same time signature. I wish there was a way to narrow search results on the "record" page, like a little button for time signature or tune type or key, and it would only return results in those parameters.

The app works really, really well. Used it at a few sessions and it was spot on! I just wish I could email/print the sheet music.

What a pal !

Smart app, intuitive design. Wants to crash on uploading if "glass of beer" but other 200 or so tunes I found and uploaded without a hitch! Would like it if there was an alphabetical option to organize the order of the tunes but other than that it is perfect! Best $6 I ever spent! Thanks to the team who put this together for the love of the tunes!! Best, Jack

100% inaccuracy

I have tried playing dozens of traditional irish tunes on my penny whistle, and have yet it have it successfully identify a tune. I try playing with no ornamentations, and with a robotic tempo, and still no success. I've tried humming and whistling too, with still no success. Not sure how others are getting good results. I'm using an iPhone 4S with iOS 7.

Why no Family Sharing?

Great app, use it often, but why no family sharing? I have to buy it for each of my Irish musician kids. Five stars minus the two extra times I have to pay for it.

Recognizes Thousands of Irish Tunes

I've used TunePal in various forms for several years; started with it back when it was running on "Palm" and "PocketPC" devices. I've never had a problem with it on my iPhone or iPad and it is currently installed on my iPhone 5s running iOS 7.1.1.
I see it used often at Irish music sessions when an unfamiliar tune is played by someone present. It almost always identifies the tune in question and the sheet music reference it provides allows confirmation.
Well worth the money in my opinion.

Not ready for iOS7

The Tunepal app is not working on either my iPhone 4S or iPhone 5S under iOS7. An error message pops up on the record option each time it is activated saying "Tunepal couldn't hear enough notes." Reboots and resets will not clear this error. The App is not able to access microphone!
Other issue is that developer only communicates through Facebook, so purchasers who do not use Facebook can not get support!
This app used to be great, but as Apple users transition to iOS7, this app becomes useless and this is a terrible shame!

Thanks

This app has been a tremendous help in expanding my repertoire of tunes. And... If you have a wireless printer you can make hard copies if the music.
Wants?
Some ambiguity in tune titles as is common in Irish Trad.
And just music .. No Tabs.
Maybe a fix in future versions?
Extra 1/2 star for the rating...

Good but...

Great app! However, room for improvement. PLEASE add more sophisticated library functionality for tunes. Like the ability to create "playlists". Also, I want to tag tunes with genre or whatever other whim. Or be able to sort and group ad hocly by any parameter (style, key, jig/reel/etc). Thanks!!!

Glitchy

Ive enjoyed this app for some time but it is now buggy. I play a tune into it and after " listening" it closes out. Or I look at sheetmusic in landscape mode and scroll down to find the bottom half missing. Restarting the phone doesnt help.

Best app ever!!

If you play Irish music, then this app is the best thing ever! Recognizes tunes, gives you sheet music, and can play the tunes back to you at whatever speed you want and with many different instruments. This app even let's you keep a list of tunes you know! Best $5 I ever spent!!

Awesome

Can't stop raving about this app. Though it's dear compared to the price of free apps, this app comes in extremely handy. Sometimes the search for titles returns poor results cut the recording and labelling feature is really incredible. It also let's you add tunes to your collection and search discography of anyone who's recorded the tunes. A must have app for Irish trad musicians.

My favorite iPhone app

Really works. Correctly identifies tune most of the time. Also provides a great way to keep track of tunes I'm learning. It even lets me email tunes to other people....although I wish I could mail the sheet music instead of only the text notation. A must for any session musician.

Great app!

The accuracy of identifying tunes poorly played is fairly amazing. I love being able to pull up sheet music and You Tube videos after identifying the tunes, as well as to be able to share through facebook.
It would be interesting to be able to put in what you already know about a tune ( example, Ed Reavy tune) to help in identification.
A great party game by the way.

Brilliant! But needs some further tweaking

I would give this app 5+ stars for its sheer brilliance. It is a great tool for the session musician and a bargain at twice the price.
But I knocked the total down to 4 stars for some bugs and annoyances:
- If you swipe across a tune name in My Tunes in order to delete it, the delete button appears on the tune *above* the one you swiped.
- For some tunes in the My Tunes list, the key and rhythm are not displayed, even though the abc code dilplays seemingly correct headers for these values.
- If the display is in landscape mode, the countdown digits don't appear when you start a recording.
- There does not appear to be any way to sort the My Tunes list. Tunes simply appear in reverse chronological order, based on when you added them. Ideally, one could sort by title, rhythm, and/or key. Drag-and-drop reordering would also be nice.
I'm running TunePal under iOS 4.2.1 on a 4g iPod Touch. For what ir's worth, I previously tried an earlier version of TunePal on a 2g iPod Touch with an external "Thumbtacks" microphone, and I got poor results with tune identification. With my current setup, tune identification is excellent.

Works great for me

I bought an Ipod touch, to do a little surfing, and to try out some apps. This is the first $ for money app I bought, and I LOVE it. I have had many revelations, as I know a lot of tunes that are "Gan Ainm" around here, and it's hard to get "sets" worked out and get my friends to play them, when they don't know the names, or what key I am in. I am lazy about figuring what key something is in because I play the fiddle, and all the notes are at my disposal all the time. Now I've started making note cards with my favorite sets, with the keys on them, and I can shuffle them like a deck incase someone wants to nag me for a set list. It feels really great when my ipod not only names a tune, but can play back to me, a tune that I wasn't sure was even real for years. It really feels like a "Pal" for a second.
I have the Gen 4 Ipod and only use a wi-fi here at the house in Alaska. Works fabulously.

What happen to Ipad compatability?

I was running tunepal on my iiphone and pad and found it to be a good app. Implemented on an ipad, It's particularly good for finding tunes and displaying them quickly. The app works reasonably well on the iphone at sessions - particularly for tunes where a flute or whistle is dominant.
I recently had to restore my ipad and was surprised to see a message that said that tunepal is no longer an ipad app. There is no way to load it on the ipad. What happened? This is a useful app but I'm confused about why it suddenly became an iphone only app.

Worthless

I've tried this app many times before deciding to give it a bad review. With almost all the tunes I tried it on it was incredibly inaccurate. The tune I was searching for almost never came up on the list of options. Plus the app itself only works about half of the time. Don't waste your money on this one.

Uncanny.

This is the first app I bought as soon as I got my iPhone. I'd been using the online version of TunePal, and am super-thrilled to have it on my phone now. If you've ever found yourself with an unidentified traditional Irish tune on your hands, this handy app could save you untold aggravation.
Does it work? Yes, and uncannily well. I've tested it on a few tunes and its accuracy so far has been 100%, for both well-known and more obscure tunes. You can play at any tempo, put in variations, even make a few mistakes. I don't know what's more impressive; that this app manages to extract the melody, or that it manages to find a match, even if the database version is quite different. Not only does it work for solo instruments (I tried it on flute), but I've also seen it work quite well in a noisy pub, with several musicians playing their own versions and variations at once.
I agree with caoimghgin's review: Killer. App.

Excellent.. But..

As a trad musician I feel that the session.org has many suspect settings.. And, I have yet to get a setting from the ceol rince na hEireann volumes. Which is a shame, since that and o'neills are as close as you can get to the source..

I Really Wanted to Like this App....

I tested this app against an hour's worth of traditional tunes recordings, with no background noise, from Bohola to Old Blind Dogs, Flook to Lunasa, The Chieftains to Cherish the Ladies, the Boys of the Lough to Capercaillie, Altan to Ossian, from Danu to Dordan to Donal Clancy and his kin... 84% of the time Tunepal guessed the tune was Johnny Cope, with 57% confidence..... When I played a rendition of Johnny Cope, by Planxty, Tunepal thought it was The Lonesome Boatman, with 52% confidence.....The only 100% confidence I have is that Tunepal has yet to get a tune correct.
It gets two stars because I remain ever hopeful.....

Amazing!

If you're a trad-head and just couldn't justify the expense of getting an iPhone, now you have your killer app. No more asking your session mates what the tune was. No more uncomfortable moments when he/she can't quite remember the name either. Just hit record and you've got the name, the notes, even where you heard it. Freakin magic.

Absolutely amazing

I am absolutely blown away by this app. Bought it, uploaded it to my iPad and starting picking out random (and not all common) tunes on my pennywhistle. TunePal identified every single one of them immediately. This is going to be extremely useful out in the world. Works both on the iPhone and iPad.

Great app for session players!

I decided to give the app a try, and I'm glad I did! It recognized most of the tunes I know quite well - for a few it didn't show the tune as the first choice, but it was always in the list of possible tunes. This will be a great tool to identify tunes that someone plays but doesn't know the name.

Tunepal

I am very impressed with this application. I experimented
with a bunch of tunes and tunepal correctly identified them most of the time.
I would like if it presented the top 5 ( configurable )
matches for cases where the first choice is not correct.
