Love this App, which is my news source -- especially when I am on travel

I have pretty much switched from the paper version to the web version of The Post. Great for the updates on the locked screen and instant access to the articles. App is efficient and friendly.
Questions:
1. When will you incorporate an auto update with my paper subscription?
2. Why does the emails from WAPO with the links not go to the iPad and iPhone apps automatically?

My morning ritual

Love the app, love the convenience of reading the news on something that is just a few inches wide and long instead of a huge newspaper that gets spread over everything, and the daily waste of that paper.
This is my new normal. News on demand, in my hands, any time, any place. Updates as they arrive. Love it.

A real pleasure!

My entry into the WAPO was via a promotion of the blue app was very disappointing. Then weeks later I discovered this black one which is as close to reading the full paper in an app form as possible. A real pleasure. Not sure why the blue app even exists. I must be missing something.

Great enjoyment from WAPO.

You offer a quick update on current events. I receive The NYT, but that is yesterday's news. I spent 4 years at Georgetown. DC was a marvelous town in which to attend college. I am 77 and have a hard time understanding what has occurred in our country. Actually, I know but it is so disheartening.

Great reporting, stimulating op-ed page

I enjoy this app daily. Saves me the cost of NYT app and has some solid reporting and thoughtful editorials.
April 2017 update: I am now a paid subscriber---read it every day!
Still true in April 2017: The comments from readers are sad, though--so many haters and weak thinkers. Occasional perceptive commenters, but overall readers' "contributions" are not much better than partisan diatribes anywhere on the web.
Even worse on April 29: Why give MSM-hater Trump space to editorialize about his first 200 days with no fact-check or opportunity for readers to comment. That is bending over backwards way too far.
July 13: App is easy to use. Articles are timely and thorough. Appreciate the range of editorials.

Top-quality journalism

The interface has improved over the years, and the writing itself is the best out there, along with the Wall Street Journal's and the New York Times' writing. This is the first app I turn to for news, even before the Times app and Apple's aggregator, which, once configured to my liking, works extremely well.

App is excellent

I'm not going to wax eloquent about the Washington Post. It is my understanding that I am rating the app--not content. The app is excellent. I especially like the photos after a big 'to-do', whether it's a happy to-do such as the Oscars or a tragedy. I always know news will be broken-down to give history and explanations of current happenings. I enjoy a 'quick and dirty' rundown of the day's news if I'm in a hurry and don't have time to read at my leisure. This app provides both. All-in-all, I feel the app is one of the better of news sources I've tried. Thanks!

One of the coequal twin pillars of journalism

What can one say about the Washington Post that hasn't already been said? As a New Yorker, my deepest loyalty will always been to my beloved hometown paper, the Times, but both papers are crucial to the fabric of our society—even when (or perhaps especially when) they draw the ire of their fans and critics alike for their inevitable human shortcomings. The Post is the home of Woodward and Bernstein and their many excellent colleagues and acolytes, and currently, under the exemplary editorial stewardship of the great Marty Baron, the Post ably retains its rightful place as one of the coequal twin pillars of daily print/newspaper journalism. There's a reporting arms race going on between the Post and the Times, with each trying to out-scoop the other every day—and the country and its civil society are the principle beneficiaries. (And hey! Subscriptions are up, as is readership: an encouraging sign.) Long may the Post maintain its standard of excellence, and long may the press continue to hold our public servants to the high standards and aspirations that we expect of and deserve from them.

Works for me!

I think it just gets better with the integration of different functionality. The 3D photo app is interesting but hard to use with white walls and ceilings
The evolving app gets better for me. The organization and curation works for me. The controls on the bottom cause me to accidentally enter different views or the print edition. At first it was annoying, but now it is like flipping through the print edition of any newspaper as you find interesting articles
This app seems to get maligned but works well for us as subscribers to the print edition when we are traveling or working

Sign in from Twitter - broken

I frequently see links to WaPo stories on Twitter. Even though I purchased the paid app subscription through iTunes, I get prompted to "sign-in" through the app. After a few emails back and forth, I have given up. Guess what? The New York Times app (also a paid subscription) always lets me read the article linked from Twitter. Tech support - maybe ask the Times for help?
UPDATED: Well, thanks for the offer to contact WaPo support. Been there done that and you were not able to help. Your last email asked that I use my .edu email address. This is the second time WaPo support has suggested this as a fix. I'll just open the app when I want to read an article and forget about getting this to work.

Hooked on the Washington Post

I've been a New York Times reader for many years. Recently I was offered a free one year subscription to the Post through my local newspaper. I figured hey, why not? Six months later and I am absolutely hooked on the Post. It is truly journalism at its finest. They seem to scoop more often than their competitors when it comes to the most important and impactful political stories of the day. The writing is clear and concise, and the analysis thought-provoking. Regarding the app itself, the functionality is top-notch and intuitive for the average user. Whoever decided to run a marketing campaign by giving complementary subscriptions through local papers in order to hook new customers, let me just say that I won't be hesitating on renewal when my free year is up!

It's almost there!

Update:
Unfortunately, it seems that some of the video problems have returned and that many of the in article hyperlinks take you to a website that is slow to load at best and sometimes doesn't load at all. Do not experience the same with the other major news outlets.
Original:
Over time the app has definitely improved in stability, layout and readability. I really wish there was a way that the app could have the crossword and Second Glance built in. I know it is definitely possible because another major, national newspaper headquartered here in the DMV has it in theirs. As for Second Glance, it could be as simple as including it in PDF format and giving the user a pen tool (and eraser tool) to circle the differences. I'd change my rating to 5 stars if that happened!!

Badly placed buttons and ads mar otherwise reasonable (but not stellar) app

The Buttons are placed to be hit easily while scrolling (scrolling is, of course, a necessity to use the app). The worst offender is the Print Edition button which is frequently hit and opens up the App Store; I clearly already have the WO app so don't see the motivation to have me constantly seeing another app I clearly don't want—maybe take me there once, but … The ads are frequently inserted in the stories and take me away from the WP app as well; if I use the app a lot I clearly have a subscription, so repeatedly trying to further raise money from me seems counterintuitive. At least they could make the buttons (at a minimum, ads on a paid subscription are of doubtful subscriber or business value as well) smaller (less frequent) or optional.
All that said, I keep using the app and maintain my subscription. But the problems could drive one to alternative news sources, a possibility that would seem to discourage such poor usability “features.” But if an alternative with journalistic integrity (local-reporting value a plus) then all bets are off.

Odd pop-up

The content is what I expect from a world leading national publication (left-leaning). Finally the comics are included in the app (no big deal to some, oddly missing for others). There's still the thing with the 'new article' pop-up. Clicking on the pop-up simply takes one to the top of the current page which has no new article. The new article is imbedded somewhere in the online edition. What does it serve one to know there may be new content but no clue as to what or where it is? Feedback to WaPo provides only that the pop-up serves the intended function, letting readers know there's new content, that's it. Sort of like having a real-time editor for the print edition tell you while you're reading, "By the way, we've just slipped in a new couple of paragraphs somewhere in the paper, have a nice day."

Easy to use

I'm a print subscriber so I get the digital version as part of my subscription. I alternate back and forth between the iPhone and the paper edition. Each has its advantages; the paper edition is much easier to browse since moving from story to story is as easy as flipping a paper page. The digital edition is very well organized and up to date and I enjoy reading it anywhere I have my phone. The best of both worlds! FYI, the iOS version is much superior to the Kindle version on my Kindle Fire whose interface is somewhat clunky compared to iOS.

My go to news app first thing in the morning

We are old fashioned print subscribers, but we appreciate the Post app, too, especially when we are traveling and are without our newspaper. It's the first news source I open every day, still in bed, to get a weather report and the top headlines. Generally, the app works well.
One complaint I have is that the Search function has trouble finding specific articles. This week for example, I read an article in the paper version that I wanted to share immediately with friends. I went to the app and tried to find the article to send by email. I put in search terms, including the full exact headline finally. I tried it by the reporter's name. I finally gave up and wrote the reporter directly. He responded within a couple of days and I appreciated him, but the immediacy of the moment had passed. The Post app search function has failed me multiple times. Even given my technological limitations, I shouldn't have these problems. It needs improvement.
One request for the Weather Gang is to include the national weather map that appears in the printed Post daily. I realize I can go to a dedicated weather app to get maps, but I like the Post map, which shows me at a glance what is happening nationally. I love the photographs that appear with the Weather Gang report, however. I subscribe to the digital version of the NYT as well, but the Post is my go to app first thing in the morning.

Stay informed

Notwithstanding the bad perception that the media has by some, it cannot not be avoided, but the Washington Post (WP) continues to inform its readers.
The WP app is not perfect, but the ability to get important and breaking news is very easy. It's easy to use user-interface, and timely update of breaking news is top notch. I'm glad I paid for the subscription.
No new organization is perfect, and most don't claim to be. The Washington Post backs up its claim as a true news source. This app is a great way to stay on-top of the day's news and events, and the subscription service is definitely worth the cost.

For 2017:

We have the very great gift of a Constitutionally guaranteed right to a free press. This is an app that will inoculate you against the epidemic of fake news. And I don't care what single flaw you find in this app,(I too am frustrated by online headlines that don't match print headlines), you need to ask yourself if you could do better and then take a beat and reflect upon times in your own life when you produced a work product was a little less than absolutely perfect. WE HAVE FREE PRESS IN THIS COUNTRY. SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL NEWSPAPER BECAUSE THEY WILL PROTECT YOU, YOUR FAMILY, AND THIS GREAT DEMOCRACY BY SPEAKING TRUTH TO POWER AND TO ALL OF US. For that to happen, you need to open up your checkbook, subscribe to the print edition, and then download this great app.

My "Home Town" News Source

As a native-born Washingtonian, I have been reunited with the Post! Don't know how I would have survived this past election year without the excellent journalism & full coverage of national & world news! Now living in a rural small town, I need this connection. In general, the app has been easy to use & I particularly enjoy the inclusion of the videos. A little disconcerting to be told I've hit my limit of stories, but this hasn't happened recently. Now I can enjoy the Post with my morning coffee & throughout the day---love the "alerts" that keep me up to date.

Not for phones!

As a long-term subscriber to WaPo, I'm grateful Jeff Bezos is pumping some $ in. I just wish some would go to the mobile app. Not all of us have iPads to read on, but have to make do with the tiny screens on our phones when away from laptops. But the app is phenomenally clumsy. I can't adjust the size of type, much less with normal movements. It gets hung up FREQUENTLY, showing the screen to urge me to upgrade or whatever. And NEVER LETTING ME READ THE ARTICLE IVE ALREADY PAID FOR!
I'm an old-fashioned woman, and I like to be able to save individual articles - to read later, to share with a friend, maybe to save on a particular topic. Apparently I'm the only person on the planet who likes to do such things - because I can't do it with the phone app.
So if you are going to read on an iPad, I guess the app's fine. But if you are going to attempt to read on a phone, it's hopeless. The funny thing is, I subscribe to the various alerts and summaries that go out during the day - and if I click that link, no problem. Just forget about wanting to go through the paper methodically.

Poor performance on key features

The WP app shows the same deficiencies that have plagued its website for years. (1) Its content and organization, even sections, headlines, content, and date of publication, usually differ from those in the print paper, making pieces in the print edition nearly impossible to find online. (2) Its search engine almost never returns an article from the daily paper, even when you search by author or title. Often, articles in today's paper do not appear until a day or two later, if you are lucky enough to find them. Searching by author never brings up the latest column from the paper. Search engine results are never chronological. (3) the result is a confusing mishmash that makes the site extremely annoying and frustrating to attempt to use. As a result, I try never to use it and was dismayed to hear out-of-town relatives say that they read the WP online daily, knowing that they were not getting a reasonable facsimile of the print edition. Look at the NYT website for a much better model.

Fair

The content is fine, although WaPo's editing is slipping. The iPhone App is relatively stable, but it, like the iPad app, tends to repeat stories in several different menus. Some stay up as "new" for days. So, other than the very top stories, the content is often old and outdated. WaPo's younger generation of reporters also seems to think that "analysis, context, and a reporter's opinion" are more important than simple who, what, when, and where. Don't get me wrong; I like the Post and it's still my go-to for news, but I can't say it's as good as it used to be.
2017 update: There is a significant amount of duplication of content. The same story will appear in two places at once on the same page, sometimes right next to each other. Makes it look like they're putting out more content than they are. Very amateurish, especially for a news site that has been around so long. Someone needs to give each digital page the once over before making it live.

News consumer

Washington Post is a source I feel I can rely on for accurate and factual news as a rule. I hope the goals to maintain these standards remain for the readers to rely on.
I would note, I am torn on how to support our news media in this new technology age. I know how important it is, but if I as a consumer, has to pay for all the different sources, I would go broke just paying for the news. Where we have really lost out is publication of local meetings and financial reports which I thought were legally required to be public information? Where do I go now for this information so I can oversee my local political activities?

Amazing apps for business and Tech news

To be honest, this is an amazing Washington post online news paper apps which is really giving me an opportunity to read the business news that I liked a lot to read about it. For example, Today I did read about one of the biggest electronics companies from Japan which was "Toshiba". They are being charged on corporate governance failure in their business in US. Due to the ease access and smooth editing over business news, I would give the ranking to the app for four and half stars (4.5). Thank you "Washington post"

Post Review

This is a much better app than the older version of the Post for iPad. It loads much faster, videos load somewhat faster, and it is more stable, but still crashes occasionally. The irritating thing about this app is that it tells you when new articles have been posted in a section, but when you click on the New Articles button, it puts you back at the top of the section with no indication of which ones are the new articles. Can't they either be highlighted somehow, or listed in a dropdown from the button or added to the end of the section or something? If I am almost to the end of the section and a new article comes in, if I click the button, I go back to the top of the section without any indicator of what was added or updated.

The #1 app from the #1 US news source

I've been reading the Post front to back for almost a decade now at 30 years old, originally by paper home delivery until I had to move to the west coast this year and switched to the app. I have never seen an app from ANY news source that rivals WaPo's. Intrinsically, this streamlined app is nothing more than a highly functional delivery system for the best news content currently being produced. The nation's most reputable and poignant newspaper now brought to you by Apple's best news app. Bezos has, thus far, apparently managed to modernize the historic paper, all for the better. And for the record, I have zero negatives to report. (Full disclosure Im not affiliated with WaPo in any way, I just get really really into my news)

Love the content; hate the ad interference

The Post is one of my Go-To news sources. I especially like how I can click to stories, after a site refresh, even when I lose Internet service in DC's metro tunnels (although its glitchy and it doesn't work as reliably as I'd expect.)
But the embedded ads in stories (which can fill 40+% of my iPhone screen) are obnoxious: I can barely scroll through a single story without accidently being wisked to an ad site I have no interest in. Post folks: please figure out how to fix this.
While it's now easier to swipe from one section or story to another and quickly scan what's new, it feels like I'm only seeing the most popular stories and missing a lot of the thoughtful stories I know are in the print issue. If I'm paying for the news to use this app there ought to be a way to get what I see in the local paper.

Good w room to get even better

Very good and stable - great content and few freezes. Pretty well organized. My chief gripe is that it seems only the page you were last on updates when you go into airplane mode for a spell. If I want to read multiple sections on a long flight, I need to go to each page I'm going to want to access before I go airplane mode and make sure they update. Otherwise I get cached content from my previous visit. It'd be nice if all contented updated when, say, the top news page did. The NY Times seems to have solved this, or at least it doesn't affect sections I read there as much.
Also, I'm a baseball fan, and the Nationals section doesn't stay current in real time. The same articles sometimes appear for days ahead of the most recent games - or old game coverage from a couple days before will appear before that for the prior day's game (this is a gripe about their online site, too).

Washington Post App

I like this app. I can scroll through the stories easily to find the articles I want to read. The headlines are sometimes misleading in that the article often has a slant different from what I might expect from the headline. This is on the editors and not the app.
The search capability is decent.
I tend to read the post more than I expected to when I first loaded this app. This is a good thing: my previous bias was "I wanted to hold the paper in my hand."
This app now constitutes the majority of my iPhone usage. Who'd a thunk?
My needs are simple for an app to read this "paper". I'm not very demanding for slick or sophisticated features. I like it.

Constantly Stale

It's OK but has lots of irksome traits that will drive you crazy. First, as a longtime user I find the content to be persistently stale and very slow to turnover. Some stories seem to live forever. It's definitely not where you go find the latest news.
The underlying database technology seems inefficient as updating the feeds is an excruciatingly slow process. Plus, as added pain, it really struggles in low(er) bandwidth environments and has no ability to adjust. The ad server appears to really bog the app down.
Most annoying is their habit of just adding duplicated but slightly updated stories to the category feeds resulting in a long scrolling page of stories with new content randomly intermixed with old (but slightly updated and duplicated) stories, where you have to fight your way down the long page to locate new content. Equally annoying is another habit of changing the headline to a story making you believe a new story has been added only to discover that the headline changed but the content is a duplicate of an existing story. Very annoying.
Finally, no access to the comment sections is provided if that is important to you. So three stars is the best I can muster for this app.

iPhone App a Pain to Navigate

This version seems to be the original version. There is another newer WP app for the iPhone. But I prefer this one because it has more categories. For instance u can see just the WP editorials and there are more local stories. I would like to see a breakdown of stories by county and more identification of when a story was published on the headline list. There are some stories weeks old. That's fine but I would like to see the date.
I read about a Kindle interface, but haven't seen it. The IPad version is nice, but I use the iPhone app more.
When you finish reading a story it takes you back to the full category list from the beginning. I would like to go back to the exact spot in the category list that I came from when I started reading a story.

Superb Journalism

I always choose "Don't remind me again" for whenever an app asks me to give a review. However, I had to write the positive review The Washington Post deserved for being the kind of journalists who report and analyze current events while providing historical background when relevant. It seems their reporting does tend to provide a liberal view when analyzing today's issues, but opinion is minimal and does not get in the way of the facts whatsoever. The Washington Post is my favorite news source, next to Reuters and The New York Times.
As for updates, they are relevant but not as frequent as I expected to see them. I'd recommend the CBSNews app for updates.

The Post in Your Pocket

We still subscribe to the print version, but can't always read it all at breakfast, and certainly can't while traveling. This app nicely fills in the cracks and incidentally permits sharing the occasional gem with a friend. Even after some lamentable shrinkage in editorial staff, this remains one of the two best papers in the nation. Live long and prosper. The recently added banner that enables the user to automatically load and later access his/her favorite sections is a welcome addition. The ability to download the content on wifi and access it later when no cell or wifi signal is available is a real boon to travelers. Keep it up.

Best news app

Bad reviews because you have to pay for content? Wash Post does not publish full content for free anywhere. If you want to read a "daily" with professional reporting, this is the app for you. Could be my age, but I believe people should be paid for their work. The app is easy to navigate and the ads are less annoying than others. I like reading my news. I don't like waiting for a 15-30 second ad and watch somebody read a single 30 second story at a time. Upgrades do not ruin the app like virtually every other app in this category. Room for improvement

For reading news, the app's platform seems ok but the content tends to be lacking. I find it pretty abhorrent that a news outfit such as WaPo would routinely mix one or two actual news articles with a host of op-eds and columns with clickbait-y titles on the "top stories" page. There should be some distinction for those who are looking for actual news rather than someone's opinion.
I use the app mainly to access Capital Weather Gang's forecasts and commentary, which are almost always top notch. However, I often find that the 7 day forecast overview doesn't match what the text says. For example, this week for a period of time it was showing rain on Monday but I never saw that in any forecast. All the local predictions were indicating precipitation on Tuesday. It's not the first time I've noticed such a disconnect and I think that really needs to be fixed.

Good journalism costs money and is worth every penny

It makes me angry when people complain that they have to pay for news content. Get over it. Chances are you want to get paid for the work you do, and you believe the work you do has value. Journalists do some of the most important work in a free society to keep us informed and our leaders accountable. They should be able to do this work I way that enables them to feed their families just as you do. For that, we should be willing to compensate them. Or else, we can subsist on "free" content -- written by the people who are willing to pay for the privilege of manipulating our minds and our democracy. I choose to pay for independent, fact-based journalism.

The New Face of Journalism

The Washington Post in my opinion is and has been simply the finest newspaper serving a major metropolitan market in the United States. It is the only paper I read for general news as well as the Washington scene. The weekend edition has no equal. I was skeptical at first at the inevitable migration from print to digital. I need not have been concerned. I cannot imagine lugging around a huge newspaper- extra huge on the weekend- and getting my fingers and dress shirts smudged with printers ink. The transition works. The newspaper is in fine shape. Only now I use a tablet. Not bad saving myriad trees from being butchered. Hah! 5 Stars.

Best real newspaper app around

I love the Washington Post app. I read it every day. There's no other major newspaper in the country that allows you to read all of its content for free. I don't know how long this will last, but I hope it lasts forever. The articles and writers are better then the New York Times, but more importantly is the fact that I can access the whole paper every day. I live in New York City so all of my commute comes underground. All I need to do is load the sections I want to read before I get on the subway, and I can read as much as I want every day on the way to and from work. Most of my arguments/sighting of news comes from the Washington Post because of it. The paper itself has complete and total credibility, and as a result I post numerous articles from the Washington post to my Facebook wall, and whenever discussing the news I am always citing the Washington Post. I love this app, and is probably my favorite, and most important app on my phone.

My User Experience is GREAT so far.

I enjoy this app daily. It supplements my monitoring of the local business environment. To get a fifth star, I'd like to see the Capital Business, Wonkblog, On Small Business, and National/Global business news sections more prominently featured- say relocate them from the MORE menu to the primary toolbar on iPhone. Even though it's a national paper, I don't see a reason to bury the business news so far within the app. Why cede readers to Washington Business Journal or the Daily Record? Another approach could be to allow customization of favorite sections, like google news does. Haven't used it on iPad yet, but I'm sure that's great too. Keep up the great work, this is a reliable, fast and well-performing app with many features.

Excellent source of news and opinion articles

The Washington Post consistently produces timely and thoroughly researched articles on events and situations in the US and throughout the World. I also appreciate the Op-Ed pieces, it is good to see well written pieces representing different perspectives. It is easy to miss that there are other than headline articles, but they are there under the menu with somewhat over generalized headings. Suggestion: Putting subheadings on the menu would improve UX. The App is reliable, articles are easy to read and I like that you can save articles within the App without needing to create an account.

Washington Post

I've been a reader of the Post for over 10 years now - though the first two years I was living in Colorado. Had to find one in a hotel, news store or airport...and usually all I found was the Sunday edition. My BA is in Journalism, and I wanted the old-fashioned read - feeling the newsprint crinkle as I turned the pages, seeing a bit of ink rub off onto my hand - and smiling. I found the who, what, where, when and sometimes the why in the columns. The editor in me noticed the words broken a letter too soon at the end of a line, wrong tense of a verb, and (shudder) a rare misspelled word. They were few and far between, but I enjoyed the challenge. Reading from that paper copy was like going back in time to my college days in California, reading the San Francisco Chronicle and the San Jose Mercury News. Everything was logical, well-vetted, and yet....imperfect. I lived to find those tiny errors. For a moment I could be an editor again, and make things right for those who read after me. Oh yes, I did actually read most of the entire paper also. News is a passion of mine these days, and the Post is the best purveyor of news in the USA. I just don't have to make a special trip to find one anymore. I just tap on a screen and up it comes. It's harder than ever to find errors now. So I take care of my 'need to tweak' to perfection with the Sunday Post, delivered smartly to my driveway, rounded by a fine rubber band. I have work to do.

Excellent Resource

I really enjoy reading the news on this app on my morning commute to work. The rail ride is about a good 30-40 minutes which is ample time to catch up on the news. Thanks to the application design, stories are easy and efficient to browse through. I do like the functionality to share stories, the breaking news push notifications and the integrated weather. The only reason the app does not receive a 5 star rating is the fact that some of the media attachments that you would otherwise be able to see on a desktop computer, you cannot see them on this app.

Antiquated App - no multimedia, slow refresh

For hard national and world news reporting, WaPo is great. For general local coverage you're far better suited subscribing to neighborhood or city-wide blogs or picking up a free City Paper. On cultural and lifestyle coverage, WaPo long ago stopped even trying to compete with other publications. Their columnists from all political ends are lower-middle-brow or just tow a predictable party line (Carolyn Hax is refreshing though). Anything that falls under "news analysis" and isn't a major national or world issue, such as subtle legal or economic issues, will be better covered by other papers.
The App is antiquated compared to the NY Times and Financial Times (the latter isn't s true app but an HTML 5 webpage).
- Articles frequently say that they can't display media
- there are no interactive features whatsoever
- pictures can't be zoomed in on with a tap
- the top left-right placement of sections is hard to navigate
- no way to see to comments
- crashes more than any other app I have
- all this and it still manages to be one of the largest apps on my phone
- refreshes irregularly; even user-initiated refresh frequently doesn't kick off a refresh

Lovely app with persistent issue

I enjoy the app tremendously--great content, it is easy to use and customize. However, I have two issues with the app:
First, it does not handle lost Internet/cell connections well, resulting in frequent crashes and stalls. I frequently switch airplane mode on and off to read an article while the app tries to connect with a weak signal; otherwise you are stuck waiting for the connection to time out to open article (already preloaded!)
My other gripe is that I cannot pinch-zoom photos. I read on an iPhone and would really like to see some of the detail in the excellent photography that the paper publishes.

Nice to have

The app is reliable but untemarkable. If you want a decent selection of what the Post is writing, then you'll be happy. The Post itself occasionally does some good enterprise reporting you don't get elsewhere, which is worth looking out for. But it's overall disappointing -- predictable opinions often laced with tiresome snark, standard-issue click bait charts (though usually a cut above), and news that's presumably trustworthy if not particularly special in its approach. The article selection can be a bit strange- multiple inconsequential headlines to wade through to get any meat. Of course that only matters if you're a meat-eater. Bottom line -- I wouldn't want to do without it but I don't think I'd really miss it much either. Too bad.

Very very good

The WP app is very very good. The articles are great, just as the online version, with colorful pictures included. There are features to put your own 'hot' sections in a horizontal scroll at the top. The reason for not giving it five stars is because of the little technical issues. When on their web site, there is a 20-article-a-month limit without subscribing, unless you have this app, they say. I am writing this review because I have the app. And I searched high and low with where to make the connection. But despite a good effort, this remains a mystery to me. The app advertisement here also shows a nice graphic of the metro map. I could not find it anywhere in the WP sections. I did a search. Still nothing. So, I give it four stars. When the bugs have been cleaned up, I'll give it five. Very very good!

Great news app, but recently not as timely as NYT

WashPo continues to be one of the best newspapers in the US and this app has, until last few months, been fantastic, especially for those of us who live inside the beltway. But I can't give it four stars because recently it seems like it is updated far less frequently than before and certainly with big news it can be 3-4 hours behind the NYTimes app, which I gladly pay $15 a month to subscribe to. Case in point, even after updating the content, three hours after they caught the lone surviving Boston bomber the WashPo app said he was still at large!!! How is this possible? Not sure why WashPo is allowing their app to get so far behind their twitter feeds, etc, I haven't checked their website to see if it also lags behind but I've always known it to be super current. If the editors would update the content as fast as they do their website this app would be five stars for sure.

Changed performance

This app is running on an iPod Touch with 16 Gbyt of memory under OS 5.x, always updated to the latest version (but not upgraded to 6.x) and initially it worked perfectly, since about March this year. However, for the past two month, it crashes nearly every time an article is loading -- although the starting page with the headlines is always fine. The crashes still occur after re-installing the app. No idea why it is so sensitive to content; perhaps it's the pictures. There is still about 5 Gbyt free memory available though.
Otherwise, the design and functionality of the app are well thought out and I regret that I can't use it reliably anymore.

Not totally there yet. Almost.

Ok. I'm fussy. This goes well above and beyond the last Post App, but come on, the home page has got to have a landscape option. Flipping the handheld from landscape to portrait every time one goes from the home page and back is just not a refined app. I of course can do it but in this world of personalized options this just seems an oversight.
The photos on the top of the home page are a nice touch but seems to be an incomplete thought by the designers. They take up space and they move too fast read copy and consume the image. Then, on slide shows or with any individual photo, I can't zoom into the images sometimes rendering highly detailed photos as unreadable.
There are a lot of excellent features in this app but I can only give it a 2 star rating as I think the app falls short on the most important feature of any good app. Landscape on home page and zoom ability into photos and slide shows.
Take it as constructive criticism.

Excellent app

With the recent upgrades, the Washington Post app is much improved compared to previous iterations. The app used to crash quite frequently; that isn't happening now. And I like the push notifications. If WaPo can provide breaking coverage with their push notifications better than CNN or Fox News, I may consider deleting push notifications on either CNN or Fox News. And the user interface and readability on the iPhone has always been fantastic!! The only thing keeping me from giving this app a 5 is a need to see a larger sample size before I can determine if this software iteration does indeed crash less than previous iterations.

Elegant, efficient, essential

This app should be used as a model by other news providers: how to do it right. Content is displayed in an uncluttered, easy-to-read fashion. Ads, while present, are discrete/minimalist, appearing at the bottom of the screen only while the site navigation is open; no screen hijacks, pop-ups, or distracting flashes/noises. And the navigation -- which slides smoothly out of the way while you read, freeing up screen real estate-- is elegant and intuitive. Bottom line: great content served up by a great app. Because of this, the WP has become my go-to news source. How I wish all my favorite news providers used this app!

Terrific App -- Latest Update puts it on par with the best news apps

The latest version of the WP app puts it on par with the best news apps for iPhone, including NYTimes and AP. New WP app dedicates significantly more screen space for articles, increases the amount of news links, and provides intuitive navigation to various sections of the newspaper. Navigation is different than similar apps, but once you figure it out it is very easy to use. Stability seems fine. Honestly, I'm stumped by the negative reviews. This latest upgrade directly addressed many of the problems reviewers requested. With the new improvements in version 1.5.0, this is now my go-to news app. Way to go WP!

Inadequate iPhone App, BUT Their News is Good

O.K. layout, great news, thanks. The news is really what the app should be about so it wins on that score. But $2 is a steep price for something that doesn't work as advertized.
The app posts only mobile links to facebook instead of normal HTML, so it's useless to pass along stories to someone reading facebook from a desktop computer. Although there's a link to Wash Post Support, support is inadequate and you'll have to hunt someone down. When I contacted them, they had their mobile editor wearing two hats and offering support. Too much drama for something that could be easier.
By comparison, Fluent News' paid version of its aggregator worked flawlessly the first time, and even has a saved search feature from which you can filter your own news. That feature alone (because it works) is totally worth their price of admission. Interesting, also, that inside Fluent News the Washington Post's articles don't display at all. So while the Wash Post has its news down, their technology is absolutely lacking.

I love TWP on the iPhone.

Few newspapers come close to the reporting quality, depth, and breadth of The Washington Post. I'm a long time subscriber and have TWP's web site on my iPhone home page. For the past few weeks, I was perplexed about why I was unable to view any of the articles. Finally, I figured it out. Not through TWP, but by Googling the problem. I am more than happy to fork over $1.99 for a year of TWP (frankly, it's a steal), but would recommend including a link to your new iPhone app when people attempt to log onto TWP from their iPhone, the same way CNN links to their paid app. The app rocks, but youve got to drive people to it or you'll lose them. :-)

Why did the Washington Post make such a hass of this application?

I am a long-time Washington Post reader. I have home delivery and thought this was the way to see those articles that I may have missed due to time constraints.
The original program was released with obvious bugs. That is unusual in the AppStore. The update is not much better.
The program originally jammed on page 2 or 3 when reading an article. Now, it just hangs up loading information on a rock-solid connection for a 3G iTouch.. And, the ads and some articles just don't show up but leave a nice blank space for up to a minute, if they ever show up.
The upgrade was an improvement, but..... the layout and the look and feel are very amateur. The Washington Post can do better.
This app looks like the "Lost Cow News" and not one of the best newspapers in the country.
Frankly, this is an example of a great newspaper just making a mess of something that is so important to their digital future.
Too bad.

Horrible Navigation

I'm a local resident, so that's one of the first things I want: local news. Hmph. Can't find it easily. You have to know to scroll across the top for it -- the word "local" isn't visible anywhere when you first open the app. Then, the default is DC news. Well, I live in Virginia, so I then have to know to tap an even smaller link for more headlines by jurisdiction. Repeat the same pattern if I want Nationals news -- nope, Redskins are the default. And the real kicker? If I reopen the app, everything goes back to the default settings, so I have to really dig for Virginia news and Nationals news again and again and again. Really poor navigation. Very surprised one of the customizable icons isn't local news. Wonder why. That's weird. I thought the Post was redoubling its local news coverage, but apparently the app developers didn't get that memo. The Post also has dozens and dozens of blogs on its Web site, but only a few on this app. All in all, at least there's finally a Post app, but it needs some work for us locals who live beyond DC and don't like the Redskins.
