Description

Rogue Touch is based on the classic dungeon crawler Rogue. This famous turn based adventure-RPG has been re-designed from the ground up for easy touch screen gaming, no crazy keyboard commands or dozens of hard to learn gestures here! Rogue Touch is so simple a child can play, but still offers deeply strategic gameplay and literally hundreds of hours of fun and replay value!
Your mission is simple: Explore the Dungeons of Doom while trying to retrieve the Amulet of Yendor... Descend into the depths, find and identify strange and powerful items... Learn how to use your pack full of equipment effectively against increasingly dangerous monsters. Few have made it out alive with the Amulet. Do you have what it takes?
If you liked games such as Torneko / トルネコ / Taloon or Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer (Chunsoft) you have to play Rogue Touch! Rogue is the great-grandfather of these games and spawned an entire genre of "roguelikes" over nearly 40 years.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Rogue Touch is really a dream-come-true for fans of the genre. It's an impressive adaptation of a true classic." - Blake Patterson, TouchArcade.com
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Rogue Touch features:
- Random dungeon layouts and items: no two games are ever the same!
- Graphical, animated actions, special monster attacks, traps, and more.
- Ambient background dungeon sounds, or play your own music while gaming.
- Auto-mapping feature with map overlay (including locations of doors, stairs, monsters and items)!
- Streamlined inventory-item-action system for simple touch gameplay. Read scrolls, Drink potions (or throw them at your enemies!) and much more with a clear, simple interface.
- Movement/Attacking is handled with classic touch control or a virtual D-Pad for single handed gaming on the go.
- Dedicated on-screen buttons for both "resting" to heal your character, and "searching" to find traps and secret doors.
- Auto save system records your progress upon exiting the game so you can resume exactly where you left off next time you play.
- All of the monsters and items as seen in the Rogue ports of the mid 1980s, plus *many* new items!
- Secret characters to discover and play as, with powerful special equipment and abilities!
- Online Leaderboards with many ranking categories and statistics! View your rank at: BestRogues.ChronoSoft.com

What's New in Version 2.0.64

This app has been updated by Apple to display the Apple Watch app icon.
Version 2.0.64:
* ZOMG an update, after 4 years!
* WOW its a big update!
* HEY there's a bunch of new and cool stuff in this update!
* 64-Bit Compatible, Position Independent Executable (iOS 8.0 is the new minimum requirement). Portions of the game engine have been re-written to support this as well as the other new features below... You don't even want to know the massive number of deprecations I had to fix dating back to the original support for iOS 2 (º_o)
* Retina Graphics - The dungeon never looked better thanks to a ton of new artwork by Jake Woodruff and a bit of tweaking by yours truly. Everything has been re-imagined in Hi-Res detail.
* Retina Text - Fixed again what has been broken for several iOS revisions, all text is now silky smooth.
* Play Your Own Music - Finally, seamless automatic detection means you can explore dungeons without interrupting your jam (or streaming, or podcast, or audiobook!). Rogue Touch also respects your mute switch.
* Gameplay Improvements - In addition to the classic "Search" for secret doors, you can simply walk into / push on walls where you believe the door is hidden. If you're correct it will be revealed automatically! Secret Doors and Traps may have small but noticeable visual differences now to help clue you in ;)
* Gameplay Improvements Part II - Interesting tweaks for extra damage and/or elemental immunities when weilding special weapons like ice, fire, electric, and blessed.
* Dungeon Improvements - Subtle tweaks to dungeon generator for room sizing, treasure placement, and more. Secret doors should nearly always lead somewhere interesting now, rather than a potential dead end.
* Pinch Zoom Improvements - Now you can enhance your view by zooming anywhere from 25% to 200% size to appreciate the detailed graphics close-up and personal.
* Settings Improvements - Finally, it's super easy access to RT settings, just touch the gear icon found in the upper left corner on the Title Screen.
* BUGFIXES - Lots of little annoying bugs fixed to provide a better dungeon exploring experience! Fixes for various crash conditions, stair placement bugs, and game-lockup at item use during the last turn before death are included.
If you enjoy playing this newly enhanced version of Rogue Touch, please write a review and let everyone know!

It's Rogue and it's the best

Great version of Rogue. I grew up playing the Mac version and had been playing it on various 512 Mac simulators in the internet... but they would inevitably crash. This app almost never crashes, and when it does, it just brings you either right back to where you were, or to the beginning of the level.
It's similar to the Mac version, except with all the added Feudal Japan era weapons, hero characters, and super weapons. Only thing I miss is the "far seeing" potion from the Mac game.
I probably play this game everyday. No adds, like ever, always works, loads quick, can play it silently or listening to music, I really can't say enough good things about it. It's the perfect "I need to kill 7 minutes" game, or you can spend the whole day playing it.

Really?

The controls barely work, the profile screen for the character comes up about every third tap. There’s no sound, music or animation for an attack, so you have to read microscopic text (on a phone) to even tell that it’s happening, and half the time you sort of walk through the opponent without even knowing that was a battle. I bailed very quickly on this one. I feel like somebody just reached in my pocket and took $2.99.

iPad users beware

I love rogue likes and just purchase this game. Only to find that it is not optimized for iPads. The resolution is set up for phones and looks terrible, and plays terrible in my opinion on an iPad

Profoundly Compelling!

I loved Rogue when it was an ASCII game on a single-color monitor. This update preserves the very best of original Rogue with appropriately cool and simple graphics, more sophistication to items, monsters, environment, and strategy. Best of both worlds! Thank you for creating Rogue Touch! This is exactly the game I wanted for my phone!

Retro and wonderful

I spent far too much time playing Rogue in college and graduate school, and was thrilled to find this iPhone version. Although this version replaces the glowing green ASCII-character “art” with modern graphics, it staunchly maintains the character of the original game. End-of-the-Boom Boomers like me should welcome this blast from the past, as will presumably younger fans of _Ready Player One_. Well worth the $3, and I hope the developer is encouraged to continue his work.

I’ve been zapped with the Wand of Enchantment

I’ve recently discovered/re-discovered this game. I originally played hack on Unix platforms about 30 years ago, and this is very similar. A couple of years ago I found poor adaptations for iOS , but I find this adaptation to be excellent. I particularly like it when I get a good game going and am “lost” in it for hours. Well done!
A couple of comments for the developers:
This version is very “dark”. I realize this makes it harder, and there are things like light wands, but it detracts from the enjoyment.
I have not encountered shops yet: are they in this version? Shops were a lot of fun. There was usually a shop in the first few levels.
“Searching” is clunky, or maybe I just haven’t figured it out. Similar to darkness, it detracts. Dead end passages detract, too - what’s the point?
The occasional Scroll of Identify that identifies all items of a certain type, or x number of items, would be nice.
There should be a way to control where you teleport to? Maybe there is, and I haven’t discovered it yet.
There should be a way to go up stairs when you fall through a pit. Otherwise you don’t have the food, hit points, items, etc. you need to survive at a lower level.
Overall, really well done, and thanks!

Still a Classic

I have played this game, in one form or another, for years and will continue to play as long as the developer maintains it. I am so grateful to him for the most recent update. I had put it down for a while, because it had become crashy. Now it’s like returning to an old friend. Cheers Kevin!

Love it but still has the lost stairs bug

Love it and have been playing it for several years. I like the upgrade, but just hit the most annoying bug from the old version - a level without stairs. No choice but to restart.

Like meeting an old friend

I first played this game in the early eighties. It’s plays better with all of the TLC this version has. The Amulet of Yendor is still on level 26, just like the old days. This is a steal foe $2.99. I do very few reviews, just five stars and one stars. Enjoy the game!

Love it!

I picked this up a week ago, and love it! Not only have I not won, but I haven’t even come close. But my defeats have been glorious.
If I could add one feature, it would be the ability to go back up a floor. I usually die because I clear a level and am forced lower and lower before I’ve had time to really armor myself up. Being able to ascend dungeon levels would let me spend some more time getting stronger before heading into more danger.

Nearly Perfect

This is the only real roguelike on the app store. That said, the new update has crazily cranked up the number of aquators you encounter. After as you reach floor 8, it's aquators for days. Multiple aquators on every floor. The end result is that, unless you're lucky enough to find an elfin armor or a protect armor scroll, the only armor worth holding on to is leather, because anything else is guaranteed to be almost instantly destroyed.

Really Addictive

This app is absolutey the only one I use everyday. I used to play the Epyx Rouge on my old Tandy PC and missed it for several years, till my old friend showed me this on his I-pod, so it ws the first app I bought when I got one. The first time I played and read that I hear the sound of many shuffling feet in the distance I knew they had this version right.
Update 2017- Thanks so much for the update, I was thinking I would not be able to update my phone this fall because I would lose this game that I play very often still. I was so delighted and surprised by the gorgeous update. Thanks again

Food

My biggest gripe is that you have faithfully reproduced the most annoying feature of the original game. Many games just don't have enough food and there is no way of finding any in an emergency. It's really irritating to have a great game going and then starve to death.
Would you consider enabling file sharing for this game?

Classic old-school RPG'ing at it best.

I'm one of those old-timers who actually played the original game and its descendents like Ragarnok during the 1980s. This version really brought back memories of those dungeon crawls. This is a very challenging game not for the easily frustrated ;-) but I always put aside one of the other "eye candy" games to go another round with this fantastic adaptation of a classic. The input from the developer is simply the icing on the cake, as they are constantly looking to improve the product and ask for input on the forums.
EDIT: Eight years later this game has never left my devices. Thought it would die in the upcoming 64 bit move but so happy to see that it received an update! Can't wait to see the new stuff added. Sometimes the oldies are still the best :)

Great Game

A really excellent implementation of the classic game Rogue that launched the Rougelike genre. It's basically the original game with a few modern conveniences added, and works great as a mobile game. Edit 09/217: ZOMG THANK YOU FOR THE UPDATE SO MUCH WOW!!! And here I thought you forgot about us. New update is AMAZING. Sooooo much easier on the eyes, it's like playing a whole new game!! Already noticed loot is better especially at deeper levels. Thank you!!!
Yay fixed for iOS6!!! Still the best rogue-like on the App Store! Thanks dev you rock!!
I've tried all of the roguelike games and this one is the only one I keep coming back to. It is 100% true to the original, and if I could give it 10 stars I would. If you liked the nostalgic era rogue, you will love this portable version that will frustrate you and entertain you at the same time for hours and hours on end. I managed to beat it once in the hundreds of times I've played it and I keep chasing that high of beating it again. Best rogue clone in the app store hands down!!

Hello everyone,
You hold in your hand one of the oldest games in the App Store, based on one of the oldest computer games in existence.
Many hobgoblins died to bring you this update. It was quite a battle, but Rodney the Rogue never backs down from a challenge!

Love it

Just like the original, only better! And just as addictive. Just an update. This is STILL the one and only game that I keep playing and playing and playing. Perhaps because it is so quick and simple, when I am waiting at the doctor’s or for a bus, or train, or anything. I don’t have to remember what I was doing last time I played and it automatically saves. I have to get a new phone (mine is a 3GS still) but this will definitely move to the new one!!)

Casual rogue!

A nice and tidy roguelike dungeon crawler. As a fan of rogue, nethack and angband - this is a perfect appification of the originals.
The controls are simple (if a little poorly explained) and the normally lengthy list of functions has been simplified as well - which makes for an easy to pickup and hard to put down app.
Difficulty is good - expect to play 30 minutes to get to level 10+.

Just as fun as the original was 25+ years ago!

With more enjoyable graphics than the original, the gameplay itself feels identical. I wish there were a way to save and make copies of games, in order to cheat death, or maybe have some sort of "hardcore"/"easy" system, where you could respawn on lev 1 with no equipment after dying, or something. I know that would differ from the original, but I think having different modes like that would add to the playability of the game for a lot of people. Anyway, *love* the job they've done with this app, and happy that they're still supporting and updating it, years after I got it. Easily 5 of 5 stars. :)
shrurrg
Version 1.70
2012-10-29

So much potential, if only...

...the game weren't so reliant on luck to win. The amount of skill required is so minimal that it gets frustrating and repetitive. You can get a powerful magic item, get good armor, do everything like you're supposed to, and then not find food forever and starve to death. Or, you can do everything like you're supposed to and then fall in a trap that leads you to a room of dragons, griffins and death.
The point is, what you do has little effect on the success or failure of the game compared to the amount of luck you have. If this were uncommon, that would be one thing, but it happens over and over and over. Any game that has no way of winning without a bunch of luck is nothing more than the skill level of a slot machine. It's fun for a little while, and then it gets old and frustrating.
Give the player some way of altering the outcome regardless of the magic items they get or how lucky they are with food or potions or the like (a shop or trader?), and the game would be a lot more fun. As it is now, it is fun for a little bit and then it's about as much fun as a slot machine.
Sorry, Commander Data, I gave it 5 stars when I first got it, and then I played it for a little while and felt like it got really, really old really, really fast.

Expectations...

This is more of a response to some negative posts...several reviewers have stated a desire for a more in depth Rogue. They have even gone so far as to say that this is a dumbed down version. Poppycock! Balderdash! Malarky! If anything, it is a more streamlined and updated, user friendly port of the original. THE ORIGINAL. The Rogue that had little more than symbols on a screen and a killer intro screen (for the time) that I still don't know what creature it is. This app is true to it's roots. Take it from someone who still keeps a DOS system working so he can play his 5 1/4 inch floppy version of Rogue from 1984 (go tandy1000!!) because I STILL haven't beaten it on the original...(grumblegrumble) Point of my ramblings...know what you're looking for before you gripe. Understand your expectations. This is a wonderful app and hours upon hours of fun.

Upgraded Rogue from the Past

I used to play the original letter graphics Rogue back in the late 90's and really enjoyed it. This version is an upgrade to that great original with actual graphics, updated content, and additional characters unlocked by the name you choose. The additional characters keep the game interesting and the replay value really high. Out of all the adventure type games on my phone I play this one the most, but I am a gamer that has seen the entire evolution of the computer gaming industry from the early Atari consoles, so to someone who grew up after the bigger consoles came out you might not be as impressed. For old original Rogue players this is a MUST OWN! My thanks to the developer!

i'm dissapointed

well, i debated on purchasing this for more than a week and finally got it today. i was first introduced to roguelikes a few years ago, and really enjoy them. so when i saw this i thought it would be the best most complete version. actually, the truth is, it's watered down. it seems like they took the rogue formula and stripped it down to just the basics. while this is good for some new players, for those who have played before, its dissapointing. i thought that there would be at least an option to pick your character's class, but no, there are no options, there aren't even any options to pray, kick, etc.. i mean i understand if you want to appeal to a new audience, but you should let the customers know what options are and are not available. i for one want character selection, and maybe and option to change tilesets, but at least character creation/customization. for 2.99 you should give us more than a watered down port. if you're looking for a good roguelike with a bit more depth, i recommend 100 rogues or inethack (which is free). sadly i can't really recommend this one because i don't feel that it's that good, also it misinforms the customers. so i hope that, in the future this version with be more worth $3 and that if anyone is considering making the purchase, they read my review first, cuz nowhere does it say in the description of the app, just how feature light this game is.

Excellent game, with one exception

I have never played this before, but it is quite a lot of fun (I've already wasted several hours with it . . .) but I do find the food/fainting issue to be very annoying. It would one thing if there was usually enough food to be found at higher levels, but there does not seem to be. I have died many times in the high teen levels because I passed out while being attacked. Totally aggravating. Otherwise, lots of fun.
Update: ok, so I have played this a while longer and I can say that the game is often very frustrating. Magic items get lumped together so one might have 8 identity scrolls and nothing really else to identify. One adventure the character will obtain 4 potions of restore strength and in several other adventures none at all - yet in every adventure strength points are constantly lost. This makes the game very frustrating most of the time. It is actually possible to starve to death. Challenging is one thing, frustrating and annoying quite another. I'm afraid this game has passed into the latter category.
Update 2: please update for iOS 4; way too much lag time with the new OS.

Loving it!

Originally got into roguelikes by playing the iPhone version of Sword of Fargoal, then bought 100 Rogues. Both of the games are extremely fun(100 Rogues just needs that extra bit of polish, but they're working on it!)
I found out about Rogue Touch through the 100 Rogues topic in the Toucharcade forums and thought that I just had to try the remake to the game that pretty much started it all. I am extremely impressed at the work you've done to translate the game to work well on the iPhone/touch. (Tried the free port of rogue before I got to this)
You've pretty much sold me on any of your future games, Can't wait for Mineko!

Fantastic Version of the Classic

Remarkably it was 25 years ago when I played the Epyx version of Rogue, one of the first (if not the first) commercially available releases of this classic dungeon-crawl. I absolutely loved it when I was a kid, and begged my parents to consider buying me an Atari ST based soloely on the strength of the title (which they eventually did, because they were awesome like that and I was persistent like that).
In a huge field of roguelike games, Rogue Touch is most like that first Epyx version which got me so hooked on the genre, and yet it's also better in pretty much every conceivable way. The variety of encounters is strong, the levels challenging but doable, the graphics have nice unexpected animations here and there, and as always the randomly-generated maps make for countless hours of unique gameplay. The controls do take a bit of getting used to but work really well once you're there (double-tap is AWESOME). The fact that updates come out regularly is just icing on the cake.
Between this and Sword of Fargoal, the iPhone has become roguelike heaven. To the developer of this title I say strong work and keep it up! You've made a longtime fan really happy.

I guess I can't have my possessions identified...

I really like the streamlined nature of this game. The tileset is nice, the water drops in the background are a nice effect. However, my enjoyment of this game is hampered by the lack of standard roguelike conventions. First off, though the streamlining is great, I would really like access to the other commands (such as pray). Second, I want to be able to see my character page (or some alternate stat keeping screen). Thirdly, when I die in a roguelike, I feel I am entitled to having my possessions identified, seeing my conduct, and a log of everything I have killed. Without this third item, a big part of the experience is lost for me.
In short, great effort, but a little too streamlined.

Great "Retro" Stylings, Authentic 8-bit Gameplay & Graphics

We have long been fans of Rogue Touch on the App Store, viewing it as the first and, in many ways, "most authentic" true dungeon-crawler adventures! Having personally been involved in the RPG computer game world since 1982 and earlier, I can say that Rogue Touch really hits the mark when it comes to creating that "atmosphere" of the original 8-bit computer graphics and gameplay. Though, I hasten to point out that ChronoSoft's sprite-work is far more detailed and creative than the 8-bit computers could display back then.
Pick up this game to re-live that experience, or to "live" it for the first time if you have not done so before. It is far more true to the era than some of the anima-influenced dungeon crawlers that have tended to populate modern cyberspace these days.
Beyond that, the game's author, whom I've had the pleasure to have talked to now a couple if times by phone recently, is just the nicest guy! He believes -- like we do -- in support authentic "roguelikes" and continuing to support the genre by writing great games! He even went so far as to have started a great forum thread for OUR game -- very selflessly -- which we have enjoyed and appreciated very much!
A strong "buy" recommendation from me for sure!

Retro goodness with a fresh presentation and nice surprises

I'm a fan of the classic Rogue-like games. For those of you who are not familiar, Rogue is a dungeon crawler from the 80's where the dungeon, character, items and monsters are represented by capital letters and punctuation marks. Each new game presents you with a randomly generated dungeon that challenges you to retrieve the Amulet of Yendor. Rogue is known for its re-playability and strategic elements. It is generally considered the first "graphical" adventure game. Versions and variations are still available today for practically any device that can run it.
Rogue Touch replaces the text characters with very nice graphics and animations that really bring a fresh new feel to the game. It also improves on many of the game mechanics used to view where you are in the dungeon, manage and use items in the inventory, etc.
I've played it for only a few hours, and I'm still finding nice little surprises, cool animations and sounds.
I definitely recommend this game to the RPG fan who wants great challenge in an game you can play for short spurts of time, and on long train rides home.

Excellent, Fun and has a lot of Replay Value!!

I'm a newbie to Rogue Touch, never played the games back in the day so I wasn't sure what to expect from it, but when I started playing, I really enjoyed it! It took me a bit to understand how to move in the game lol but after that, it was really cool moving around the dungeons!
The graphics remind me so much of the old school games and look very colorful. The controls are simple, clean interface and great gameplay! I was surprised at how much I enjoy Rogue Touch to be honest.
Love the stuff I am finding in the game like scrolls, potions, killing nasty creatures lol and equiping my character Neo ;) This game is for anyone who wants great Replay ability, solid fun and challenging gameplay! I know I will be playing this for ages! BUY IT!

Like old times

Many hours spent playing Rogue. It had faded away from memory until I just happened to do a search for it and found it available for the iPhone. This version (1.5) has the same feel to it as I remember from way back when. Wasn't sure how much I'd miss having a keyboard, but the controls are well done and easy to use. The graphics used to display the items/monsters are a nice touch. Wish they could bring this out for the desktop, also. Overall, I'm very glad to have rediscovered this. Definitely a keeper.

My favorite game on iTunes!

I have a decent sized collection of games on my iTunes, Flight Control, Car Jack Streets, Doodle Jump, Uniwar, etc. And while all these games are good, I find myself coming back to Rogue the most. I'll admit it was hard to get into, after the first day I wasn't sure I was happy with it. But after a few runs, and looking online for some tips, I was hooked. Another plus is the enthusiasm the developer brings to the title. It's obvious how much he loves the game, and he does his best to ensure there are bug fixs, and new features added to keep everything fresh.
Couldn't recommend this title more!!

Best Money You Can Spend!

I had never heard of Rogue-like games before this game. But with the developers enthusiasm and interaction with the community, and the seemingly devout fanbase, I gave this game a shot. It takes a while to fully understand how everything works, but spend a couple hours with this game and there's no turning back. Once you get a grip on things and understand the game more, it hooks you like no other. This game is like having a complicated board game, or fantasy dice-based game, where you don't have to do any work to play. Just tap the screen a little bit and the game does everything for you. It's random every time which equals unlimited replayability. My iPod Touch is now my "Rogue Touch Player", which I also occasionally use to listen to music and surf the web. It's one of the only games I play everyday, at any moment in the day. Thank you for making this game, which has already given me so much enjoyment for my measly $3. And for anybody that doesn't "get it", or doesn't bother to take the time to do a little research to "get it", you owe it to yourself to really try this game. You could be missing out on the most enjoyment you can get on your iDevice.

Rouge Touch is the best RPG on my ITouch

Great game. I had the "other" Rouge game available because it was free. Tried it and deleted it (very frustrating). Then I noticed the update for Rogue Touch on the TouchArcade site and thought it was for the other Rouge I had deleted. Not so. Rouge Touch is a completely different version of the old game many gamers loved years ago. Rouge Touch is waaaaay beyond what I thought it would be. I grabbed it while on sale, but would have gladly paid full price for this one. The publisher seems to have really taken into account all user complaints, bugs, fixes, whatever.
If you enjoy RPGs you owe it to yourself to pick this one up. Whatever the price, it's a bargain. Different map every play, lots of secrets to find, cool sound effects, leaderboard, etc.
Being a longtime RPG fan, this really is the best RPG on my ITouch.

Even better every update!

Sweet merger of old-time gaming with a new look and interface! The original used to be played with a full keyboard and text characters, you were the @ symbol in a sea of punctuation and little letters, the monsters. Wasn't sure if I would like the revamped control scheme but it is pretty easy to use, and does not get in the way. The new D-pad works very well too.
Edit: Devs have posted several updates since my initial review, addressing concerns of myself and many others! Upgraded you to 5 stars for listening to everyone~ Keep up the good work!
Request > please port Nethack or Angband next!!!

The perfect game

Updating my review for the new version (1.5):
Wow. This update catapulted an already amazing game into the stratosphere. It's absoluely wonderful! If you like roguelikes, this is IT. And now, the amulet awaits me. :)
I've been playing roguelike games for 20 years and this implementation of Rogue has me hooked like nothing ever before. It is fantastic. The dev is incredibly helpful and responsive to customer input. I think I shall be wandering these dangerous corridors for a very long time. There's a very nice little community shaping up in the forum, and there's a leader board for best and worst performances by a character. I'm Lydyra--come see if you can beat my record for a fast death (darn wand of polymorph). :)

A kinder gentler Rogue

I've been playing Rogue since the original implementation on a DEC-10... this one is just enough easier (maybe a little less chance of nasty potions, or a little higher chance of good loot, or a bit more hitpoints) than most to make it more fun. I usually expect 5+ games where I die before level 10 for each I make it past level 10; on this implementation I am 4 for 5. However in typical Rogue fashion, just about the time you think you rock, you get crushed... but thats the game :) I do wish it had an automatic "double tap to follow tunnels" and that you could tilt it to see a big version of the mini-map (blatant rip off of another Ipod touch version I USED to play :))

Very nice engine and interface

I scored this application as how successfully the developer was able to port and present the original game, Rogue. It's a very solid port, and the controls are easy to use. The scroll usage animation is really cool.
That said, the score is really only applicable if you're someone who is looking for an iPhone version of Rogue. If you're not familiar with Rogue or other Roguelikes, this may not be your cup of tea since they tend to be somewhat unforgiving to casual gamers. But if you're in the mood for some Roguelike action, this is the game to get.
As others have mentioned, it would be great if the game allowed you to listen to your own iPod music while playing. This is the number one determinant of which games I actually spend time playing, as I often listen to podcasts and just casually play whatever game let's me do so without interrupting the podcast. It would be kind of nice if players were able to select their character sprite, as is available in the other iPhone Rogue version.
As a side note, Rogue happens to be one of my least favorite of the Roguelikes, but this is a really nice engine and interface. Hopefully, the developers will be able to build on what they've already accomplished and start working on a more in-depth Roguelike.
