What the heck happened?
The new version is horrible. Very laggy and slow, takes forever to play a game. CPU moves are choppy and slow. Such disappointment. I played the old version thousands of times, but now I'm considering deleting the game.

Excellent Strategy Game
You are probably looking at this app because you want a game of strategy similar to Stratego. There exist dozens of variations of the same concept all over the world and over the Internet. The General by Sean O'Connor is one of the best I've ever encountered in the form of a computer game. I've noticed it is very polished and works without slowdown or glitches. This app has so many useful options that contribute to enjoyable play.
You get 6 different AI engines from what it seems. Maybe it's just one engine but has 6 difficulties. You get a number of themes for the pieces. You also get a very good selection of predetermined arrangements to play as. You can also horizontally reverse each.
Overall I've found no issues with this app whatsoever. It should provide lots of enjoyment to any fan of turn based strategy games and board games.

Incredibly Slow
As other reviews mention, latest updates made gameplay incredibly slow. Game is basically unplayable now. Fix, or I will delete.

Bad update
After update it is starting up correctly but is very very slow. On a iPad 2. Please roll it back to the reversion. The last update ruined my favorite game. Please roll it back. It is way to slow now and it's smaller graphics.

Needs a fix, quick!
Played the gave every day, until the 2.0 upgrade!😩
First time playing after the 2.0, the game would not start correctly, both on the iPad and iPhone. Had to delete and re-install.
Then quickly discovered that the game pieces move Extremely S L O W!
In addition, the opponent makes moves that are not too smart such as chasing the #1 piece with the Spy and allowing the #1 to take out the Spy. Or striking a game piece that has not been identified yet with their #3'and landing on a bomb!
Thought that ap upgrades were to make it better, not worse!
The game needs a fix right away!

Do not buy! Until they fix the Bad update to a good game.
The game was great. I played it every day for 2 years. Now with the latest update, the game is horrible. Slow and buggy and no longer fun to play. I quit, until it is fixed.

Bad update, good game
Regarding most-recent update: why is the game so slow now? The new animations are not an improvement. Everything worked much more smoothly in the prior versions.
Regarding the game generally, here is my initial review: I had this game on my old Windows Mobile phone years ago and loved it -- by far the game I played the most on that phone. I was hoping someone would port a Stratego clone to the iPhone (and now the iPad) and, sure enough, here it is. Woo-hoo!!!
This game is perfect for people who love strategy turn-based war games. It can be played in about 5 minutes, which is ideal for a phone game. The goal is to capture the enemy's flag before it captures yours. The trick is that you can't see what any of the enemy's pieces are: the piece you're about to engage could be the general (#1) or a lowly scout (#9). Lower numbers defeat higher numbers, so surprise is a key element in the game. The AI here is pretty good: challenging, but not enough to frustrate you to the point where you don't want to play anymore. It's fun to come up with different placement strategies (the game comes with about 20-30 different pre-set placements to choose from, but it's more fun to devise them on your own).

Update ruins the game
What happened? This update is horrible. Game pieces move so slowly now, and the screen size is too small now. It used to be so snappy. Now it's like playing in molasses.
I used to play this game all the time until this update.

Not working right
Intermittently does not give you an opponent. - I removed the game and reinstalled. Seems to work again.

I too used this app for many years and have been a fan so Sean since early 2000 when Slay came out. This version needs to be rolled back ASAP. Opponent pieces don't appear except for the 1. Also went to the forums and they appear dead no updates on there either since several years ago.

No longer playable with 2.0
I've had this app for a long time, but an upgrade caused too many bugs that it is no longer playable! Game starts with the AI only having the general... Surrender a few times and they get a full board, which is just a mirrored image of your own pieces. How much fun is this?

Unfortunately, this upgraded version has many bugs that need to be fixed. Crashes on the first few moves. I've had this app for a long time and this is the first to go completely backwards. Disappointed.... Please upgrade your upgrade.

Messed Up
This used to be great. Now it's slow even when the opponent actually has pieces deployed, which is not often. I am amazed that this is so bad now.

Bugs since update
All of a sudden the game is very slow. .very slow. .also there are time when you hit start and no opponent shows up. As for higher AI i have not seen an improvement same tricks that worked in the olde version still fool the game.

Update a step backward
The latest update makes gameplay slower and less enjoyable. I liked to play quick games before but the movement of game pieces takes away from that. Not my go to game anymore......

Almost perfect
Local 1v1 is absolutely necessary. It gets a 4 instead of 5 for that reason alone. Please add it asap. No one would complain if you added online pvp but its not necessary. Stats would be a welcome addition as well. Also huge flaw... The enemy 1 piece doesnt attack unless it knows the other piece its attacking before it attacks. The enemy ran out of all pieces except its 1 and it refused to attack me Even though my flag was exposed. It decided to stalemate instead of taking a chance on a guess. The rest is perfect

I never lose. Game level is set too low. It would be nice to be able to change the levels. And yes, the price is way to high!

Good game. Price point a bit high.
I think this is a good port of stratego. Only complaint is the price.
There are some features I'd like:
Stats - wins/loses
Game Center - could have which setups you've won with.
Versus another player - could black out screen after you've moved and click a button to reveal for 2nd player.
Spotter option- newest Stratego has spotter as lowest spot. May want to think of adding that.

Almost great
This version of the original board game is good but has a few kinks. The AI is a bit questionable, goofy move choice and it has perfect piece memory unlike humans. No multiplayer is borderline inexcusable, but part of the deal. Completely 100% worth the cost of the app. Also I can't seem to find a way to save my sets for use at a later date.

Great App, but . . .
I love the game and play it all the time. I love how the app is like the real game, and not a stupid spinoff version. However, it could be made even better if you added a multiplayer mode. Great game, though.

Great game However a 2player option would be nice or at least wifi with a random opponent. Also a more challenging play (difficulty settings perhaps), after all, there are many free apps with more freedom in play than that of this one. Also, it would be nice to save favorite set-ups

Very pretty, but the screen locks and causes bad moves, the computer player knows where all of the pieces are including the flag and cheats accordingly

computer has several advantages
The player cannot repeat a move 3 times, yet the computer is allowed to repeat its moves. Computer seems to know where the bombs are placed and will avoid hitting them. Please correct these issues.

Fun... Need a hard difficulty
This is fun and perfect size on the iPad. Lots of people complaining about the graphics but you can change the look of the pieces by clicking on the red castlelike icon.
I would like a scoreboard. Sometimes i wish there was an undo button but its stratego, you cant have an undo because the piece is revealed.
I would like a harder difficulty, though the computers have great strategies.

really fun game, I also play it for the computer, but on an Iphone or Itouch like I have the pecice are hard to move because they are so small. which is why this would be better for an Ipad but still buy it

The pieces do not respond to touch and thus will not move. Game is useless when you can't move the selected pieces.

I used to play this game all the time, but now there must be a bug, how in the hell can a 7 beat a 2? Until this is fixed this will stay 2 stars.

Been there, done that
Nice game, but after playing it about 5 or 6 times you realize that the computer uses the exact same starting positions for it's men every single game. Not knowing where each of his players are would make it much more enjoyable to play after the initial few times.

Needs multiplayer
What would make this game perfect would be pass-n-play multiplayer. It probably wouldn't even take too much extra coding to put in. I'd even buy it as an in-app purchase.

Just as good as the board game. I like how you can change the presentation of the pieces and turn certain rules on or off. Makes the wait for my turn at the barber's less painful!

Great game but needs update
Hey this is a great game and is just like the board game but there are some problems I noticed. 1st If the enemy has one move left had the only thing he can do is the illegal 3 time move thing then the game freezes and all u an do is surrender also this game would be bettr If u had 2 players and the computer had difficulty settings.

Graet game, Real Board need improvment
This game is like the real board and very good and can spend a lot of time to play its a lot fun, BUT need this 3 improvements, 1. Save my own settings, 2. UNDO feature, 3. more the one Laval,
it dose not have the option the save YOUR OWN setting which I would like to see improvement, (it comes with like 10 or more pre-settings that you can change and it will remember it so I have a way it should remember my setting,) also its very important to have a UNDO button, its not I would like to cheat, sometimes you move a tiny square by mistake or the ipod or your finger moved the other square you have in mind.
and it would be nice to have 3-5 levels of difficulty so in Level one the CPU will act like a dummy and Level 3 or 5 the CPU should be very very strong.

I Love Seans games for the P.C. I have played all his games on my mobile phone. Now I ma enjoying them on my ipod. This is like playing Stratego and its loads of fun. I recommend it highly.

Finally a great stratego game!
It's about time someone got one of the greatest boar games of all time right. There are several other people who have made attempts to make stratego, but nothing compares to this version. I only wish that it has a landscape mode and multiplayer. This is a great buy and the computer is actually a bit of a challenge.

Great after update!
As promised, I've changed my review from 2 stars now that the recent update came out.
The game play is like the board game, and the author's Windows Mobile version an PC version.
The only thing still remaining is a control for speed of the pieces moving as in the other version.
Add that, and my 4 stars go to 5 stars!

It would be so easy to get 5 stars if you would update! Everything is perfect except that the pieces don't always respond to your finger tap. And I've never been able to rearrange my pieces at the beginning of a game...it simply won't respond to my finger taps!! Please update!!! Will change to 5 stars

Great for any stratego lover. Only thing is that you should be able to save your own setups. Other than that great gameplay and the a.i. doesnt cheat like everyone says it does

Great game
A couple suggestions: rather than this being a game of memory, after you see the piece, it's value is always displayed! The other is adding a record to keep track of wins and losses.

Awesome game!
This game is really good. I only gave it 4 instead of 5 because it has tons of potential, such as adding multiplayer and being able to save your own formations, as well as other options like spies can kill anyone, bombs go away after detonating, etc.
This really is a good game even without these additions, and Sean does a great job of upgrading his software. I know this from playing another of his great apps, Slay.

Great strategy fun
I play the board game several times a week and was dying for an app of this game, but if you are remotely smart, you will never lose to the computer's ai. I have only lost one game out of about 300+ played since i bought the app. Is great for the stratego fanatic, regardless..

Good game but...
I've been waiting forever for someone to make this game, I even thought about making one myself, this one is a good one, but it needs 2 player mode/multiplayer. It gets old playing the computer everytime! Please have an update where you can play online against human players and it's a 5 star game EASY!!!

A good, though basic, rendering of Stratego. But for the price, we should get much more, such as: (1) an undo or take back move option, (2) the ability to save a game in progress, (3) the ability to save our own opening positions.

After i play a few games i can't move the pieces around before playing. The red pieces. Must be a bug. To be able to do it again i quickly have to cycle thru a few games until i can move the pieces again.

Controls are hard at first, but once you get used to them, it's great!
This is a great Stratego game. The controls are hard to use when all the pieces are cramped together but you do tend to get used to it as the game progresses. Other than that, you can use preset layouts to play a game or make your own strategies! This game is awesome! (too bad it doesn't have 2 player, but oh well ;) )

Pay attention

I checked the app store every day since I got an iPhone for a stratego game. Thanks for finally making one. It would be nice to be able to be blue and move the pieces but it is not a deal breaker.
A two player update would be nice. Even if it was two player on the same device.
Would change to five stars if you could play two players over the net like adrenaline pool.

Fix the bug that doesn't allow you to switch pieces at start.
Just like the great game I remember except the glitch that doesn't let you move pieces at the beginning. If you can't fix that after buyers of your app have asked for it for months, then you need to drop your price or stop making apps or even better make an update that fixes the main beef everyone has with your app. Once that's fixed it's a 4 or 5 star app.

Fun to play but still lacking
The game is fun. On the setup it doesn't always let you move pieces. This is a bug that needs to be fixed. Also a way to play others would be very cool.

Not a bad game
This game is just like Stratego.
It would be nice if we could arrange our pieces the way we'd want but got to use the preset arrangement...

Excellent Stratego clone.
I have been waiting for a version of Stratego to be offered for as long as apps have been available for the Iphone. Stratego is one of my favorite board games and this version with it's rich graphics and great interface fully captures the look and feel of the original. Very well done and provides hours of enjoyment. Well worth the price.
