Description

For the first time ever, you can experience Don Bluth’s classic arcade game Space Ace, the follow up to the revolutionary Dragon’s Lair, on your iPhone or iPod Touch!
In Space Ace you play the heroic Ace who must stop the evil Commander Borf from taking over the Earth! Borf plans to reduce all of humankind to infants and take over the planet. Only two people have the courage and strength to stop Borf and save Earth: the beautiful Kimberly and the heroic Ace. But as they approach Borf’s stronghold, Ace is hit by the Infanto Ray, changing him into a child, and Kimberly is kidnapped by the evil madman. Armed with only a laser gun, Ace must find and destroy the Infanto Ray, rescue Kimberly and save the Earth.
The fate of Earth is in your hands!
This release of Don Bluth’s legendary animated arcade game features video transferred directly from the stunning high definition master, delivering the sharpest images and most vibrant colors ever – far better than the original laserdisc release.
Simply press on the direction pad to guide Ace in the right direction or fire your laser gun and blast those aliens away.
Don Bluth and his production teams are the creative genius behind such beloved classics as The Secret of NIMH, An American Tail and Anastasia to name but a few.
Dragon’s Lair LLC and Digital Leisure look forward to bringing many of the classic arcade games you’ve come to enjoy to the palm of your hands. Use your iPhone or iPod Touch to visit our website at www.digitalleisure.com/iphone for exciting updates and exclusive upcoming releases.

Love it!

Bought both Dragons Lairs and Space Ace quite a while back and love them all. Wondering if these will be updated to support the up and coming 64bit iOS.

Ruined a classic with cheating and bad controls

I love all the accomplishments you supposedly can get. Yet you CANNOT beat the game without energizing in this version and many times it says you hit buttons you did not or misses when you press them. Also the "get turned into a baby" accomplishment is also flawed. If you beat this game, it is due to perseverance - I guess if his is ever $.99 buy it, sadly I paid full price and think they owe me a refund.

Update Update Update Please.

The game's visuals are amazing. And if you have the Move Guide, you'll beat this game easy. But I know that there is more than one way to beat it. But none of the other ways work. It keeps glitching. The controls don't respond sometimes. If they would update the game there should be none of these problems. I want to love this game, but I can't with these game ruining issues.

WARNING to Consumers

This game will be most likely be replaced with a new version. You will probably have to buy it again for $4.99. The developer has done this with Dragons Lair 1 and 2. Buyer beware. The one star rating is an evaluation of company trust and willingness to listen to consumer concerns to fix game issues.

Awesome with some small glitches!

I loved this game when it originally came out and beat both it and Dragon's Lair. I cant believe this is an iPhone app, but very glad it is!!! It has become my favorite game all over again. My only minor complaint is that when playing the Captain level or above the movement is wrong, the screen will blink right and it only accepts it if you move left , the correct movement is not corresponding to the opposite screens. Hopefully there will be a fix for this in the near future , otherwise its flawless!! Thank you Don Bluth!
Update 5/13/15
As stated by others for sometime now, we are still having issues with these games. The final scene against Borf is completely bugged and unplayable. From what I understand, Dragons Lair has the exact same problem.
I don't think the company checks these reviews because this has been ongoing for sometime. I would love to play these again but in its current state, that is simply not possible.
Update 7/17/15
For the love of Ace, somebody, anybody from this company, please fix this game.....still waiting... It should not take months to get this app working properly again.

Major Glitch with iOS 8

I love this game and grew up with it as a kid. I would honestly give it five stars except I just got the new iPhone six and ever since I got it none of the games made by digital leisure are functioning properly. On this particular game the very last level goes haywire and it starts playing on its own and then you die from a completely different scene. I've uninstalled it and installed it over five times with the same glitch. Dragon's layer has the exact same problem if you go into the menu the screen goes black and the game won't play at all. I'm hoping this will be fixed soon as it's been messed up since the release of the new iPhones! Please fix this soon!!!

Missing levels

This is a great game BUT it's missing a few levels. For example, Dexter is still on the space station, going through what appears to be a junk level. Then he leaves the space station and is pursued by space fighters. Then he goes through a checker board tunnel being shot at by flying robots. Please fix this. Other than that, awesome game.

I've enjoyed this game through many versions. It has been a faithful reproduction of the arcade classic, including its problems and shortcomings.

Last level off sync

I'm glad that they fixed the game to work on iOS 7. It looks great. However, the last level on the Ace level is completely off-sync so the inputs are not matching with the flashes. In addition, some scenes are not playing on that level either. Minor problems but I'd like to see them fixed.

Good update, works great on iPhone 5 now. Could the app's icon be fixed? It still looks fuzzy and not high def. Also there are a few scenes missing, one I can think of is the fail scene with Kim and Ace being attacked by the squids.

I spent hours in the arcade

This game, by far, was one of the most creative ideas in 1983. Dragon's Lair came before Space Ace, but the idea of playing a cartoon for a 13 y/o in 1983 was an out of body experience. Today I have the game on my IPhone to relive all those memories from the arcade. Thanks to Dragon's Lair, LLC for bringing this classic back!! I will look forward to other releases from other popular laserdisc games also in the immediate future. Keep doing the excellent work that you do.

GREAT, but needs tuning, for one, its missing the movie option, and it cuts out Kimberly and dexters conversation on the way to the maze in captain and Ace mode, and I think it shows ace and kimmy dying when you choose the right path near the end of the game, fix these, and its an easy 5 for me :).

NEEDS UPDATES!

Huge fan of the original laser disk games, but this one needs updates. Please add the ability to watch the movie after you beat the game, and the button flashes to Captain and Space Ace levels so children can play it!
I also agree with the reviewer about Dexter and Kimberly's "I've been kidnapped by aliens..." conversation, please put it back in on the Captain and Space Ace levels.

Great video game

If you are like me, you go to the most critical reviews first to see what the game is really like. So, here is the deal...IT'S GREAT!!! Here are the only three critiques I have, and they are minor at that:
First, Kimmy and Dexters exchange before the second scene -- i.e. "Kimberly, come in. Are you okay? Oh sure, I've just been kidnapped by aliens, that's all." -- is missing from the Captain and Space Ace levels. Please add it.
Second, the third scene on the Captains level, I.e., the space station, the movements don't match the video. That is, you must go right even though the cartoon shows the passage is left.
Finally, in the Borf control, you can tell that scenes were omitted or, in some instance, thrown together in a hodge-lodge fashion. For example, the scenes where Borf fires the cannon at Dexter were almost completely omitted, and the scene before the final battle shows Dexter and Kimmy dying before they magically appear on the final platform.
Boiled to its essence, all but the rabid Space Ace fans will notice these minor imperfections. Everyone else will love it!

Cool blast from the past

I wasn't even a newborn when this game originally released but I remember seeing it as a kid during the late '80s/early '90s in arcades but never played it. It's crazy how a couple decades later, you can play what used to be in a large cabinet right in your hands...on a phone no less! Needless to say this game is classic and fun - a different type of fun, mind you. It's about twitch gameplay pre-CoD and quick reaction time. Although you'll die a lot on the normal and hard difficulties, Space Ace can be beaten on easy mode in about 5-7 minutes so it's brief. I wish there was a "movie" mode where you could just watch the movie; that'd be cool.

Just like the arcade version in the 80s

Awesome game! Brings back memories of the arcades. Plays just like the original. The ones who have given bad reviews must have never played the original arcade game back in the day. If you are too young to know Space Ace before you buy it, then you're probably not going to like it. For the rest, it's cheaper than the jars of quarters spent years ago trying to finish the game.

AWESOME and Great Controls !!!

Well, I have to copy/paste my Dragon's Lair review into this one, because they are both as good. "Don't know why anyone is complaining about the controls. They are dead on. This game is all about instinct and memorization. You can't wait for the screen to flash to input the command, you have to do it at the same time or before. Just memorize the path through trial and error. Also, I prefer the large controls option though.
The graphics are excellent and the game's reaction to correct or missed inputs is surprisingly great. I remember that was a big problem in other incarnations that would deliver slowdown, but not here. This one is even better than it's Bluray counterpart, which I also have.
I recommend this game to anyone. I have already beaten this (iPhone and Bluray) Dragon's Lair (iPhone and Bluray) and Dragon's Lair 2: Time Warp (Bluray) numerous times each and have come to a point where I can do it without dying, not even once.
I still can't believe that I have this game on my iPhone. I've loved it since I saw Dragon's Lair and this when I was a little kid in 1984 and was blown away thinking how amazing it was to see a cartoon which I could control.
The story and animation have stood the test of time and they are as great as ever. I can never get tired of this game.
Now, where is my portable Dragon's Lair 2: Time Warp???"

Fantastic reliving of the original with one caveat.

Space Ace is a wonderful throwback to the Laserdisc original game from the 80s and in that sense it's absolutely fantastic. It continues to be beautiful and highly entertaining. The dynamic is as simple as the original: You watch a clip of film which provides a visual clue and you interact to continue to the next clip or fail and see an alternative clip. For those who are not familiar with this kind of "game", it's more like a highly enjoyable and beautifully animated, interactive movie.
The one caveat is that unlike the original, you have to actually look at the controls in order to use them, as they are not physical controllers but virtual. This does not necessarily detract much from one's enjoyment and actually makes it a bit easier to get through some of those tough parts (at times too easy), particularly those I had more trouble with in the original, but it does keep you from being fully engrossed in the wonderful artwork and animation of the movie itself as your attention is elsewhere.
Still, it continues to be a beautiful and highly enjoyable experience. Enjoy!!!

Exellecent conversion of the arcade version

Space Ace is a arcade classic. I was a master of dragons lair and space ace back in the day and spent many hours in the arcades. This version is top notch in quality and recommend this product. A suggestion to those of you thinking the game is too short or not watching the video and enjoying don bluths masterpiece, play on ace mode. No rush to the end, try to figure out the moves like we did back in the day. A better gaming experience.
Update: ios4.2 works flawless. Unlike dragons lair, this works.
Can we also get a retina friendly icon? The icon is quite blurry on iPhone 4s.

Not Bad, a Little Expen$ive

There are 3 levels of difficulty with corresponding game lengths. The hardest, Ace, is the longest and has all the screens of play. The easiest, Cadet, takes about 20 minutes to figure out, but the others take more time and are more involved. I give it 3 stars as it is a bit pricey for a game this old and compared to other $3 apps. It is fun and the only real issue is that it does not play through the story once you win. It's a bit anticlimactic since the art and design of the story are its' strongest attribute (drawn by hand, before modern computer graphic software). I've had no operating issues with it. I hope the other company gets their act together soon and updates Dragons Lair to work on the latest iP 4s. Merry Christmas 2010

Digital Leisure rules

To sologigolos below: the roller skating section is in there. I've played through it many times. It's all in there it just depends on if you're playing cadet captain or ace.
To dirkthebroken below: EA made the dragon's lair port not these guys so go tell EA like the rest of us have and watch your pleadings fall on deaf ears. When iOS 4.0 came out it killed Dragons Lair and EAs subsequent "FIX" killed it even more. This was months ago. EA doesn't care. Dragon's Lair LLC on the other hand, were and continue to be on top of things and have kept Space Ace going strong. Kudos to Dragon's Lair LLC.
One of the best ports of this game ever except maybe for the Daphne emulator. Now, where the heck is Dragon's Lair 2? Add that and you have a confirmed instant buy from me.

Looks Great

This game is fantastic to look at and play. The only thing is, you can beat this game in under 20 minutes (Seriously). I read another guys post who gave it 1 star and he said the same thing. I thought he was exagerating. Don't get me wrong, the graphics, video, and quality of the port to the iPod/iPhone are 5 stars worthy. The $5 for 20 minutes is sort of steep. I was thinking around $3.
Overall, the game is a great import from the classic arcade game that I blew tons of money on. Just like everyone else, I eagerly await the Dragons Lair games too! Those games were iconic back in the day and they were never really well adapted to the console platforms. For some reason, it works great on the iPod/iPhone. Its a good buy overall just too short.

Happy camper

I thought both this and Dragon's Lair were off the chain. Ever since I was a kid I've wanted to play those games and when heard it was on the IPhone I just could not wait, DL was very cheap and I was fine with paying 5 buck for Space Ace think about much you used to pay in quarters. Long time ago I played the weird Snes version so I was very happy to realize it was just like DL but much more hectic. I did have one issue with one of the reverse stages that had the capture cylinders with going left to go right, it was only on Captain mode though, other then that perfect.

Almost exactly like the original

I actually got to rent a machine for my birthday when I was a kid. (yep,I was spoiled rotten). The memories came flooding back when I bought this for my iPod touch. A few things. A lit of the original games timing issues are still there and the arcade version had the same levels (cadet, captain, ace). This version replicates the experience exactly minus the physical joystick & button. The patterns &quirkey timings are all there. Thank you for making a great port of an arcade classic.

Couldn't afford to play this game during the day....

Now I can! Judging from the amount of time I died, I could have bought a car or something back in the day if I spent it on this game.
This game brings back memories. This is the best LD type game in its era. More fast-paced than Dragon's Lair and Kimberly is hotter than the vapid Daphne. I personally think the animation is better as well.
This should be getting 4 1/2 stars as I've encountered one glaring bug. On the 'flipped' levels, I've noticed that the input doesn't adjust correctly (e.g. the visual shows that you need to go right but you have to push left to pass). This happens RARELY though, but it is very annoying.
All-in-all, I'm pleased by the animation quality as well as nostalgic factor.

A great game but needs some comments

I loved this game a whole lot and it's nice to finally get to play it. I just have two small nit picks. There's no music in the menu screen unlike Dragon's Lair and this feels more like a mistake than intentional, please put music in it. Second, button prompts are only avalible in Cadet mode, making captain and ace mode unwinable, please at least consider putting in prompts in captain mode or at least make it an option like in Dragon's lair so I can learn the sequences faster.
Maniac536

Memories

I remember playing this in the arcade for the first time along with Dragon's Lair, Cobra Command and Cliff Hanger. While even Ace mode is no problem, I still enjoy this game very much. The only thing that could be improved is that the animation sequence that you see after the first level (There's Borf's ship) should be in all modes instead of just Cadet mode. What I am talking about is where Kimberly yells at Dexter, "Get me outta here!!!!!" Awesome game.

Space Ace

Although I didn't play this game in the arcade when I was younger, it really shines on the iPod Touch/iPhone! It is a bit buggy (I experienced some lockups which required me to reset my iPod Touch), but it works well enough. Setting the controls to large helps, as I was able to finish the game within an hour after I downloaded it. Try playing it on the higher difficulty settings for a real challenge! It can better if a bug patch get released. I'm waiting on Dragon's Lair! An excellent game despite a few minor bugs.

A good start, needs more content

I recall playing this game in the arcades when I was a kid, and this game brings back those feelings perfectly!
It's not perfect, though: It's still missing some of the original content (dialogue cutscene between Chapters 1 and 2, roller skate maze between Chapters 8 and 9). There's still a glitch in Chapter 4 (Dogs and Lasers) that prevents you from playing the Ace branch of the chapter. Hopefully, future updates will address both of these issues.
Overall, a solid start, and worth the price, as long as the developer can resolve these two minor problems.

Great memories.. But...

I love playing this game. I remember playing hours and hours and hours.. at the arcade. I was the first to beat the game (and Dragon's Lair) in my local arcade. I noticed a bug though. When in the middle of a game (well almost right at the end) my phone rang and it kicked me out so I could take a call. When done with the call, the game loaded up automatically but the game state was reset so I now have to start over. When exiting the game in my own, I can always get back to where I left off. Pleas fix this.
Other than the bug, it is a great game an is worth the money to be able to take a tripdown memory lane!

The original

It's the original game straight down to it's flaws. Hard to improve upon an interactive movie style game that was made over two decades ago but one place to start would be an option to see the blue guy give a taunt after you die only once per scene rather than everytime. Also I noticed that a short nonplayable scene when you first enter the spacehip is only shown on the cadet difficulty. Is this intentional?
Edit: after playing some more I've downgraded a star. In particular the game seems to be bugged in terms of continuity. For example beating the section where you dodge enclosures from the ceiling then for no explicable reason doing it over again but reversed. Additionally, when you are supposed to press a button often comes before the hint forcing you to memorize everything. Actually the hints are so vague and the timing slots so inconsistent you have to memorize everything on cadet mode first, which tells you the answers as you play.
Found another bug when resuming the game it was giving me hints like I was in cadet mode but when the game ended my high score was for ace mode. I don't remember which one I originally picked.
Can't really recommend to a lot of people. The game moves so fast I don't really have time to comprehend what is going on.

Ah the good ol days

This game is a dirrect port from the original game. Nothing has been changed, or left out. I probably spent enough on this game, I could have bought the Iphone, that I'm using to write this review. I've read a few reviews, where people complain that this game is too short. Simple solution, turn off the unlimited lives. This is a true clasic, and was a revolutionary game, In it's day. Now, bring on Dragon's Lair.

A faithful port

This is a wonderful, faithful port of the original arcade classic. That said, the problems with the original remain. There's little flashing hints on-screen but it's inconsistent when you are supposed to press a button. Sometimes you have to press it right as you see the flashing hint, which is how it should be, but other times you have to press it before or after, and if you don't time it right it's a quick death. Easily frustrating.
But bring it on! I like the game nonetheless and look forward to dragons lair!

Not so Retro-Retro Review

Usually, I don't take the time to review Apps, but I felt this one deserved credit where credit was due.
Still here? Killer.
So for what I came to learn was a game for the original Attari, I'm gonna have to say, old or not. This game throws down hard.
It has stunning visuals, is challenging, multiple levels of difficulty, infinite life option for those not going for a score and just wanting to make it to the end in one piece, the orriginal commercial ad, and ds I have seen of yet, not buggy, laggy, or a battery killer.
This game is more or less a reflex and timing based game where you're able to choose what happens through the actions you choose on the fly. Though the majority is linear, being a fast pace race for survival, there are hidden scenes and different ways to go, so replay value is there.
Of all the games I've downloaded, this one has given me the most bang for my buck.
If you're looking for a fun, challenging retro kickback, or wanting to pay homage to you're childhood (for the older generation) of blowing quarters at a local arcade, look no further.

Memories

I had to comment. This brings back so much memories. From spending time in the arcade and dropping quarter upon quarter to memorize and beat this game. Don Bluth had an other winner in "Dragon's Lair.", which I'm sure you're getting alot of request for. So, please count my vote in for it. Space Ace was the stuff. Great animation, good storyline, easy to learn, but hard to master game control and play. I was there for hours. I love it, now that I have it and can play at my leisure. Thank Don Bluth and the App Store. Bring on Dirk, the Dragon has the Princess and we need to help him save her.

Perfect!! Can't wait for Dragon's Lair

First let me say that I've played this game in it's arcade form and many of the home versions. This is by far the best version I've seen. Those who are complaining about how short or easy it is need to remeber most of the other versions only gave you fague hints about what button to push instead of the glowing buttons in this version. Also you only had 3 lives in the arcade so if you're playing with infinite lives obviously it's easier to complete. Thank you so much for keeping these laser games alive!!

So glad to see this

What a great port of the arcade. Anyone who has enjoyed this as a kid will get a kick out of this. Like someone else mentioned though, why is the cutscene with "get me out of here" missing from the other two difficulty levels? Why the heck would you remove that from the versions that are the most like arcade play? This makes me wonder if anything else was omitted. Other than this very odd detail it's great to see this on the iPhone. Digital leisure please pay more attention to the small details, these games are quite important to many of us nostalgics, and the lack of original content, or inconsistancy is upsetting.

Space Ace on an iPod Touch? Awesome!

The video is 100% flawless, as far as I can tell. I can't see any video artifacting at all, but at such a small screen size, who would notice. The game plays at the same speed as the arcade and the endless lives feature allowed me to finally get to the end (I played on Cadet). BUT... I spent so much time watching for the onscreen flashes and trying to keep up with them, I couldn't really appreciate the game, itself. In other words, the control scheme made playing the game more of a task of "speed Simon" than a game I could enjoy as I was playing it. It's still worth $5 easy... I just wish I could've enjoyed the game more while playing it. An iPod Touch collector's piece for sure!

Great Game!

I couldn't wait to get my hands on this game. Being a fan of Don Bluth's work and Dragon's Lair and Space Ace in particular, I was practically foaming at mouth when I saw this in the app store. And having played the game on medium and hard settings for the better part of three weeks I can honestly say that it was worth every penny. While not a game in the more traditional sense, it's a must-have for anyone who loves animation. That being said, the game is not without its problems. My biggest complaint is that for most of the game you have less than a second to respond, which means that success in the game depends more on trial-in-error than reacting to the environment. Also, when playing on hard difficulty, on some areas you must play through a mirror-image of the level you just finished. That's totally lame and breaks the continuity of the game. Hopefully, that will be fixed in an update. Can't wait for Dragon's Lair!

Definitely worth it for nastalgia's sake

Just downloaded this app and love it. Just like the original from way back! Actually, this version seems to look even better (clearer and more vibrant) than the original arcade version. I forgot how SHORT the game actually is though. :( I literally finished it on Cadet level in about 10 minutes. I'm sure it will take longer on the harder levels, but still, it was over way too quick. This game is awesome--can't wait for Dragon's Lair to come out now. I would have given 5 stars, but $5 is too much for such a short game. $2.99 would have been more appropriate. Still great though.

Rip off

I have loved Don Bluth's animation so I was eager to try this. But play through this I did. I sure am disappointed. First from start to finish this game lasts maybe 10 minutes. The idea is you have to press on-screen buttons to move the character up, down, left or right and energize. So basically all this game does for the whole 10 minutes is test if you can hit the right button at the right time. There are a couple problems with this. First, you can't at first actually pay attention to what's happening on the screen because instead you have to watch where you press the buttons. Unlike real ones you can't feel them to find where they are; you have to look for them. Second when the buttons are hit or when in the easy mode for hints they turn yellow. But in several scenes the color is also yellow making it hard to tell if the buttons are lit. Third, if you miss pressing a button you die and an animated movie appears indicating this. But this scene is repeated over and over until it really gets annoying. So I rate this thus: good animation, good sound, terrible controls, unbelievably short, no story, little or no replay value. Avoid this title.

Brings back fun memories

Fun app. Only dislike is game is too short and the timing is off when playing "Ace" skill level where the original flashes indicate where you're supposed to move next - you better be familiar enough with the moves in advance because sometimes waiting for the flash will be too late and you'll lose a life. Great game though. Hope Dragon's Lair comes out soon - I always liked that one better anyway.

A frantic and fun adventure

Is it dated? Yes. Are you really controlling the hero? No. Is it worth the money? Holy crap, yes! Full of adventure and incredibly fast-paced, and yes, still as frustrating as I remember. At least there's a dufficulty level with hints!
The animation is filled with detail, and I find the dialogue to be really campy--for example, I LOVE it when Space Ace says,"Oh, far out!" What kid didn't wish that, if given the chance, he could energize and turn into an action hero? It's awesome.

Laserdisk game in the palm of your hand!

If you ever loved Space Ace in the past this is a must buy! All the levels are here in the correct order and with the correct moves. Even the right "beep" sound is in there. Old school arcade fans will really love this game. It is a must own if you enjoyed the laser disk games from the 80's. Space Ace is the best out of all of them besides the classic Dragon's Lair. Don't wait any longer. Get it!

Unbelieveable!!!

Ok, shocked to see this as an app. And was worried about how bad it was going to be. Great job with the port!!! True to the arcade original on all skill levels. Yes I wasted thousands of quarters when this game was in the arcades, and loved it when you had a very large group of people standing just watching you play. The ones who say it is a stupid or bad game, that's ok, we old-school arcade gamers understand that you were just the jealous ones in the crowd because you couldn't do it yourself. For those that say there isn't enough control, true, but the game was never meant to be anything more than it is. You interact with the movie at key points to progress. You have to remember.. This game was a pioneer in the video game industry along with the dragon's lair series, they showed how video could be manipulated thru a users decisions. It paved the way! This game was out at a time when other arcade games were still using blocky sprites (q-Bert) as an example. If you can't appreciate how far ahead of it's time this game was, then those of us that do feel bad for you. Again, great port of the arcade, bring on dragon's lair and princess Daphne (move over princess toadstool.. Marios girl ain't got nothing on you!)

A careless port with no thought given to improvement or adaptation to the iPhone.

Space Ace was never a good game. It was merely a movie that you got to watch if you memorized a long series of patterns or had quick enough reflexes combined with a sense of what direction the game was trying to indicate for you to push the joystick. In this iPhone adaption the guessing of which direction to push is removed by having the joystick appear on the screen as buttons which flash to let you know to push them. This is not fun. This is not a game. It never really was. There's been no innovation done with the iphone version. They could have allowed you to touch the screen anywhere (i.e. touch the flashing objects indicating the direction of the joypad directly), but they really didn't think about it. They just ported it. And given this game is entirely on the hard drive of the iPhone, I question the loading times of each segment... It's a careless port with no thought given on how to improve or adapt it to the platform. A damned shame.

Just as I remember

I was fascinated by this game in the arcades back in the 80's, but gave up playing it because I would lose so fast and I had only so many quarters... now at last I can see how it ends.
Don't play the "Cadet" level, it gives all the moves away and yes can be beaten in 5 minutes. The Captain and Ace levels are truer to the arcade version with the flashing hints and "chime" when your move is accepted- spend the time to figure out the correct moves yourself and the game will provide hours of fun.
Just a couple of things:
- Are the "screen blanks" between scenes really necessary with this version? Or are they merely an effort to faithfully reproduce the arcade game that had to "pause" to find the right scene on the laserdisc? It would be nice to make them optional.
- A way to jump ahead of scenes you've already completed would be good.
All in all, thanks for a great trip back to my high school years. Bring on Dragon's Lair!

USE LARGE CONTROL SETTING.

As many users have said, the controls are nearly impossible to use. I read similar comments in the reviews before I purchased it thinking that I would have a different experience. Nope!! I can't even successfully make the second move of the game.
But after witing a review, I read more reviews. One person suggested using large control settings. It basically puts the directional arrows on the edges of the screen. This makes it much easier to play the game. I'm giving it 4 stars now (since it's still not perfect). :)

Get this game now if you ever played the original Space Ace!!!

The original Space Ace was released in 1984, back in the days when a roll of quarters would last all Saturday in the mall arcade.
Don't you remember riding your bike to the mall just to hang out in the arcade?
If you ever played this game before, it is the exact same game which can be played on your iphone or ipod touch.
I can't wait for Dragon's Lair
Thank you Don Bluth! (ex-Disney animator)

Awesome

Game play is good, controls are OK, button could be a bit larger, scenes I remember breezing thru in arcade are wasting me, graphics are very good, looks exactly like I remember the original arcade game. I have been playing for approx 20 minutes and no glitches/crashes etc.
I had played this game many times, never had the chance to beat it back in the day of arcades and roller rinks, but now...muhahahahah. Now if I could only find my Iron Maiden t-shirt and my denim jacket with rock band badges, my day would be complete. :)
Bring on Dragon's Lair please.

What a blast from the past

As soon as I saw this as an available download I jumped on it immediately without reading a single review. I wasn't disappointed, but there are clearly some fixes that need to be addressed to warrant 5 stars. For one the control buttons are placed in a way that makes it not only difficult to press correctly, but worse, causes you to situate your fingers over much of the screen taking away some of the viewing pleasure, as the graphics are in themselves off the hook and the transfer from laser disk is by far almost perfectly ported to the Iphone. Change the position of the controls so that they are all centrally located, say across the top of the screen, then I would give it 5 thumbs up. All in all this is one of my all time favorite games and hope to see Dragon's Lair offered here too in the near future. Thanks for the memories.!!!

Looks and plays just like the arcade. Please make the "move beeps" louder or adjustable in volume.

This is one of my all time favorite games in the arcade, as well as Dragon's Lair 1 & 2. Very happy to have this on my iPhone and it looks and plays just like the original. My only concerns are the movement beeps and vibration. I can't hear the beeps for my movement and button actions, so I'm not sure if what I'm pressing gets registered or not. The vibration kind of works but I can't tell if it's accurate or not. I like how the the arcade version had loud beeps when moving or pressing a button correctly. You knew right away if your timing was right. I hope you can add that to an update or maybe make it adjustable in volume. Other than that, I really enjoy this app. Thanks for bringing it to the app store.

Retrocade

This game is totally awesome. It's challenging and yet it can be tweaked to be simple enough for my eight year step son to play. Can't wait for Dragon's Lair!!! I gave it four stars because I have only one complaint. I have am IPod Touch 1st generation with toggle switch for volume control. Since the game itself has no settings for volume, it's about loud enough to make you go deaf when you're wearing headphones. I would love the ability to be able to adjust in a future release!!!

Awesome classic laser disc game from the 80's!

This game works & plays better than I had expected on the iphone. I had not seen or played this game in years and it brought me right back to my 80's arcade game playing youth. I used to have fun watching other (older more skilled) kids at the time play this game, just so I could watch all the awesome animated sequences. The laser disc game genre is definitely among my favorites for classic arcade games. Hopefully Bluth & Digital Leisure Inc. will port over Dragon's Lair I & II. I'd love to play those games again as well. Too awesome!

This app is fantastic; an absolute *must have*!!!

(insert raving review here) Now, just download the app; serious, it's that good! This is a *perfect* translation from the original arcade version, and in HD. The colors are brilliant; the quality is top notch. Don Bluth, personally, thank you thank you THANK YOU for taking the time and trouble to get this app onto the iPhone. I can-not-wait for Dragon's Lair, Dragon's Lair 2: Time Warp, and any other games you wish to release. Cheers, cheers, and cheers!!!

Great app, just one PROBLEM...

When you're playing the game and press the home button to exit, it automatically saves your progress so that the next time you play you can pick up right where you left off. The PROBLEM is that it DOESN'T SAVE YOUR DIFFICULTY SETTINGS. It puts you back at the same level, but at the easy or "caddet" difficulty setting, which basically tells you every move to make, taking all the fun out of it. I would've given this game five stars, which is what it deserves, but didn't because the developers NEED TO FIX THIS. Please come out with an update solving this problem, or I'll be using this app a whole lot less.

Absolutely Freak'n Awesome! 8-)

I have always been fascinated by Dragon's Lair I & II and Space Ace. The first time I saw them in the arcades, I was in awe and shock at how cool it was to see an interactive cartoon!! Back in the 80's, there was simply nothing else like them and the same applies today! Plus, Don Bluth is a cartoon genius and his style in animation is highly recognizable and unique. Watch any of his movies and you'll see what I'm talking about. Any game that Digital Leisure ports to the iPod is a sure bet and the quality is bound to be top notch!! The graphics are as sweet as ever and the sound is just as great!! I highly recommend this and it's worth the price, especially if you're new to these old-school laserdisk games! Trust me, this ain't no Pacman... ;) I can't wait to download the rest!! Thanks Digital Leisure!! I'm take'n Ace to the beach!! 8-p

A fantastic port of a classic game

If you're even remotely interested in old laserdisc games, or you never had the chance to check one out, this is more than worth the 5 dollar asking price. The visuals are transferred nicely from the recent HD version of the game, and the touch screen controls are responsive and don't get in the way of the action. I couldn't ask for more!

All Aces...get it, Aces? Uhhh.....

Never has there been such a perfect fit between a game and a platform. It's all there, flawlessly translated and looking GREAT. The picture quality is absolutely stunning and the gameplay is 100% intact - it even features the original "attract" animation. In fact, it's better than the original since it now featues a "hint system" in cadet mode, the option for unlimited lives, and it finally eliminates the disc reading delays that have hindered every version of this game - including the original.
This is something I've been dreaming of since I was 12: the once "state of the art" game....on a handheld. This is indeed the future.
This is the way you kick things off. Now, bring on Dragon's Lair!

Simply Awesome!

It always amazes me how Digital Leisure can release this game over and over. I think this game has been released on every system since the Amiga back in 1984 and they never fail to satisfy. This version of the game for the itouch and iphone looks , sounds and plays amazing. There is an even an easy mode, which displays all the moves on the screen. Again, props to Digital Leisure. You guys are awesome. Can't wait for Dragon's Lair and Dragon's Lair 2.

A childhood dream come true

When I was a kid I dreamed of this moment. I used to play dragon's lair and ask my dad if he thought it was ever possible they'd make the game for our atari etc. He explained why it would never be possible because of the laserdisc technology that these extra big cabinets relied on to function.
I thought of him 10 years ago when I played the 3DO version, and I think of him today when I play this perfect rendition of Space Ace, recreated in the palm of my hand.
Thanks guys, for bringing this one home.

A great classic title, but costs way too much

I remember dropping quarters down the arcade machine's slot for this title back in my early childhood days. I remember being so frustrated that i could never finish the game, but begged me to come back for more. I bought this title just so that I could see the end, but I never expected the game to finish so soon. *PLEASE NOTE* You can complete this game in about 5 minutes (no kidding!). $6 for this app is ridiculous. Try $2.99 tops. This game doesn't have much replay value after you've beaten it, so YOU do the math. Thank you though to the developers for releasing this title.
