Description

Vibration is a true vibration spectrum analyzer using the built in accelerometers and gyroscope inside the iPod Touch and the iPhone and starting with version 3.x it can sample the built in microphone and the Digiducer professional quality external USB accelerometer. It acquires and displays time series data, optionally removes DC bias, applies a Hamming window and performs an FFT on each channel to produce frequency spectra. The 3-channel accelerometer has a sensitivity of approximately 0.02g and a range of ±2g making the iPhone and iPod Touch sensitive enough to analyze the vibration of most moving machinery.
In many applications Vibration can be an excellent portable alternative to a commercial spectrum analyzer. In predictive maintenance applications Vibration can help identify bearing defects, shaft misalignment, imbalance, and structural resonant frequencies. Vibration is also useful for monitoring the acceleration of part and material handling equipment.
The software is flexible and easy to use. It was written to emulate the familiar oscilloscope based spectrum analyzer. Sample rate and sample delay are easily adjustable and the user can select the length of the data acquisition and the vertical scale used for the display. Once the settings are configured simply press the sample button on the device or on your Apple Watch. When a test is complete the resulting data can be emailed to your desktop computer for documentation purposes.
Features:
• Sample the built in accelerometer or gyroscope, the internal Microphone or the professional Digiducer USB accelerometer. Additional Digiducer accelerometer features can be enabled via in-app purchase.
• Adjustable sample rate from 10Hz to 100Hz for the internal sensors and 1 kHz to 16 kHz for the internal microphone and the Digiducer accelerometer (with in-app purchase)
• Trigger sampling and review settings using the Apple Watch companion app.
• Auto repeat and auto save allow data to be taken over extremely long periods of time.
• Selectable data length from 256 to 4096 samples
• Variable start delay from 0 to 20 seconds
• Adjustable vertical scale for time series data
• DC Remove option to get rid of the gravity vector
• Switchable Hamming window for frequency analysis
• Frequency data plotted as Linear-Linear, Log-Log, Log-Linear and Linear-Log
• Computes rms and peak levels for each channel and for all three channels combined
• Document your results by taking screen snapshots and syncing them to your computer or sending a CSV formatted email with the time and frequency data to your computer or saving data locally and downloading the data with iTunes
• Turn on and off individual frequency plots
• Calibrate the internal accelerometers and examine and edit the calibration data
• Optional sounds to mark the start and stop of data acquisition
• Data inspectors and zoom
• Triggering off one or more accelerometer channels or microphone input.
• Frequency data averaging and peak hold.
Further development and additional features are planned. Please use the email links in the program to request new features and report any problems.

What's New in Version 3.55

• It is now possible to select an external microphone as a data source.

Vibration analysis

Was intending to use this app to balance motors on a quadcopter. Can't get it to register anything after multiple tries. Talked with another user who d/l'd this also for the same application. Also same result as me. As far as I am concerned, I got nothing for my money.

Wont run with ios p ipad2

Was working before upgrading to ios 9
Now the app complains about some "...reciept[sic] ..." Problem and forces the app to close.
How to get it working again, or is this a rip off!

Very Useful

I've had this app for sometime now and find it to be useful for measuring frequencies of all sorts of things. In the past it was vibrations, and now with the microphone added as a source, sound. Use it on both the iPad and iPhone.

Unable to load saved data

I have taken many measurements and saved them properly. When I go to load my data, there is nothing there. I reported this problem yesterday and have had no reply from them. Feel like I was ripped off of $5 that I paid. This has also wasted a lot of my time at work, which has cost me $400 in my time.

Nicely done

Very solid work around this implementation that provides useful data capture from the iPhone accelerometers in all three axes, as well as the gyroscopic sensors (though to a slightly lesser extent). Data is portable, GUI is flexible, acquisition parameters adjustable. Kudos to dev for continued refinement. Very fairly priced.

This App turns your iPhone into a $2,500+ piece of scientific equipment

This is a wonderful scientific app that specifically shows how powerful an instrument that most people never realize they carry in their pockets.
I've used this app to conduct a limited vibration analysis of an apartment that complained about vibrations caused by newly installed chiller pumps in the building.
I'm amazed at how sensitive the internal accelerometer is on the iPhone 5. I was able to detect vibrations creating a surface delta of 0.02 mm/s @ 5KHz.
Kudos to the developer.

A BSR/NVH engineer's must-have

Anyone needing to characterize noise, here is the perfect app to get. There are many ways to use this cool "tool". I used it as a stopwatch by setting it up to trigger from z-axis motion, since my challenge was to time movement occuring in less than a second. This app lets one record the noise AND measure the vibration, or other movements, to give variable data to an otherwise subjective claim about what is heard. It can easily capture and email all the information: audible, graphical and g-force data.Other uses include getting data for performance of vehicle cornering, machine operation, and playng music. I let many of our automotive engineers know about this.

Excellent app

Does a very good job of capturing short term vibrations so they can be compared for diagnostic purposes.
I intend on using it for server preventative maintenance to compare vibration levels over time to see if we can pick up issues with drives and fans before the fail completely.
I guess it could also be used on engines to check for changes to rotating parts and bearings that could indicate problems.
It'll take a while to see if it's suitable for those applications, but it'll be fun checking it out.
One nice feature is sending the sample out by email, it does a date and time stamp in the subject line and you can add your own notes. It sends the data in a csv file that can be used for comparison with previous samples. A clean way to get data quickly off the phone and where you can use it.

Time base warning

Excellent app! However the sample rate must be less than 20 or time base warning message appears (iPhone4). Tried recommended calibration but no improvement.

This app saved the day

For months we've been having issues with hard drives failing within servers due to vibration.
With this app, and placing the iPhone on top of the hard disk, we were able to test different fan configurations until we brought vibration down to 1/4 of what it was before.
We didn't have to buy a $1k vibration meter. This was enough. I would gladly pay more than the $5 this app costs!

Wow.

For the price this is amazing. I might not have been too surprised to find out that buying an instrument to do this job cost thousands of times that. Very nice and tidy.

Fixed my fan.

100°F and I knocked over my box fan, breaking off one of five plastic blades. With this app, and a little trimming of the remaining blades, I'm back in the comfort zone with a fan that may even vibrate less than when it was new!

Not bad

Ok guys, it's a great app. Wroth the money and great for simple stuff. The only thing I would complain about would be inability to save and this causes the inability to study the vibrations later.. I also like to see the resultant.. Sum of all 3 axes or perhaps be able to chart an equation next to the data... Perhaps. Someone get a hold of me so I can explain better... But. Great start.. My 2k device did not work cuz my laptops batt died.. I uploaded the vibrations and kicked some behindz with it..for a few bucks...
Kick in the pantz. Keep improving !!...

Excellent app

Does what it says and it does it extremely well with a polished look. I'll give it five stars when I can measure mm/s and edit which axis gets displayed on the time series tab.
But overall great app, when less expensive tool I need to carry when I travel! Looking forward to an update

Needs greater frequency range

Love this app but if you claim to be able to detect bearing faults then I need a frequency range higher than 50hz.

Awesome Vibrations App!!

This application is great. My work is in mechanical vibrations and I often think of things outside of work and how to measure them for fun! This is the perfect application with enough information to satisfy the scientist in me, yet simple and fast enough to be entertaining.....That being said...BUYER BEWARE: If you aren't vamiliar with the mathematics of vibrations, study up, or don't even waste your time. Get a clinometer App or something.

Perfect Engineers App

Shocked to find real engineering in the Iphone store? If you are a civil, mechnical engineer, asset manager, student buy this app. Can you imagine performing basic System Idenification on the Golden Gate? Condition Monitoring of your Cisco Media Hub? Think of the future where many iPhones monitor the Golden Gate and are triggered by Quake Warn. The era of low cost asset integrity monitoring has started with this App.

Amazing app

I am very happy with this app for the price. I am a dynamics analyst and do this kind of measurement with 100 or more accelerometers all the time. The ability to use the iPhone as a triax for quick measurements blows my mind. And continuous mode is not needed in my opinion since you can capture the frequency content of a vibrating system in ten or twenty seconds. Time plots are not the power of this app. It is the frequency plots that have the real information.

90% perfect

I work in an industry where I have occasion to use some pretty high tech vibration analysis on prototype systems, so I was interested in what this could do. So far, I'm fairly impressed with the results. I like that you can get csv output, I like that there is some degree of sensitivity control, and I like the calibration. My complaints, such as they are, are divided into technical capabilities and interface. For the interface, I guess I don't like the way the settings screens are arranged. You get one set of controls from the time display, one from the frequency display, and another from the iPhone's settings app. You can't even toggle between the first two settings screens! And the buttons are not quite professional looking. The bottom three buttons look clunky, and the acquisition time and vertical scale button groups are poorly animated during the page flip animation. I also think there's a cleaner, more intuitive way to do the toggling between acceleration, velocity, and displacement. Seriously, I had no idea what was going on with those until I read the help pages.
Technically, I want higher frequency in the data. I set to 100hz, and I can only see about 25hz in the upper end of the frequency plots.
Also, the app hangs once in a while and has to be reset.
Thanks for doing everything else right.

The best priced analyzer in the industry!

I have used this program to impress the vibration analysts that I work with. Hopefully, in time they can give the big boys like GE, Emerson, SKF, and IO Tech a run for their (over priced) money.
The new enhancements on the horizon include data storage, cursor mode, and trigger level. Co-workers think that I am crazy by placing my I-Touch on a machine, or performing a bump test with an I-Pod. This does beat using my finger and guessing the amplitude and frequency. Try this program, you won’t be disappointed…

Great app for professionals

I teach engineering at SFSU. "Vibrations" is our app of choice for accelerometer experiments. It has an intuitive interface, collects accurate information (expecially with the latest calibration update), displays time and frequency technical data in csv format as well as graphics, and sends csv data conveniently to email. The only change I would like to see is to have the capability of sending the graphics via email through the "Vibrations" app rather than having to save them in the Photos folder first.
This app is highly recommended for those who want to take advantage of the 3-axis accelerometers data in iPhone/iPod Touch.

Excellent app!!! Does exactly as advertised.

This app is a very creative use of the iphones sensors and with a little imagination it has many potential uses. It has worked beautifully for me, just as described without any issues. The interface is clean and easy to use. I highly recommend it!
