Great features

What a great app! The loop feature combined with the ability to swipe makes it easy to go through and add to my knowledge of signs. I wish it had a feature where you could translate and type in words and have it put together with several signs so that I didn't have to hunt for them all. It would also be awesome to just have a search feature to type to go to one sign rather than having to scroll alphabetically. But besides my wishes for additional features this is the best ASL app I have tried and it's certainly worth the time of anyone trying to learn ASL.

Can I give it 6

This changed my life.
My son (now 8 1/2)
Has had bilateral hearing aids for 6 years.
This got us to find ways to communicate and when there was a concept that he could not get this really helped.
Now that he is a fully functionally kid we now use it to look up words that we can use to 'talk' so no one else can hear us

A fabulous tool!!!

This is the most useful app for learning signs. Won't substitute for actually learning ASL from a Deaf person as I am. Like any language you need to see how the signs go together in a sentence. But if I forget a sign or want to fill in a hole in my knowledge it's spot on according to my Deaf friend. BTW I capitalize Deaf because I've been taught it is a sign of respect for not just hearing loss but the entire culture that goes with it.

Useful

I enjoy the interface and how smooth it is. It's simple and effective. I would like, if possible, the addition of synonymous or glossing. To aid the translation and transliteration portion of looking up signs for accuracy. I know it must be overwhelming to keep everything possible that n perspective when developing apps, but that would be an awesome addition. Will recommend the app and hope+wait+patient for updates.

Decent app but...

As a professional interpreter, I try to keep several reference apps on my devices. Every other ASL or finger spelling app I utilize works on both my iPhone and iPad except for this one. Instead the developers want me to purchase the same app with the exact same vocabulary twice. Overall, this isn't my go-to app anyway since I typically default to NTID and only use this one for a comparative but now that they've changed it and I can only access it on my phone, I will be using it even less.

It's so amazing how helpful this app is, you just punch in what word you need help signing and it instantly shows you a video of how to sign it. It's all in the palm of your hand. If you want to or have to like we do it's an amazing tool/app to have! Just as a hint to mamas with babies who are teaching they have baby signing apps too and my son loves to watch the babies it's not the signing dictionary for babies it's called baby sign and baby sign and sing! Great app

I've been using this app for about a year, and it's definitely my favorite out of the different ones I've tried. It's easy to use and has a good variety of words, though I wish they'd add more. I'd be more than happy to pay for a deluxe version, since I've been so happy with this one.

Glitchy

I love this app but some words are glitchy. For example, when I look up "church", it gives me CIA (which is the next word) or the word "cheap" signs chauffeur (which is the word right before that). Then I just have to look up the word. Also, it's annoying that it only works with Internet. When I don't have service, I can't look up words. I'm still very thankful for this app, just hope they fix the glitches! I love Dima

Fantastic and Killer Tech Support Team

I've used this app daily for about a month and could not be happier with the ease of navigation and the simple commands available for each video. I've purchased another of the teams apps, "ASLT" which acts as a great resource for personal learning. Although, the "T" stands for translator, it should not be misused as a replacement for a real translator. The app uses the same images from this dictionary and splices them together for viewing based upon what you type. The Tech Support team is extremely prompt and had my problem with missing videos solved in an instant. Thank you.

Love this app

My 6 yo daughter is hard of hearing and, while it is not a substitute for classes, this app has helped us and my daughter's teachers (she also has Down syndrome and is in special education, but is the only child who is HOH in her school) learn new signs when the need arises. The dictionary is expansive and, so far, it is rare that the necessary word cannot be found. Worth the money!

Incredible resource

I've been using this app for a while to help me learn sign so I can communicate with my deaf girlfriend (who has also been a great teacher). I required additional support so in lieu of that I found this app and it is a very good resource for furthering my ASL knowledge. Even when I ask my girlfriend what a word is and she doesn't know it, she pulls out my phone and uses this app to look it up. I highly recommend this app to anyone really. Clear and confident.

This is the best video dictionary in the App Store. ASL is a living language and there are always differences regionally of how things are signed, but after showing this to many deaf friends from all over the USA, they all universally seemed pretty impressed with it. This has given me confidence to use new signs I have learned from the App in real life situations.
The list of words in the dictionary is a nice base vocabulary. I like the loop function to repeat signs, and I feel they are demonstrated clearly.
If they expanded it to include some common phrases and basic conversation, I think that would be amazing.

Handy Interpreter tool

I'm a certified educational interpreter for k-12, as well as a parent to a deaf child. I use this app for signs that aren't normally used in daily vocabulary. I've also used it to prepare for lessons during my planning period. I suggest to my Beginner sign class and Sign Language club to purchase this app. I like that the signs are ASL, love the idioms, and the categories. Doesn't have it all (4stars), but what it does have is a nice collection of signs.

I like this app, but ...

I like this app. Shows different uses for for the same word, shows many idioms, and common phrases, and putting a looping feature was great improvement. However, ever since the last update, that loop feature stopped working! Would appreciate it of anyone would tell me how to fix it! Thanks.
Thanks so much for fixing the loop feature! I really enjoy this app. I like how they have many different uses for a word. How about the word settle? Settle down and be quiet, settle in this area meaning lived there, the salt will settle to the bottom. This word is spelled the same, sounds the same, but has different meanings or concepts so there is a different sign for each concept. Example sentences would be cool for this app. Thanks so much for all the work you do. :)

Great guide for those just beginning ASL.

I don't use ASL on a regular basis, but this app comes in handy when I do need it. I work in a coffee shop and one of our regulars is deaf and mute, and can only speak in sign. He would normally just write down his order, but I found this app and it allowed me to communicate, albeit in a limited fashion. He was very impressed and also very touched that I took the time to learn some sign just to talk with. Great app, and very useful!

Excellent support for learning ASL

I have pursued learning ASL for two years using A Basic Course in ASL text book from Santa Fe School for the deaf & this app. I use this app often to see actual sign in motion when diagrams from the text book are not clear to me. This is an excellent app & I highly recommend it to anyone pursuing learning ASL.

Great app for reference

This app is great, my cousin is deaf and I know some sign language, but I got interested into knowing more than just common conversational words. This dictionary is great as a reference, but it does not help constructing sentences, to do that you have to pay another 5$. This seems a bit much, but I will always suggest this as a reference and I have been very happy with this app so far :)

Handy and Easy To Use

ASL 2 student here. Very easy to look up a word and with over 5000 signs, most of the words I have looked for have been there. Being an app, it's much handier than going to a web page with all the requisite pinching and zooming.
The only down side is that sometimes the sign is different than the one we learned in class. This isn't a unique problem to this app of course. ASL often has different signs depending on what region of the US you are.

Good response to break-fix request

After a recent upgrade, app crashed in my iPhone IOS 6. I emailed support not expecting much. They replied right away, gathered more information, and promised a fix. New upgrade was out in about a week and it fixed the crash issue as promised. I also got a follow-up email from tech support to let me know that the upgrade was available (I had already downloaded it, but appreciated the email nonetheless). Better response to a bug report than I've seen from a lot of apps. All seems to be working as expected now.

over exceeds all expectations

We are still new the sign language (and other spectrums) world. So, however much I paid for this app it was worth every penny.
It is perfect to have on my iPhone. I can pull it out at any impromptu/ practical/ real life moments and educate myself and family on a new word that we can use right then.
The "loop" feature is the best. It will repeat the sign over and over until you stop it. This is a great way for my child (and myself) to learn.
I've only had one problem and I emailed them and within minutes a real person (Josh) communicated with me and answered my questions. Then, when the bug was fixed he emailed me back letting me know of the fix and the new app update.
The "ASL Dictionary" app over exceeds all expectations that I ever had or have for an app.
Thank you.

Word database is correct and exhaustive!

Just wanted to correct the one reviewer who said the numbers are "wrong." They aren't. Numbers 1-10 are signed with the palm facing away from the body. 11-14 are signed with the palm toward the body.
I usually use comm-tech msu's online dictionary but the flash still won't play on iProducts so this app is an excellent pocket, easily accessible, version.
As a "hearie" I am slightly annoyed my music is stopped when I open the app but other than that I am satisfied with the purchase! Overall this is worth every penny. Two thumbs way, way up!

Some of the signs used aren't correct for ASL.

I just started taking ASL this semester, and was looking for something to supplement my learning outside of the classroom. I found this app and decided to try it out. As I was looking through it, I realized that some of the signs are incorrect for American Sign Language. For instance, in the numbers category, # 1-5 are signed with the hand facing outwards in the video. But in reality the hand signing is supposed to be facing towards the body.
Maybe in other forms of Sign Language the numbers are formed this way, but in that case the app shouldn't have been called 'ASL dictionary'. I think in theory the idea behind the app is brilliant, but the creators should have double-checked the signs used. And maybe have signs in different categories for the regions they are used?

Well Done!

Looks like the developers addressed the concerns stated by previous users. The navigation is user friendly. Totally meets my needs as a beginner!!!!

I think this app is very helpful! Being an ASL student, I forget words sometimes so it is helpful to pull up the app and find the answer quickly. Some of the words don't translate the exact same way my teacher would like us to sign them, however it is a great tool!

Well done

I really like this app. Almost daily I use it for translation or just plain curiosity. When im working on a song translation almost all of the signs are accurrate. My nephew is deaf and uses the same signs and if there is a different sign he was taught he tells me that the sign i am using is not wrong just different. I highly recomend this app but you should always use multiple references for accuracy.

This is a truly wonderful app!

Having this app is allowing me to refresh my memory on many of the signs I have already learned back when I was in high school and learn many more, providing me with the great opportunity to help my fellow co-workers to have another person to communicate with.
Thank you,
Chad

Great app!

Easy to use interface, clear video. New features for looping and slowing the video are welcome addition to an already solid app. I've been using this for about a year and a half now and have found it to be the best reference - not just on the iPhone

I've been waiting for this! Yay!

I had retired myself to huge memory-sucking sign language apps for the iPhone and iPad, and then this comes along and completely changes everything. I love it. I haven't used it very much yet, but I love what I have seen so far. And I LOVE that it takes up very little memory but offers so many words. I guess my only wish would be the ability to put in a sentence and have the signs all line up and show themselves to me. But, that may be asking too much, so I'll take what I can get and be happy.

Much improved

Definitely the best ASL app out there so far. The update is a huge improvement. Only drawback - a few signs are out of date or perhaps colloquial. I like an earlier suggestion to make it go bak to the point where you are in the dictionary, instead of back to the beginning. Intuitive search would be great, too. Overall, a great app. I love that you listen to feedback.

One very big complaint

The one BIG thing keeping this from being a great app, is that after viewing a sign & you page back, you are placed at the beginning of the alphabetical scroll, regardless of where you were viewing previously, making you scroll Back thru to where you were before, this is a HUGE inconvenience. And VERY frustrating, wasting time having to scroll all the way thru to find your place!...

Greatest ASL app out there๎Œท๎—

I want to be a deaf school teacher or interpreter and this app helps you learn so much so quickly and easily! My only thing is at the beginning the videos where supper short and I missed some of the sign but after using the app a little bit it helped a lot! I think this app is worth the money!๎•๎–

Good. Very helpful

Using as a check & review in my spare time... Also my kids like doing a word a day... I like the way the app works in general.
One thing gets on my nerves; which is that the search bar stays at the top of this list. After scrolling down looking for something i'm often looking up the next word that will follow in the sentance, but then I have to scroll all back to the top. I wish the search bar was stationary so it would be quicker to get from one word to the next.

Fantastic!!

What a great app. I am in the law enforcement field and have been looking for an app that can help when I have to communicate with the deaf. It has so much information and such a great investment. The only suggestion I could make, is allow replay of the video. I look forward to putting this to use. I highly recommend this app!!!

Great App

this is an excellent tool for on the go if you need to check on a sign. The other reviewer obviously forgot that signs are regional and what is typical for a sign in one region is not the same in all. Religious signs differ among religions so insisting a sign for Bible is Jesus Book is correct for many religions but there are others that use Holy Book instead, so dont think this app is wrong because signs differ from whatever region you are from. When in doubt, ask a Deaf person for what they use in a particular region. I have seen very different signs for many things due to this. I find the average ASL dictionary, including the one from Gaulledet will have signs that differ from what the Deaf use in my area. Would like to see an app that uses pictures for kids to learn sign that dont read yet, hint hint.....
I have a Deaf son so I this app is very useful for me when i forget a sign.

Fair app

It seems that this app was released too early. Lots of signs are incorrect. The videos flash by too quickly. Putting in at least video controls would be incredibly helpful so videos can be replayed.
It is apparent the people who made this app aren't deaf themselves. They should have researched ASL more closely before filming signs that people would notice would pick up on very quickly.
On a more positive note, this app is okay for beginners, it's also nice to see an app that has religious signs, however some were incorrect. Fortunately the app is only .99c not worth any more than that at this point.
This app needs major improvements on the video. Keep trying guys.
BTW, the sign for Bible is Jesus and Book. If reference is needed, I suggest checking out Gallaudet Dictionary of American Sign Language.

Great for adults and kids learning sign!

This application is so easy to use in compliment with Signing Time videos for kids. It helps me continue to teach her even after she has completed all the videos. As a word comes up I can reference and teach her. Love it!!!! Amazing ease with visual recordings.

excellent app but closes too quiclky

This is an excellent app. It has alot of words and the signs seem to be current. The only problem is that it closes too quickly after you are shown the correct sign. You have to stare at the screen, because if you blink, you'll miss the sign. If they could add speed control and not close so quickly after the sign is displayed, this would be beyond 5 stars!

Not bad, but one major annoyance

Very comprehensive dictionary, nice search feature, and the price is right. But there is one major annoyance: the signs are all videos (as opposed to some other ASL apps that use animations) so it takes a second or two for each sign to load. To save space the videos are cropped very short. And they only play once before returning immediately to the dictionary. So if you want to watch the video again (which you almost always do because of how fast they go) you have to wait for it to load again. Hopefully they'll fix this in the next release.

Very extensive

This app is great for those like myself who are trying to learn sign language, and on top of that it's only $0.99, my only complaint is that the videos are a bit dark. I hope in the next update they add a "favorite sign" menu on there, I mean, it's pretty hard to keep track of 4,800 signs.
Other than that this is the best ASL app I have. I recomend it to anyone intrested in ASL
