What people are saying:
The iPhone Mom:
"... I also teach preschool in my home. I know from personal experience that learning to write can be tedious for the little ones and I loved how iWriteWords takes that task and made it fun."
AppStruck:
"The whole app is delightful to behold. Bright background colors are juxtaposed against equally bright and scribbly child-like artwork that convey the word being spelled. You and your child will enjoy tracing your finger along those necessary building blocks of language. With its memorable artwork and way cool physics engine, it is sure to entertain and teach your child."
A Touch of Learning:
“Its got an intuitive interface for young children. It has high quality graphics and effects. I have no hesitation in recommending this app for children ready to start learning to write. To me, this is exactly the sort of app I am looking for in my quest to have apps that are fun, but teach my kids something really useful in the real world.”
---------------------------------------
How to play:
Help Mr. Crab collect the numbered balls by dragging him with your finger - and drawing the letter at the same time.
Once all the letters in the word are drawn properly, a cute drawing appears.
Slide the letters into the spinning hole and advance to the next level.

Glad to see the update

I have been waiting to buy this for 5 years. I use an app tracker to alert me when the price changes or the app is update. I was shocked when I saw this get updated after so many years. I can confirm this works great on iOS 10. Very bare bones writing app with letters and numbers, but it is great for my son who is struggling with his dexterity. He uses a stylus to practice his handwriting. Some updates to the graphics or different learning modes would be appreciated.

Helping my toddler write and spell words

I got the app to help my toddler with her writing skills. She is doing great. A few weeks later she was playing and just started to spell words out loud and after each word she would say, "that spells..."

Needs a little more.

My three year old loves this app! I bought him a stylus and he just goes to town. I'd love to see the option of creating your own words to write so he can write his name! Another little thing that would be neat would be having the letter sounds.

Great app buy let us choose letter

My kindergarten ESL kids are responding very well to this app. Their letter-sound awareness is improving. I just wish I could start session at a chosen letter instead of 'Aa' so I could have them take turns. Like this they never get to the second half of the alphabet as I am very limited on time. Great app though!

additional practice

an additional application that i would really like to have would be that a parent or teacher could add in the student's name into the tasks so that he or she will make the letters in his name the proper way. I am working with a student that knows how to write his name, but makes the letters incorrectly.

The apps is great with iOS 5.
If you have IOS 6, do mot buy this until they fix the bugs. I have the IPad 2 and running iOS 5, and it work fine, until I update to iOS 6, my child and I are very un happy with it now.

Such a good app for writing the alphabet

Why so few reviews? I think this is a very smart and fun way to learn how to write letters and numbers and do so in the correct direction. The interface visually shows the user how to write the letter. It guides the user throughout with the traditionally correct *order* of the strokes as well as the stroke *direction*. Perhaps it's my Japanese side that makes me a stickler when it comes to handwriting. IMHO, I think there IS a proper way to hand write letters! : )
In addition to its inherent charm (the illustrated words are just sublime--I am guessing the app designer found a precociously artistic child to create to drawings), the child narration is very sweet without being cloyingly so and the cheer is a lovely, rather musical touch. The sound effects are lively and fun (I find I do ask my children to turn it down though when the percussion seems too loud) and...and-And-AND: my two children (a boy and a girl) genuinely enjoyed playing it. Now that they are in the elementary grades, it seems to have run it's course. It was a delight when they were 3 and 4--and 5 too. I highly recommend it for these ages.
Also, I have to say, in the app world, I don't see a lot if soul out there. This app has some soul to it...in terms of the depth and quality of the artwork and the ingenuity and hard work that went into creating it. A cheer to the people who made this! Hurrah!

M

I just installed this app to help my 5&3yr olds practice writing. While it is a cute program with great features, I am highly disappointed that it is made for RIGHTHANDED children only!! All of my kids are left handed and the crab forces them to do strokes opposite to the stroke marks left handed people make when forming letters. I'm so disappointed that I wasted my money on a program that doesn't take that into account when trying to provide a valuable first writing experience for young children. I will think twice before buying another app from this provider.

Fun for a game

This app has beautiful colors that my two year old loves yet lacks the headline, midline, and baseline that another reviewer pointed out. My four year old has been playing the app 'Pre-K ABC HD' which has the lines and the color coded start from the top dots and arrows like he has in pre-k as well as a bright colored speller and flashcards. This is a great game app not a school readiness app like Pre-K ABC.

Could be better

This is a great app for early preschoolers. My son is 3 1/2 years old and he loves this app and it is soon easy for him. Great idea for learning. I wish it had ability to create the iwrite features for words entered by the user. That would be awesome for working with writing their name or letters they struggle with. At least it should have ability to go to any letter you want. That would be much better. As it is, kids can get a bit bored fast.

Just what I was hoping for.

I just got my IPad and this is the first apps I bought for my kids. It's just what I was hoping for. It is simple and engaging but not over stimulating or distracting. It's set up so that the kids learn to write letters properly and has the option to become more difficult as the child improves their handwriting skills. I really love it and my kids do too. It was totally worth the money. As someone who has never owned anything from Apple, I've had trouble learning how to navigate the apps and use the different settings. The support staff for this app replied to a question I emailed in less than an hour helping me solve my problem. I think it's a great app and that they provide great support service.

My autistic son loves it!

Great tool for teaching motor skills, and for keeping their interest with the interesting physics of the letter cubes. My only complaint is that the pictures that are shown when the word is finished are way too artsy for my son (is that a cat or a watermelon with eyes?). I wish that there was a choice of pictures to be shown. Maybe in the next version?

Everyone Loves it!

This app is beautifully crafted to be engaging and fun. It's great for practicing handwriting and reading skills. My special needs teenager who operates at about a 5 year old level chooses this educational ap for its fun quotient. My 3-year old step-granddaughter chooses it for its challenge. My 4 year old twin nephew and niece that I just visited in the UK consistently chose this ap above all others. It really does rank up there with the game aps for young children. They just love it. And it's a real pleasure to see children choose an educational ap amongst all the entertaining ones. They feel a real sense of achievement with this. I love how they can see their actual handwriting after finishing a word. And they always love how they can move the tiles to the spinning vortex trash!

To CH03 bellow - found an app that does all you want = Write On

I Love this app. It is great and lots of fun, but as a complement for more serious practice we are using Write On - it has all of the lines and arrows for guidance on the strokes, it does cursive and block, and best of all I can have my kids write their names in the app.

Great app!

Both of my kids love this app! As both a teacher and a parent, I would really like for it to show the primary handwriting lines (headline, midline, & baseline), so that it's easier for the kids to make the connection between writing on paper and tracing with their finger on the app. It would also be great to be able to make your own words to write (i.e. Child's name).

Impressed

My 4 year old son has autism so I have more than a couple reasons to love it, but for any child, this app has a great way of teaching. Not only does it show you how to trace the word, but it forces you to go in the right direction and stay with in the lines. Most apps lack this discipline, in turn, not showing our children much.

Prefer old style

I loved the old version of this app. I like most of the new upgraded features. YAY you can now navigate through the alphabet and repeat a letter. But, can you PLEASE add an option to practice the letters in the old style of the previous version? I realize some may like the Handwriting Without Tears method that involves retracing - kind of a mix between print and cursive. But I prefer the old style with the old school classic "ball and stick" formations.

This app is a primary cause of smudged screen syndrome on my iPad. I use the app teaching English to kids in Japan, including some with autism. They love it and want to "play" all the time. Top honors!

The is a wonderful app for learning to write letters! Easy to use and beautiful in it's simplicity. Loves the little design extras - letters shown in child's handwriting, letter blocks dropping, bouncing down to the corner. And love the added the ability to play the alphabet song. Some of the listed features - working on certain letters and ability to added own words or names - would be a wonderful upgrade in the future! Kudos on a job well done.

Overall great minor tweaks would make it excellent

As an occupational therapist working with children and teaching fine motor skills this app is fantastic. Almost right inline with handwriting without teaching method so kids get a fun tool and teacher can provide a verbal background as needed. Would be good to be able to immediately start with any letter or as many suggested pick out letters for say a name. Also would love the "K" to be changed so that the descending line starts at the vertical line. Thanks

Great starting point!

I think this app has such incredible potential. I have 5 children which include a 2 yr old and one of my 9 yr old twin boys that has Down syndrome. Both are working on writing. I love love love the way you have a defined starting point with the letter being broken down into stages that are not overwhelming! Also love audio supportive prompts and the approximation level for correctness. I hope that you can add some animation to the letter or picture when written correctly... Some motivation for the kids to want to work on a task that can be very difficult. Some kind of built in reward for getting it correctly... Not sure just a cute picture is gonna be incentive enough for my child with special needs. Also would like to be able to input words for him to work on like his first and last name, address... Maybe even have the ability to upload his photo with his name, or picture of his house to go with his address. Don't get me wrong- I love this app but see such potential as this changing lives for kids with special needs and getting them to write! I've been waiting for something like this to come along and you are so close to perfection! Can't wait for your next update! Thank you for this!

Autistic Daughter Loves This App

My daughter is three and autistic and it's still a little difficult for her to follow the numbers, but she's definitely learning. I also bought a stylus for this app so that she's able to feel what it's like to write the letters as if she were using a pen or pencil. The only thing I didn't like was that she had to tilt the iPad to get the letters "sucked" into the hole after they spell the word. I found out later, though, that she can navigate them with her fingers or I can turn on a suction feature within the settings. She also loves the alphabet song page and taps the screen in time with the music. It's a fantastic learning app for spelling and letter recognition and writing.

wonderful

This is a great app. My son has multiple disabilities and he has been struggling with being able to write letters. This app is simple for him to follow and create letters. And the sounds and suction hole are entertaining enough to keep him interested.
I would love to see two minor changes that I think would put the app over the top.
1. Being able to choose which letters you want to practice instead of having to go the whole way through A to Z. My son really struggles with certain letters and this would give him opportunity for extra practice.
2. being able to input word to write such as your childs name. In his school one of his major goals is to be able to write his own name. How cool would it be if he could practice it on this app and actually achieve that goal?

Great app, may i suggest...

Have a son with autism and fine motor issues and this app has captured his attention better than anything yet. Would love to be able to load words and pictures, AND
where circles are concerned and the last stroke returns to the first (like in O), I would rather see the final number on the line path appear UNDER the starting button (the crab is it?) than be superimposed on top of it. Going from 8 (superimposed) to 1, then 2 etc. is the only counterintuitive aspect to this app. Have the final button appear UNDER the starting point and then, when they start to write and cause the covered buttons to disappear, the final button can be revealed.

We love this app, BUT there are a couple changes we would like to see. We would like to be able to program our own words/name, and also choose which letter to start on. This is our favorite app!

My son loves this app and so do I. I like how you can adjust the setting for different levels of preciseness. I also like the child's voice but find that some of the letters are not as clear as when the adult voice setting is chosen.
Two suggestions for making this a stellar app would be to include the choice of phonetic pronounciation rather than the letter name and to require the child to initiate the voice reading of both the letter and the word. That way it would give the child a chance to try and sound out the word on his own.

Wow!

This is a beautiful and well-designed app. Great graphics, good options (like to change size and kid or adult voice). Love the use of the accelerometer to "dump" letters and numbers. :) I was playing with it myself way longer than I expected! (I know all my letters). Oh, and I love the squeaky sound when you go the wrong way when tracing the letter or number - a gentle prompt that made me crack up. An appropriate way to let little kids experience forming letter and number shapes before the the fine motor skills develop.
Thanks for the awesome app!

Great app for younger kids

This is a great app for kids just leaning the alphabet, plus those who are learning to write. Many kids have a difficulty time learning to write words the correct way which frustrates kindergarten teachers. With this app you have to write the words the correct way, but its done in a fun way. The kids drawings illustrate the app in an adorable way.

Utterly fantastic!

This app has revolutionized home education in our house. I have a child with visual problems who has undergone therapy to enlarge his visual fields. His doctor recommended he trace letters with his finger rather than using a pencil until he became confident enough to move to pencil and paper. Making him do this has been like pulling teeth...until now! With this wonderful app, he is tracing and learning and spelling words with delight. I also have his younger siblings doing the same and loving it. The only thing that the app could use is a way to add multiple users so I can track the progress of more than one child. Here's hoping we get that on a future update!

This app is WONDERFUL.

I bought this based on the reviews that some kiddos were writing within a week AND IT IS THE TRUTH. My son (whom we've had big issues with wanting to write) is tracing letters now every time he sees an alphabet or numbers. I know eventually he'll want to move on to more advanced stuff but for the introduction to writing, this app is perfect. He's even become interested in sheet music. Just get this app. It's worth more than they're charging based on the infinite amount of proud moments my husband and I have had.

Try free version - paid version for iPad so worth it

I installed free iPhone version first. Worked well on iPad and my 2 year old sorta got it the first time she played with it. Now a week later she is writing the letters by herself with little assistance from me. I bought full version and works perfect. Has tons more words and full alphabet. Such a great learning tool. Very worth the money.

My 2.5 year old loves this... uses it daily.

This app has really helped my son learn his letters and numbers. At first he was frustrated with it, but now that he's learned how to use it, he loves it. It took him about a week with our help for him to learn how to use the app on his own. I can see that he's really proud of himself when he writes all of the letters to make a word. There's lots of positive reinforcement. We're very happy with this app purchase.

Great for my special needs son!

Now that the app has the slider function to enlarge the size of the letters, it is PERFECT for my son! He has poor fine motor skills, so this is a great way for him to work on writing motions and letter shapes. My 3 year old girl loves it too - I highly recommend this app for kids who are learning to write, it can be a great tool for helping them really feel how to make the shapes! Thanks for the great app, and especially the update!!!

Great app

Great app, my 30m old niece loves spending time on this.
A suggestion to the developer - pl increase the font size in the iPad version. The screen is so big but the alphabets look small. The iphone version on iPad with 2x mode made it easy for my niece to write than the current iPad version with a smaller font size.
Secondly, if there is an option built in for parents to select alphabets for practice, it would be much helpful. It would become easy for my niece to practice one alphabet at a time say for 25 times, before moving to the next than going one after the other.

Excellent App!!

This is my 5 yr olds favorite tracing game !! He absoulutely loves that after he's done tracing the letters in the word he can make the letters fall in the star shaped hole .... I love that it will not let him trace the letters the wrong way as some other apps do .. I wish it had the D'Nealian letter style as my kids use this in Kindergarten... it would also be great if it said the letter name and it's sound as the he traces but overall this is definately a favorite !!!

My 2 1/2-year-old loves this

I was amazed to see my 2 1/2-year-old son figure out how to trace letters, laugh when he got it wrong because of the cute sounds the crab makes, and get excited when he got it right. He sounds back the letters and the encouragement from the narrator, too. This application is amazing!
Also, he played it on the plane from Mexico to the U.S., and a preschool teacher saw him playing with it and wants to recommend it to her students' parents for a learning tool. When she asked what the name of the application was and we told her "iWriteWords", our son yelled out, "yeah! IWriteWords!!" it was hilarious!

Son loves it!

My son is 3 and loves this app. It has great graphics and sound effects and I honestly believe that this app has helped him to learn to write letters. He is now able to write out some of the letters freestyle and I believe this app is the reason why. The quirky sounds really draw him in to what he is doing. Great product. He plays it constantly. Worth the money.

We love this app!

Our little guy loves to play with Mommy's iPod, and this is one of his favorites. He's getting very good at recognizing the lower-case letters, and I'm amazed at how quickly his small-motor development has come along from doing the curved letters.
The crab that tells you where to start and finish the line (and its little squeaks when he goes out of the lines) is very encouraging, and gives him feedback without making him feel bad. And the "tip the tile into the star" game after each letter or number breaks it up really well for him.
What a great app!!! We love it!
My only compaint (and it's minor) is that there seem to be some missing notes in the ABC song...

Great for toddlers and preschoolers!

My two kids, ages 2 and 4, love this app. It is especially good for my four-year-old who could trace letters but always went in the wrong direction. They love the sounds that go with it, and they love having the letters they wrote left up on the screen. I highly recommend this app for beginning to learn to write letters.

Fabulous app!

My three year old loves this app! I wanted a writing app for my girl and checked out a bunch of others. I bought it within 5 minutes of trying the lite version and it has been one of my best purchases! The numbered dots along the lines are very helpful in helping her to write. Also the neat little feature of having the letters fall down has been great in keeping my girl entertained. She really looks forward to tilting the iphone to get the letters to fall in the drain.
I hope more words can be added. The app has only about 50 and my girl loves this so much she has worked thru them all already!

New Voice Over?? (Updated)

My two years old loved this app. He asked me to write for him and replayed the words over and over. After you change the voice over from the kid voice in the older version to this women, he seems to be put off by it. He would quickly press the home button to exit the app. It's now sitting there of no use. Could you bring back the old voice?
Update: The creator does listen to the voices of every user. This app now includes the option for child voice. My son couldn't be more happy. Appreciate the sincerity of intention to make it better. I have this app since there was only the uppercase letter. Latest update also adds in the number. I would add five more stars for business practice alone. My two years and three months old can now read close to hundred words playing around with it. Great work!

Beyond expectations. . . .

I only had to see the lite version for a few seconds before buying this amazing application. I have been hunting for an application ever since I got my iPod Touch that would not only be engaging for my 2 year old but would help him learn. This app. delivers all the goods. Not only does it teach your little one how to write letters in a fun and truly amazing way. It also tells your little one the letter they are writing and, as they practice they are building word recognition skills and counting skills at the same time. My personal favorite feature of this app. is the ability to replay the words your child has written and allow them to see how they wrote out each letter to the word they were building. Amazing app., I honestly expect my little one to accelerate his ability to read and write as we get time to practice our letters in this application. Thank you.

Great App

This is the first time I have taken the time to review an app. I just had to say that I love this game. My six year old has played it continually. Even my 4 yr old has enjoyed playing it. Anything that is educational and fun deserves 5 stars in my book! The pictures are adorable and it does a great job of making sure the child is tracing the letters properly. I love how it says the word and shows the picture and my daughter loves when it gobbles up the letters at the end.

Don't bring this educational App to your kids Pre School, you won't get it back. :)

This is by far the best letters/words educational App on the App Store, my 5 year old plays it all the time even thought he has dozens of other games to play with.
I can't tell you how many people i show educational Apps for kids like this and they say "i wish i had an iPod Touch and not the Leapster or the Nintendo DS".
This App is great and is VERY educational, worth $5 AT LEAST.
Buying it for $2 is a steal, i also love the support the developer has for this educational apps, there has been at least 2 updates so far.

Amazing!!!!

My four year old loves this game and spends hours playing it, it teaches her how to put letters together to form words and how to form the letters. Great for learning how letters are made or improving skills, she makes some letters backwards so this helps her to go the correct way. I love this app!!! It is fun for grownups also!! :-) the only change I would make is clearer voices saying the words, some of them are hard to understand. Overall worth paying for and is not only fun but increases knowledge!!

My 3yr old now writes letters in just a couple days!!!!

Great app. Helps greatly with the motor skills needed to go from scribbles to letters, plus she plays EVERY day. Try the lite version and see for yourself!! Then you'll replace it with the full version like we did. I would have to say that this app has yielded the greatest results of all my daughter's apps.
Get it now.

Crabtastic Writing app for kids!

Well executed app for tracing letters and learning simple spelling. Great graphics and interface. Although for young children, the tracing "allowance" could be a little more. Even I couldn't trace w/i the lines without getting the fail squeaker often and having to start over. Also little daughter had to show me how to advance to next word. I kept tapping, sliding, hitting the sunburst icon and "i" icon to figure out how to get to next word. Young daughter told me that I just have to tilt the phone to drop the letters into the sunburst icon. Fantastic app. Keep it coming. Luv that crab!

Please have app say the word after child is done writing the letters!

Revised - Thank you for adding the update with the words spoken as well as the letters but I wish you used the same voice used to speak the letters to say the words because that voice is much clearer. Would love to see the words for "one" through "ten" added. Also I love the idea for writing numbers that another reviewer had mentioned.
We love this app but think it needs one last thing. Please have the app say the word the child has just spelled out. For example, if the sun is written then have the app say each letter again "s", "u", "n" then the full word "sun". That would make this a five star app.

Thank you!!!

I love this application and it just keeps getting better! Thank you so much for listening to all the feedback. The updates are great. I think it would be better if the letters were sounded out again and then the word spoken more clearly after they've completed writing the word.

With new update it's great

When I first got this I liked it, but it didn't say what the letters were or the word. Most of the time it was ok because my daughter knows most of her letters, but things like spelling 'bag' and her thinking she spelled 'purse' because that's what the picture is drove me a little nuts. Now it says what the letters are as you complete them and the words. It would be great if the words were spoken in the same clear voice as the letters, but kids can understand other kids better than I can so maybe it's ok.

Can I have my iPhone back please?

My active 4 year old boy loves this app! He won't give me back my iPhone. :-)
He is learning to trace and recognize his letters at preschool, so he's at a great developmental stage for using this app. Sound would be helpful to help with the letter recognition skills.
My son is very much the 'spirited' sort, so kudos to you for developing an app that holds his attention!
He does get frustrated when his finger misses the 'bug' or starts over when his finger goes outside the threshold. A few times, I was afraid he'd throw my iPhone! But I'm sure with practice his coordination will improve. Maybe in the next edition the developers can introduce different skill levels with progressively narrow room for error.
Overall, this is an excellent app for the preschool set. I think my son would agree!
