QuakeWatch has been the most popular paid earthquake app in the App Store for over 8 years now -- used by schools, relief agencies, media outlets, and thousands of people around the world curious about earthquakes near to them, family, or friends.
It has reached the App Store Top 100, and #1 in News, multiple times.
It is a feature-rich reference guide, free of ads, of the latest magnitude 1.0 and larger earthquakes from around the world as provided by ten worldwide sources including the US Geological Survey and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre. Find out when they happened, where they happened, how big they were, and more. All in an easy-to-use interface without losing space to banner ads!
The key features of QuakeWatch include:
• An interactive world map view with tectonic plates showing reported earthquakes over the past week. Pan and zoom the map to focus on hot spots and click the details button to see the quake report. Also the ability to replay the earthquakes in order.
• Sort the listing by the most recent earthquakes.
• Sort by the largest earthquakes over the past week.
• Sort by the closest earthquakes to your location and see the distance and direction from your position.
• Sort by earthquakes nearest to a place anywhere on the earth that you easily specify. Great for tracking quakes near family members. Shows the distance and bearing from them.
• Choose from reporting services in the US, Europe, Canada, Mexico, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Iceland, and Italy.
• Select the tsunami icon in the toolbar for quick access to the latest tsunami information for the Pacific, US West Coast & Alaska, Australia, and Japan.
• Send earthquake information to yourself or others through email, Twitter, Facebook, or SMS text messaging.
• Filter out smaller earthquakes from the list by setting the minimum shown to be between 1.0 and 6.0.
• Select an earthquake from the list to view more information along with a live map of its location and the ability to show nearby earthquakes.
• Selecting the blue additional details button will take you to the reporting web site integrated into the application for more information about the earthquake which may include distances from cities, historical maps, shake maps, etc., and then easily return to the list.
• Universal app - supports the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch.
• Supports quick view multitasking on the iPad on iOS 10 and newer.
• iPod touch and iPad WiFi users can manually specify their current location if greater accuracy is needed.
• The ability to define local earthquakes within a radius of your location. Then sort by "Closest" to see all local earthquakes sorted by distance or the most recent.
• Earthquakes within the last 2 hours and within your local range are colored blue for quick identification.
• All times are shown in your time zone.
• No banner ads.

Good app - updated

I have to say after trying about 15 earthquake apps, i have found this one to be the easiest and nicest to use. The data is presented very well on the list page and the fonts are readable. Also the map is reasonably well done.
By the way, the ability to adjust font size is much appreciated. Thank you!
The one function this app is lacking is push notifications. I read once where they have some agreement not to do notices but that greatly reduces this app's value as you have to have a different earthquake app with notices to know an earthquake just happened and where so you can look them up on this one. In time, everyone will just stop using (and purchasing) this app if the developers don't add that functionality.

Best Quake App

Previously I used the extension "Quake Alert"for Chrome. Since it stopped working correctly I began an app search and after careful consideration I decided to use "QUAKEWATCH." The best quake monitoring app I have ever seen. I love its versatility and ease of use. Very informative, loads quickly, & provides all the details one would look for in a quake app. I highly recommend this app if you are a geology enthusiast. Great app for beginners to teachers.

The Very Best Earthquake App

The interface for this app has always offered more information than others in an innovative and intuitive format, and it just keeps getting better.
Quakewatch V. 3.6 is simply wonderful. The maps are beautiful and faster than ever, and the short-lived landscape glitch on iPad is all fixed. The plate boundaries lines are even clearer now. The index page has been nicely revamped with more information displayed in accordance with system font settings. The nearby earthquake map pins are functioning perfectly and they make tracking foreshocks/aftershocks easy as a finger tap.
Many thanks to the developer for a great job.

Great Layout but very delayed & No Alert

I really love this app. It has the best and easiest layout of all the quake apps. It has a lot of information that's easy to access. However I just noticed recently that the information is delayed a lot of times, sometimes by hours and a few times it was more than a day. It didn't used to be like that. Please fix this issue. Also what would make this app a lot greater is if it had an alert that you can set for earthquakes happening around you. With a cool alert sound. The other thing that would be really cool is if the fault lines were added to the map. That would take a little time but it would be nice to just have the major ones on the map, at least in California. I would definitely like to delete my other earthquake apps, but they're the only one that alerts me with a voice that says "an earthquake has occurred!" And the other has a map of the faults. Would be nice to have it all in one app. If you could very soon, add an alert option at least, that would make this a 5 star rated app. I look forward to the next update.

My go to earthquake app

I live in an earthquake prone area on the north coast of California. There was a hiccup recently with the USGS feeds, but the response of the developer corrected the issue. I have been using this app for several years, and I have tried others to track earthquakes. This app has been my go to app because it gives me the local coverage I want. Props to the developer for being responsive to issues. I like the pin colors that vary with magnitudes.👍

Great application of technology!

This app exemplifies the benefits of bringing different technologies together to change how we see our world. Living in Southern California, I put this on my iPhone's home page years ago and often show it to people when I am traveling.
The way the app slices and dices the data is great, allowing you quick access to what is locally relevant and well as a global view.
Definitely a "must have" app for global citizens.

Quake watch something happened 3 weeks ago and USGS is not working. Therefore I get no info on US.

Speaking from Anchorage Alaska, it's wonderful to have such quick access to information when you feel that random bump in the night, or the room starts shaking.
Since most of the buildings are earthquake supported, the floors, especially in the larger buildings can vibrate with the heavy equipment rolling by. This app is especially helpful when we get that 4.0+ quake, and we feel the extra sway of the trusses!

Fabulous - Still!!! 🎉🎉👍

Still fabulous and the customer support is fabulous as well... I emailed about the USGS feed, it stopped working and I got a reply on the best way to fix the issue in a couple of hours! Great app and I've been using it for at lest 4 years. The best one that I've found!
You can set up this app to see the data you want and filter what you don't. It has additional data that can be set, not just USGS. They also provide the links in the app to set up email/ test notifications. For EQ or Tsunami's. Highly recommended. I just wish the Pacific Rim wasn't split on the map-that's the most active area.

Was great...now just okay

I used to really like this app--was accurate & quick at sending measurements, but it doesn't do that anymore. Now only seeing updated quake info from 4-5 days ago. Can't get an accurate reading until long after the fact. Might just be it needs an update, but if it's not fixed soon, I'm looking elsewhere. Still don't have info from a quake that occurred yesterday--it's showing ones from Sunday. Not very helpful.

With earthquake activity and acuity rising this is a MUST HAVE APP regardless of where you live!! I utilize it several times a day, since I live next to the San Andreas Fault. Quake Watch 🌎

This is one of my favorite apps! EVER! I have learned so much about the earth and how very active it really is from the surface to the core!
Here in Oklahoma, we have experienced a marked increase in seismic activity over the past few years. This app. details the different types, causes and consequences of different types of quakes! I have learned so much. The quake occurrence information is updated immediately all the stats and info you could ever think of relating to each quake! You set the parameters!
It's amazing. If you love learning about this living home, our Earth, get this app.... TODAY! I love the inclusion of tsunamis, volcanoes and maps of all things related to dynamic surface of our planet.
🌟 TEACHERS🌟 this would be great for students to have on their tablets, so much educational material is included! The maps are interactive

So far it seems OK, more or less what I was looking for, worth a buck.

The one I come back to....

I keep trying other quake apps when the come out, just to see if anyone can make quake app function better in some way, but they never do. I have used this app for about three years or maybe longer, and it is always the one I keep installed when I delete the others. This one just works for me on my iPad 4. There are one or two others that I like, but things like the satellite imagery not rendering properly or quickly enough when I zoom in and out are just not problems that I ever have with THIS app. So, this one is the keeper for me!

Worth Every Penny!

I've been searching for a seismology app for quite a while now, and have really had difficulty finding one that is, well, good. I stumbled across the Quakewatch app in a magazine and read the well-written article on it. I decided to take a chance and spend the 99¢ on it. How glad I am I did! The app is great, easy to use and navigate through, and has a plethora of information on each quake, including intensity, depth, time and location. It's truly worth every penny. Well done, Quakewatch!

Great app

I check this app at least twice a day. I live in earthquake country so I am always curious to know where the world is shaking and bouncing. The only frustrating thing is not being able to see the whole Pacific Ocean but I understand that comes from using the Google maps. One thing that would be nice is an archive, as the app only shows about 24 hours of events. Another would be to sort by location using a variable radius from one quake.

Excellent coverage and customization

There is a lot in this app that is useful for those of us in earthquake regions. When I feel a quake I like to guess the magnitude and the fault based on my estimate of the distance between the P and S waves. It's a hobby I picked up by living near California's San Andreas fault and a bunch of faults in Southcentral Alaska. This app gets me answers more conveniently than Websites.
I'm a bit mystified about the app's connection to the USGS earthquake notification system. It seems to me that if a quake is big enough to be concerned about then your dishes will be on the floor and you may not need an email notification.

Great feature set

I recently moved out west after living in Florida most of my life and I instantly became paranoid about being caught off guard by an earthquake. This app keeps me up-to-date by the minute plus provides (recent) historical data, thus quelling my fears (almost) completely.
Quake Watch provides incredible detail about seismic activity and even links you right up with USGS for even more "stuff" such as easy to understand scientific data and even tsunami alerts and details. I also have the "Earthquakes" app and it pales in comparison to all you get with Quake Watch.
Thanks for the peace of mind you provide with this app.

Just one problem with this app

Awesome application ..... I think most should have this specially the people near coastal areas..... Better to be safe then sorry ..... This app helped me to develope a more accurate way to predict large earthquakes etc !!!!! I also would like to see on this application the depth of the earthquakes on the list right now I have to open each earthquake to view the depth of the quake ... LOVE IT!

I check this app multiple times a day. Love the layout. Wish it had push notifcation and not rely on USGS to send me email or SMS which costs me $ Suggestion would be to show grayed out pins of the last several quakes in the area of a particular quake that I look at - if there are several to show, to get a historical view of what is going on in the area.
But otherwise 5 stars!!!

Good vibrations

This is a great app. One teeny tiny suggestion: when viewing quakes closest to you under the "closest" folder, maybe actually list them from closest to furthest instead of randomly jumbled. Fascinating! You've come a long way baby from the days of Fortran & Cobalt & computer punch cards. Sorry missed the ride. Had twins & they were all consuming! But they & their friends are all in the business of oil & gas drilling, exploration, energy management, leasing, & producing. So like the exponential difference between EQ RS ratings, by having twins, the world will benefit from the domino effect. The general public thinks our earth is not supposed to move. Also has other additional info... Link to American Red Cross, link to emergency preparedness supplies, quick facts, and more. 

Educational

I check this app all the time. It's interesting to watch the activity shift from one area to another. Having the world map centered over the ring of fire might a more appropriate layout for observing fault zones. Also, having the ability to zoom in on an area and load quake pins from the past month or year would be cool.

Fantastic app

With relatives in Japan and living near several faults in SF Bay Area myself, this app is an essential. Sometimes scary until the relatives are reached, but comforting to see that the intensity and frequency are easing over time.
For the question about Arkansas--Fracting is what is happening. Oil companies force water under pressure deep into the rock below to reach the oil and gas. It causes quakes, which they deny are linked. But the same thing happened in Basel, Switzerland, some years ago and in the Geysers Area, Cal. Last year. Some people think others are stupid.

Great, more maps please.

I love this app! I'm an 8th grade earth science teacher and use this with my classes all the time. The one feature I would love to see added is a more movable map. It's annoying that I can't out the pacific ocean in the center of the screen. I also can't see Antarctica. I know Antarctica doesn't often get earthquakes, but a more accurate map would rock.

Quakewatch is Now CrashWatch - Iphone and Ipad

Version 2.4.1. works like a charm. thanks for working to make the app do its quality "thing". For those of us in professional fields where content information like earthquakes and geospatial visualization are crucial, the quick attempt to fix what was broken is tremendously appreciated.

Love it

Just got this app today and love it! I live in So Cal and like to keep tabs on the shakes. Until today it was hassle with the USGS site. This app gives me lots of search options. I'm crazy about the map choices. Great job. Great app. The only improvement I would want is accurate prediction of future quakes. I'm not holding my breath on that one.

great eartquake app

After reading a bunch of reviews, I chose this quake app and I'm glad I did. Seems to have everything you could want. Even though it doesn't have push notifications it does include clear instructions re setting up earthquake notifications via email/SMS directly from the USGS, which is ideal since that's where the data is coming from anyway.

The very best earthquake app

This app is outstanding at the very least. Whatever earthquake information you need you can find it here. The app allows you to personalize it for your liking. As you can chose your exact location so you know how close earthquakes are to you. You can also set up the app not to notify you of the smaller quakes. A must for any First Responder

A must have if you live in an earthquake prone area

Living in So. California this application is an absolute must! I turn it on immediately when the earth starts shaking and get detailed info faster than any news channel can give you. Less than a minute after we had a big one on Easter Sunday I knew how far we were from the epicenter and how big the quake was - while my chandelier was still swinging... this app is on my first page since then. Thanks for creating such a great app!

Great app!

I got this app when it used to be free but I would still pay a buck for it. It comes directly from the USGS website where I always used to run to when an earthquake happened to get instant news. They are the first to update and the app is no exception. I'm a geology nerd and I <3 this app!

Fast and accurate

I don't often write reviews unless it's my absolute favorite. This app is fast, accurate, and reliable. Every time I felt an earthquke in south California, I would check this handy app first. The results comes up within minutes of the earthquke. Thanks for the app. Please support the developer and make this app even better in the future.

It's ok

There are a few different options out there when it comes to earthquake monitoring apps, and based on what I'd read, I thought this was the best. However, after purchasing it I have a few misgivings with the biggest being that this app just loads the USGS website! I can do that myself, and save the money. Especially since it loads the site into a tiny window that is amazingly difficult to read. If you want all your earthquake info aggregated into one place, this app will do that, but you can get the exact same info from the various websites, for free.

Outstanding EQ-related app

The app is a wonder! In terms of graphics, information presented, and user-friendly flexibility, an unconditional FIVE STARS.
In clever, completely accessible ways, the app goes far beyond mere info lists: it is an indispensable tool for those who want or need to know the latest on world seismicity. Its personalization options bring all the rich, up-to-the-minute data home to the user. And it's an app for the world, not just the USA or a single region, using the now-familiar Google interface and techniques.
To the developer: many thanks for your innovations, insights, and creativity!

Rated 5* before the update

This app is awesome! It you are interested in earthquakes this will give you all the info you want and more.
And the new map is so great. Just tap the map to zoom in. This app deserves more than a five rating.
The update now shows quakes under 2.5 which makes the list a lot longer so if any improvement is needed it would be the option to turn off the under 2.5
Best app for the money

Love this app!

First review for me, I just had to let others looking at getting this app know that it is really great. Clean, and easy to use and the update made it even better. Worth every cent. I use this app several times daily. Perhaps a link section to see fault lines, and other earthquake maps, like IRIS Seismic Monitor can be added in the future. Still, I'm really happy to have gotten this app.

Felt a quake within 15 minutes of buying this app!

It's true! I was lying in bed reading after spending a few minutes playing with this app. Heard the building creak and felt a faint shaking. Said to my wife "that was an earthquake!". She didm't believe me, but a few minutes later this app displayed a 3.2 19 miles away. What are the odds? Too cool. Five stars.

Terrific app for keeping tabs on earthquake activity

The developer of QuakeWatch has put together a terrific app that pulls in all the features needed, and then some, for keeping up with earthquakes around the world. Filters for distance, strength and location enable the users to select just the data desired. The GUI is outstanding! It is simple to use; the features are available with one click access; maps are clear and zoom capable; the extensive data set from US Geological Survey site is organized into a meaningful and manageable format. I am an earth science teacher and have found this app very functional as well as fun. It has brought to my finger tips a wealth of earthquake information for presenting virtually live info on earthquakes events anywhere in the world. The students love learning about the earthquake nearest our location as well as discovering the the most recent and strongest quake.

I was quite impressed

I was sitting here at my PC IM'ing a buddy when he aske dif I felt the quake we just had. I didn't feel it but the first thing I thought of was let me look for an app for quake watching sicne I live in California (Bay Area) anyways.
By the time I downloaded this app there it was. 2.8 quake in Santa Rosa completes with all the typical USGS maps etc.
This is going to be a very handy app and like others have said it's VERY FAST!

Great Update

When Mr. Worley said what he wanted to do with this update, I was skeptical. But, he did it. I use an iPod Touch and I did not want the app to bother me with location request on each launch - Done. Mr. Worley added a vastly improved map interface. Living on the "Ring on Fire", I like to see what is happening every day - QuakeWatch does the job. It is accurate, timely and informative. A well done 5 Stars.

fun to keep track

With this App you are able to track Earth quakes by the location and size, also the very latest. Each quake has lots of information pertaining to each earthquake tracked worldwide by the U.S. Geological Survey Earthquake Hazards Program...such as time, depth in the crust, latitude and longitude. Now with the 2.0 update this App is even cooler with google maps pin drop. Also comes with other features. It is worth the 99¢ and so much fun.

Excellent and useful

This is a great app. It's a very handy way to access the USGS earthquake information from your phone. Actually, I think it's easier to use the app than it is to check the actual USGS web page. I contacted the developer with feedback and suggestions, and heard back from him very quickly. It sounds like he is planning on making some excellent changes and additions to the program that will only make it better. Highly recommended!
