Description

ENTRY LEVEL [FOOT • INCH • FRACTION] CALCULATOR
MACWORLD **** "inchCALC's ease of use coupled with its advanced features make this an uncommonly good addition to a crowded genre." 3/9/09
inchCALC is an entry level construction calculator for people who work with the FEET• INCH• FRACTION dimensions used common rulers and tape measures.
These dimensions are shear drudgery when you have to manually add or subtract them --- let alone multiply or divide.
If you are a builder, contractor, sub-contractor, architect, engineer, artist, designer, student, homemaker or DIYer, you know the importance of working with accurate dimensions. inchCALC™ tranforms your iPhone / iPod Touch into an easy to use FT• IN• FRACTION construction calculator that inputs and outputs dimensions exactly as they appear on a tape measure.
With inchCALC you can inexpensively perform the functions of expensive dedicated calculators on your iPhone / iPod Touch.
Click on our website below to see feature details.
If you like what you see, the full version, inchCALC+, has many more features, including conversion to METRIC & built-in TRIANGLE SOLVING.

DO NOT BUY THIS APP!!

The developer has not supported this app in years. They have released a new app and charge $4.99 for it instead of creating updates the existing one.
If you buy this app you will get a message stating that it will slow your phone. I am not happy about buying an app which the developer does not support. I would expect them to do this on their next app as well. Buyer beware.

Needs updating!

After the latest iPhone software update there was a message from Apple telling me that this App could cause my phone to work slower because the App is not updated for the new software. I see there is a new INCHcalc +. Is that compatible and if so, not too happy that I will need to spend $4.99 to replace an App I've already paid for.

Great tool for dealing with the obsolete system of feet and inches, but shouldn't there be a key for PI?

Bait and Switch (IMHO)

Originally bought for iPhone. It is said by developer to be compatible with iPad. Opening app on the iPad results in a screen inviting me to spend another 5.00 for an iPad version. I am happy to use this app in iPhone emulation mode. However the app simply won't open that way.

Garbage

What a piece of garbage. Paid $1.99 for the app, when I tried to open the app it sent me back to the App Store and to the $5.00 version of the app. I could not get the app to open. Deleting and reinstalling the app was no help.

A clean, simple, carpentry tool

A great tool for carpenters, builders, or anyone who needs to perform simple calculations with inches and feet. This is not a conversion tool as most in the app store are. There's a silly ad for an additional paid upgrade which makes the calculator useless in landscape mode. Other than that, it's straight-forward, and performs as you'd hope.

App forces you to buy +plus version in landscape mode, you need to switch to portrait mode every time if you want to use this software. I am not upgrading this, and uninstalling the free version. inchCALC

I was hoping the program would include the ability to change a fraction into decimal and vica versa. Sometimes I want to use the next size drill and it might be measured in fractions or thousandths of an inch. The logic of the program could be improved along with additional features.

Thanks for the FREE UPGRADES!

Still the best Architect/Builder/Designer calculator for the iPhone/Touch. Skip the $.99 version & get the fully featured $4.99 inchCALC+ --- it basically replaces my $60 Construction Master & it's on my iPhone wherever I am & whenever I need it.

Update = fail!

Update puts stupid ad over half the keys for too long. So frustrating. Also, does not store numbers in memory properly... stores last input, not last number shown.
Ex: do 3 x 4. Answer equals 12. If you hit m+ once you have your answer, it stores 4, not 12. Useless.

Fast Fractions! Super Handy.

This app deserves five stars, as so many recent reviewers agree. All issues of the past are fixed, but old ratings are unfairly pulling it down.
Among the most useful apps on my iPod. Makes short work of fractions.
Would like to see the interface tweaked for fractions. Upon pressing green "/" key, digit keys 1-9 should disappear, to be replaced with six denominator keys:

Terrific calculator!

To the devs: Your app is back on my iPhone! Thanks for listening to your previous customers and removing the really annoying ad. I've updated my rating accordingly and highly recommend this as a great calculaltor with support for feet and fractional inches.
For historic purposes, my old review said: "This used to be a $1.99 paid-for app, now it's free crippleware." I would use this app when I needed to do some quick feet/inches calculations, but the latest update with a 9-second (!) ad over the bottom half of the keypad has made its use too frustrating to keep on my phone. The developers should be ashamed for crippling what was once a useful paid-for application. If you no longer want to give away a useful product for free, then charge money for NEW purchasers, but don't screw with your existing client base by removing features and making the app less than useful."

From 5 stars to 1...

You know I greatly appreciated the effort and thought that went into making this app. Then when you offered it for free for Thanksgiving it really showed me the quality of your work and yourself. THEN all of a sudden like the app was under new management or something an ad makes it's way into the works. Not just simple ad support, but an intrusive and unprofessional implemented version.
If I actually needed this app which I don't (It's a nice to have) I will go out and spend $35 on a real one. Why didn't you just put it back to $.99 or something, why ruin all your work with a pathetic ad. I don't get it. I will not be supporting your ads.
bigkahunafromtheisland
2009-05-23

Horrible buissness practices

I paid 1.99 for this app months ago and now have to sit through the add. It's utterly useless when I need to wait to use a calculator. Especially when I payed for it. I'm very disapponted
Polywog7
2009-05-19

The pop up is a PITA...

... but at about 4 seconds now, I no longer want to throw the phone across the room. I'd like to see the ad moved behind the 'i' button, but so it goes. The lag cost a star in an otherwise solid piece of work.
This thing works, and, once the ad goes away, it works well. Easy to use, and makes short work of those pesky fractions. Some day I may need the 'pay version', but for now, this fills the bill.

Cheap

The 9 second ad on the free version is garbage. You cant use the calculator until it goes away. That's pretty slimy and a bad way to do business to add stuff like that. Leave it free, forget the ads, and don't update that version, just update the 5 dollar version which is way too much to begin with. It's obvious you aren't selling this program, otherwise you wouldn't be wasting your time with the advertising on the free version.

I Paid for the "Free" Version

I bought this app last October for $1.99. It was well worth it. Now it has been "updated" to free and it stinks. Don't even waste your time. A calculator should be quick to use. I don't want to spend 9 seconds waiting for a stinking calculator.
erizner
2009-05-07

You have got to be kidding with this update!

Look if you wanted to put an ad on the app why not do what everyone else does and put it in the header. But no you have to put it over the app and we have to wait for it to disappear. This is an unacceptable practice deserving of a deletion from my iPhone. All this is accomplishing is lost clientele for any future app by you. What will you pull on your consumers in the future.

Works great.

I use it quite a lot in the field doing underground layout. I have a $35.00 construction calculator but this is just so handy since I have the iphone with me all the time. I must admit the ad splash screen was a disappointment, but for free I can't complain.

Great App.

Well deserving of five Stars. I own the plus version after downloading the free version and both are a great asset. The poopup does not bother me at all because this is still better then some applications that are free but severly limit functionality to the point of useless. Keep up the good work

2009-05-02

Stupid people...

...Should keep their opinions to themselves. The ad only covers the keys for a few moments before it vanishes. Not a problem, and gone completely in the paid version.
This app works just as it should, assuming you have an IQ over 90. If you can't handle the program you'd best stay clear of the high speed cutting tools.

2009-04-30

great app that is free!

This is a very cool application that I can't believe it's free. I'm not sure why anyone is complaining about an Ad in the application? Do you complain when there is ad on TV or the Radio when your watching Free content?
The app has a great set of features that I'm glad I downloaded it. I just checked out the paid version and I may have to get it because it seems have all the functions that I need when doing any type of measurements. If only we could be on the metric system it would be much easier. But we're not so until then this is my handy utility.

What happened to the conversion of fractions to decimals

Before this latest update, I could multiply using the ft/inches and then I could change the result from ft/in to a decimal by pressing the green ft. button I can no longer do that or am I missing something?
JONESDADT
2009-04-28

Much like the other reviewers of the latest version. . .

I downloaded the update only to find out there was a nag that blocked half the numbers and every time I tried to click one it took me to buy the + version. I was so mad that I deleted it immediately. I can understand the need for charging for your time in writing the app, but don't punish your customers that have already bought the app. It just ticks them off.

Horrible due to "update" Stay Away!

I've had this app for some time, and used it all during my kitchen remodel. I had even replaced the default Apple calf with this -- HOWEVER the recent v1.5 "update" is the WORST change a developer could make. The update puts an ad over part of the keys for 10 seconds, making you wait to use the app. The only easy to remove the ad for hassle free use of the "free" app is to buy the full app for $4.99. This is a sneaky update and frustrating to use. A great app that will now be removed from my phone....

Sneaky--don't install the update!

Worked great until a so-called update came along and caused a ten-second delay flogging the paid version each time the app starts up. I might have considered paying for it previously but there's no way I will now.In fact, I deleted it. Too bad, really, because it's a very useful little utility.

Invaluable to anyone who uses a tape measure

Dealing with those pesky fractions, want it as a decimal in feet or inches? adding odd feet and inch dimensions or something in inches only and feet only? InchCalc does it all. As a professional Site Engineer I have need this app since 1984:-)

Great app, really handy

Great app, works just like it says. I always loath working with inch fractions, but this app makes it a cinch. The interface is very familiar and intuitive, especially the fraction entry. But there are also some sophisticated details, ie: automatically formating the answer for sq ft or cubic ft. The website support is very comprehensive, and gives a good rundown of the features.
Totally solid app. I give it 5 stars, and fully recommend it to anyone whose work involves measurements (especially those of us who struggle with fractional calculations).
This one feels complete, can't wait to see what they add for the pro version!

Works great

I have been using this for about a month. It works great. I often have to find the center of some random measurment. This works great. Enter the measuremen inches and any fraction there of and divide. Nothing to it. Thanks for this app
Caveyeti
2009-01-24

Awesome

This works really nice once you figure it out. Here's a little pointer to get you going. You need to use the (feet) button and (inch) button properly to make it function. For example: if you want to add 3 1/8" plus 7 5/8", you would need to type (3)(inch)(1)(/)(8)(+)(7)(inch)(5)(/)(8)
I needed this app in a pinch and it really came through for me. Saved me a ton of time. Thanks.

Seems to work for me

I too was having issues with fractions dissapearing, but then I went to the help page, which was very helpful, and after reading a bit turned my tollerance from x/2 to x/32. This seems to have done the trick. I have not yet seen the "adding small units first" issue, but agree that I would need to trust that it is 100% rock solid before getting the paid version. I would also be more likely to get the paid version if the triangle solver had a graphical input vs. the function input. I am really happy that this "lite" version is not missing any basic functionality like division or something, thanks and keep it up.
UPDATE: I tried following other's examples and for me:
14.5+4=18.5
and
4+14.5=18.5
so I am not sure where the problem is or if it has been fixed. My settings are:
Denominator - x/32
Decimal - .000
Good luck

Incorrect results

Kind of an evil joke- a calculator that doesn't calculate. Sometimes off by up to 6"! Not just inaccurate but completely incorrect. I'd be happy to pay for the upgrade (it was a free app after all) but I now have no confidence that it would work either.

2009-01-06

Ugh..

REVIEW UPDATE:
Changing the fractional denomination helps with the dropped fraction. Still needs an update, but it's closer than I previously thought.
Well this app sounds and looks good. It is exactly what I have been wanting, except it doesn't work. A calculator that you can't count on or be sure of is useless even for simple equations. The issue about adding the largest number first seems to have been fixed. However, now my fractions are consistently deleted as soon as I pick a function. If this is a developer limitation fine.... But the web help and application page state otherwise. I'd gladly up my rating if it were fixed!!!????? I don't need the functionality of the plus version. Just want somethimg that actually works.

Decimal rounding bug

Apparently, inch calc sets an answer's decimal places from the number of decimals in the first number entered, and rounds the answer to that number of decimals. Therefore, 4+14.5=19; while 14.5+4=18.5. This should be easy for the programmer to correct.

AJ

I give this app 5 stars. And 5 stars for potential. Good start. I've been looking for something like this.
To the developer - check out the construction pro calculators for some features that hundreds of builders use on a daily basis. Examples- conversions- inches to feet - cubic ft to cubic yards- rise and runs......
Someone needs to make a construction calculator! Lots of Masons, carpenters, landcapers, framers use the construction pro daily. I would gladly pay to eliminate having to carry around a calculator and have it all on my iPhone.
PS the calculators are not cheap. Good luck, don't miss the boat on this one. If I had the know how I would do this myself.

To the reviewer XraySalami below me: if you go to their help page page, they say that when entering lengths, you must enter the LARGEST dimension first. This is probably why you're experiencing that problem. Hope this helps!

Doesn't work properly.

I'm an engineer, and when I saw this program I thought to myself "What a time saver!"
Well, after downloading it, I played with it for less than a minute before finding out it doesn't work. For example:
14.5" + 4" = 18.5"
BUT
4" + 14.5" = 19"???
Depending on the type of project I was working on at the time, this could have cost me my job, or worse... I didn't want to write a bad review because it might be a simple mistake by the developer, but I reported the problem before and it hasn't been fixed.

Great App but needs Diagonal button

Great App but one of the main things I see missing for a construction calculator is a diagonal button to quickly calculate the hypotnuse. ie: A2+B2=C2 as this is a must in construction for anything to be square/plumb etc. As a GC most of my crews use the construction calc just for that reason as it quickly gives them the ability to check a floor for square, get rafter length, stairs, etc.. please add this in an update soon...but thanks for the app just the same..

Oh man... THANKS!

I work in a museum and, short of going to metric, I need to constantly divide fractions, add inches and convert to feet. I've been doing it a while. But when you are in the middle of a major installation, switching between English and Spanish, yapping at your drywall crew, you get a little brain dead. I depend on my iPhone to keep it together. Having this app on it makes my life ALOT easier. Thanks for the early Christmas gift. I'm going to the App. store to upgrade to the full version.

What a time saver!

As an architect on the move, I welcome an app that allows me to leave one more device back at the office. I find myself constantly reaching into my bag to grab a foot-inch calculator to work out things in the field with the contractor isn't equally equipped. I sometimes bring work home, again, one last thing I have to remember to bring along. Works like a charm and does what it needs to in a very simple and straightforward fashion.
I would have given it 5 stars except for the fact that I discovered when I tried to use it in landscape mode, the screen shows a "plus" version, but it is not available (yet?) in the App Store. $5 more, and worth it for the added features and landscape mode. I would gladly pay the extra bucks. Can I upgrade for the difference? Also, I suggest fixing the links on the website to have it launch you back to the App Store.
